A message from Innovia was in our inbox ...

Greetings Team Piffle,

Well we finally heard from Aloha. We got them to drop all of their demands at least. They are willing to accept straight peace but I think you'll want something more than that. 2-3 GP and 50 GPT is imposable for them though. I think that's about all we can do for now until you two find a little common ground on the terms.

Let us know what you decide,

I sent a message a couple of weeks ago to Epsilon regarding the tech deal. Here is the response I got back from General W:

Conroe,

We're glad to hear you're still on-board for trading. No problem about
Steam Power, we'll just adjust the plan.
How does this look?

Epsilon Gives:
1. Scientific Method (2400)
2. Communism (2800)
3. Constitution (2000)
4. Biology (3600)
5. Corporation (1600)
6. Assembly Line (5000)
= 17,400 total

Piffle Gives:
1. Steam Power (3200)
2. Physics (4000) + keep Great Scientist
3. Railroad (4500)
4. Electricity (4500)
= 16,200 total

Let us know what you think!

To victory!

It is slightly better (in terms of beakers) than the last one. I can't help but suspect, though, that the deal helps Epsilon more than us. :undecide:

We probably need to vote on the direction that we want to go. Do we want to do the tech deal with Epsilon? Or do we want Innovia's proposal of backstabbing Epsilon? My vote is the tech deal since Innovia isn't offering anything.

Thoughts? Votes?

As much as I don't like it we some to be between a rock and a hard place on this one.

I'm out of town today till Monday watching my Bears get thrashed by the Chargers so if someone wants to email Innovia if they can expand on any deals that might help.

We should push from something for Aloha even if it is something small (and even if we don't realistically expect to get it). Put it this way to Innovia: they're not just asking us to take peace with Aloha, but they're asking for us to commit against Epsilon as soon as we do so.

EDIT: In hopes of honing the discussion on this topic, I've started a thread here

A note from our Epsilonian friends ....

Dear Piffle Allies,

We hope things are progressing smoothly in the war on Aloha. Seems
like it's been a long time... but that's probably just the glacial turn
pace lately. With luck, we'll be down to 4 teams here before too much
longer, and then things might move a bit more rapidly.
Can you give us an update on your progress?

We'd like to propose sending you some more happy resources - Do you
think you might be able to get a second source of silver any time
soon? If so, we'd be happy to send you spices now, and you can repay
us with the extra silver when you get it.

We hope you're now on the verge of getting Steam Power? We stand ready
to send you Scientific Method & Constitution for it as soon as you're
ready!

All the best,
Your Allies,

Any thoughts on a response?

Edit: Don't know if it matters, but Aloha has just learned Sci Method.

I received this message from Epsilon in my PM box yesterday. I was rather surprised because I thought we were going to negotiate some tech trading ...

Dear Conroe,

We know you've got your hands full as sole ruler of Piffle - but we're hoping we might be able to get an update from you on the status of your research on Steam Power? We need to know how far away you are, so that we can better plan our next step to Assembly Line.

Also - we may be in a position soon to offer you some additional help with your war on Aloha. What could we do that would most help you? Some more Ships? Gold? Luxury Spices? We're open to any ideas you have.

Looking forward to hearing back from you,

Would it be possible for one of our diplomats to respond to this note? Are we still doing a tech deal with Epsilon? Also, how do we want to handle the war with Aloha?

A response from Aloha ...

Hey, Robi!

I know you offered a 15 turn cease fire in exchange for upgrading. I don't know if that offer is still on the table or not. But I would like to see this game get upgraded. Would Aloha accept a straight up peace deal in exchange for upgrading?

Hi Conroe,

The offer still is on the table. A couple of things need to be clarified.

Firstly is the peace deal your suggesting a longer term one or just the game minimum 10 turns.

Second, there is the new issue of the doomed galley and its cargo you have in the bay of aloha. My team (the few that are left anyway) wouldn't exactly be pleased to let it go unharmed. The only two way this could be sloved is they die their natural death or a ransom is paid to let them go (which would depend on the answer to the first question).

Cant we attack with the 2 frigates and escape?
Well, as I noted in my turn report, the odds were 32% on attacking. We probably could have broken out, but then the Galleon would have just been sunk the next turn by Aloha's other 2 Frigates. Instead, I tried to bait Aloha's Frigates with a much juicer target (our Redcoats). Judging from this message, they opted to ignore the bait. :dunno: Of course, after one more turn, Aloha should have enough Frigates to just go ahead and sink all 3 of our boats anyway. So we can try and break out, if that is what the team wants to do, on the current turn.

I think there is a more important question, though. I posted all of this 8 days ago in my turn report. Why are we just now having this discussion? The implication is that nobody is bothering to read my turn reports. :dubious: We've had 8 days of complete silence on all of the issues affecting this game. Why now?

Turns out it's a mute point.

I got to thinking that Aloha's message didn't mention our Frigates, just the Galleon. So I just downloaded the save and had a look. Sure enough, Aloha sank the 2 Frigates last turn.

There was also another note from Epsilon in our mailbox. I gather that we still have not opened discussions with them for all of these techs that we need?

No I read it; I didnt think we had any options but Aloha's letter opened up said options. Im trying to follow and help out but really this game is an afterthought. For instance, I would have checked if there were 1 or 2 frigates in each tile blocking us (turn report doesnt say) but I cant open the darn save so that kind of takes away from discussion. Sorry C.

We have some real civ genius' on the team list and people who could give nice discussion. Really it would be nice if they could be involved. 75% of the people (other 25% I dont know who they are) on this team I value their opinions highly so it would be great if Graham, Bede, Tubby, et al. showed back up.

Well, as I said, its a moot point now. Our Frigates are gone and Aloha isn't going to let us upgrade the game until we delete the cavs. Its a bit petty, I think, but there isn't a lot we can do about it. I was hoping that if someone besides me could open a save, then we might actually see more participation in this game. :crazyeye: As it stands, this game is pretty much dead. Even I'm having trouble keeping up interest.

But hey, I'm open to suggestions. I'd love nothing more than to tell Aloha where to shove it. They've been reluctant to trade with us the entire game. But without that patch, I don't see how we can cure our participation problems. Let alone attempt to get past team members to want to join again. Even that last guy (don't remember his name) left after he was unable to open the save. :shake: Its just so frustrating that the patch is being held hostage like this. My apologies to you all, as I shouldn't be taking it out on you.

Edit: My only other thought, if we truly do not wish to acquiesce to Aloha's terms, is to possibly call a UN vote amongst the teams. DaveMcW already started a thread for it, albeit an unofficial poll.

Yeah, I'd vote for that, certainly. Deleting units so that the game can be upgraded is so against the spirit of the game, imo.

OK, I've heard back from Robi D. Evidently, I misunderstood. They don't want us to delete the units, they want to sink the ship and get the xp as well.

Robi D said:
Ok the 15 turns is fine by us, we can leave at that for now and discuss any other deals after the patch.. We can upgrade to the new patch after this turn is finished then and hopefully get a few more people interested all around otherwise the game is doomed.

We need to decide how bad we want to keep these cavs. And if it is worth foregoing the patch to keep them. Our Galleon is trapped by their Frigates, so I'm not really sure if they can actually be saved via any in-game actions.

I guess we could offload the cavs, out of reach of their Cossacks, and wait the 1 turn for the peace treaty. But then that sort of trickery really isn't within the spirit of the game.

We could still call the UN vote ... but even if we win, we won't have a peace treaty and we will lose the cavs anyway. Which begs the question, why bother with the peace treaty? :dunno: Especially if Epsilon is willing to commit troops.

There's probably more options that I haven't thought of ... How do we want to proceed?

Sure offload them. THEY are the ones that want to whack a unit and patch, kind of holding us over the coals there, ya know?

Honestly, I don't think it is right. And besides, why would they honor the deal? My guess is they will refuse to upgrade until their Cossacks have killed our Cavalry. :dunno: And then if we do want to do a deal in the future, all we've done is made sure they won't trust us.
