Another thing I forgot when putting together that list. The Dnieper is all wrong. It angers me no end whenever I place Kiev on the map.

Bascially, outside of Europe, we need a lot more rivers and for existing rivers to be fixed more than anything else right now.
I'm failing to see the utility in fixing the current map when [snip] already exist, and were brought into existence for the very reason that the current map will always remain grossly inaccurate relative to something professionally made or machine-generated. It isn't difficult to stylize one of the newer ones to have thicker borders or whatever else that might be odious about them if that's the issue.

Oh yeah.. I remember trying to place Kiyevgarad (das' capital in LINES).

Quite true.

As a further addition to my thoughts: the simple fact of the matter is since the "Default" map is hand-drawn it will never be terribly accurate. It's really just that simple. The "North King" version is a big improvement over the "Jason" one, to be sure, but it still uses the Jason model as a base, and therefore will carry all the flaws inherent too. The only way you're going to make it much better is to redo it from scratch, and there's no need to do that when you can just take one of the two above.

I know I got fed up with the Jason version when trying to place cities in stSKNES5 and I've championed greatly accuracy ever since. I have to give NK due credit for improving the map by leaps and bounds but that map's strong point in my opinion is ease of use, not accuracy. A machine-generated Earth map, or one produced by a cartographic agency, is simply going to be better than any that we can draw by hand in representing accuracy. If that's your goal, there's no reason to stick to the current map or modifying it very much at all, because it's never going to be all that satisfying in that particular realm.

Of the two, the larger tends to be better, simply on accord of having rivers already placed, although it's rather easy to add them to the other one. On another note, if anyone wants "spiffy" blank versions of either of those two maps, I could generate them fairly quickly. Might do so for fun soon anyway.

I elected to go with North America :p

He sliced up a few states (notably Texas and California), merged a few others (Montana and Wyoming) and several Mexican and Latin American states, so my money would be on intentional, personally. Having that many territories seems somewhat superfluous; a bit more merging in the US would probably be wise.

I'm about 5 provinces ahead of the ideal since it's designed for 8 players. I suppose I could either eliminate some more states or start blocking off places like Iceland and Greenland.

Recombining Texas and Cali would be a start; reduce 5 to 2. Smaller territories should be combined instead of reducing larger ones, methinks.

Very nice, TBR.

I would join together a few of the smaller New England states, for purely aesthetical reasons. Trying to cram in units and possible SCs in such small areas doesn't seem feasible.

The Great Lakes pose an interesting strategic situation. How many separate coasts does Ontario have? My guess would be three - one towards Hudson Bay (nc), one towards Lake Superior and Lake Huron (sc), and a separate one towards Lake Ontario (ec). To get from Lake Ontario to Lake Hudson, you must go via Lake Erie.

Define "spiffy". I've been contemplating switching over for some time now, but a blank map would have to be quite unlike your own in order to justify that. No offense, but I do think black for blank areas is hideous, and most of the special effects are hard to work with anyway.

Yah I agree with niklas. The North east and east for that matter seems to crowded imo.

DISUNITE COLORADO, ARIZONA, AND NEVADA! The west is empty. Unite differnet parts of New England.

The ECs are way off for the 800 CE map. Charlemagne's Empire should have no more than 5 and certainly fewer than the Byzantine Empire.
