Welcome to the 25th edition of the Lonely Hearts Club for BTS. In the Lonely Hearts Club we explore strategies to cope with one of the most dreaded situations in Civ IV ( possibly the main reason for reloads after the military collapse one :p ): starting in isolation....

For the 25th game in BTS the choosed leader was Hatshepsut of the Egyptian:

I wonder why I postponed Hatty for such a long time, being her one of the most popular leaders in Civ IV. A good trait combination, a strong early UU and a pretty decent UB make Hatty a strong player and it is not uncommon at all to see her as the strongest civ in game, regardless of being the human or the AI using it. Spiritual allows you to change civics without anarchy ( that in itself it is a huge asset ) and cheaper temples ( again a huge asset, especially in a high level ), and Creative is one of the big traits in game IMHO, because of the cheap libraries and theaters and the less need to worry about border popping in the early game.... Her UU is one of the strongest in game due to its earlyness ( in spite of this being a dubious asset in a LHC ) and the UB is the earliest specialist slot provider in the game. A strong package... lets see how it fares in here.

Her UU

Civ4ScreenShot0012.jpg

I already talked more extensively of the War Chariot in the Ramesses LHC... It is a pity that a UU so strong ( not OP like others, but pretty strong ) will be relegated to anti barb duties......

Her UB

Again, i already pointed my opinion on the Obelisk ( the vanilla name for the monument in Vanilla, BTW ) in the De Ramesses LHC.... I love this UB. It is the earliest specialist slot provider in the game and it can generate a prophet in a very early date and that in it self is a huge asset. The hired priests are also a decent hammer provider in cities without much of prod , but big food potential ( besides whipping that is :p ). It is a strong UB and I think it will be a strong asset in here.

The start (for reasons that I'll explain below, the warrior may not be exactly in that spot in your game ):
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0015.jpg

A all forested start..... coastal, 2 lakes, corn , 2 sugars ( well, atleast it is a :) resource )...... A pretty decent start ( it would be better in the hands of Willem though  ). And that gap in the forests right N of the settler suggests that there is something more......

Regarding the saves: given some complaints about the efects of the AI starting without archery in high levels ( giving a unfair advantage to AI that have early UU and/or have early warmongering tendencies ), I decided to make 3 WB saves ( all in the same zip file ). The WB saves are equal except for the fact that one of them ( labeled Monarch ) has all of the AI with archery as starting tech ( corresponding to a game started in Monarch ), one ( labeled Immortal ) has all of the AI with archery, hunting and agriculture as starting tech ( corresponding to a game started in Immortal ) while the last is the corresponding to a game starting in Noble ( labeled Noble ). All WB saves are playable in all levels, but ( for a example ) if you use the Monarch one the AI will start with archery ( and archers ) in any level. This has only a slight effect in the human directly ( mainly via the garrisons of barb cities ), but has a huge effect on the AI gaming in the outer lands ( avoiding scenarios like Pacal, Shaka or Sitting Bull to take all the barb cities and becoming moguls ). I strongly recommend the usage of the Monarch save if you want to play in Monarch+ and the Immortal at Immortal/Deity.... All the speeds are working well ( no more games ending in 1900 ) The saves are zipped... you only have to unzip this to the worldbuilder saves or for the PublicMaps folder ( either one will do ) and load it from the scenarios.
Any problem PM me...

P.S WB saves are crosscompatible between 3.13 and 3.17 if they don't have No Espionage ticked. No problem with the patches here :p

Again a small request ( not mandatory :p ) :

We ask the participants to do, if possible, a write-up with the victory save and a description of your game ( strategies, techs researched, wars,...). All the info should be in spoiler tags ( to not disturb other people's games ). If you want ( we would like to :p ) post reports at this moments of the game:

Checkpoint 1 - when we have explored the island and are aware of what resources it has. Its not so important when this is, but this is a time to discuss city sites etc. Don't look into a checkpoint 1 spoiler until you have reached this point yourself.

Checkpoint 2 - first contact - when we have met all the other AIs. At this point we can discuss our strategy to get to this point and our plans for dealing with them.

Checkpoint 3 - when we are committed to a victory condition (or at least think we are).

Checkpoint 4 - Victory (or defeat).

The last words are to wish good luck to all :goodjob: . And let the games begin!

P.S We don't have any kind of problem with defeats and reruns. Just play and enjoy ;)

It looks that I made a slight and unintended change ( ) while browsing the map ( WB when lags is prone to putting stuff where we don't want... like lions :gripe: ) . That is clearly a grassland FP . Will correct ASAP and sorry for the inconvenience.

@ semirami: yeah, that is odd.

Probably first going to finish the IU game - or let the IU game finish me  - before I start on this one. Egypt can be strong in isolation (since you're practically ensured christianity with your prophet generation, which means no trouble with getting a religion for OR/pacifism). Perhaps pulling a religious diplo win might be in order here. :D

Ok, problem corrected ( gone back to normal FP , as it was in the original map ( thank god I always keep it :p ) and new saves uploaded. Sorry for the inconvinience , semirami.

P.S Please remove or spoiler your image. It has spoiler info ;)

Wait I want the grassland flood plain back :D,talk about a gp farm
all that extra food is worth a gp by itself ;)

Emp/Marathon

Checkpoint 1:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0001-3.jpg

Nice icland! A lot of food and grassland tiles, but without early happy resources. I decided to postpone Fishing this time. Hatty starts with Agriculture and there is corn and farmable sugar, I am limited to size 5 for now and I have a lot of forests to chop, so I went for BW. As you can see, there is no copper, but there is stone and I deffinetely want to build The Pyramids very early to increase the happy cap. I want a religion as well and I'll probably use the benefit from UB and will lightbulb Theology. The first hut popped for Mysticism, very needed tech. I'll probably go for cultural victory. Evertything screams for that. Incense for cathedrals, stone for UoS and SM+ early Theology and AP, Pyramids and spiritual, so I can use Universal Suffrage to rush-buy cheap temples and cathedrals at any time. I plan to run SE and use another prophet to lightbulb Divine Right and a scientist to do the same with Philosophy. For now I am researching AH for the UU. War chariots are much much better than Archers and I'll need the tech soon anyway. I hope there will be some horses nearby.

3 of the last 4 LHC leaders have been creative :p.

Anyway, it's going to be difficult to resist another AP cheese fest with hatty since she has EASY access to priests.

I don't see anything suggesting we settle elsewhere so in place sounds good.

Emperor/Epic,
Checkpoint 1:

Spoiler :
4000 BC - 2150 BC: Isolation, Shmisolation

Techpath went Mining-BW (no copper)-Fishing-Sailing (yes, the GLH again) -Hunting.

Two pleasant surprises were found on the island. First of all, there is stone present, giving a leg-up on some wonders. Secondly, there is reachable land from the shores, making the Great Lighthouse (yes, again) a possibility. Besides all this, Hatty's lands are nice and green.

lonelyhatty_1.jpg

Memphis and Heliopolis were settled, after Memphis' first border pop we can scout out the landmass to the east. And so the first workboat is sent, where at 2150 BC we find:

lonelyhatty_2.jpg

Willem! So we're isolated, but not thát isolated!

That is of course a major impact on my strategy. TGL will now be built double quick, and the tech path can be taken more liberal since Willem will trade some techs (in my experience the AI does not monopolize certain techs, such as Monotheism and Monarchy). And maybe there are even others. For now, I'll have to wait at Willem's borders until someone learns to write. :D

@Paulus

Spoiler :
Willem won't trade techs with you, unless if he is friendly, although resource trades is nice thing, and be carefull he will attack you at pleased, if you neglect your power raiting!

Spoiler :
Yes, I know that. As I remarked however, there are certain techs that the AI will always trade. (might be a bug though...) I've never had any difficulty obtaining monotheism or monarchy from the AI, even if only 1 AI has the tech.

Checkpoint 1 and such. 2700 BC

Emperor/Epic
Spoiler :

4000 settle in place. warrior then workboat then worker. i'll go from there. Fishing to BW
3800 hunting from hut
3575 gold from hut (91)
2950 revolt to slavery. pottery/writing next
2875 IRON WORKING FROM A HUT. I've had stupid good hut lucky lately......!
2700 Island is explored. I'm going....to....DOTMAP ZOMG what?! It's probably a hole in my game, so help me and be kind as unlike my war ability I doubt my dotmaps are emperor-class.

2700bcsouth0000.jpg

2700bcnorth0000.jpg

You can probably guess that I'm going for mids in this one. Stone should help with that a lot without taxing my short-term TOO much.

I'm not known for my dotmapping. Actually, it's possible I'm known for NOT doing it? Who knows. This time I'm doing it though. I ask for help as it's probably one of the weakest remaining aspects of my game. The island is explored.

I'm signing up for this.

I'll give it another go At Emporer level, but Marathon, so I can compare my effort to Semirami.

I know I rush too much, I know I don't optimize my builds/research...

As such, I'm lazy at Monarch, and getting away with it, a few losses at Emporer should sharpen up my skills.

P.S. I had a go at the Immortal University game, played lazy again, decided to go for an early worker grab off Churchill, and paid the penality.

Again I was lazy in research, Writing 3rd tech?? Bronze not untill the 5th...DOH....:lol:

Going to give this a serious go, no getting disheartened due to barb incursions.

Thanks Rolo...I really enjoy this..

I'll be giving it a go once I finish the current WAK thread, which could be awhile. I'm putting off posting an update there because it takes such a damn long time that I'm slightly less than excited about spending on it. Should start here in the next couple of days though. Will be playing it Prince/Epic, possibly with Monarch save (though more likely Noble; depends on how optimistic I'm feeling).

Part II - 1150 not met all AIs

Spoiler :

2175 I settle sheep/stone
2075 I have writing, now going masonry then AH. I want mids.
1550 Settle dual fish gp farm.
1350 Whip worker in thebes, overflow into mids. Time for chops.
800 I complete mids.
625 "Commerce" along the east is settled.
455 Met willem. Hmm. Not pure isolation I guess. After CoL I'm going sailing to get some trade routes then.
245 I settle easy calendar commerce and iron then workshop on the same turn.
230 Doing so gave me mild strike problems but nothing some tile swapping didn't take care of easily enough...and I still get 31 BPT.
145 AD Now that I have some trade routes, currency/CoL, and 83 BPT, I'm going for construction - I want Willem's land ;).
385 I have calendar and am going for philosophy for some religion. Willem doesn't have one either which is surprising kind of given culture affinity.
475 Willem will beat me to taoism so I just swap to some religious civic techs and then I'm going the medieval line.
625 I revolt to taoism.
685 There is an interesting opportunity since I have MC and willem does not - I could conceivably blockade him with triremes and utterly screw him. The problem is that this would hurt me in terms of commerce somewhat badly, and that would put me behind other AIs. I decide to risk it and allow the trade to continue (only I am benefiting).
760 10 turns on engineering - trebs/xbows will own willem, considering he doesn't have MC. I will have to act fast to get FP up over there though - I do NOT want to make a colony!!!
970 I meet sal and MM. I'm backwards TT :(.
980 I declare on willem and shuttle 10 units (4 xbows, 5 catas, and a sword) over. Trebs will come as I build them but he doesn't have longbows yet so why not...
990 I lose one xbow attacking maastricht.
1000 I begin shuttling over another set of units - all swords and war chariots from early in the game.
1010 espionage indicates willem has 8 turns on feudalism
1130 I capture his holy city just before I see some longbows :).
1140 I take some gold and gpt for peace to build up more forces!
1220 I get beat to liberalism.
1260 More war on dutch

Edit: Looks like I lost this one. My impatience while running BUG caused me to make outlandish errors . I configured it so it doesn't lag my system to hell so I kind of like it now. Oh well...icebreaker game I guess. I'll replay this.

Yes..2nd all ready, had a real Brain fart, went Pottery 1st... Some bright idea about having early Granneries...

Scouting warrior got eaten by a lion, and barb galley pillaged a fishing net..and I lost GREAT LIGHTHOUSE IN 1550 BC

So decided to replay, at least I admit it..

2nd try
Spoiler :
As per usual, Scouting warrior eaten by ANOTHER LION.!!!! 2/2 First up losses to lions...

Worker popped hut near capital for a SCOUT...wooo hooo save's me researching hunting early...Scout has paid hansome dividends...popping both Animal Husbandry (No research)...:D, and Bronzeworking (1/2 way through )

Do we have BRONZE...well no.......

Do we have HORSES....DO WE WHAT!!!!!!!!1 AND I've gotten the Charriot quest to boot..8 chariots & state Religion before Classical age Yuk Yuk Yuk.

15citiesmapWOWWIE0000.jpg

Some preliminary cities...15 in total, 12 are coastal, Going for both Stonehenge and Great lighthouse. Pyramids with stone as 3rd city, 2nd will be to the West, (Fish/floodplains) for a settler pump...

Yes...I've met 3/5 remaining civs...

Spoiler :

Don't spoil my party...ok I've met Saladin, Mansu and Qin, who was Saladins vassal for protection?? they we're all Hindu...

Hinducrapheads0000.jpg

Qin built the Apoc palace and its Jewish...what's he up too???

As for Willhem..well

TheWorldasIknowit0000.jpg

And wouldn't you know it, I no sooner attack, them BAM!!! He's got Fuedalism, I took a lot of Maces and catapults, nearly bankrupted my economy, but I did it.

Wonders that have saved me, Great Lighthouse, Great Libiary, Pyramids, Shewagon pagoda (swapped religious and Govenment civic's) and running a specialist ecomony and WHIPPING.....

My home island

Morecitiesrequired0000.jpg

I've still got another 5 cities planned....

Plan:-

1.Build fobidden palace in Amsterdam.
2.Spam Universities everywhere.
3.Tech Astonomy (Observ's everywhere)
4.Blow past the AI's with my superior research and lands.
5.Adopt Free religion for safeties sake.

My 'adopted home

My2ndhome0000.jpg

Space for atleast 2 more cities...I think.

Ultimate goal would seem to be a space race.

Tech's I'm way behind, But I should blow them away.

If I don't, its been an interesting run. lol maybe a Colony?? but Some nice wonders in Amsterdam, along with Confussion religion founded by Willhem.

 P.S. Liberialism is STILL AVAILABLE????? SAY WHAT????
