Update I
Year 1751
Opening Comments: Well here it begins the long and probably un-fun for me task of updating this NES weekly. All for your pleasure of course. I am aiming for this Update to be decent. Do not harass me if its not. I just ate a delicious steak which I cooked myself and the after thought may throw me off.
Non Military Events:
Beginning in the United Kingdom of Great Britain. Naval technology increases bring about the Ship of the Line. Triple Deck 130 gun behemoths that truly rule the seas. Along with this is an increased interest in colonialism. Hawaii, Australia and California are the key areas. But they are not alone in these colonial endeavors. Even with claims made on the continent of Australia, some still seek to own it. This made the British crown very angry as the entire area of Australia had been promised to the peoples and to the King. Hanover sees this as dishonorable for the Netherlands to break such a claim treaty against their allies. Nearly united allies at that. An invasion of the Netherlands was threatened if the colonies were not handed over to Britain immediately. At the same time an alliance with Poland is founded in the growing issues of European politics. A mission is established in Kanem-Bornu to talk with the people and possibly secure future trade. Equal treatments of Irish Catholics raises awareness that the British care for them to some extent.
The issues with the British really upset the Netherlands. They see no man can claim the lands yet explored. The issue has yet to be resolved or bring about large scale conflict. But it seems it may. The Dutch also expand their territories on most of the other continents as well. Building a large army of Frankish men. It is yet unclear what will come of the conflicts between the two colonial nations.
The Kingdom of Aquitaine unlike its colonial counterparts spends most of its resources investing on internal programs. Increasing the overall economic strength and combating inflation from the colonies. The people grow tired of a split France and cry out for Unity. With Aquitaine becoming the sole French nation of course. The Burgundies do not like this idea as suspected and out right tell their southern brothers to shut up and mind their own.
Burgundy does much of nothing beyond defending itself from possible invasion from the British. However the British are not interested in them at this time.
The Holy Roman Empire becomes very outgoing and plans to rebuild the former glory of the Empire spread. Bringing to the invasion of Bohemia.
Hungary does not agree with the invasion of Bohemia and counter invades. Causes chain reaction. -see spotlight-
Poland-Lithuania has a permanent casus belli on Romania for Hungarian claims on the region. Mass conversion of Orthodox to Catholic causes troubles in the countryside but nothing major as of yet. Russia is displeased. As a part of the casus belli Poland invades Romania being apart of the great war. - See spotlight-
Portugal does mostly colonial expansion. Building up large ports in the Azores and Niger areas.
Scandinavia goes through many changes politically. Renamed the Union of All Norsemen. King Christian institutes a Norsemen constitution and brings the ancient capitals of his lands to the status of regional Capitals. Unifying the culture even more so. Colonies are extended with focus on Africa and Central America mostly.
Moving out of Europe we go to the Middle Kingdom, China. Many reforms are brought by the Emperor. Living standards are increased substantially. Raising the peoples of this nation out of the slums and into something a bit better. Something they can thank the Emperor for. In competition with European nations the Emperor builds new armed forces. Heavy Calvary. Beijing is overhauled and the city prospers. Trade coming from the innards of China go through Beijing and the seat of the Emperors power grows. Heavy reforms to combat any possible drug trafficking or drug use are put into use. Stopping the small but growing trade of tobacco and other “drugs”. Taxes on peasants are lowered and even with lowering the Emperors income it aids his popularity. A system of weights, measurements and regions of the nation are implemented. Aiding tax collection greatly. Harsh death penalties for other misc. things as always. Police/Militia forces are started to lower corruption and defend the areas the main army cannot.
Japan goes through a time of great educational thinking and military leadership. Increasing the knowledge in most areas slightly.
The Incan Empire does much the same as Japan. Introducing a more European like school system. Course not everyone goes to them yet nor is there really much to teach.
Tarascan goes through a economic boom. Unfortunately the British have other plans.
The Russian America Company to goes under a change. The name is now the Pacific American Company. The capital is moved further south away from the seriously cold and into an area more likely to boom into trade and bring more shipping companies in.
Military Events:
The British invasion of Tarascan was expected as they have been expanding their holdings in the area for years. But Tarascan was not ready for the invasion. Nor the direction it came from. A naval landing on the western coast of Tarascan territory completely through them off and the large march through the center and to the British colonies on the other coast was quick and very bloody. The British lost very few men and the Tarascan country’s outskirts fell into rebellion. There is no hope left as they are outgunned and numbered. The British hold the economic core of the country and await the surrender.
(-1 Division Britain, -18 Divisions Tarscan *some to desertion*)
The Norsemen invasion of Finland went rather smoothly as well. The multi-front advance of the Norsemen really through the Finnish forces off track. They would march south only to have to turn around to march to fight the new threat from the north. This led to exhaustion of the troops and a lack of supplies. The Norsemen armies cleaned up the tired Finnish men quite nicely. The march down the coast and to Helsinki went fast with little offense. Helsinki itself refused to surrender upon the arrival of the Norsemen armies. It held out for the later parts of the year but is surrounded by the Norse armies and will starve out during the winter as the Norse have planned.
(-4 Divisions Norsemen, -7 Divisions Finland)
Spotlight: War of Coincidence
What happens when a chain reaction of alliances and adventurous leaders comes to play in Europe?
It all began as two separate conflicts. The Venetians were hoping to crush the Spanish fleet and pick off Italy in a quick war that wouldn’t bring many casualties. However before this war was started the ambitious Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire decided it was once again time for his empire to be strong and a power in Europe. The invasion of Bohemia was on. Little to his knowledge or perhaps due to his ignorance he forgot about Hungary and Poland being his enemies and seeing Bohemia as a perfect reason to step in and remove him. Well when this took place Frederick IV of Brandenburg saw it his time to claim Prussia from the Polish and to joined in. But not on the side of the Holy Roman Emperor but on his own side, Indirectly helping him. The same time the Polish and Hungarian forces invaded Romania on the claims made by Hungary and supported by Poland. A bloody mess.
In early spring when the weather was suitable for war. The Holy Roman Emperor invaded Bohemia with a large army. Quickly defeating his enemy and sure of success. A month later the King of Hungary declared war on the Emperor for disrupting peace in Europe. Poland joined suit a week later. This was the perfect time to invade Romania and Hungary to invaded them claiming they helped the HRE. Which was a lie but the people believed it. Plus the claims on the rich lands was enough of a reason to invade. Both fronts quickly came to a stand still. Somehow out of luck the sides remained quite for much of the early summer. Spain had declared its support of the HRE as their ties go back many generations. During this time Venice had launched its surprise attack on Spanish holdings in Italy. Claiming them for Venice with the right as Italians. Spain reacted with the built up army and navy. Losing much of Italy in the process but able to hold on.
During the late summer the Polish armies were surprised to here yet another enemy has entered the war. Brandenburg. Led by a very qualified Frederick IV invaded the north. On his on and with intents of victory and the conquest of Prussia. His armies met little resistance in the early weeks. But the Polish had huge armies waiting and they sent them to fight. A game of cat and mouse, like a puzzle this war was. Frederick wouldn’t allow himself to be confronted by the larger armies of Poland and went around them all together. They did meet once but Frederick escaped and pushed on into Prussia. The polish troops marched into Brandenburg in hopes of ending their war. Home reserves stopped them and now the war to is staled.
Russia has yet to answer whether or not it will join in the war against the Polish. As they have persecuted and converted Orthodox Christians throughout the lands.
Venetian forces land in Sicily, Malta, Corsica and Sardinia. With high success rates. The Spanish navy cannot reinforce these areas without risking being sunk by the larger Venetian navy.
Late in the year the HRE invaded Venice by request of the King of Spain. He had no success in this campaign and failed to gain any land. Only being pushed back north by the Venetian reserves. As it now stands this is perhaps the largest war in European history. Depending on the joining of Russia and Norsemen this war could go either way.
(-15 Squadrons, -7 Divisions, -1 Marine Division Venice, -8 Divisions, -19 Squadrons Spain, -10 Divisions HRE, -5 Divisions Brandenburg, -14 Divisions Poland, -6 Divisions Hungary,-9 Divisions Romania *Includes Militia* - Bohemian Army and Government)
