Welcome to the 14th edition of the Lonely Hearts Club for BTS. In the Lonely Hearts Club we explore strategies to cope with one of the most dreaded situations in Civ IV ( possibly the main reason for reloads after the military collapse one :p ): starting in isolation....

For the 14th game in BTS the choosed leader was Gilgamesh of the Sumerian:

I could start talking about RL Gilgamesh backround ( real nice story... stupid ending ( after travelling around the world to get to the mountain of the Gods to get immortality ,he lets the plant that would give him that to slip right between his fingers ) .And the guy that wrote shoud had study some algebra... having a God as the father and a half god mother makes him 3/4 of a god , not 2/3  ), but let's keep in game...

Gilga is not the average civ that we would think for this kind of chalenge: no strong eco trait , early UU..... but IMHO the UB makes for it. The creative trait also helps with the barb issues and pro gunpowder units are good draftees.... if you want to conquer the world

His UU.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0005.jpg

Vultures ( that oddly are not spearmen ( the picture Firaxis based in to make the unit shows a phalanx type group.... as the Civilopedia explicitely says :crazyeye: ) are a stronger axe (str 6 ) that has a decreased bonus against melee ( 25% ) . Personally I think that they are pretty brutal for a standart axe rush ( before the normal axes get in line ... and even after ). And they are pretty efficient barb killers as well, especially if you get into woodman promos ( especially the juicy III one ).... Of course that axerushing is not a option in isolation, but barb hunting ( and capturing some barb cities... archers can't stand a str 6 unit with FS ) can be handy...

His UB.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0004.jpg

The Ziggurat is courthouse that cames with Priesthood instead of Code of Laws ( accurately describing the central part that priest and temples had in the organization of the Summerian cities... but that is a entirely diferent issue ) ... this put it in the same category of UB than the Ikhanda and the Rathaus, the one of the enhaced maintenance cutters. technically the ziggurat doesn't cut maitenance more than a normal courthouse ,but as it arrives to the game far earlier, it allows to pass the invisible barrier of 4 cities far earlier.... and land is power. Alternatively, it points to a Oracle strat as well... and you don't need to research CoL with the usual hurry.

The start:
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0001.jpg

( P.S I'm using Blue Marble.... )
One of those all tree starts :gripe: And with 2 calendar resources in BFC :gripe: and sheep: :gripe: ... Oh well ,it has corn , running water, a suspicious hole in the woods ( i sense a metal there... ), sea ( or lake ) north of those desert tiles ( look closely... ) and another river to the NE ( it also shows in the screenie ,but it is far more noticeable with the yields turned on, because of the extra coins) . Could easily be worse.....

Again a small request ( not mandatory :p ) :

We ask the participants to do, if possible, a write-up with the victory save and a description of your game ( strategies, techs researched, wars,...). All the info should be in spoiler tags ( to not disturb other people's games ). If you want ( we would like to :p ) post reports at this moments of the game:

Checkpoint 1 - when we have explored the island and are aware of what resources it has. Its not so important when this is, but this is a time to discuss city sites etc. Don't look into a checkpoint 1 spoiler until you have reached this point yourself.

Checkpoint 2 - first contact - when we have met all the other AIs. At this point we can discuss our strategy to get to this point and our plans for dealing with them.

Checkpoint 3 - when we are committed to a victory condition (or at least think we are).

Checkpoint 4 - Victory (or defeat).

The last words are to wish good luck to all :goodjob: . And let the games begin!

Saves

Noble
Prince
Monarch
Emperor
Immortal
Deity

P.S We don't have any kind of problem with defeats and reruns. Just play and enjoy ;)

Sticking with Monarch, since I have yet to successfully win one of these on that level yet. I will play this one a while before switching back to the Gandhi one, although I really really want to do my own public 7-religion game on that one soon. I did notice that a few are still playing it though, so I wont spoil it for them with a wide-open thread. Its no problem to wait another week or so and play this one first, I put it off this long. I have not tried Gilgamesh yet, so I am looking forward to it. CRE is also one of my favorite traits, love those free border pops.

Given the start (:gripe:) and my lack of recent win on Emperor, getting back to Monarch for this one

Btw, r_rolo, we can switch places in PH-12 if it's ok with you. Sorry, my RL is heavy nowadays...

I finished my game on immortal  This is a very easy map. I got caught up so much in my game that I forgot to take screenshots at the intermediate points.

Spoiler :

I don't know if it really counts as an isolated start if your starting "island" has about 1/4 of the world's landmass  I basically rexed my island while taking only Christianity from theology (and AP). After that, I was forced into war because Mehmed attacked me. I took half his continent then took peace as AL was in and I wanted to concentrate on infra. Then Cyrus attacked me so I wiped him out. At this point, I decided to pursue military and wiped out Mehmed followed by Asoka and Toku before I hit domination.

The big continent was embroiled in lots of wars so they were very backwards. Brennus and Pacal fought once with Pacal losing his capital. Asoka and Toku fought 3 times and I later bribed them into one more fight.

All in all, this map was prettye asy because of the amount of land you start with. I could have just peacefully gone towards space if I had chosen.

My final score was around 70k, early 1900's. Not bad considering it was an isolated start.

@shyuhe

That was fast....
Spoiler :
The map is almost as it came from the map generator... I even gave some extra grassland to Brennus that had a really sucky start ( only had space for a decent city ) Besides that it is almost untouched....

You know how fractal is... sometimes it generates crazy maps ;)

I finished my game on immortal  This is a very easy map. I got caught up so much in my game that I forgot to take screenshots at the intermediate points.

Touché, exactly the same here, just kept pressing "end turn". This is all I have, but it should say more than enough tbh.

Ok, NO screen shots, as I dont' know how to load them except as an attachement.
Spoiler :

I've explored all the Island, rather late again, 900ad...but I"m isolated..

One early event that has made a HUGE DIFFERENCE.

about 1500BC, or so, I POPPED GOLD IN MY CAPITALS BFC...OMFG..

Trouble is, I didn't build the Great Libriary there, I built it in 2nd city...Oh well. Capital is going for Great Engineer wonders..lol

Settled the south first, went coastal, missed the Great Lighthouse...Ohwell..didn't build coastal city fast enough. Cities, one to grab fish/crabs, double fish/double silver, corn/crabs on east coast.

Wall Street will go where the 3 dye and 3 sugar are all encompassed by one city. Burnt a barb city on coast by pigs, even though they'd built a pasture.

Wonders; Great wall, Pyramids, Great Libriary, Parthenon, Sistine Chapel, Ankor wat (building), Hanging gardens...I'm a wonder pig...so sue me.

Victory, at this early stage, I'm thinking Cultural, even though I've founded no Religions as 6/7 are now gone...

For just something different, Cultural victory....why the #%%$ not...

Just spamming cities, teching Liberialism...Might side track to Nationalism/Taj Mahal...dunno...got Free Great Artist at Music, still sleeping...maybe a double golden age, even though I missed Mausoleom Of M...

Interesting map...but I'm ISOLATED....

ok I'm up to check point 2...lol
Spoiler :

Blah blah bloddy blah..
As I said I've met them all...6/6 ..so if I'm missing one, its eliminated.

Mechmed declared war on me, 1 turn from Rifling...took a city, and I teched rifling, took it back...damm idiot... No hope....

All the others..seem to have traded..I'm doing my usual effort, not trading Rifling..etc...

Most have Democracy...I"m teching it, and I"ll try for SoL...

Win...

As I said earlier, I'll try for Cultural...

P.S.

STUPID ME...thought Cultural was 5K  , not 50K...thought it was too easy...

Here I am read it
Spoiler :
OK I lost to a space race victoy.....dAMM but OSAKA...WAS just a monster in my game, oh yeah that and am i'm drunk...1 1/2 bottles of wine..but even so...........beaten badly..

he built many space ship parts, and I dont' remember even seeing them..ok..drunk/hitting enter....and another idot beat me to a Cultural victory...Pacal...Idiot No 3, Mechmed decared war, turn 1, couldn't take city, aso pillaged...

Ok drunk........but...played with a 1/2 ardsed attitude....not as good as I think I am......

But ASOKA WAS A MONSTER...at least 5 techs AHEAD of all others......damm girl:cry:

Checkpoint #1: Not going to read ANYONE else's spoilers until I finish the game, I need to break my bad habit of "peeking ahead".
Spoiler :
I think I have this one well in hand. I moved 1S and founded my cap on a plains instead of a grassland, thinking about future cottages. That gave me another food resource in my BFC as well as a couple hills. I should be able to have a strong Bureaucracy cap. That move cost me having Copper in my BFC, so my 2nd cite grabbed it, as well as the lone Floodplains in the southern "half" of my continent. After exploring the entire island, I can see a 2-stage plan for cities. Settle the South and South-East first, then move up and settle the Jungle after IW and Calendar. 3rd city went to the Corn, 2-silver, Marble area, and I went for my wonders. Skipped SH since I am CRE, got the GW in my 2nd city and Oracle in my first. Took MC and started Forges ASAP, as happiness is an issue, and the Silver nets me +2 with a forge. I am in the middle of the Mids, which I originally wasnt even going to chase this game, but since the AI built Stoney so late, I figured what the heck. I have a bunch of Forests outside my Capitols BFC to chop it out, another nice "edge" CRE gives you, access to that particular "resource" (forests outside BFC but still in Cultural Borders). I also researched CoL for Confu myself, and Maths for the chop-bonus and a sight on the Hanging Gardens (not as many optimal city sights in the north with fresh water, and all that jungle, HG will help me settle it much faster I think).

I originally planned to try another trade-route thing, I am really getting hooked on that strat, GLH + Colossus is so very strong on these maps, since we KNOW in advance we are going to have plenty of coastline available for city sites, but I dont know. I want to pump out libraries and ziggs ASAP so I can jack up my tech rate, so I may skip those wonders, and push for a different path instead. Havent really decided, will know more on Checkpoint #2. So far though, the AI seems sluggish, even for Monarch. Not a lot of Great People being born, Judaism came late, SH was later than normal, so maybe I can sneak in a couple key coastal trade wonders by popping GEs. Running an engineer specialist in all possible cities just for that purpose, and once I finish the Mids, if I get them, I will go with a hybrid, running as many specialists per city as possible while still having cottages for economic stability. More later, still kind of finishing up a couple other games.

Me too... not my fault ( there is something wrong with the easy upload )

I must be the only person that enjoys starting a Civ game in Isolation on my own Island :p

It makes it too easy to win when no one can attack me and I can build up my cities. Although on harder difficulty levels I need to remember to build a powerful Navy.

Like the English in RL on their little island, yet they became so powerful. and the Japanese ^^.

Gilgamesh would be a good leader for me, but I would need stone or marble, or both because he isnt Ibdustrious. Those early cuorthouses will mean that I can expand faster. But Creative and Protective are nice traits, however if you are on your own island with little fear of being attacked, Protective goes to waste.

I'll give this game a go on Prince.

Spoiler :
cool, it has Marlbe, but its really far away in tundra, so that will have to be my fourth city spot. This map looks pish easy for a culture win, but I'm not industrious so wish me luck ^^

My progress so far and the best City placements I found with red circles indicating where I'm going to put my next cites:

Spoiler :

gilg1.jpg

Some cities have a corner square or two of overlap, but they should still be very productive. Also one city will be built on the left peninsula from the capital, but that is my last priority location as it is surrounded by ocean.

Ok, I'm currently building the Ziggaraut in every city and will whip them A.S.A.P. The economy boost they will give at this stage will be immense!

I have oracle in my capital, and founded judaism.

Also, I have no need for garrisons in any of my cities as I have placed enough warriors over the map to keep 90%+ of the tiles visible so barbs cant pop ^^. When people get unhappy I hit the whip :p

I whipped a few of those Vultures as a barb popped out of a single unrevealed tile oops :p. I'm using a vulture in each city for defence and will wait for longbowmen.

This is a seriously good map for an easy win, but would be difficult above monarch.

I won on prince, my score was Rank 2, Hammurabi - 14168. Heres my write up and screenies:

Spoiler :

Firstly, I was going for a Cultural win. Asoka however was a right B1tch, he stole away with the tech race and secured all of the mid game religions and wonders, and had double my score when I met him! All I had was Pyramids, Oracle, Sistine Chapel in my capital, Hanging Gardens, Parthenon and Shwedagon Paya in city 2, and just the Statue of Zeus and hermitage in city three.

The only religion I had was Judaism, so I had to make do with just one cathedral in each city. I actually got divine favor and paper very early compared to my other techs, but both the University of Sankore and Spiral Minaret, and even my backup the Angor Wat had been stolen by the Indians! So my third city was looking gloom with just Statue of Zeus and nothing else untill the Hermitage national wonder. I was also beaten to the Mausoleum and Taj Mahal, but those arent too significant compared to loosing the economy boosters.

After Drama and once I was beaten to the wonders, I kept one or two Artist specialists in each of my three legendary cities throughout the game, and made sure they had a high chance of spawning great artists. After being beaten to Mausoleum, Spiral Minaret, University of Sankore, and Taj Mahal, I headed straight for Pacifism / Free Speech as fast as I could. I popped about 4 or 5 Great arists, I used two to culture boost cities 2 and 3 with a great work, and added two of them as super specialists to city 3 to make up for the lack of wonders. I mainly focused on building up my cities with heavy whipping, and colonised the Island. I had a medium defence - 3 Archers upgraded to longbowmen plus two musketmen per city, my early game flood of Vultures, and three Triremes. I dedicated two cities to supplying my defences and stocked my cities up in case I got attacked.

My usual build Queue for buildings in my cities was; Zigauraut > Jewish Temple > Granary > library > Forge > Jewish Monastery > Theatre > Marketplace > university > Observatory > Grocer > Bank. I got my Cathedrals put up as quickly as I could, putting them in order from my lowest culture city to the highest. Once these buildings had been completed, or I was waiting for the relevant tech for the next buildings, I either put out some more military units or dedicated each non - legendary completed city to Wealth, and the legendary cities to culture. However, due to not having any contacts and going for the culture techs in the middle ages first, my Economy crashed and I had to plod along with 30% Science and 10% Culture untill I got marketplaces. This is what put me at a major setback to the Indians and everyone else, so I gave up on the race and focused on building and using wealth / culture / Great Aritist pops to fuel my culture. Once my cities were all fully built up from heavy whipping, I had around 100 turns left to Victory in each legendary city. I swiched from slavery to caste system, and halted all city growth. My legendary cities stocked up on as many artists as they could hold with a stagnat growth, and produced culture, while my other cities stocked up on as many merchants as possible producing wealth. I hit my culture slider to 100% and dropped any Excess gold I was making by switching 3-4 cities to research. I fortified all my units and workers and kept pressing enter ^^.

The year I won was quite late due to my middle age economy crash since I never research currency as I trade it of the AI for a culture tech once I'm comfortably ahead on the wonders. But I kind of didnt realise that I wouldnt be be able to trade for currency in this game due to no contacts! So I was setback by a large margin, and every other civ was lightyears ahead on the science race, plus only having founded one religion and being beaten to the Spiral Mineret and Uni of Sankore, my economy was terrible. The winning year was 1944, I was still researching Radio and the tech and wonder hog Asoka had compleded the Apollo Program 25 turns prior to my victory. He had one super city (Delhi) with like every single wonder past the renaisance period, and Spiral Minaret was in Bombay. I need to play a duel map on warlord with Asoka now and pwn his evil butt for compensation!

Anyway, thats how I won, and this is the first time Ive ever had such a severe setback to my culture wins. When I normally play, I use the Big and Small map and try to get my own Island, but the islands and continents on big and small are very close together so you usually make contact early on from AI galleys and scouts.

Heres my Victory pic and Score:

A very late cultural win, but a good score XD.

I suspected of something like it....

I have ( IIRC ) all the files in backup, so it should not be a big problem... but it will be a PITA to reupload all of the stuff :gripe:
