Department of Stranger Affairs

I sense some lines have been drawn with us and Epsilion working together against the others. Just a feeling.
That's the feeling I get too, but is it real or is it what Epsilon want us to believe? I'm not sure I trust it yet.

(Yes I am am still here, mostly lurking though)

I've sent a brief message to Innovia. Vagueness was the order of business. I'm not sure how it's possible to trade without everyone knowing each others business. :crazyeye:
Hello Theoden,

The Piffles are pleased to meet your acquaintence. We are open to trading opportunities. Do you have any thoughts on how we should accomplish this? Should we consider a coordinated effort based on our current research? How should the other teams be involved?

A good start might be a 20 turn peace treaty? Renewable, of course.
When the time comes Open bordres could be considered as well.

Contact with most anyone on our team is fine but I can always be found here or IM.

Let us know your thoughts.

Whomp of the Piffles.

Epsilon's message struck me as rather funny. They are worried whether we will complete Philosophy in time. After hitting the lightbulb a couple of times, I think it will be us doing the side research rather than Epsilon.

Although, this does raise an interesting question. Currently our GM is offering to research all of Paper for us. After looking over his techs, it looks to me like he will also offer us Printing Press next. Since that is the more expensive tech, we will get more beakers from him that way. Could someone, however, double check my work on that? I wouldn't want to research Paper by hand only to find out that I was wrong.

I'm not sure how it's possible to trade without everyone knowing each others business. :crazyeye:
I'm not sure, either, Whomp. With the number of trades that we will be doing with Epsilon, I'm pretty sure the other teams are going to suspect that we are in bed together. Are we still attempting to conceal our Construction and Literature trade from Aloha? When do we want to get those techs from Epsilon?

Also, since Aloha has a Galley sailing down our coast, how do we feel about them mapping out our territory? Aloha will eventually reach Epsilon's borders. Are we concerned that Epsilon will find it suspicious that we allowed Aloha access to our borders and not them?

I hate to say it, but Epsilon seems to be a pretty good partner right now. I think it was Tubby that said they were growing on him like a foot fungus - you know, I'd kinda miss the itching and the burning at this point...

If Epsilon gets too suspicious I think I'd be frank. We had things to offer Epsilon without throwing passage into the deal, that really wasn't the case with Aloha and at the point were/are still feeling out the map and the players. We want to win. Don't read any more or less into it.

I think that is true, and respectable in both its honesty and goal. I believe Epsilon could respect that.

More correspondence from Epsilon:

- thanks KC. I’m guessing that must be a benefit of the philosophical trait? Very nice work!

We’re in no big hurry for philosophy… maybe in a few turns to help mask our cooperation for a bit longer.
We do need Machinery right away – I hope you were able to send it with the save you just played?

As soon as we have Machinery, we’ll begin work on Optics full steam as agreed. We just acquired Compass, and can transfer that to you whenever you wish (along with Construction and Literature… as promised for Machinery) – you dictate the timing, and we’ll be happy to comply.

I’ll do my best to keep you updated on our progress on Optics, and each tech after that along the new plan – it will be helpful if you do the same from your side.

To a beautiful start!

Sorry for not getting back to you. Philosophy was discovered this turn and we founded Taoism. Would you like it right away?

I dont think starting on education will be delayed. We will be in anarchy the next couple turns, but still have the GM to use on Paper or Printing Press. What does your timeline look like?

KC

What techs do we want from Epsilon, when, and in what order? I assume we want Compass right away and then construction within 10 turns.

Epsilon wants to send over the remaining techs ...

Epsilon has construction and will send it 10-14 turns from now or whenever we ask for it. The only interest in delay is to hide our deal.
Do we still want to mask our trading from Aloha? Because if we accept this trade at this time, there will be no doubt that we traded with Epsilon to get this deal done.

BTW, the terms of our Aloha trade give us 8-14 turns to deliver Construction to them.

I'd say send them over. Are we waiting on any techs from Aloha? if so I would suggest waiting to send construction until they have their end of the deal.

As far as a 3 vs 2 with us being on the 2-side... I think that it actually might be a 2-2-1 with Aloha on the outside looking in. After this current deal with Aloha, I'd advocate hugging the devil Epsilon very tightly and actually let them be in the lead and we can start to build up forces to jump ahead of them once war starts. (my bet is in 40 turns some war will break out)

Even if it were 3 vs 2 (us) we know how much more difficult it is to seize the advantage when logistics are as difficult as they are here. No need to hide anything. Either Aloha is willing to buck up and treat us properly (which I don't think they have) or the line is drawn.

Here it is

OK I finally got a response back from Innovia.

Hi Whomp,

We'd be more than happy to sign a 20-turn peace treaty as a sign of friendship. And if you should drop by feel free to join the party in one of our cities. :)

Generally, we are open to all proposals, and I don't see why we couldn't sign an open borders agreement. That just means more trade for the both of us. :)

We can't commit to a coordinated tech effort at the moment, though, but we are more than willing to trade techs on a case by case basis. We see that you have construction and philosophy. Are you interested in trading away one of those?

I don't know ... seems a bit of a non-committal message. I find it odd that it took them so long to come up with a response that basically doesn't say that much.

As for the trade proposal, or lack thereof, they really don't have anything to offer. Monotheism, which will enable Org Rel civic, is the only tech they have that we can see. And it is significantly cheaper than both Construction and Philo. If they really want to do a deal, they are going to have to tell us what they are researching or come up with a proposal themselves.

OK I'll respond accordingly. OBs necessary or just peace?

I'd rather not give Innovia OB as long as the circum nav bonus is still outstanding. Besides, based upon our new understanding of foreign trade routes, neither of us will see a dime from the extra commerce.

If Aloha was going to give Innovia Philo we could cut them (Aloha) out of any kind of deal that they were going to make. Maybe we could put a feeler out on what they wanted to give for Philo.

Maybe we shouldnt automatically refuse OB, just say we dont think we will get any trade either way without a map (when can we trade maps, paper?). Maybe give them philo for the map. Ask for Epsilon's map, and maybe if we get it first we are close to circumnav bonus (which would be nice but I would trade that for an Academy in the capital!). It wouldnt hurt to keep plugging the "Epsilon is the enemy" spin either

All that is straight of my ass though.

Any word from Innovia?

Not hearing anything after 3 days makes me think they really aren't all that serious about doing a deal with us.

I sent a pm today. I offered 20 turn peace renewable, no OBs unless there's eventual economic benefit and told them to make a proposal on our techs.

Folks, I get the impression that we are making Epsilon just a tad nervous. I really think that someone should have a chat with these folks to reassure them.

In the above screenshot, you will notice that Epsilon has moved their Axeman outside of the city to protect their Workers. Evidently, they did not trust us when I sent our Spearman up to get a better look at their city.

Also, they have a clear view of Aloha's Galley sailing off of our coast.

Also, as final evidence, we are aware of the fact that Loco and Innovia have an Open Borders agreement, and furthermore, Loco has allowed an Innovian warrior to actually travel through their lands (with 98% certainty). This suggests a great deal of trust and cooperation.
Based upon these comments, they are probably not at all comfortable about our relationship with them versus Aloha.
