Upgrade problems with Civ4 1.61 -> 1.74 & Warlords 2.08 -> 2.13

Both my Civ4 and Warlords are installed on a USB drive (not C: which didn't have enough free space), but the upgrade program seems to have installed its files in C:\Program Files\... (I'm not talking about the portion of Civ4 that resides in one's profile, which is often on the C: drive.)

Now, Civ4 doesn't work and Warlords still runs 2.08 and the upgrade program thinks that 2.13 is installed.

I corrected the INSTALLDIR in the registry for both Civ4 and Warlords via regedit to point to where these programs are installed (again not the C drive) and tried both upgrades again. The program changes the INSTALLDIR back to C:\Program Files\... and installs the updated files there.

Are the upgrade programs broken with regard to Civ4 and WL installed on a non-C drive? There is no possible way to upgrade the files of a program on a non-C drive by installing the patch files on the C drive. The old files stay on the non-C drive and all the new files go to the C drive, but all the files that didn't change are still on the non-C drive. This results in a broken upgrade, or at best, no upgrade at all.

How does one tell these upgrade programs where the program they are supposed to upgrade is?

Thanks,

Why don't you try updating from inside the game itself?

The Civ4 1.61 and WL 2.08 patch updates worked fine from within the game (installing on the correct non-C drive).

However, WL 2.13 patch update would download from within the game, but failed (generated an error and aborted) to execute there. I had to run it manually.

My Civ4 and WL are installed on a non-C drive and patches 1.74 and 2.13 install on the C drive (no matter what I try).

So, I thought that I could simply move the two trees (directory structure and files) that the two patches installed on the C drive to the respective Civ4 and WL main directories. The move when smoothly, but ...

Civ4 still immediately fails - now it is a different error though ...
Now WL no longer runs version 2.08, but also fails exactly as
Civ4 now fails ...

Both Civ4 1.74 and WL 2.13 fail immediately with this error ...

The dynamic link library D3DX9_32.DLL could not be found ...

I think I'm getting closer to a working pair of upgrades, since I've seen a solution to the above error somewhere in the forums.

I'll post any progress (or lack there of) I make, in case anyone has the non-C drive installed Civ4 and WL with 1.74 and 2.13 upgrade issues like I do.

You need to update DirectX if you're getting the D3DX9 error :) It's a sticky on the top of this forum, here. Hope your problems are fixed after this :)

i am having a similiar problem for Warlords 2.13. Currently i have ver 2.08, and my game is installed on an exterior hard drive. i was able to fully download, but when the installer ran for the patch, an error would 1 min later with no progress on the bar that said:
Feature transfer error (at top)
Feature: DefaultFeature
Component:
File:
Error: Catastrophic failure

OK

As soon as i click ok, the installer closes. I dont what to do, and i tried the dl from the site and the game a couple of times w/ the same error

I saw a thread the other day with someone having that type of error, Kilkill. I'll try to find the link for you, but I don't know if they ever found a solution.

Here's the link. It looks like nobody has responded yet. Sorry :(

Thanks for the tip, reclaimer122!

I did the DirectX upgrade as you suggested, including the GenuineCheck for a valid MS Windows 2000 installation (which in my opinion should be illegal - I don't believe one should be forced to reveal everything on one's machine to Microsoft in exchange for an operating system update.)

---

I now have a fully functional Civ4 v1.74 and WL v2.13 installations on my non-C (USB) drive, just where I originally installed them from CD long ago.

Thanks again to all who helped me overcome this issue.

The automatic 1.74 and 2.13 updates never worked for me. The manually executed 1.74 and 2.13 updates always were "successful", but installed the updates on the C drive rather than the drive that Civ 4 and WL were on.

Do you have enough space on the C drive for the update files?

Your issue appears to be a bit deeper that the one I described in this thread. Perhaps you could start your own thread concerning your issue or follow up on the thread that reclaimer222 mentioned above.

Good luck,

Glad to see your game is working again :)

To KilKill: It looks like nobody is responding to that thread I gave you. You should try posting your own and see if anybody can help.

thnx for trying to help ill post another thread and see if anyone can help me
