This round began with Cyrus completing the Statue of Zeus. As a lot of folks had been saying, we're going to have to curry favor with him. He's suddenly a much tougher nut to crack.
In 535, I called Catherine to my palace and gave her the dreaded "Let's discuss something else" line. Look at her face. She knows what's coming:
You all were right. Catherine was at her weakest, and, as a result, her heretical beliefs needed to be "reformed" quickly.
Yaroslavl' fell easily and was renamed St. Petersburg:
This left two St. Petersburgs on the map. This is, of course, unacceptable. Unfortunately for Catherine, the player cannot rename AI cities.
While punishing Russia for its weakness, I began mollycoddling Cyrus. First, I brought him into the fold:
I'm amazed that's all it took. Hopefully that doesn't make him just as easy for the Muslims to bribe back. Of course, he's still hissy with us. Baby steps, people.
Jacques Cartier, explorer of the Canadas, decided to stay home in this world and open Cartier Papier:
Ba-dum-ching! I thought about the Golden Age, but that can wait. Getting to Liberalism is more important right now.
In 580, I set about fixing that annoying duplicate-name problem:
Catherine, beaten down by her neighbors and on the brink of extermination, decided to kiss the ring:
Could I have wiped her out? Certainly, but this vassalizes her early enough that she can recover. Now, once our Conquistadors enter obsolescence, they can enter Russia, turn in their breastplates for fur hats and ride again as Cossacks!
In 595, we met Tokugawa, who's still a bitter old man even when you share the faith:
Poor Tokugawa. We've shown that you can kick ass on this map! Why do you always languish in obscurity?
Also in 595, foul Islamic magic somehow threw a hurricane at Stockholm!
Or maybe that's just God punishing us for misnaming a city.
By 610, it was time to correct the wrong Egypt had done to our Russian brothers in Christ:
The sanctity of this crusade was commemorated by Paris building a (gasp!) appropriate Wonder of the World:
And, just for kicks, a look at Berlin in 670:
As you can see, the double shrine has forced me to effectively turn a fantastic production city into a commerce city. Of course, once some cottages mature and Wall Street's running in there, it'll be an absolute beast.
In 685,
We gave Catherine what was rightfully hers. I honestly didn't feel like fending off all the outside cultural pressure, and the liberation will make her happy. And besides, it's bull that Egypt should be able to take Moscow.
In 730, Barcelona reminded the world that it, too, is a major religious city:
It also started on the University of Sankore. It's a little late, but there's still time to build up a religious economy.
The Crusade was strong in the north. Moscow fell easily and was returned to Christian rule. the south, however, was another story:
Siege weapons were picked clean from the African stack, turning them into glorified pillagers. They nevertheless got to the gates of Thebes before being decimated by Egyptian Catapults and War Chariots. The Super Medic Warrior was left alone with a barely-alive Maceman escort.
For the sake of the GG Unit, I was forced to make peace:
China was also finally ready to end the war:
So we're at peace. And what is peace but an opportunity to build up for war? The south is rapidly mobilizing for a proper assault on Egypt.
Oh. Peace is also an opportunity for Paris to build Wonders:
So 805 is where I decided to end things. Here's a look at England and the north:
Eastern Europe:
The balmy south:
Oh, and our first look at the hemisphere as a whole:
Cyrus is definitely a force to be reckoned with. Hopefully this doesn't turn into another Frederick game.
Power:
The decimation of that Egypt stack hurt more than I thought.
And diplomacy:
We don't really have a lot of friends that aren't "on the payroll."
Oh, and the Egyptian Army:
I know, it's lacking in siege. But it's on the way.
So, is the world big enough for us and Cyrus? I'd like to smash Egypt first, but a reckoning with Persia needs to happen, preferably soon. Hopefully he can become our ally peacefully. Probably he can't.
Oh, and with foreign resources and Notre Dame giving us happiness, is it maybe time to move on from Monarchy? Perhaps Representation to take better advantage of our Angkor Wat Priests?
