Yena01 - The Promised Land

VC:
I am open for both, I think we can discuss this during the start of the game

Let's get the game moving...

I have rewritten the top post. Read it and let me know if it need modifications.

Here are the settings

We got Cyrus which I think is an interesting choice. He is usually doing well but I have never played him before.
promised02.JPG

And here is the start position.
promised03.JPG

Not too bad. Early moves should include a worker and Mining for a gold mine. Floodplains is no big problem since we are expansive, but I will probably move 1 step south (depends on what the scout reveals). I will play and report the first turn set in about 12 hours, so you have some time for comments and discussion.

And here is the save:

Are you still looking for your last player? This sounds like an interesting variant and I've not played terra for a while, so wouldn't mind a go.

is there something wrong with the save? i can't seem to open it.

move the scout onto the gold before moving the settler anywhere... i have a sneaking suspicion that there is going to be desert down there and moving 1S will just grab us two desert tiles...

Looks like a very good start for an expansionist Civ - plenty of food, river and lots of nice plusses around, plus I haven't played Cyrus for ages..

Obviously its unlikely we will have Copper or Iron in our BFC so that should be priority for next city site.

Start looks nice and simple.

Move Scout 1 SE then decide on city site (settle in place unless something tasty is revealed as we can afford to wait for Wheel to hook up gold before hitting our happy limit.) The 2nd Blue circle to the SE suggests that will be a direction for the Scout as there must be something tasty lurking down there

Build Worker - Warrior or if you want to be conservative Warrior until Size 2 - Worker

Research, Mining - Wheel - Pottery or Mining - Bronze working?

Lets go

Cheers

Ralph

I played the initial 15 turns and bumped into our neighbours with my scouts. It is quite crowded.
promised04.JPG

Moving the scout revealed yet another gold mine! I decided to move 1S to swap 1 FP for 2 hills which I think gives a better mix of commerce/research and production. I researched mining and started BW for the bronze. With lots of neighbours we may have to fight for resources. First built was a worker, and I started building a warrior for defence.

Spoiler :

4000 BC: I move the scout and find another gold!
3960 Hut gives a map
3840 There is good land to the west
BT: I meet Frederic (NE) and Alexander (NW)
3800 I get a scout from a hut
3760 I meet Washington (E)
3720 Mining in, researching BW
3560 Gandhi appears (W)
3480 Hut gives 50 gold
3440 Louis joins the party (SE)
3400 worker to gold mountain

Here is a view of our start location. The red marks show promising sites for the next two cities, but of course it depends on where horses and bronze turns up.

Lurking

Looks like an interesting variant.

got it. looks like an excellent capital. it is often rare to find two gold that can be easily run due to the large amount of food, but food is certainly no problem with cows, an oasis and all of that floodplain.

here is a map of the area:

PromisedLandmap1.jpg

i have filled in Gandhi in the west, Washington in the North-east and Frederick in the South-east

on a separate note:

200 posts!! yay!!

decided to play turns right now as there was not much to discuss:

right at the start, we discovered one of my most hated enemies:

Civ4ScreenShot0019.jpg

Huayana. i dislike this guy. he seems perfectly capable of teching quickly and building a decent military at the same time

we popped a hut and got lucky with another scout:

Civ4ScreenShot0020.jpg

the scout survived the lion attack and is now healing.

in other news, we discovered bronze working but as the only copper in sight was in Washington's territory, we started teching animal husbandry (partly for horses, but also cause there are cows in our capital.

Civ4ScreenShot0022.jpg

and success!! there are horses near our capital. i would suggest a city to access cows, rice and horses for a very strong city. we are creative so it is no problem that none of the resources are in BFC.

Ok Got it, nice pace of game going here!

Will post thoughts today and have played and reported by the end of the weekend

Cheers

A good start. I agree on that we need a city close to the horses. Remember that we have raging barbarians on, even though I suppose they will soon run of fog to hide in.

Maybe we should start thinking of long-term goals. Since we have cheap libraries a bee-line to Writing sounds good. Do we want any wonders? It looks like Pyramids and the Oracle will be hard with this map/leader, but we can probably tech to Literature fast enough to have a good chance at GL.

OK as far as I can see the key question for this turnset is do we after wheel divert to Iron Working before going up the standard Writing - Alphabet - GL route.

the reason for diverting to iron working is that Washington has already got Bronze working adn copper in his BFC so although its not hooked up yet it will be soon which measn stealing it off him will be hard!!

The next settler is destined for Yellow Dot with Red Dot a potential follow up but I would rather definitely seize Iron with our third city.

So Proposal is
Finish Pasture
Chop Settler
Found yellow Dot
Capital post Settler grows while buidling a couple of warriors for fog busting / Garrison duties and will work 2nd gold mine as soon as poss to max research.

Research wheel then Iron working should complete my turnset..

Ok

So turn 1 2760 BC unfortunately southern scout dies unluckily to a Panther. Such is life
swarriordie.jpg

Despatch a scout to remove some fow in NW and help us determine where our 3rd city should go when IW comes in.

2720 BC. Wheel in move onto Iron Working as Discussed.
Worker goes to chop in settler for founding 2nd city claiming Horses. :coffee:

2600BC Scout finds a nice location to the NE which would be lovely if Iron pops up there!!
intcity.jpg

2520 BC A barb Archer appears which as we only have a warrior and 2 scouts could be tricky. I cant complain though as I recommended Raging Barbs. Only question is will he pillage goldmine before attacking the city. Switch production to a warrior delaying the settler but he couldn’t move out until the Barb is dealt with anyway.
barbie.jpg

2360 Gold Mine pillage knocking our research rate down significantly which will delay IW unfortunately. However at least post pillaging the Archer attacks our capital (now with 2 warriors so not sweaty) and dies. Settler completes and will move out to found Horse city.

2240 BC Pasargardae founded start on a warrior as with raging barbs on we are a trifle weak.
pasargardae.jpg

Washington has settled near where we proposed red dot but being creative we can easily win any culture battle.

2200 BC losing the goldmine was a PITA but it is nw being rebuilt and will bring research back up. Iron Working in 3 Capital is building a worker but no :hammers: invested so this can be vetoed. A warrior is moving North to Fog Bust and a scout is doing a similar job in the south. We are now in the timescale when Barbs will start swarming everywhere. There is a scout in the Capital who should be despatched to Fog Busting as well.
Cheers

The gold mine was only a minor setback, but we certainly need something better than warriors for defence as soon as possible.

A few random thoughts:
Pasargadae is in a nice spot. Once our gold mine is back up then our worker should road directly to the horses, hook them up quickly so we can get a chariot or two for the barbs.

The NE spot with the fish/marble/horses/wheat also looks sweet, and would help us get the GL. Rather too much to hope for iron to pop up here as well :). I think this site is preferable over the red dot. With the continent being crowded as it is, we need to claim this ASAP before somebody else does.

What is the plan for Persepolis, cottage spam all the flood plains?

Tech wise, we need archery and pottery pronto. What about masonry - worth it for walls with the raging barbs? After that up the usual writing/alphabet path.

will play tomorrow morning (European Time). Any suggestions are welcome.

Still nice turnset ralph.
