Im dividing the indians in my mod between north and south, with the north representing the Mauryans and south the Chola/Tamil, requesting help to anyone with good knowledge on the subject to provide two city lists, old cities if possible.
:)

Dont need that many since its hard to build cities in my mod, 15 to 20 sounds good :)
Thanks!
Btw, I have allready done some research and have some cities allready on the map in the beggining of the scenario, some of the names are in original form (before name changes), there're the ancient cities Harappa, Mohenjodaro, and Chanhudaro (I can replace these with mauryan ones but the scenario does start in ancient times, but its not historical accurate since i include civs like the romans and the khmer :) ), also Ujjayini, Rajagriha, Swarnagiri, Kanchipuram, Thanjavur, Madurai and Polonaruwa.
If you can also give me a name for a city in the indonesian region that may have had dravidian (or some south india dynasty) origin, that would be helpful :)

Thanks!

Unfortunately I won't be able to get to this until late Sunday night or early Monday morning (PST) due to RL commitments. But it is a high priority for me.

I'm pretty sure I have jpeg of a map of the Mauryan empire with some cities; I've also got some academic books focused on Ashoka that i can use as a source for names. As you probably know English transliterations vary the spelling of many names (like S vs Sh), and many ancient cities already had variants to their names, so don't worry too much about being exactly precisely accurate. I'll come up with Chola names also.

The names of the cities from the Harappan culture are actually modern names of near by villages, no one has really cracked the Harappan writing system well enough to know what they called their towns.

I'm sure I can come up with at least a couple of Indonesian names associated with the Indian influence as well.

I've also got a map (hard copy only) that lays out who took whose side at the battle of Kurukshetra (climax of the Mahabharata). They're listed in terms of tribal or dynastic names; but since most of them are fairly obscure they could be used for city names. If you want i can post those as well.

You also mentioned that you're including the Romans. That's actually kind of appropriate. The Romans founded a few ports on the Red Sea coast of Egypt specifically to facilitate trade with India. The imbalance of trade (lots of gold currency going to India in exchange for spices and other renewable resources) was a major concern for several of the emperors. If they hadn't been so well schooled in Alexander's misadventure, or preoccupied by border problems closer to home, there may well have been an invasion at some point.

As I said above I'll post the actual info in my Bharata Varsha Bazaar thread, with an announcement and link posted here; in the long run that info will probably be of use to others, and I started that thread in order to keep info about things Indian in one place. In future feel free to post questions over there. That's what it's for.

Cool about the harappan names, I think i'll leave them alone then :)

As for the romans, what i meant with "not historicall accurate" is that the scenario starts at a time when the more "civilized" civilizations are nearing the bronze age, but the Romans are there along with the Etruscan to the north :) Its a global scenario, there're also amerindian and mesoamerican civs. Most cities in the map didnt exist at the time the scenario starts, but they're necessary and make the game more interesting.

Yea I took a look at your thread, some great stuff there, including the weird stuff like the nuclear weapons and flying vehicles, which i've heard about before ;) Actually I've added a touch of what some may call fantasy to my scenario, there are two more advanced civilizations that start in a locked war, the two tribes descendant from atlantis, the Dravidas that migrated to southern india and possibly ethiopia and the Aryans that went to the western mediterraneum area, some things i made up myself, others were based in more than one theory about atlantis.

No problem, I got plenty of other stuff to do, in no hurry, I'll check again when you post the link ;)

Thanks mate!

The Aryans that went west are pretty clearly the invaders that brought the Bronze Age crashing down in the 2nd millennium. Amongst Tamil traditionalists and nationalists there is a belief in a homeland, now submerged in the Indian ocean, that is identified with Lemuria ( a sort of antipodes Atlantis). If you want to read more about that you might enjoy Eden in the East or Lost Land of Lemuria.

I got my ideas from a theory by a brazilian professor that believes atlantis/lemuria was located in the indonesia region, before the end of the ice age that area was a continent because the sea level was lower. If you want to take a look, here's the url: http://www.atlan.org Then I mixed it up a bit with the greek myth, that puts the atlanteans in western europe/north africa, at war with the greeks and allies, so I made a couple of alliances against the atlanteans, hoping they can drive them off europe/africa, but leaving a single atlantean city in cuba so they can continue to develop. Should be interesting :)

Eden In The East lays out very detailed and properly cited geological, genetic, and cultural evidence for exactly that theory.
