This round was all about "More."
We started out by founding Tripoli:
I figured that blocking Rome from Africa was a more pressing concern than blocking England from Scandinavia. I've had to chase Caesar through the Dark Continent before (see: Frederick), and, while it was fun once, I don't relish doing it again.
We then got a bit of mixed news:
Mansa Musa has bowed to the One True Faith, but Casablanca has been beset by Muslims! I gotta say, the real-world names combined with Choose Religions is really adding to the verisimilitude, here.
In 1000 B.C., our economy, flagging a bit from overexpansion, received two huge shots in the arm, both of them coming from the former French capital. First, we finished the Great Lighthouse:
I'm digging how crowded the English Channel is with lighthouses.
And second, Rabbi Akivah, learning at the feet of the Priests at the Temple of Artemis in Paris, was touched by God and went off to found the Church of the Nativity in Berlin. Okay, so maybe the verisimilitude isn't
totally there.
It turns out that Libya and Scandinavia weren't exactly mutually exclusive goals, either:
My biggest problem with founding Oslo before Tripoli was that I couldn't get the Mediterranean Galley through English waters, which made my only option marching the Settler through the barbarian haunted fjords. By waiting, I was able to provide it not only a comfortable Galley ride, but also an escort of fierce Charioteers.
This next screenshot illustrates a couple of things. First, as you can see, with both the Lighthouse and the Church up and running, our economy has gone from sputtering to thriving. Second... well, see for yourself:
The "Donate this city" algorithm needs some work.
So, in 850 B.C., I decided to wrap the round up. A fairly major decision is upcoming. I will begin with the massive Spanish Empire, stretching from Scandinavia to Libya. First, the north:
And the south:
As you can see, the Oracle is one turn from completion in Paris. I don't know. Blame it on keeping Louis around as governor. That city is a fantastic Wonder pump! Anyway, the question is what to learn from it. Here's the tech screen:
We can't make the usual Metal Casting slingshot, but Code of Laws, Theology, Aesthetics, Monarchy, Alphabet, Iron Working, Horseback Riding, and Mathematics are all available! For the moment, I'm kind of torn between Aesthetics, Code of Laws, and Monarchy, but I really want to glean some more opinions before I take the plunge.
Here's a quick peek at the Diplomacy Screen:
It's a Christian world. Hattie's just livin' in it.
And militarily? Well, let's just say that it's a good thing we're playing on Monarch and everyone is Pleased with us:
The military is being built up as we speak. Both Madrid and Berlin are pumping out units. We're still fairly vulnerable right now, though.
So, thoughts? Do we build up and go back to war, or build enough to deter treachery and work on infrastructure to become an economic superpower? Or do we stay the course and continue to fill the gaps, hemming in our opponents? And what should I do about that Oracle, anyway?
