From the air, I'd been watching a large but outdated AI fleet headed to my continent (14 galleons, 4 caravels, 30 land units), and set up a small blockade of destroyers. I was weak on land, and if the army was able to make landfall, I'd lose a couple cities.
Now, normally the AI is pretty handy maneuvering its units and getting them to shore the very turn they declare war. But Zara Yaqob suddenly realized that he needed to be an idiot, and threw his entire stack (including the laden galleons!!!) at one of my destroyers. +1 war victory for me!
Picture is the 28/10 experience destroyer that just ate Ethiopia's navy for breakfast![]()

It only depends on your tech level. If you research Iron Working, that's the only way I know of to get into the Clasical age. Means nothing except for city graphics(and worker if you're entering the modern era).
It's true that the eras of the game are triggered by certain techs, but not entirely true that they only affect city graphics.
Aside from those things, though, I don't think the eras have any other effects.
- Music (a negligible cosmetic effect like city graphics)
- Quests: As of BtS, eras act as deadlines for most of the game's quests. If you're pursuing one, it may be helpful to know which techs trigger the deadline era. Is there a list of those around somewhere?
- War weariness: As I understand it, the factor that calculates war weariness increases with each era--the idea being that more modern societies are less tolerant of war, especially long, costly ones.

I am quite sure that this is not right, unless i missed this part in the code. I do not know about a per era modifier either (but i am less sure at this one).I don't believe that is the case. War weariness uses the unit strength involved to calculate it. So it usually will increase with era, but it is not direct (or caused by a certain era).
