ALC Game 22: Arabs/Saladin

Snaaty has written a great guide no doubt, but it's far from the only way to make success on the higher/highest level. I doubt he plays every game like that himself, because it's not a superior strategy, it's as the above poster says, a general strategy that works most of the time. Rushing works on deity too, it's not necessarily the best move to expand peacefully and tech to rifling.

On a related note, I may be giving the Great Library a miss in this game despite the presence of marble.
There are just too many other tech priorities (Monarchy, Math, Construction, Currency, Code of Laws, Calendar);

I've always maintained that when you move up a difficulty level you have to give up a few of the mini-victories
you're used to winning, like early wonders. It appears as though founding an early religion may have to join that list.

You are making progress, fine.

But keep also the basic prinziples in Civ in mind, like Slaze stated.
Rush to the good sites, then, when there are no good sites left, go and take :hammer: them.
(more often than not) In that order.

Yikes! The latest ALC not on page one! :eek: Is the world about to end?

(Or is the general activity of this forum lately simply groovy? :))

It is telling that it is brought back on page one by a metacomment rather than a comment...

I like real life. It gives me something do when I need a break from Civ. :)

kill the heathen!

Okay, I got my butt handed to me by Louis. He teched so far ahead of me it was ridiculous. I had Swordsmen facing off against Crossbowmen. Not pretty. :mad:

I'm abandoning this particular attempt at a Saladin game. I think you guys were right, my two weeks away from Civ while I waited for the new computer had me playing sloppy.

Watch for Saladin Take 2, coming soon.

Sisiutil:

You do these things on emperor, right? I'll probably start shadowing them, although I'll honor your request not to post spoilers. From what i hear the jump to emperor is among the hardest, so I expect these to help me quite a bit now!

Wow ... no way! :sad:

Watch for Saladin Take 2, coming soon.

I'll keep my eyes peeled. :scan:

@Sisiutil

I'm amazed you can keep your focus on long ALCs even when you can play regularly :goodjob:

Looking forward to more Saladin soon.

Next game, let's try founding Islam with Divine Right instead of Polytheism.

And I'm in favor of moving the settler into a Desert/Mountain Peak area. :)

Sorry to hear about the failed attempt, but you're not the only one who got beat up but Louis. I shadowed this game for a while and played along similar lines except I didn't go after an early religion.
Spoiler :
Anyway, in short, I rexed out to 6 cities by 1AD but soon quit when I realised just how powerful Louis was. He had 13 or 14 cities by that stage (including a few barb ones he captured), and a substantial tech lead. We were all the same religion and pleased with each other, so there was not really any room to move diplomatically to start wars and the like. I saw no real possibility of a win, and decided to just see how the official attempt panned out. Not much better by the sounds... :lol: I'd be curious to know if anyone else shadowed this with better luck.

Well it seems that Louis is once again a terrible AI. One of the worst to me...

Phew. In my shadow game I grew to occupy all the decent city spots, then having high production and not a lot of other options, geared up for war. I decalred war on Louis without having the ability to bribe Suleiman, and the next turn, although pleased with me, he joined up. I've yet to play ahead any farther since it's such a headache to withdraw your Stack of Death and try to defend undefended cities on another part of the border.

Louis's graphics and animations make him a particularly annoying leader to lose to.
