NiNES: A Broken Galaxy

Alas, no matter how close I am, the update won't be tonight after all. New ETA is 12 h. Gives you some more time to write some stories, good ones all around!

I think you answered your own question.

More seriously, it was because of:
  • Having about the 3rd smallest fleet in the galaxy
  • Being pointed at repeatedly (by Symphony especially) as a target
  • [REDACTED]
  • The little "altercation" between ourselves, NAM, and Fury
  • Because building a battleship when nobody else has is awesome, though I'll probably be arms-raced into building a dreadnought next turn.

I actually built the first battleship several turns back. Now with our battleships, we will be the most powerfull alliance around....:mischief:

And yes!! I am Texas.... the lone state. Fits me well.... :p

@Disenfrancised

OOC: You're basically saying "you don't/won't need to support the Furians"?

Pardon me for being slightly more honest/cynical than that. As for paranoia, take a look at this little conversation:
My paranoia? And how about the other reasons I mentioned? My security concerns are not accountable to you, ditto my fleet size, which you don't even necessarily know unless you have spies, now that I've officially broken contact and trade. In conclusion, file system consistency check off.

OOC:
No I'm saying there isn't any real dispute between the three parties that can't be resolved by talking and you two seem to be gearing up for a conflict and refusing to talk things over (by cutting communications). Only fools and zealots don't leave lines of dialog open.

That AIM conversation from 6 turns ago misses a bit out, a) any of my early colony's would have been closer to the Furians b)they were seeming very hostile at the time c) that was an OOC and idle converstion d) even then I was on an defensive salnt, no question of offensive actions against the furians was raised. Frankly bringing it in at all seems a bit suspect - you not up to making an IC justification?

Also as to your fleet size; we can listen to chatter in the Arcux system, talk to the Capellens, lots of things to find out without overt intellence gathering. And you have no way to take the moral high ground on intellegence operations anyway :p.

Now with our battleships, we will be the most powerfull alliance around....

Military expansion eh? very civilized ;). Anyway this is the high frontier - political power comes out of the barrel of a mesoderm aerating fan, not a gun ;).

IC: Your claim of "we are not building up our fleet as we believe in peaceful solutions" is something you may want to take to the USC. We counter that we are not building up our army, unlike you with your hundreds of thousands of drones.

IC:
What? So your saying you recognise the USCs moral authority to regulate this dispute? so call them in, we would if we hadn't had our communications cut off by you and the Furians.

A drone force spread evenly over our worlds, with no investment in transport implies a defensive posture that could not be used for offense without considerable changes. The units in question are for emergency reseuce and police actions and their number is merely due to the efficency of our productive establishment (for realz, I've spent less than 3 EP per world, and I haven't been aquiring weapons technology meaning the drones are not useful for offensive actions).

OOC: @erik; last reference I hope.

I actually built the first battleship several turns back. Now with our battleships, we will be the most powerfull alliance around....:mischief:

And yes!! I am Texas.... the lone state. Fits me well.... :p

Huh? I thought you had just built a command carrier... hmm, now you've got a battleship too. Didn't see it when I looked through the stats last time, since I was searching for "Battleship" and it's listed as "Battle Ship". :p

@Disenfrancised: In short, you are wrong on umpteen counts, although some may be misinterpretations, and I don't have the patience to list them now. We can start with your people at Kruger being linked to the Kalians at Sigma Draconis; my severing diplomatic relations with you does therefore not break your communications to the outside world. If it had, I would have said to allow your messages to other people to be forwarded. As it is, I'm now tempted to ask the Kalians to block you too just to stop you repeatedly calling the waaahmbulance. Please check your file system for consistency.

Long Live the Emperor!

“One is the loneliest number, the last of where there was many, the last before death takes all, the last Royal in the galaxy…” -Emperor Landis

He looked out the grand hall of the Tranquility Palace and thought about the wonders and ironies of the past 40 years. In hindsight, it had been wise of him to have left Sol with a bunch of hopeless radicals and idealists. Lawyers, doctors, businessmen, professors, bureaucrats, generally members of the bourgeoisie and other middle class people planning on entering into the wilderness to carve out a nation of their own. They had been a laughingstock back on Sol when he had first heard of it.

Yet he had come to break with his family over the issue as he spoke in favor of them. It was something of their spirit, a spirit to continue on to live somewhere else where their beliefs, their culture and way of life could prosper. It didn’t hurt that he was in love with a young and attractive Cantonese girl whose family had decided to leave when the spaceship was setting off. He had remembered that momentous day when he cast his lot with those “lunatics and hooligans” and broke with his family, his extended royal family.

A member of the House of Windsor, publicly joining “lunatics and hooligans” was a slap in the face to his royal family. Sometimes in his dreams, he revisited that single redefining amount of his life. He could remember taking all his clothes in a suitcase (they had denied him the use of a drone) and walked out the steps of Buckingham Palace. As he walked, he remembered some of his history, and in a histrionic move, gave one last look to the Palace and waved once before continuing on.

He had actually felt a tinge of regret and the feeling that in the years to come on an unknown planet, he would forever look back to his youth and wonder about the possibilities. If he had known then what was going to happen, he would not have been so melancholy. That moment, it seemed that he had lost everything. His social status and influence all gone in a sweep like it had never been.

Yet he had been welcomed and greeted by the same people who were now his subjects. They had seen in his actions, a true devotion to their cause. In their eyes, he had thrown away all the good things in life coming down from his pedestal in the galaxy to join them in their bid for a planet and for that, they had been eternally grateful.

Yet, he knew then and now that there were many who were against them and it would be an uphill struggle. In the end, he was an Emperor.

"Diplomatic Minister of the Exterior, Thomas Rang, speaking. Who the hell is this, and why are you calling me in this ridiculous fa... oh, it's you, isn't it?"
"Correct, Rang. Voice-only is far easier to secure. It's about the unknowns at Twelve-Five and Twenty-Nine."
"Right. It's been three months, hasn't it?"
"Yes. Still no response - and thanks to the gate protocols, we can be reasonably confident that our signal isn't being stopped on the way."
"So you are concluding that they're xenophobic or incapable of replying?"
"Sir, with all due respect, we concluded that after the first week."
"Ah. I can see that you're impatient. Do you want me to fast-track an embassy ship?"
"No. We've been waiting for months sending polite diplomatic messages, we can wait the week it takes to go through the proper channels."
"Convenient. Call me back in ten minutes."
Thomas Rang ended the call and rolled his eyes. As if the situation with Norsk Automated Mining weren't tense enough and demanding of attention from even the ass-end post he held, now he had to organize a shuttle to some system on the far end of nowhere. He took up a galactic chart and started mumbling to himself. "Let's see. Alpha Centauri is our closest system. We can be almost sure to get a charter ship at Sol, and if not, the Nekomi can probably help us, meaning we can take off from Rana. This puts us at Fornacis or Teegarden... we'll need help from the Hurisians, unless the unknowns have people at either of those systems." He cleared the chart and drafted a quick note to Dorothy Penelope, Minister of the Embassy to Huris.
Looking for Hurisian available ship at Fornacis or Teegarden between one week and one month for jump to unknown systems.
We'll be carrying embassy personnel to the unknown faction.
Expected return within a few months.
Ask your Hurisian friend for information on Twelve-Five and Twenty-Nine.
With that, he settled back to looking at information on the unknown faction and shortlisting diplomatic personnel and possible ships near Alpha Centauri.
"Me again. How's the procurement going?"
"Mostly fixed. Try to transfer some intern out to your station for sending messages, then come home. We'll want to cover our asses."
"Already done. Do try to keep up with current events, we've got this wonderful new woman in charge here, and she scheduled it the day before yesterday, since the three-month limit was coming up."
"Excellent."
"That will be all."

Year 11

The galaxy was pulling ever closer to the precipice as war was looming higher and higner. In fact, war had already come, though not on the galaxy-spanning inter-faction scale. Rather it was an old hotspot that once more erupted, perhaps as a precursor to something larger.

For years, Rana had been in desperate need of resources, to heal its wounds and rebuild its broken industry and economy. And ever since the last war had ended, and the referendum had been held, the Nekomi had seemingly turned their attention elsewhere. Public augmentation programs were kept up, but while genetic modifications were popular amongst the young, it could not in any way make up for the economic neglect. Meanwhile, just a gate's hop away, Kapteyn was prospering under the kind eyes of the U.S.C., and many Rananese regretted the choice they had made back when it mattered. Now they had obviously had enough, the keg was full, the last drop had fallen. Anti-Nekomi riots spread like wildfires and quickly got out of hand. Ironically, this very year the Nekomi had finally decided to send that long-sought economic aide, and local governors tried to use this fact to reason with the rioters, but to no avail. The local standing army had to be put in to calm things down, with many brutal clashes between them and local militias resulting. The riots were brought largely under control, but there was a high price to it.

Due to recent history events, the newly reformed U.P.N.C.S., spokescouncil of Sol, were obviously very touchy about what they percieved as oppression. They quickly condemned the actions taken by the army at Rana, and promtly requested that the whole of the U.S.C. join Sol in a saction of Nekomi economy until the oppression had ceased. With the political power already ceded to the U.P.N.C.S., the U.S.C. had little choice but to grudgingly comply, cutting off all Nekomi trade via Sol and Kapteyn. This move is a severe blow to Nekomi economy, remains to see if the response will be that of a chided pet or a wounded, cornered beast.

In a different theatre, another Nekomi dispute got a peaceful solution when the Mizar system was ceded, for a small fee, to the Colonial Federation of Sezuren. Not only that, but the two also agreed on a defensive alliance, encompassing also the Emergents of Providence and the Furians. It seems this new-founded power bloc may well have its hands full from the get-go.

Mira was the scene of a much less friendly take-over, when the Emergents disregarded all Capellan claims to the system and decided to colonize. This act will surely add further fuel to the flames of the already stepped-up "affair" regarding Acrux and Kruger. The stationed Furian forces at the latter system are clearly growing restless over the talked-up situation, and incidents have been close on several occasions. Furian command has seemed unwilling to do more than talk loudly thus far though, as if they are waiting for something to go down first...

Trades for technologic rediscoveries continued to proliferate, and several factions previously behind in the race have suddenly find themselves on par with even some of the more advanced star nations. Most notable is the continued good-will between the governments of Kalia and Huris, who agreed on an all-out distribution of knowlegde to one another as a natural extension to their military alliance.

Quite opposite to this, officials of the Cybran Dominion are not likely to hold the Capellans in a very high regard after an incident with corrupted data. A deal was struck, information sent, but where the Capellans got the full deal, what the Cybrans received was to a large extent pure garble. The Capellans are claiming technological difficulties in transfering data over such distances, but the Cybran Dominion is not known for its forgiveness.

Random mini-spotlight:

When the space ship descended from the skies, people who saw it first thought they were dreaming, like so many times before. After many long years, some would say almost twenty, they had all but given up the thought of other survivors out there, or at least any with space faring capabilities that would come to their rescue and aid. The initial reactions now were not the same overwhelming gratitude of those refugees that had been encountered early after the scourge. These were people who had made a life for themselves in the harsh post-scourge environment, and who were doin gbetter and better, if not exactly good. Still, the travellers were well received, and the aide they brought was gratefully accepted. The shock came only later, when the people of rocky Lacaille came to understand that others had known of their existance for many years without even bothering to make contact. Gratitude was quickly mixed with anger, though not at the visiting U.S.C. benefactors, but at the so called "Democratic" Autarchy of Huris who seemingly had claimed dominion over their system, but hadn't even bothered to contact its residents. Local leaders quickly decided to claim allegiance to the faction of Sol, the U.S.C. who had the humanity to send aide despite the diplomatic boundaries. U.S.C. officals have yet to respond in this diplomatically delicate situation.

Sorry about the long wait, I simply don't know what caused this extreme bout of procrastination. It's something I rarely experience, and I hope it won't happen again. Stats have been complete since yesterday, but I just couldn't seem to write. Oh well, it's up now anyway, except story bonuses (will start assigning right after posting this) and trade (will take a few minutes to calculate once story bonuses are up).

Iggy, the numbers listed after your cruiser represent the (base) price that needs to be payed to repair it (subject to any bonuses). Without paying, it won't be repaired.

OOC. Okay, , that was unexpected. and most likely caused by cover action, as this was the first i heard about it. I also wish to point Out I DID invest in Rana after the war. when the war ended, it was at 22 PP. I advanced that to 30PP within two years. some of that was due to stories, but I did repair and invest. tot he limit of ecnomic fisability to boot. *sigh* please, a full explination and breifing on the status of my systmes and anything I should know about their conditions in my PM please.

Splendid update Niklas. Thanks for the info.

We had discussed this earlier, and we believed we had an understanding.

The former leader, Timas Minell, dispatched a ship which is to land on Lacaille shortly, to help the local residents redevelop the area. It si due to arrive in a few months from now.

We acted as soon as we became aware of the situation.

Sorry, I cannot possibly cover everything you might need to know in your PMs. If there's something you wonder about, you should ask me specifically, and I will answer.

Huzzah for good relations :)

Nice update, there seems to be enough "incidents" to keep the diplo side of things busy for a while...

William Enseth cradled his aching head following a particularly brutal media question session. What a time to take on this job. Timas had not been exaggerating in the least.

William had done what most politicians had not. He had told the truth. And naturally, he had not been believed.

Timas Minell had become aware of the Lacaille situation only a few months ago. A USC scouting craft had detected the telltale radiation signature of civilization, one that had been missed by the Hurisian scouts several years earlier. He then informed Enseth, who immediately sent a transport with personnel and supplies to Lacaille. Enseth became aware as soon as Minell told him.

Of course, no one believed him. People wanted to believe that he was watching the people of Lacaille with amusement, consciously choosing to not help them.

Most definitely not! What kind of human would take pleasure from that?

And all the blame fell on his shoulders. Autarch Minell, of course, could do no wrong… it was a matter for his second-in-command- Enseth.

Why… oh why had the USC sent a ship? Enseth admitted it, he had not spoken publically about this because he feared the backlash. He would quietly help the native population of Lacaille, and once the colony ship arrived (it was already en route) there would be nothing of it. But now… the Autarch of Huris cradled his head again, the people of Lacaille would be furious. Perhaps they would understand… but Enseth knew human nature too well- people take much time to forgive.

He would send help to the planet, of course. But it would all seem shallow, trying to buy back his face in the eyes of others.

Pausing for a brief time, Enseth straightened his back.

“Honesty is the best policy.” He breathed.

The second Autarch of Huris left his quiet office and set out for what would surely be a brutally withering session in the Senate.

To: People of Lacaille
From: William Enseth, Leader of Huris

Firstly, I would like to offer you my heartfelt apology for the years you spent struggling to survive. I want you to know that it was not out of malice, cruelty or callousness, but out of ignorance. I and my people knew not that you had survived beyond the brutal years of the scourge.

We became aware of it only a few months ago due to a more recent survey of the system by the USC (the people who landed on your planet). A ship was dispatched once we became aware of your existence, and it will arrive very shortly so our peoples may speak face to face.

We shall speak again soon, thank you for your time.

TO: Democratic Autarchy of Huris
FROM: United Systems Commonwealth

We indeed did come to a satisfactory conclusion, and we did indeed choose to honor it. We have laid no claims upon the Lacaille System nor established any long-term presence nor infrastructure there. We have merely dispatched a humanitarian aide mission to distribute supplies amongst the people. When people's lives are in the balance, no response is fast enough. This aspect was not covered under our discussion at any point in time, and therefore we saw no harm in doing what was good for the people of the planet.

It is unfortunate that they learned of the situation in the manner they did, and we apologize for any diplomatic duress it may cause the Autarchy in future dealings with them, however we cannot be held responsible for bureaucratic oversight* on the part of the Autarchy's government, merely our own. That stated, we issue a formal apology to the Autarchy for the actions of our relief personnel in disclosing such information on their own accord, and state that the personnel involved will be rotated to other, less sensitive positions.

We again state that we have no designs upon the Lacaille system and if the Autarchy is interested we are willing to intermediate in more peaceful relations between the people of that system and the Autarchy's government.

TO: Nekomi
FROM: United Systems Commonwealth

Unfortunately the reaction by localized Nekomi military forces stationed on Rana to public unrest there has forced the USC to adhere to the mandate of the UPNCS that an economic blockade be imposed upon all Nekomi ships and trade until such time as the situation has been stabilized and the concerns of the citizens of Rana have been adequately redressed. It is expected the UPNCS will issue a formal public statement as to its concerns shortly.

* OOC: The system has been listed as having refugees since it was first discovered about 8 turns ago. Admittedly I just noticed it myself, but I figured since you built a comm-bunker there you'd have taken note. I didn't notice it by sending a ship--I've had no ships there for turns and turns--I saw it by looking at the listing. That would probably mean looking at public exploration data, and in game consequences, that would appear to be at best misplaced paperwork regarding the situation. Given your ship still has yet to arrive either, I'd say my decision to send such aide wasn't entirely misplaced. But an agreement is an agreement; I'm not going to try and colonize the system.
