Department of Stranger Affairs

Heh. Bernie or Nardo is me. Robi D will be gone for a week so BCLG will be our contact.

Should I send Innovia a message that we'll trade philo (800 beakers) for mono (120 beakers) and music (600 beakers) along with 80 beaker credit or "XX" amount of gold or free lux or food?

Its obvious to me from Aloha's message that they are not interested in doing any deals with us. Both of their offers are so unbalanced, to the point of being ridiculous. (BTW their Scout is still heading our way.)

Innovia seems to take forever to respond to any messages. Makes me wonder if they want to deal with us either. Their offers are at least fair, though.

I really hate to give up gold. Really hate it! I guess I'm just cheap that way. But, I'm starting to agree with Tubby that we might just ought pony up the 25g and buy Mono from Epsilon.

If we do decide to pay for it, though, do realize that it will probably add a turn to our Printing Press research.

Should I counter the Innovia deal with a techs with gold offer? That would help I'd think.

Well, we could offer Innovia Philo for Feud+140g. But I doubt they'd go for it. I know I certaintly wouldn't touch it.

We could also offer Innovia Philo/Theo for Feud/Music in a straight up even deal. But without Mono, we don't know if they have Theology or not. :( If they don't, they'd probably go for the deal.

We could make it contingent. I think we should make that offer. Worst case is we find out that they know theo.

I don't see any harm in it. I sure don't want to trade with Aloha if we have to give them a discount. Innovia is at least offering fair trades.

What about buying Monotheism from Epsilon? I know Tubby is in favor of it. Can we get a vote on this?

That's fine since we can't seem to structure any other ways to grab it. I'll send them our offer.

Here is a rough draft response to BCLG's message. Let me know if you all think I'm being too subtle. ;)

Aloha BCLG

Regretably we must decline your proposed trade of Theology in exchange for Paper. That amounts to a 15% discount and as we are currently in last place, it is more than we can afford.

We must also regretably decline your offer of Dyes for 15 gpt. While we are sure they are lovely, our citizens are currently quite content. Our citizens are a poor people. Recently our government opened up a state-subsidized Winery. Since then the people have seen fit to honor the name of Pifflenatress. They may be drunk, but they are happy drunks!

Now if we may discuss another issue of a more delicate nature? One of our Spearmen has reported seeing an Aloha Scout. We were wondering if you could explain your intentions vis-a-vis the mapping of our territory? Frankly our scholars can think of no peaceful reason why another civilization would want to map our territory.

We have no objections to your Galley sailing our coast. As we can think of many reasons why a peaceful civilization would explore the coastline. It opens up trade routes after all. However, why would a peaceful civilization need detailed maps of another's territory and defenses?

As I say, our scholars are mystified. Hopefully you can clarify this for them?

Yours in Peace!
Pifflenatress

I'm also going to sit on the save until tomorrow. We've got plenty of time to get some of these diplomatic wrangles worked out.

He understands that and I think it's perfect.

Aloha is gearing for war with us folks. We stole the religion from them, we are paired with Epsilon, they are scouting out our lands, they offer ridiculous trades (usually a giveaway), solid troops are available, they can be backed by Innovia, and they have no other targets.

so.. can we close borders and give them a valid reason for declaration, or continue to allow them to scout our lands and eventually declare anyway?

We should let Epsilon know about our paranoia. Maybe even spread it to them so that they will help us out.

If Aloha is going to declare, is that reason enough to NOT send that message? Or should the language be toughened up some?

BTW, the attached image is the current power graph ...

That tells me that we should be able to defend, if not go on the attack. It might behoove us to build some spears as well as BCLG enjoys the horses if you know what I mean :groucho:

Just took a look at the save for 540AD ...

Epsilon did NOT send over Theology.

Also, Innovia does not have Theology, yet. However, they do have Philosophy, now. And Epsilon now has Feudalism. It doesn't look like any cash changed hands, though.

So much for a 3-way trade involving Epsilon. :( Here are our current options:

If we want to catch up to Epsilon in technology, we've got to trade for all four of those techs. So, ideas?

why is Theology on our side for Saggioun the Wise One but it's on the other side for the other two teams?

why is Theology on our side for Saggioun the Wise One but it's on the other side for the other two teams?
Because Epsilon owes us Theology. Since we don't have it, yet the game shows it as available for us to trade. I cut/pasted it onto our side to show that we can use it in a trade with Innovia.

Epsilon should have sent it to us this past turn. Not sure why they didn't.

Edit: I'm thinking we should probably sit on the save. We need to work out a deal here with someone. And if we wait too long, Epsilon is certainly willing to sell some techs.

Pending an answer to Tubby's quesiton, it may be short-sighted but what about two lop-sided tech trades to each team to get us caught up with Epsilon? It would bring everyone to near tech-parity, and since we're on the short end that can't hurt. It may keep our diplomatic options open with other teams.

The biggest danger I see in the short term would be ticking off Epsilon. There MAY be other diplomatic options available, but right now we seem to be in bed with the Leader. I wouldn't want to do anything too damaging to that relationship.

For this to work we need Whomp to do some heavy duty spinning. Assuming of course it is a wise course of action.

Honestly, I'm not sure what to do. Innovia and Aloha have not been particularly quick in their responses. Epsilon has been great.

Any suggestions what I can send each team on offers?

We could request an extension like this in the turn tracker thread

Team Piffle requests an extension due to slow response times from other teams

I'm not sure we want to let them all know we're desperate for a deal.
