THE CIV OF THE WEEK MAIN THREAD HAS MOVED HERE

Civ of the Week

Civ of the Week is a “project” aiming at bringing you a new, fresh, exotic, and most of all, random, civ every 1-2 weeks, from all corners of the globe, from the Vietnamese to the Mittanni to the Iraqis.
Each civilization will be available in vanilla and warlords, and will feature full civilopedia text entires, 1-2 leaders, a UU, a UB, audio, and full graphics.

Because of the quick speed at which the civs are produced, they may not be as high quality as other well-planned custom civs, but hopefully, the civs will be playable at a decently enjoyable level.

The purpose of Civ of the Week, then, is two-fold:

1. To bring you random civs that would probably not have been chosen as civilizations first of all, and to provide a new, more exotic, more interesting experience in choosing civilizations.

2. To promote more knowledge of lesser-known peoples, cultures, and histories.

Otherwise, then, enjoy!

This week’s civ is:

VIETNAM

To install, simply put the folder in the zip in your mod folder.

Name: Vietnamese Empire

Description: The Vietnamese are a hardy race, known famous worldwide for being, somehow, able to take on superpowers and regional powers in a defensive fight.
A Vietnamese civilization had been previously made by Q-Meister, but it seems he has stopped updating it. Expectedly, the civilization had a modern focus, with Ho Chi Minh as leader and the VietCong as the UU.
Vietnam, however, is more than the Vietnam War, and has a long history going back to 2000 BCE, according to most legends. It was conquered by Han China in 111 BCE, and was pretty much another province of China for about 1000 years, with small periods of independence, the most famous being the Trung's sisters' rebellion (40-43 CE), and the First Ly Dynasty (c. 500s CE). In 939 CE, the Vietnamese were able to sucessfully gain complete independence from China.

Following this, the Tran dynasty ruled Vietnam, bringing it to one of its first peaks of regional power. However, the Tran dynasty slowly collapsed after a sucessful defense against three Mongol invasions. It finally ended, and years after that, in 1408 CE, the Ming dynasty of China invaded and conquered Vietnam.

The Vietnamese, under the new Le Dynasty, kicked out the Ming by 1425 CE, and the most able dynasty ruled Vietnam for more than two centuries. However, by the 1600s, Vietnam had fallen under civil war, and remained in that state even up to the late 1700s.

The Tay Son brothers, in the 1780s, led a sucessful rebellion to overthrow their rulers, the Nguyen faction. The ablest became the Emperor Quang Truong, and was able to nearly reunify Vietnam, defeat the Qing and the Thai, and plan for his invasion of China, which, had he not died young, been quite a sucess.

After Quang Truong's death, the Nguyen returned to their lands and reunified Vietnam with French help. This, however, only made the French more interested in colonizing Vietnam, and by the mid-1800s, under various pretexts, they did just so, and Vietnam became another colony of the imperialistic ambitions of France.

However, various rebellions and revolts came through in the early 1900s, the most sucessful, being, obviously, the communists. After World War II, when France refused to give up Vietnam as a colony, the communists dealt a blow to the French at the battle of Dien Bien Phu. France gave up Vietnam, and the country was by international law split into two separate states - North Vietnam and South Vietnam.

And this then was the beginning of the infamous Vietnam War, which I need not elaborate on. After the war, the Vietnamese repelled a Chinese invasion.

Today, Vietnam is an emerging international country, with a growing economy. However, the fact that the Vietnamese hatred of China runs in their blood and veins will keep Vietnam from buddying up with China, and a friendship with America is plausible. Still, Vietnam is ruled by communists.

Leaders:

Quang Truong (Expansive, Creative) (Favorite Civic – Bureaucracy)
Trung Trac (Aggressive, Organized) (Favorite Civic – Nationhood)

UU:

Vietnamese Warrior (Replaces Maceman) – Starts with Amphibious and Woodsman II promotions, and one first strike

UB (for warlords version):

Noodle House (Supermarket) - +2 :)

Other notes:

- For those who still like the VietCong, a flavor unit, replacing the marine, is also included.
- WARNING: FOR WARLORDS VERSION, BECAUSE I DO NOT HAVE WARLORDS MYSELF, I AM UNABLE TO TEST THIS VERSION. PLEASE REPORT ANY BUGS OR ISSUES

Thanks to:

the unique problem its 'cause one eye of gengis k... *caham* Quang Trung is... completely white :0

great work!

thanks!

well, technically there are 2 UUs, but the VietCong is just a flavor unit, so no bonuses. but, yea, its there.

and for Quang Trung's eye... do youmean the sunlight is too much, or is the eye actually white?

oh, and a warlords version of vietnam should be finished this weekend (its kinda hard to do it without the actually thing installed)... and hopefully i can finish manchuria by next week.

woo! Manchuria!

famous for...being taken over by china/japan/russia, and having lots of iron and coal? Count me in!

and also famous for being the nationality of the last legitimate dynasty of China, the Qing, which had to deal with Opium problems in the 1800s. yes, opium, the drug...

i just hope the eye problem is just a graphics problem in your computer :) ... but i'll look into it, anyways.

as for the wonders, it is very similar to making a building. you can to this link: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=188708

the only difference between making a building and a wonder is that in the "buildingclassinfos.xml", make sure the entry for the wonder looks like this (the bolded part):

<BuildingClassInfo>
<Type>BUILDINGCLASS_VERSAILLES</Type>
<Description>TXT_KEY_BUILDING_VERSAILLES</Description>
<iMaxGlobalInstances>1</iMaxGlobalInstances>
<iMaxTeamInstances>-1</iMaxTeamInstances>
<iMaxPlayerInstances>-1</iMaxPlayerInstances>

<iExtraPlayerInstances>0</iExtraPlayerInstances>
<bNoLimit>0</bNoLimit>
<DefaultBuilding>BUILDING_VERSAILLES</DefaultBuilding>
<VictoryThresholds/>
</BuildingClassInfo>

hope that helps.

@everyone else: Vietnam for Warlords should be downloadable by tomorrow or the day after.

hm.. what will be your next civilizations? :)

Vietnam for Warlords should be downloadable real soon, and i'm more than halfway done with my next civ, Manchuia. after that, it'll be Manchuria for Warlords and the Hyksos (the Hyksos were, supposedly, a bunch of nomads who invaded Ancient Egypt and established two dynasties there; they were important to Egyptian history by showing the Egyptians the usage of Chariots in battle).

ok... WARLORDS VERSION FOR VIETNAM IS NOW AVAILABLE!!! (warning: as i don't have warlords, there is surely to be some bugs in it... please report any!)

enjoy!

id like to report a major bug in the warlords version, somehow there aren't any Unique units for any civ! not in Vietnam or any of the other normal civs at all. when i load up the mod, it loads bout 3/4 of the way up till [Vietnam] XML (uncached) and then a load of errors pops up one after the other, first one says:
"Failed Loading XML file XML\Units/CIV4UnitInfos.xml. [.\FXml.cpp:133] Error parsing XML File -
File: XML\Units/CIV4UnitInfos.xml
Reason: Element content is invalid according to the DTD/Schema.
Expecting: {x-schema:CIVUnitSchema.xml}UnitClassTargets.
Line: 4136,13
Source: <UnitAIs>"
2nd says "LoadXML call failed for Units/CIV4UnitInfos.xml. Current XML file is: Units/CIV4Buildinfos.xml" followed by pretty much the same format as "Tag: UNIT_(insert all civs here)_(insert Unique Unit here) in Info class was incorrect Current XML file is: Civilizations/CIV4CivilizationInfos.xml"
after clicking all the ok's, i can still play, just without Unique Units, the unique buildings work as ive seen in the civilpedia at least.

hope this error report helps? i would really like to get it all up cause ever since i played civ 2, ive always wanted Vietnam as a civ :)

thanks for the report. i guess i had a typo or something in the XML files... il'll go check it ou.
