G-Minor 13: January Vanilla Gauntlet

I'm not sure if I should post this here or the strategy forum, but I’ve tried a quechua rush and am close to ad and am facing axes and archers(thank god there’s no longbows yet and that I started with a good map for the rush i.e. enemy close by) I killed Germany in like 5 turns with dumb luck attacking with the starting quechua and killed 2! archers:D then I went to France they are gone I have copper to:D but im stuck at this point with hopefully enough quechuas to upgrade to axes to kill Hatty or Kublai but don’t think I have the gold to upgrade enough im hoping I can the Gauntlet this time around but my question is what do I do now to go for domination. thanks for the help.

For Quechua rush, my primary goal is to cripple the AI. To accomplish this, I usually build my capital on the hill or next to whatever tile that yield a 3 hammers. I immediately roll out 3 more quechuas as fast as I could, then send them out in opposite directions. Hopefully, each quechua will declare war on whatever civ that he encounters. The first mission is to fortify near the AI capital to prevent the AI worker from working (like hooking up horse or copper) or their settler to come out building any more city. I usually don't see any axeman or charriot from at least 3 AIs.

thanks for the tip moonsinger but it seems the ai on my game likes to ignore the quechuas atleast for sending out settlers

BTW you know soming is wrong when you get a start like this and cant make enough quechuas:cry: i hope i got a good enough screen shot showing my capital sitting a plains stone tile and allmost sharing borders with the capital of FOUR OF THE FIVE CIVS!!!

well i just played a few more turns and lost my capital:cry: so i thought i would upload a screen shot of the starting possition of all the civs

Does pressed pangaea produce the smallest landmass? I just finished my first swing.... I definitely took it too slow since I finished with knights in 1310 AD! I'm finding it to be a pain getting the borders to pop on new cities (is there a better solution than obelisks?)

The Stonehenge wonder plus avoiding the Calendar tech, perhaps? Maybe not the best technique, but it's simple and effective.

Assuming your not playing a creative civ, the best way is with Caste System (after researching Code of Laws). Hire an artist specialist just long enough to expand your borders to the fat cross.

Edit: Seems like I'm following Superslug around. First in SF and now here.

Edit #2: BTW, with obelisks (from Stonehenge) and an artist specialist (from Caste System) it takes one turn with this game to pop your borders to the full fat cross.

If you don't have the Castle System, just build a lot of settlers, position them ahead of time, then fill the land up with cities in one single turn. Sure, you will be bankrupted by the next turn, but you would also win by domination.

Yeah, I noticed that you spam settlers in your domination wins Moonsinger :) I'm trying to do that too (but clearly not as much skill).

On a different note, is it a bad idea to continue researching after iron working, wheel, and agriculture/animal husbandry? I leave research on to hit code of laws and construction, but I'm starting to think it might be better to just build warriors and buy upgrades for them with money instead of researching...

I keep getting backstabbed when I get to around 50% land. It's happened 3 times in a row... (then I lose 3-4 cities, normally including capital or highest hammer city)

Gosha, I'll answer your questions on 24th ;). No fantastic random required, believe me.

1645 AD
I kept building Praetorians until the 17th century.
I added Monty to my game, and he didn't declare war on anyone the whole game, he was the second biggest civ all game, but didn't declare!

I believe, that the date of the best finish must be not worse 500BC, but this is very hard and demands a lot of a fantastic random.:wallbash:

I believe that 500BC is impossible!!! I have done four more games this weekend and couldn't finish any of them before AD. In fact, I couldn't even beat the previous two games that I had submitted week ago. For those of you that finish this game before AD or early AD, congratulations!:goodjob:

FYI: Civ4 is working great on Windows Vista. I'm currently running both Civ4 and Warlords on Windows Vista Ultimate. I love it! Too bad, I didn't buy any Microsoft stocks.

Is your processor single core, dual or quad?

It's an old AMD X2 4200+ dual core with 2 Gig of RAM. This same old system boots up to Vista at least 5 times faster than WinXP. All the old applications seem to run faster too, especially Photoshop CS2. I'm totally impressed. Below is screenshot of a Vista desktop may look like.

Holly Molly! We have totally different concepts of an old desktop! :)

I have reached a conclusion: I don't know how to play a domination.

Monark. Small, Pangea, high, rocky, escaso, no barbs, no cheating.

I chose the only other Creative leader, Cyrus. There were no horses to use its UU, so I sword rushed (I miss my Prats) ... too soon, as usual, with only 2 of them.

Construction in 930BC, first to Music in 160BC, the same year the first rival is OCC.

I built National Epic in the BC. I also built forges. If you plan for an early finish, they are a waste. My capital was able to pop 2 elephants a turn, and you can't pop more than one, so I ended up using the overflow for buildings, thuis getting only a unit every 2 turns!

I had a very strong production, so my attacks didn't lose momentum. By 200AD the second rival was OCC and I had 2 GPartist to use.

Then I lost my time till 800AD doing nothing. Why? I thought that only one more rival had to be taken and I saw my closest rive¡al get Feudalism. So I went after the farthest one. It was a big mistake, moving units is a waste of time (and RL time too), when I got there they had Longbows too and in addition I had to take my closest neighbour anyway to reach the limit... All in all, a disaster. I even had time to get to Guilds, something not to be done for an early finish. Construction and Drama is all you need.

Why should I take 4 out of 5 rival to get a 66%? There was a lot of ice in the poles, is it always like that in Pangea?????????

From 800AD on I kept on warring. No settler spam at the end.

Result: jesusin, 1040AD domination, 11 hours.

I don't think I will try again, 11 hours is too much to be a "Minor" game.

Agree.

As it demands a little time, I played many times too... and always worse.
Once time I have killed 2 AI before 2600BC.. - It was my best begining.
But then awful random has eaten my army.. :badcomp:
