The Space Race

Very Interesting game, Will follow it for sure!

Welcome to Stories and Tales! Glad to have another reader.

Very exciting update. You update every day or two, it seems. Much faster than any other Quintillian thread I've been on!

Recently it's been every day or two (apparently). But it really varies a lot. Sometimes it'll be two weeks if I'm especially busy or am playing a game other than my story game (Civ or otherwise), other times it'll average once a day for about a week (during parts of breaks from school). Right now Civ = awesome, and another update will be coming soon for sure, but exams are coming up in a few weeks and before too long I'll be forced to put exams as priority one :(. Of course after that there's summer, no doubt the best time of the year.

Hi Quintillus. Very interesting story. I find your stories to be very educational when it comes to improving CIVIII performance and knowledge. I am also reading your world conquest story. I just wanted to rasie a question in regards to a point made earlier in this thread:

(remembering that lakes of size 21 and larger require a Harbor for 2 food)

I just wondered where you learned this from as it is relevant to mod users/designers. In a discussion in another thread players had found that on small lakes it is sometimes not possible to build harbors at all. Different explanations were postulated but none seemed definitive so I was wondering what your source of info on lakes was.

Cheers

I think that if there is a square that is not touching any land, then you can build a harbor.

There was some thread on this forum that isn't agreeing to come up on the Search feature where someone had tested this. It's probably around Page 9 of the Civ3 General Discussions by now; it's been several months at least.

For the next couple weeks I'm going to be extra-busy thanks to projects, tests, exams, finals, readings, and the necessity to sleep. So whether I'll be able to get an update up anytime soon (or be on CFC for a couple weeks) is questionable at best. :(

On the plus side, once all that has subsided (which may be up to three weeks from now), I should have a decent amount of free time almost every day.

edit: I guess the necessity of sleep will not subside after three weeks :D. But even with that consideration I'll have some free time each day starting three weeks from now.

Space race?ive never seen a space race victory in stories and tales ever!So this may be a first. good job, crush those dutch! hehe... use LOADS of cavalry,it will help, also go for something retro, bring some hwacha's to help you own those cities...privateers never hurt either to take out those ships going to colonize the damn 1 square islands but ure pretty close to marines anyways

Good news! I'm done with exams and have free time again! It'll be until the latter half of this week before I'm back at home and will be checking CFC regularly, but in the day before I hit the road for vacation I ought to be able to get in an update. It won't be tonight - friends come first on the last day before most of them move out - but I was able to put together a summary of recent events so everyone can jump right into the next update without rereading first.

Summary of Recent Events:

We have been at war with the Netherlands for 95 years. Much of the battle has been at sea, but we have finally gone on the offensive at Middelburg, where the battle is thus far a statlemate.

The Maya declared war on us in 1235. We brought in the Aztecs, Arabs, and Iroquois against them and have took the first city from them, Tikal, last turn with a Warrior. The Maya have been doing well otherwise, however, taking Malinalco from the Aztecs to unite their empire in the south.

The Ottomans declared war on us in 1252. No combat with them has occured yet.\

Technologically, we have researched Steam Power and Medicine thus far in the Industrial Age, and lack only Free Artistry from previous ages.

We completed Newton's University and Smith's Trading Company five years ago, in what will no doubt be recorded as one of the greatest years of our current Golden Age.

And a detailed world map. This comes from a saved game file in 1290 AD - the current year, but before I captured Tikal. Warning: Very large size (0.99 MB) and very large dimensions (2548x2082).

Spoiler 2548x2082 (0.99 MB) :

1292 AD -
1292_War_with_England.png

Treacherous treason! To sign a Right of Passage and then turn right around and break it immediately. It's not nearly as bad as declaring war one turn after signing an agreement to export 308 gold per turn for 20 turns for Atomic Theory simply for a spy attempt, but verily, this is a pretty low betrayal.

But there's nothing we can do about it now.

In the end, England does nothing this turn. Surprising, but a good suprise, especially as our border defences are a bit less than optimal right now. However, the Maya do attack my Elite Swordsman with a Crusader - which backfires in a major way for them.

1292_Leader.png

Yi-Song-gye is our first Great Leader!

But wait! The Maya are not done.

1292_Leader_Lost.png

 Our Leader and our Explorer lost . That Longbowman will be killed.

1295 AD - To be fair to the English, we must acknowledge that the Dutch have a good deal of leverage on them with two English cities being on the Dutch continent and England having no reasonable hope of defending them. But that does not forgive England at all! They will be punished!

Our first priority is to increase border defence. Suwon, immediately on the border, has especially poor defence.

1295_Suwom.png

It costs us most of our treasury, but our border defences are shored up. Now it's just a matter of going on the offensive. And we start that right away at Oxford.

1295_Oxford.png

Our Cavalry is turned back by the Spearman! With all four Cavalry now injured and with nowhere to heal, we are forced to evacuate them to ships.

But we can strike immediately at sea. And as a Frigate does especially well on bombardment (taking off two hitpoints), we send in the Pirates!

1295_English_Caravel_Sunk.png

No enslavement, but Pirate victories are still really cool.

1297 AD -
1295_War_with_Arabia.png

Looks like the Netherlands is really mad at us. And Arabia is fighting both sides now. I just hope this pattern doesn't keep up. Two civilizations that had deals with us have now betrayed us in the course of two turns.

Once again England does not attack us at all. Were we not determined to win the war, we could just play phony war with them.

1300 AD - The Dutch still have a number of Caravels sailing the seas, but our Frigate-Pirate combination is too much for them.

1300_Dutch_Caravel_Sunk.png

Still no captured ships. Ah well, we'll have another Frigate there next turn anyways. The Dutch can't expect their ships to survive without some help from Frigates of their own with my Frigates redlining a Caravel a turn.

The time has come to end the phony war between Korea and England. The first target shall be Coventry. Defended by merely pikes and near the border, it is an easy target.

1300_Coventry.png

Two pikes fall, but Spearmen still defend the city. We anticipate capturing it next turn.

We also decide to advance against the Maya. They remain in Anarchy, and we are only too pleased to take advantage of that fact.

1300_Lagartero.png

1300_Lagartero_Captured.png

Two Cavalry die in the battle, but so do both defenders.

1302 AD -
1302_War_with_Spain.png

This is disconcerting. Now three alliances against me in three turns. So much for my alliance-against-the-Ottomans plan.

1302_Longbow_at_Suwon.png

England attacks Sariwon with two Medieval Infantry and a Longbow. They fail to kill a single Musketman. Thank you, walls.

1305 AD - The Ottomans want Theory of Gravity for peace. Not gonna happen. It look like I'll just have to sink a few of their ships to get peace.

But we'll sink the Dutch ships first. They're the real troublemakers.

1305_Frigate_Lost.png

That wasn't supposed to happen against a redlined ship. So we call in the pirates.

1305_Pirates.png

There we go! We enslave the Dutch ship, and send the new recuit after a Carthaginian Galley.

1305_Galley_Sunk.png

Damaging Carthage, no matter how little it is, is never a bad feeling. They hurt us considerably several millenia ago, and that makes normal diplomatic relations all but impossible.

Coventry is attacked by our Cavalry once again. Only Spearmen defend it this time.

1305_Coventry.png

And with its capture, we are quickly on top in the Anglo-Korean War.

I was playing the Ottomans, one of my Sipahi armies, while defending a city....

Spoiler :
the city flipped and i lost my second out of fifth armies...damn celts

That must really suck, getting a MGL ,the first one in game,AND THEN LOSING IT!

Quint is back! :woohoo:

Yes, I bet it does suck, especially when you lose it in the same turn

How about getting and losing 3 in a turn?

I'm not kidding. That actually happened.

YAY! Quintillus the great has returned!

Nice Update! too bad your leader died. but then you do require some challenge in the game ;)

I see this will require marines or a city via peace treaty deal, with that one-tile island. You have nice luck with privateers, I usually lose battles with them, even vs red-lined units. Looks like good progress.

1307 AD -
1307_Dutch_Cavalry.png

The Dutch attack my garrison by Oxford and kill a Musketman, but do not secure any more alliances. Whew!

1307_Aztecs_Maya_Peace.png

An inconvenience; I am alone on my front. But considering the other front that the Maya still have to face, this shouldn't be too bad a loss. The Aztecs were sending in mostly Spearmen anyways.

And indeed the Maya are struggling on the other front. Malinalco, the formerly Aztec city that split the Mayan Empire in two, has fallen to the Iroquois.

By this point the Egyptians have joined the Dutch, the Maya, and ourselves in the Industrial Age. It's suprising both island nations are doing so well, but certainly good for them. Sea invasions are always difficult, especially against advanced nations.

1315 AD -
1315_Electricity.png

Electric plugs in 1315 AD - something about that seems just a little bit funny. We set research to Replaceable Parts - as no one else yet has a single Industrial tech we're in no hurry to finish the Theory of Evolution.

The Maya are no longer in Anarchy, and, sure enough, are in Democracy :shake:. Play it how you want, Smoke Jaguar.

But we'll interfere. At Copan this time. Three Hwach'a are ready to bombard this turn. And they deal out one point of damage. Blimely, artillery units are frusterating until you get Artillery. Which, now that we think of it, will be pretty soon. But we've got Cavalry ready, so we attack despite the lacklustre bombardment.

1315_Copan.png

The first Cavalry redlines the Musketman before being entirely killed. Nice comeback for the Maya. Fortunately our second Elite Cavalry is victorious. A third Cavalry kills a Pikeman, leaving a Musketman and a Warrior to fight a defending Musketman. Not wanting to leave a redlined Musketman, nor promote it, we send in our own Musketman for some nice Musketman combat.

1315_Musket_Battle.png

And we lose. Their Musketman is promoted, and our Warrior fortifies. Maybe next turn we'll take it.

But for this turn, we still have hope to win the Battle of Hastings.

1315_Battle_of_Hastings.png

Our initial victory leaves only a Spearman defending the city, and we then easily take and raze it. We'll rebuild it nearby, slightly further from Suwon.

We then send out a Cavalry to take the two English workers building a mine in the above screenshot, and send one into the open as a lure for the Longbowman.

1315_Hastings_Razed.png

95% chance they'll go for the free worker.

By Coventry, we have to defeat three Medieval Infantry who approach the city.

1315_Coventry.png

This is done with much retreat and no losses.

Quick update on the demographics:

1315_Demographics.png

The two key factors, economy and industry, we lead in, even with the Dutch not in Anarchy. Fifth place in land area is damaging to score, but considering the three land superpowers on the other continent, we're not doing too poorly. And 65% literacy is pretty good for this time, though 5th place is lower than ideal in a Space Race. We'll have to work on that, but for now I'm guessing the newly conquered cities are dragging us down.

1317 AD -
1317_War_with_Vikings.png

No, Ragnor Lodbrock, no! I was thinking of getting you to align against the Dutch! It would have been much better, I assure you!

It really would have been better for them. See the below map. With Berserks, they could have easily taken Leiden, and the Dutch would have been too far away to launch a reasonable counterattack. But oh well, jacta alea est.

1317_Warrior_by_Middelburg.png

The Dutch attack and defeat my Warrior by Oxford. But of perhaps greater import is the Frigate approaching my Caravels. Fortunately we'll be dropping off our troops next turn, but we'll certainly be sending our own Frigates this way as well.

Arabia, meanwhile, gets two Spearmen to the gates of undefended Tikal. I thought they were at war with the Maya, but apparently they made peace. Without an operational embassy in either capital, I didn't find out until just now about the peace - thank goodness they didn't have Ansar Warriors.

1317_Tikal_Approached.png

England, surprisingly, goes for the meat by the ruins of Hastings.

1317_Worker_Lost.png

1317_English_Advance.png

The free worker is left alone. So much for a foolish AI.

(new update immediately above if you got here with the "go to most recent post" button)

That must really suck, getting a MGL ,the first one in game,AND THEN LOSING IT!

Yes, but I wasn't too surprised considering I got it from a Swordsman defending with no other units to help cover the leader.

I was playing the Ottomans, one of my Sipahi armies, while defending a city....

Spoiler :
the city flipped and i lost my second out of fifth armies...damn celts

That's even worse than losing the leader - then you've actually become used to the power associated with it.

Nice Update! too bad your leader died. but then you do require some challenge in the game ;)

This is true. A certain amount of challenge is a good thing.

I see this will require marines or a city via peace treaty deal, with that one-tile island. You have nice luck with privateers, I usually lose battles with them, even vs red-lined units. Looks like good progress.

If I bother with capturing it. This is space race, not conquest, so I can leave the island alone with no problems.

I'd probably target the Dutch coastal cities with tons of Marines first. Taking a couple Dutch cities, even if I can't actually keep them, would help a lot more than one lone Aztec city - or even the entire Aztec empire, really.

The privateers are being kind, though Frigates help a lot. So far they've actually been worth their cost in shields - an unusual thing for privateers.
