King of the World #5: Isabella

I'd definitely try to get Asoka on your side against Cyrus. I'd agree with finishing off Egypt first.

Forget Egypt. The only thing that could be a bump in the your way to victory is Persia ( since China seems to be a non-entity in this game and Asoka ... well, it's in peacenik mode as he's most of the time ) and as soon as you move vs Persia , the better.

You could do a northern campaign in central Asia while gifting some cities to the Russians and to Mali ( since they have Visigoth in there, they might accept ). It would not boost you to victory automatically, but it would wear down Persia to a managable level.

Take egypt on your way to Persia. Egypt will be a good launch pad to strike at the heart of the persian empire quickly. Removing Egypt from you game will also give you the advantage of securing your african flank against attack allowing you to increase your forces at the front. Also on the plus side, taking egypt will give your troops more experience and promos allowing you to field a more effective army. Finally while attacking egypt you can keep building military so you can really land a decisive blow on the Persians when you do attack. But whomever you attack, don't delay too much in attacking either one.

In this round we put the screws to Egypt (Sorry, Rolo!) and set ourselves up for our battle royale vs. Cyrus.

I started by shifting to Representation (We now had sufficient happiness sources that Monarchy was no longer necessary) and Slavery (With Europe pretty much improved and with more Workers than we now need, the boost from Serfdom is no longer important).

In 870, Berlin spawned a Great Person:

It was finally time for our first Golden Age. Our research and production jumped significantly.

As Europe rejoiced, Africa was wracked by war:

Civ4ScreenShot0002-13.jpg

I felt that that stack would be sufficient to pummel Egypt, with more reinforcements on the way via Galley.

Elephantine fell quickly:

Civ4ScreenShot0008-9.jpg

The Spy that was going to take Thebes quickly, however, was caught before he even got close. Ah, well. Trebs'll do the job just as well.

Alexander came by, asking for a handout:

With the University of Sankore being completed in Barcelona, I took its teachings of religious unity to heart and handed the secret of Machinery over.

It paid dividends:

Civ4ScreenShot0010-8.jpg

Welcome to the fold, Alex. That's one less war to worry about, and now we also don't need to fret about Greek cultural pressure.

Paris, seeing Barcelona finishing its second Wonder, was not to be outdone:

Civ4ScreenShot0012-8.jpg

Yeah, I know. Paris is getting ridiculous.

In 940, with the Spanish army closing in on Thebes, Spanish scientists made a significant breakthrough, leading us ever closer to our Unique Unit:

Civ4ScreenShot0013-9.jpg

We only needed Gunpowder, which was a two-turn tech.

The siege of Thebes led once again to a delayed takeover:

Civ4ScreenShot0014-6.jpg

I wasn't going to leave my Super-Medic alone with Egyptian War Chariots at the gates. So I held off and let Hattie reinforce.

Now, as you all might know, I never build Castles. Economics is usually a big tech for me, and Walls are usually not in the build queue. This game has somewhat changed my mind, though. Not only are the free Trade Routes cool, but you get cool events like this one:

Civ4ScreenShot0015-7.jpg

Casablanca is something of a military pump, too, so that certainly works out.

Thebes fell quickly:

Civ4ScreenShot0016-7.jpg

Ho, ho, ho. Now we have the Great Wall.

We also have the AP:

Civ4ScreenShot0017-6.jpg

And the Taj Mahal:

Civ4ScreenShot0018-7.jpg

Aberdeen getting in on the act! And now our wildly beneficial Golden Age can continue!

We ended up winning the papal seat (obviously):

Interesting that Tokugawa's on our side and Cyrus is not. Persia will pay for that.

Our Spanish juggernaut upgraded its Knights to Conquistadors and continued to roll into Memphis:

Civ4ScreenShot0021-6.jpg

To the north, though, it was a race against time. Heliopolis was under siege by our Greek vassals! We had Conquistadors in the area. We didn't have time to bring up our siege weapons:

Civ4ScreenShot0023-5.jpg

This was the last straw for our Queen of the Nile:

Civ4ScreenShot0024-6.jpg

She also "volunteered" to be baptised as a Christian. Welcome to the fold!

Barcelona continued to be holier than thy city:

Civ4ScreenShot0025-6.jpg

Probably not much of a night life, there.

In 1080, Attila the Hun made a terrible strategic error. He rounded up some Horse Archers to wreak some havoc. Oh, no, so scary, right? Well, first off, he did this about a millenium too late. Horse Archers are now about as scary as Wolves. Secondly, he chose the wrong spot to start his reign of terror:

Civ4ScreenShot0026-6.jpg

... Right next to my staging grounds for war with Persia. Well, easy XP for my stack of Conquistadors, I guess.

So here's that stack:

Civ4ScreenShot0027-7.jpg

As you can see, I've upgraded my Trebs into Cannons. So we have Conquistadors and Citadel-fueled Cannon. Spain is at its zenith. We will never again reach this peak of power. It is time to punish Cyrus for adopting Free Religion. And with Persia comes its lapdog, the heathen Arabs (who, yes, have built a shrine in Mecca).

Before we start planning the war, though, here's the state of the world. First, the map:

Civ4ScreenShot0028-5.jpg

Oh, any ideas on real-world names for our new possessions?

Diplomacy:

Civ4ScreenShot0029-5.jpg

I asked Tokugawa if he wanted to join the family for protection from the Chinese and Mongols. He's too proud.

Techs:

Civ4ScreenShot0030-4.jpg

Yeah, we're way ahead. Saladin, though, is on the cusp of his UU.

The Power Graph:

Civ4ScreenShot0031-4.jpg

Yeah, we're way ahead.

And the Domestic Advisor:

Civ4ScreenShot0032-4.jpg

So, war plans. I'm kind of thinking Mecca should be our first real objective. Taking that will cripple Saladin and give us yet another huge source of income (Remember the Shrine?). With Cyrus, we (or, more probably, Catherine) will have to weather his SoD before we can launch a real assault. The cities along the Persian Gulf are the real prize. Persia's Russian possessions are just taking up space.

Then again, we are also rapidly approaching the point at which we can turn our greedy eyes westward across the ocean, so I'm thinking our goal should be a quick and dirty capitulation rather than an all-out war of annihilation.

Oh, and the Golden Age. Yeah, our initial Merchant plus the Taj Mahal have kept us going throughout the round. We have a Merchant, an Artist, and a Scientist holed up in Paris to keep it up. Should we? And, if so, who should be the odd man out?

Heliopolis should be Damascus although its not on the tigris in real life, but close enough for your purposes. Elephantine could be Alexandria, to recognize your new vassal's emminent good sense in getting on the winning team. Thebes isn't quite far enough north to be Cairo but its the closest so maybe just leave as is and memphis could be Khartoum. Good round I look forward to the imminent demise of persia. You're gonna want to get Cyrus' four cities in the neighborhood of Iran and Iraq and take the arabian peninsula for yourself. The only thing to watch for is Saladin not renouncing his vassal status. As long as saladin is Cyrus' vassal you can't vassal either of them.

Take saladin down, you troops are already in the area, the shrine should be your main goal.

Focus on Arabia. Catherine and Alex form a very nice buffer so you don't have to worry about Cyrus much.

Bandwidth exceeded message from Photobucket. Gonna conquer them too?
That may be a problem...

Take Cyrus....

"Remember the Frederick game"

Cyrus should be easier to kill once you have control of the Mideast. ( and btw i do remember freddy, wow that was a interesting game:crazyeye:) Also, the sit is different. Cyrus doesnt have as much time as he did in the Fred game to build up his forces. Cathy and Saladin ( if you vassalize him:mischief:) and even Alex if hes still with you, can be a good buffer. :goodjob:

Ack! Well, it resets on the 18th. Today's the 17th. So I think we'll just treat this as "Neal didn't post a round today." I played a really great Round 9, it'll be up tomorrow :)

If this happens again, I'll shell out the 40 bucks for the upgraded account.

I know the situation is diferent.... but Cyrus can become a big threat and as soon as Neal moves vs him the best. The fred issue :p happened because Neal hesitated before taking cyrus down , remember?

Neal is teching Astronomy in five turns on Epic.

I think he'll be fine. :p

A couple of things:

1) We are a lot stronger than we were in the Frederick game. Not only do I consider myself a better player now than I was a year ago, but we grabbed and consolidated Europe a heck of a lot earlier. If you recall, the Frederick game was largely built on smoke and mirrors. We shouldn't have been able to take Rome. Elizabeth should have eaten our breakfast in her little backstab war. There have been no such difficulties in this game. We have both our Unique Unit and the final product of our Unique Building ridiculously early and in significant numbers.

2) Persia is a lot weaker. Cyrus was a proper world power in that game, with an up-to-date army that he had been building for centuries. In this game, Cyrus is in second place only because he's the best of a bad bunch. He's going to be fielding Longbowmen against Conquistadors and Cannon.

Well, the argument is kind of moot. Persia is going down. The only delay now might be a quick trip into Arabia to nip Cyrus' malcontent little vassal in the bud, first.

Oh, and Joshua? To be fair, I am in the middle of a protracted Golden Age, so take those teching times with a grain of salt. Still, you're right. We're the big dog now.

True, but your beakers have doubled since when the golden age started. (500 bpt to 1100 bpt) There's more than just a golden age at work here.

By all means continue though, it's fun to see how fast you can tech. Steel in 1100 AD is pretty great, golden age or not.

Just a off topic question here, i dont use photobucket. Why did all your screenshots disappear?

Read a few posts above. His bandwidth ran out, it should hopefully be back tomorrow.

I can still see them though. Horray for browser cache. :king:
