Many Leaders Game 5 - One City Challenge

Just some quick analysis, as there's not too much to report on yet. No fancy graph yet.

Comments in spoilers for those who haven't started yet.

Spoiler :

I suppose the main difference in the games is the starting position (6 different spots in 13 games so far. The most popular by far is settling on the wine. For all those settling here (including me) don't open the spoiler unless you want to be depressed. ;)

Spoiler :
The good news is that when the city goes legendary it will have iron, horses and elephants in the cultural borders. The bad news is that until then we have none.

Swiss Pauli's spot is intruiging as it will have rapid growth but is limited to useful tiles in the long term by being by the ocean.

mice though gets the award for the most intriguing spot to settle. I'm not sure what was going on there

Anyway, interesting to see how the games develop and how everyone undertakes their military endeavours.

@ Oz

Spoiler :
don't you pick up the phants and horses 1 before legendary, which is 5000 i think. it looks like i'm in the same position for the iron.

makes you wonder if trying to get a great artist for a 4000 culture boost could be helpful.....mmmm

I wonder what the graph will look like

Looking forward to see interesting games here - I think it was a great idea of yours Oz to start an OCC MLG

Oops I only played 40 turns :wallbash:, I'll have to play the other 10 tonight.

Spoiler :
Looking at the other games as I'm 80% qualified especially how I've settled already.
Oz stole my idea of the CS slingshot :p

I wonder what the graph will look like

Looking forward to see interesting games here - I think it was a great idea of yours Oz to start an OCC MLG

Agreed. I forget, how are we going to conduct the graph?

Also i'm pretty dissapointed the only thing i appeared on the graph is "worst army" lol.

Also i'm pretty dissapointed the only thing i appeared on the graph is "worst army" lol.

Me too. I got used to my clean sweep on the stats
I am part of one of the two manys, so it can't be that bad :D

Turnset 2
Spoiler :
First of all, I decided to take a gamble.... GW was not built and the Mids looked as a locked win. So I decided to give a try on it ( 8 turns ) and got my 1st wonder... many more will come:
Spoiler :

Soon finished a very important tech for a OCC:
Spoiler :

And met the last of the members of our foe community:
Spoiler :

Decided to OB everyone in this turn

Some more turns and got the big pointy and rocky prize:
Spoiler :

Changed civics ASAP:
Spoiler :

The OBs had a clear effect ( Monty was spamming missionaries... for a moment I wondered if Izzy's has possessed him )
Spoiler :

Some turns later I got CoL...didn't revolted to Caste ( will wait for CS ).
Spoiler :

Research set on Maths.

Got a Spy as first GP  Oh well... settled him
Spoiler :

Some more turns and my goal is acheived:
Spoiler :

( Must write something in the Strategy forum about the return of the CS slingshot, just to be flammed as a hamburger  ).

Changed civics ASAP
Spoiler :

And in the last turns of the game I got the kind of good luck that makes people to :wallbash:
Spoiler :

If only I had metals nearby.... :gripe:

Thoughts for the future:

I have 2 options here: try to buy a metal to someone and build some super-duper CR Cover Shock axes and bang a head or two ( How I would like to have a single cooper mine nearby ATM  ) or continue my Ind route and pile wonders in my backyard. For having enough peace for that I just need to throw a bone to monty and watch the show

Spoiler :
I built the Pyramids on T58. I immediately revolted to Representation to allow Stalingrad to grow.

Then, some rather empty turns before I started the Oracle to receive a Mathematicized forest chop. One turn before the Oracle would complete, I switched over to the Hanging Gardens, which would time perfectly with with Oracle, CoL and the CS Slingshot. I thought HG was important for the health and because it would get me that all-coveted early GE for the Great Library.

Here is my MMed Stalingrad at T100:

Stalingrad: Pyramids, Library, Archer, Monument, Archer, Aqueduct, Oracle (unfinished), Hanging Gardens (unfinished)
Research: Pottery, Mathematics, Polytheism, Priesthood, Code of Laws (unfinished)

EDIT: I think I forgot to re-save at 2000BC when I renamed Moscow... oh well

Peter of Russia - Set 2:
Spoiler :

Summary:
Spoiler :

Constructed a CS slingshot and built the pyramids.
Have had a GS - who bulbed mathematics. And a Gspy who was settled - this is currently giving me enough espionage to see what people are researching - however that won't last too long.
Had really spawny luck getting a gem pop - cannot complain about that.
Have basically no military - it consists of a single warrior and the great wall.

The goal for my next set is to correct that military problem before someone wipes me out. I will research IW - know it's not in reach, but will feel cheaty if I don't. Then it shall be archery and a beeline for feudalism.
Hopefully I will get a great prophet next (67%) and can settle him.
I intend to build the GL and Globe in the near future. Possibly Angkor Watt if things pan out correctly and I can bulb Philosophy.

With hindsight, I wish I'd researched archery and built a barracks and 3-4 archers instead of the GW. But what can ya do!

Moscow Inside and out:
Spoiler :

Full version:
Spoiler :

I start off by MMing for a little growth. The fur will be connected as the city grows now.

IBT - apparantly I am the 3rd most cultured! :)

1800BC - The furs are connected.

1760BC - Writing > Mysticism. Switch from Pyramids to a library. Sign OB with everyone.

1640BC - Mysticism > Meditation.

1600BC - have a stroke of extremely good luck:

Makes up for every bad hut so far!

1520BC - finish the library. Hire 2 scientists. MM for max science. Continue with the pyramids. Finish connecting the horses.

1480BC - Meditation > Priesthood.

1440BC - pop a great spy. Settled in Moscow.

1400BC - Priesthood > CoL. Switch to Oracle. Fire one GS temporarily to get Moscow to grow and take advantage of the gems faster.

1320BC - the scientist is rehired as Moscow grows to size 7.

975BC - Gilgamesh asks for a cancellation of deals with Aoska - say yes = they're at religious loggerheads and Gilgamesh is closer. My precious 13xp scout survives a close encounter with a barb warrior.

950BC - Louis Pasteur (Great Scientist) born in Moscow. Bulbs Mathematics. Workers move to chop a couple of forests. I fire the scientists and switch them to construction.

9Plan comes together

900BC - Code of Laws > Pottery. Found Confucianism. Oracle completes. Select Civil Service. Revolt to Caste System/Bureaucracy. Switch to a Confucian Temple.

825BC - Pottery > Aesthetics.

800BC - Temple > Continue Pyramids. Hire a priest. Switch for growth to Size 8.

700BC - Moscow > Size 8. MM for production.

625BC - Aesthetics > Drama.

425BC - Pyramids built. Revolt to representation. Set for Grannary.

375BC - Drama > Iron Working (Due in 4). Grannary > Theatre. MM for growth with some building power.

Infra/Civil infrastructure is going well. Civil Service, Pyramids, Globe theatre on the way. BUT...

And there's always a but, my military is a total joke. Just a single warrior. The GW is giving me barb immunity, but any AI could kill me as soon as look at me.

My goal for the next set is to keep rapidly teching while building a self defense force. If iron working is present it will be Iron units, else I shall make archery and then feudalism my priorities.

Abraham Lincoln and the Bureacration Proclamation.
Spoiler :
Four score and 7 turns ago our people set out to go where no-mads had gone before. 2 tiles South. There we would settle knowing full well that 3 floodplains would equal 1 unhealthy person therfore the 6 surrounding floodplains would equal 2 unhealthy people for eons to come. Corn would provide 2 points of healthiness with a granary and pigs 1 until refirgeration.
Abraham set a task for the sages challenging them to make Washington the most officious city in the world, but the sages were mystified, until 7 turns passed. Meditating on what they had just learnt the sages decided that there should be an official role given to the mystified/meditating type people so a priesthood was designed to be worn upon the heads of such people.
Sadly though, the designer of the priesthoods died failing to pass on his knowledge, but Abraham wise and seemingly full of prophetic visions devised a system where such knowledge was 'written' to be passed onto future generations. A grand idea. But sand only remained legible in calm and sunny weather therefore a more permanent medium was required for information to be scribed upon, and what is more permanent than stone.
After 240 years workers we're finally provided tools with which to change the face of the very earth.
But with each new solution a new problem was discovered, 1 man could only carry 1 stone tablet 1 tile in 40 years, (until 1000BC where it would only take 25 years) a more efficient mean of transport was needed. The townspeople were summoned and a great think-tank was organized and the question was posed "what is the fastest thing on earth?". Many answers were given but only 2 stood out. Reggie suggested that the fastest thing was a 100 dollar note dropped on a windy day, whilst Arthur said he dropped a cheese down a bank the other day and that went pretty fast.
The cheese won. (nobody had even heard of money yet anyhow). So the most world changing invention of man was discovered based upon the humble cheese and to honour this event a yearly race was held to see if anyone could in fact catch a cheese rolling down a hill.
Abraham was pleased. His citizens were competent a knowledgeable but one thing troubled Abraham, he should have researched pottery earlier to give a discount on the research of writing. It did not matter though his nation was fast becoming the most Bureaucratic city-state in the world.

Spoiler :
Well the plan for this set is quite simple, CS slingshot in about 10 turns, slip in Pyramids and get started on Greal Library

After Mathematics, I want to research Alphabet to start backfilling the tech tree.

Well CS slingshot comes a bit later as I MMed a bit to get the city up to size 6.

Civil Service before fishing :goodjob: . I double swap civics to get slavery and bureaucracy.

The good times keep rolling.

Alphabet comes in. There's a little bit on the table.

I trade Poly to both Monty and Gilgamesh and get Animal Husbandry and Hunting back.

Remind me to buy a lottery ticket later.

Just to show something finally derailled my good luck  .

And that's up to turn 100. The lack of industriousness is telling as these wonders take time. Pyramids due in 6 and then Great Library before I can think about Globe, Hanging Gardens would be good too.

In any case I'm shooting for Rifling (from Liberalism) just 11 techs away.

Surviving on one archer and two warriors, so I need to get some more archers (and a barracks). I started researching Machinery for crossbows and then realised I need iron (will get iron, horses and jumbos in 120 turns now :goodjob:) but will finish and then go paper, education, printing press. Hopefully trade for Construction and build some Hwachas.

Research: Mathematics, Civil Service (Oracle), Alphabet, Hunting (trade), Animal Husbandry (trade), Masonry, Aesthetics, Archery (trade), Iron Working (trade), Metal Casing, Literature, Currency, Drama, Monarchy (trade), Machinery (not finished)

Spoiler :
I paused for reflection at this point: in the quick test game I played, I managed to take out Toku with a (rather prolonged) Gallics rush, so I wanted to try that tactic here. However, I had copper in the BFC and Agg AI was off, so I chickened out  What swayed me in the end was everyone else turtling, and the fact that Greyfox selected Lizzy, so it looks like everyone is going for a Rifles beeline and Drafting frenzy. If you can't beat 'em...

In that case, let's be ultra-dull and go for a CS Sling. I trained a few archers to fogbust and take out wandering barb warriors before starting the Oracle, and slipped in a Library as well to speed the research through Maths and CoL. My scout got eaten fairly early in the set, so my map knowledge is pretty poor. Opened borders with all AIs on discovery of Writing, though Jewish Monty persuaded me to close with Buddhist Asoka.

Photo-news:

The Confu missionary was sent to Gilga's capital and succeeded in converting him to Confucianism, which I hope will estrange him from the other AI. I took Monarchy (for the wines) then Sailing, whilst working on ToA. Not a wonder I normally bother with, but I felt the CS Sling made me too late for Great Lighthouse (wrongly perhaps), and I fancy the Priest/Merchant points as I plan on settling my G-Men (and no AI has Marble).

A pleasant event:

My empire:

Sorry chaps, I've got to jump out of play. You can tell from my start I wasn't focused enough.

This means Shaka/Cabledawg's in doesnt it?

Sorry Oz . I've got too much on.

Augustus - 375 BC
Spoiler :

As stupid Augustus continues his adventure to dominate the world with warriors, he is gifted with a good news from the gods

Border expands on turn 54 netting Rome the iron, ivory, pigs and sheep.

Turn 59 gave us iron. What to do with it?

Learned a few techs along the way to knock heads with Gilgamesh

When a small stack has finally made it's way to Gilgamesh's border ready to be the first to declare war on someone, Ragnar beat me to it.

But that did not deter me from declaring the very next turn

Shaka...Round 2--->375BC

Spoiler :

I just learned that the great Khan, Shaka had a National Anthem. To really honor him, I request the readers click on the link below in a seperate window while reading the report. It will really give the report authenticity.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9LuS4kf29I

We left off 1 turn from Masonry and 14 turns from a Great Scientist. We researched Masonry, Mathmatics, Poly...then built an academy.

Worked on Pyramids till I could time Oracle with COL.
Notice anything different from the above screenshot?

COL...Oracle...Fishing as my free tech

Went into Beuracracy and Slavery
Alphabet
Meditation (traded)
Temple...whipped , overflow into granary
Aquaduct

Hey Monty, you want a 138 Beaker to not kill me...you got it buddy.

Iron Working (traded)
Fishing (traded)
Metal Casting...Need a forge

Ragnar declares on Asoka and my missionary is heading to Gilly

Aesthetics in and Monty Declares on Asoka...can you say dogpile!

I let Asoka know that I want in on the dogpile too.

And this is where I stand at the end of this set

Im gonna try to get Hanging Gardens Next. Im not sure if Ill even try for any of the wonders in Aesthetis...Im not Industrious and dont have the resources, so the builds would take forever.

PS....Does anyone remember jamming out to that song?

Churchill, Round 2 (2000 BC - 375 BC): The building years

Spoiler :

My goals for this set:

  • build the Pyramids
  • research up to Priesthood to unlock the Oracle
  • see what's possible for the free tech
  • open borders to Monty hoping for a Buddhism spread
  • explore more of the map

Right into the turnset I'm told that I'm the most powerful. Hilarious considered that my army consists of 2 warriors and an Archer...

After the Archer I start on the Pyramids.

OBed Monty after Writing came in.

Found Asoka in the north.

After some MMing and 2 forest chops...

I then revolted to Representation and Slavery. As for events I'm less lucky than Ozzy...

Damn, with an impressive 0 gold in the treasury you can't even consider other options...My first Great Person was the Great Spy from the Wall. I settled him.

Asoka sure has a nice capital too...

After the Pyramids I had worked on getting the Oracle in place. Whipped it for 3 pop...

As free tech I chose...

My Empire:

I'm overall pleased with my play so far. I'm sure I could have pulled off the CS sling too in that game if I had bent my tech path on that goal solely. Of course the 18 turns spent on Iron Working and 6 on the Wheel put the sling out of reach as I would have had roughly 40 turns of research to go yet for CoL and Math. I then decided to go for the 2nd best option. Still I managed to get a quarter CS sling (the 25% production bonus from the earlier Forge ;) ). Yet I could bite my a$$ that I opted for the early rush - my efforts put my out of reach of the CS sling and only made clear for all others that IW is a useless tech in this game early on and the more worth in pursuing other paths...

In the next set I'll finish CoL, hopefully founding Confusedness. Diplomatically I plan on nuzzling up to Monty and therefore Gilgamesh will be the target later. I'll head for Literature => Drama ASAP too.

Techs researched: The Wheel, Writing, Mysticism, Polytheism, Priesthood, Pottery, Metal Casting (Oracle free tech), CoL (currently researching)

Imhotep
