fcNES: Gods and Despots

I clearly said to expand south.... perhaps my generals misunderstood.

*runs off to behead my generals*

Hey fc, how come ive only got one new city when that purple country in the middle east has 7 :O. I was meant to get Castille and Adorra la Vella where Andorra is lol.

I'm no expert, but I think Europe had a much smaller population density than the Middle East at this time. Wait for things like "salination" (I honestly don't know when) and "agricultural revolutions" to take effect, and things will shift around.

Besides, rapid expansion is not necessarily a good thing. Things will get messy for any and all empires that rise quickly without a very good plan of keeping stability. Falling empires are fun because they're true.

Imma writing the last bits of the update now. I only have 1:10 left in my personal deadline of getting the update up.

Im confused, where is the update?

So what areeveryone duscussing/moaning about?

I hope Fc hasn't killed this...

#fingers crossed you are right

Update 2 - Early Empires
2000 BC - 1900 BC

Main Events/Overview

Mesopotamia
When several hundreds of war-weary, bloodthirsty Abalonian soldiers drive spears through your bodyguards' heads as you lay trapped in a corner of your little palace or chief's hut, there is really little difficulty in picking between suffering the same gruesome fate or swearing an oath of loyalty to the Abalonian king. This story rang true for several leaders west of the Euphrates as the Abalonian high lords' ambitions brought the country into several wars of expansion that ultimately expanded its borders to unprecedented heights. To the east, the soldiers found themselves useless as several chiefs knelt down before the Abalonian king and high lords in fear or in pragmatism.

(Abalonia: -4 infantry regiments, +3 banked wealth, +1 industry)

While Abalonian soldiers raped and pillaged other states' women and towns (respectively), the Heavenly Empires' soldiers were raping and pillaging their own women and towns (respectively). With the assassination/death of natural causes of the God-King Deus Fëanor Primus (who proclaimed his immortality a few days prior at the same time lacking a successor), many peope were disillusioned and detached themselves from the Babylonian center of power.

The Babylonian military order collapsed, and several power-hungry (but not necessarily powerful) generals and governors plunged the state into a bloody civil war. Now the Palace of Babylon lies empty, but the priests there have unanimously proclaimed the arrival of a new God-King: Only time can tell if their prophecy is correct, but in the mean time several Heavenly Empire city-states will mercilessly stab and slice one another until the powr vacuum has been filled or their people become tired of war.

(The Heavenly Empire: -political cohesion, in the brink of annihilation!)

The Urartu continue expanding northwards, creating a tributary state of Urartu warrior-aristocrats, Urartu colonists, and a small native minority (mainly because of all the mangle-happy Urartu charioteers) to the east of the Black Sea. Upon meeting the Scythians there, tensions rose as the Scythians generally think that everyone is their little puppy to kick while the Urartu just happened to be part of "everyone:" The initially-spectacular-but-now-are-really-just-boring skirmishes where horsemen and charioteers chased one another in compete circles amount to very little, and now the area is still highly-disputed territory.

(Urartu: -2 infantry regiments, +1 industry)

Eastern Europe
Speaking of the Scythians, they expanded their borders, adding more to their collection of disgruntled tribute-paying tribes and towns. Of course, those who weren't disgruntled were angry, and their anger generally led to the taking up of arms. This taking up of arms led to fear, because people tend to get afraid when a guy on a horse totally skewers a bunch of ragtag protesters. Fear led to order, because otherwise the people are either mentally deficient or have a "suicidal gene" or a "collective death wish."

The Scythian capital of Kyzyl-Yar has begun developing into a place of tough commercce. A silver tongue is only second in importance to a a strong arm and a good band of merchant guards. The Scythian economy is much like any civilized state's, where "taxes" are replaced by "tributes" and "haggling" is replaced by "bloody street brawls."

(Scythians: -1 infantry regiment, +2 industry, +2 wealth)

The people of Ruskhan were a thorn to their side as much as ever, still refusing to yield to several Scythian warlords' unreasonable demands. You just have to wonder: Why are these Scythian warlords letting this foolishness pass by conquering elsewhere?

Northern Europe
In other news, the Angeln people have become more unified as a state after a big and well-planned raid in the reign of King Cynefrid. They have felt a sense of political unity when they stood up united, brought together in their collective want of more treasure. There is no cause greater or nobler than the pursuit of gold, as they say. Aside from that, their efforts to move away from their marshland homes have brought them several a rather insignificant number of homes along the shores of Sweden and Norway.

The Angeln's targets, the Celts, initially suffered in the raids and subsequent attacks by the treacherous Picts. However, the deadly combination of thick forests and stout-hearted Celts made sure that the Picts gained little to nothing. Those northerners were pushed to the shore, their bodies dumped sent to drift rotting in their boats as a reminder for future generations of Picts not to mess with the Celts. Of course, storms did take the bodies into the depths in a matter of weeks, so the Picts can be as foolhardy as they want.

(Anglen, Celts, Picts: details below)

More and more warlords in the general area begin getting that urge to be more than petty little barbs and have created a new generation of warrior-nobility. Several tribes have expanded their influence in the Germanic and Gallic forests, some having Angeln roots while others having a more Celtic demeanor. Wars of extermination – the kind that people can only begin with the absence of both the concept of "humanitarianism" and an annoying free and unbribed media – and raping sprees/intermarriage have erupted in several isolated areas, starting the slow solidification of racial and cultural identities in northern Europe.

Mediterranean
Italy was mostly peaceful: Rome and Remuslo still harass one another with their blood oaths against one another, of their fathers' betrayals of one another. Remuslo was consolidating its hold of its provinces, handling rebellions and separatists with force, while Rome moved south against the insignificant city-states there to expand its dominion and power-base.

(Rome: -3 infantry regiments)

Meanwhile, Liguria was busy financing successful colonizations of Corsica and Sardinia as the two other Italian states were ravaging each other like a pair of deep-fried chicken in a cockfight. The creation of settlements (and trading and military bases as collateral) there only served to further solidify their hold on Mediterranean markets. "Ligurian" (or whatever the local equivalent of their name is) is quickly becoming synonymous to "merchant" in among the various states and peoples of the Mediterranean.

(Liguria: +1 industry)

The Egyptians have begun moving east into ***the Middle East***. The Egyptian leader must now decide if the tides of his fate as godlike Pharaoh carry him into conquest or think otherwise. The Israelites are still weak, but their growing influence by means of their powerful religion is a threat to the balance of power.

Of the Israelites: they had established itself as a firmly theocratic state with a biased meritocratic outlook. The Hebrew people have spread their one true faith and imposed their own brand of culture to several of the neighboring peoples and have settled them down by means of church buildings and institutions (including educational and bureaucratic ones). However, the monetary strain of the fiscal demands of the state led to some discontent among the still-small mercantile caste and several Ligurians.

(Israel: financial trouble that might do something bad)

On the other side of the sea-lake, the Zaratians begin centralizing their industry. They have gathered several craftsmen from across the Empire to re-school them in their arts in the capital. This, of course, insults the various craftsmen, but the acceleration of innovations and idea-generation by having so many men of various and similar skills in one place is a good plus to balance out the part about the insulting.

The Zaratian armies also increase in size with warriors who fight for honor and loot and not much else (they're not professional, but so are many ancient-era warriors), perhaps in response to the Kingdom of Aragon to the north. The rival kingdom in Iberia has taken on a policy of aggressive expansion against their less civilized neighbors, and now have with them several new oath-sayers and loyal and/or fearful nobles and lords under their thumb.

(Zaratia: +1 industry growth; Aragon: -1 infantry regiment)

Africa/Asia
The D'mt have successfully concluded an extensive campaign north and northwest. They are now the proud owner of an empire to rival even that of the Egyptians' and the Abalonians. Using armies of slaves to handle logistics operations and construction of forts and camps and such, the D'mt soldiers were free to win many a battle and to enslave more people. The back-breaking labor the slaves have been through to win such large swathes of land will be forgotten, but slavery shall never die! Long live slavery! Huzzah!

(D'mt: +2 industry, -4 infantry divisions)

The empires of Asia there have proved themselves to be very expansive, though the terrain and general lack of political unity there meant that they took relatively little steps. In Indochina, the Kh'mer have begun developing their cities (a form expansion...somehow). In Japan, the Empire of the Rising Sun has taken hold of the entire island of Kyushu: Now its inhabitants answer to the Empress and her aggressive whims.

The people subdued by these two empires, used to living peacefully in their little settlements, are now facing great changes in their ways of life: Goodbye, days of simple living, hello probably dangerous plots contrived by superiors.

(Kh'mer: +1 industry; Rising Sun: -2 infantry regiments)

The Americas
Of course, the Americans are making progress as well, sort of. Both American nations expanded north, and they are both American. Hmmm. Well, apparently, the Mayans are under threat from the darkness, and the Mayan warriors protect the people from the darkness. Whatever form of political -ism this is, I don't know, but it has worked to the Mayans' favor when they decided on invading the tribes to the north. The Mayan people now feel safer and they have moral high ground even though they were aggressors because they were fighting "darkness."

They also built a temple to Gukumatz, The Feathered Serpentine Creator God, which is good. They improved their farming techniques, which is also good. Maybe someday the Tikal will rise into prominence as a huge Empire, but for now they have to find their roots (OOC: Creator God and crops and roots -- get it? Nevermind) and get a good grip on Mesoamerica.

(Tikal: financial strain that's not as bad as Israel's, +1 industry, -2 infantry regiments)

The Missouri nation is facing quite a few problems now. With the lack of any real trade and any real directive (or reason) for settling in, the tribes comprising the confederacy are slowly moving away from the quasi-central power. Their conquests have proven futile, "conquering" the Amerindian people who are still basic nomadic hunter-gatherers who are, y'know, nomadic. The concept of territory becomes a lot less of an issue that way, let me tell you that.

(Missouri: -1 infantry regiment)

Military Events/Details

The big Anglen raid was an organized foray into Celtic shores with the sole purpose of expanding their coffers. They made landfall on several outlying Celtic villages in the north in the first few months, taking whatever they can from granaries and goldsmiths' shops. The Celtic shore-forts, made of sturdy timber and solid rock, were taken and served as a very temporary base of operations as they continued raiding.

In the weeks after the grand raiding had begun, however, the Celts had mounted a counter-offensive of several warriors and warlords under the direction of King Leffe and his son, Prince Leffe Leffeson. Soon enough, the raiders were faced with screaming Celts of equal numbers who knew the land and people better.

Among the thieves' bodies, the Celts found several hundreds of Picts. In fact, almost half of all the raiders were Picts. This has put a strain on the relationship between the Picts and the Celts, leading to a decrease and trade and general friendliness between the two. "Only a bloody war of extermination can bring peace now," says political analysts on both sides, noting that Great Britian will most likely follow the same trends as mainland Europe.

(Angeln: -1 infantry regiment, -4 warships, +1 banked wealth; Celts: -1 wealth, -1 infantry regiment, +4 warships; Picts: -1 wealth, -2 infantry regiments)

Other Events/Mostly Punsihments

The increasing demand for timber in Jutland and utter disregard for their nature's wrath has led to a boom in manufacturing and (as a nifty bonus) farmlands. The Angeln people are finding themselves busy with chopping and crafting and shipbuilding as the druids are prostesting loudly as ever.

(Angelns: +1 industry, +angry druids)

The Bedouins face stagnation as they content themselves with what meager influence they held in the Arabic peninsula. The leaders have been indecisive and unambitious. To sum up the performance of the Bedouin leadership, it has been weak, effeminate, and ineffectual.

(Bedouins: -1 wealth growth, -influence)

The Urartu nobles are becoming quite exploitative of their people. They have set up unofficial "civil protection" rackets and official "civil protection" rackets. Aside from that, they have even imposed all kinds of taxes, from a "wealth tax" to various property taxes and even a "tramp tax" for people without property. Corruption flourishes as their leaders fail or refuse to keep a firm grip on the problem

(Urartu: -2 wealth growth, +bureaucracy, +corruption)

The Ruskhan people are united by faith but their zeal has cost them many of the hard-working non-believers in their society. Local sects on the interpretation of the teachings of the founders of the Cult of Malik Nous have risen and internal bickering followed. The government, once wholeheartedly supported by its people, must now choose one of several sects or suffer. The political climate has led to a few merchants leaving Kiev.

(Ruskhan: -1 wealth growth, -1 industry growth, -unity)

The Egyptians had several small rebellions out of religious differences and political ambition, the people live in fear of the D'mt, and there was a swarm of locust which ate a lot of their annual harvest. People blame the Pharaoh for his incompetence as a god and the system is slowly falling into decay.

(Egypt: -1 wealth, -3 industry growth, -happiness, -2 infantry divisions)

The Greeks have improved their infrastructure and are reaping the benefits. People from the north are coming in to see the sights and wonders of Athens and Corinth, "the home of the world's greatest minds" and "the great trading city with streets of gold" respectively.

(Greece: +1 wealth, +1 industry)

In Remuslo, several separatist factions in their newly acquired provinces had become problematic. Three whole regiments, under one too-ambitious general, rebelled and raised their swords against the government. The rebels based themselves in Vienna and held out for 30 years as an independent city-state. It wasn't until recently that the Remuslons have arrived with crushing force to defeat the rebel leader.

(Remuslo: -5 infantry regiments, -1 wealth growth)

OOC: The map is to come (with Wambiri and their stats). The number of negative events in "punishments" corresponds to the number of people who did not send orders. Sorry if it's a tad disorganized.

Edit: Map added, stats added, Wambiri added, a fix on Tikal stats (and corresponding addition in the update), reformatted the update to make it similar to the last one, set the deadline on 10:00pm (GMT+8), December 27, 2007, Thursday, and . That is all.

Nice update. I really like how you mix serious stuff with a humorous tone.

A little note- by 'Our People' in the orders, I was referring to Mayans in General, not just Tikal, and defending them from feared unknowns (of which Mayan mythology is rife). Thus, I'm uniting the Mayan people for defense.

But your interpretation works too, and has pretty much the same effect. :D

I need to write a story soon...

67 AC (AC = After Church)
King Solomon the Prophet dies 67 years after the establishment of the Church of Judah, at 83 years of age. He leaves three sons, and his heir is immediately enthroned as King Solomon II.

67 AC
Disgruntled workers, supported by Rabbis that have not been paid properly for many years, organize formal protests throughout Israel. King Solomon II does nothing to reverse the situation.

69 AC
King Solomon II, after many years of ignoring the needs of his nation, is executed by his youngest brother, Joshua, for treason. However, it is to late to save the family's power over Israel's government.

70 AC
Popularly elected officials take the place of King Joshua I's Advisory Council, now renamed the People's Representative Council. While still selected specifically from within the Church, these officials are closer to the needs of the people. Considering that the majority of the population is Jewish, their is little call for secular officials of any kind.

71 AC
The civil examination system is reformed, allowing for positions relating to the economic prowess of Israel to be occupied by officials not of the Church. This satisfies those in fear of further economic decline and shows the governments greater tolerance towards those not of the faith, although Church officials are always more likely to take these positions and, even more so, those of the Jewish faith are more likely than those who practice a different religion.

83 AC
King Joshua I dies, leaving no heirs. The youngest brother, the only one not to be a Rabbi, is enthroned as King Abraham III. The People's Representative Council uses this transmission of power to further mitigate the King's effects on the economy and law-making processes of Israel. However, King Abraham III was the commander of the Church's armed forces; he folds the loyalty of this group inextricably to the King and his position, appointing his second son, David, as the next commander of the Protectors.

85 AC
King Abraham III's first son, Sampson, is appointed to the People's Representative Council.

89 AC
King Abraham III dies in an exhibition of his fine swordsmanship. In his final breaths, he names David as the next King of Israel. Sampson opposes the decision, but is reminded rather quickly that he holds enough power from his position on the Council. David appoints his youngest son to Lord Commander of the Protectors.

103 AC
King David I dies of fever. He declares his third son, Lord Commander Aaron, as the next King of Israel. Tradition formalizes, as a law by the People's Representative Council mandates that the Lord Commander of the Protectors becomes the next King of Israel.

To: The Egyptian Empire, Babylon, Various Mesopatamian States, Urartu, and whatever remains of the Heavenly Empire
Two things to discuss: 1)Are you willing to sign an open trade agreement with Israel? 2) Are you willing to allow missionaries of the Church of Judah within your borders?

OOC: Nice Update! My spending did seem a little out of control, but I wasn't about to stop just because it would destroy my country's economic prospects! :)
A minor gripe, though: what happened to the other things I was building? I did spend an industry point on roads and new irrigation systems, if memory serves. Also, what happened to the First Temple?

On The Kingdom of Aragon

During the reign of King John II, Aragon looked set to descend into anarchy as Lady Isabella Velasco and Lord Diego Clavera, his brother and sister, each left the capital of Zaragoza to form their own, semi-autonomous states, Castille and Andorra.

This led to a period of distrust and panic during which, the King made several attempts to assasinate Isabella and Diego (worried that they were planning a government coup.) and just about everyone tried to assasinate the King. However, interestingly after John died of ''natural'' causes at age of 34 and his son, Cedric arose as King of Aragon. However, the first thing he did as king was disolve the King of Aragon's rulership over the provinces of Castille and Aragon. The cites of Zaragoza, Burgos and Andorra la Vella were now loosely connected city-states, united by culture, language and the senate.

The sentate was now made up of nobles and wealthy merchants from each state, all of which were flourishing during this age. The King or Queen of the state effectively ruled their provinces on their own and the land ruled by nobles was rapidly declining. However, the senate watched their decisons closely and had the right to stop a law being passed or stop a Monarch from doing certain things. For matters concerning the country as a whole (which was still generally referred to as Aragon), the monarchs had to discuss the matter at length and come to a joint decission in the senate. The joint will of the monarchs overuled the vote of the senate.

In conclusion, the second era was a period of great change in Aragon and now as the Joint Kingdoms of Aragon strive to expand a new era of great stability and wealth looks increasingly likely.
