In this round we put the screws to Egypt (Sorry, Rolo!) and set ourselves up for our battle royale vs. Cyrus.
I started by shifting to Representation (We now had sufficient happiness sources that Monarchy was no longer necessary) and Slavery (With Europe pretty much improved and with more Workers than we now need, the boost from Serfdom is no longer important).
In 870, Berlin spawned a Great Person:
It was finally time for our first Golden Age. Our research and production jumped significantly.
As Europe rejoiced, Africa was wracked by war:
I felt that that stack would be sufficient to pummel Egypt, with more reinforcements on the way via Galley.
Elephantine fell quickly:
The Spy that was going to take Thebes quickly, however, was caught before he even got close. Ah, well. Trebs'll do the job just as well.
Alexander came by, asking for a handout:
With the University of Sankore being completed in Barcelona, I took its teachings of religious unity to heart and handed the secret of Machinery over.
It paid dividends:
Welcome to the fold, Alex. That's one less war to worry about, and now we also don't need to fret about Greek cultural pressure.
Paris, seeing Barcelona finishing its second Wonder, was not to be outdone:
Yeah, I know. Paris is getting ridiculous.
In 940, with the Spanish army closing in on Thebes, Spanish scientists made a significant breakthrough, leading us ever closer to our Unique Unit:
We only needed Gunpowder, which was a two-turn tech.
The siege of Thebes led once again to a delayed takeover:
I wasn't going to leave my Super-Medic alone with Egyptian War Chariots at the gates. So I held off and let Hattie reinforce.
Now, as you all might know, I never build Castles. Economics is usually a big tech for me, and Walls are usually not in the build queue. This game has somewhat changed my mind, though. Not only are the free Trade Routes cool, but you get cool events like this one:
Casablanca is something of a military pump, too, so that certainly works out.
Thebes fell quickly:
Ho, ho, ho. Now we have the Great Wall.
We also have the AP:
And the Taj Mahal:
Aberdeen getting in on the act! And now our wildly beneficial Golden Age can continue!
We ended up winning the papal seat (obviously):
Interesting that Tokugawa's on our side and Cyrus is not. Persia will pay for that.
Our Spanish juggernaut upgraded its Knights to Conquistadors and continued to roll into Memphis:
To the north, though, it was a race against time. Heliopolis was under siege by our Greek vassals! We had Conquistadors in the area. We didn't have time to bring up our siege weapons:
This was the last straw for our Queen of the Nile:
She also "volunteered" to be baptised as a Christian. Welcome to the fold!
Barcelona continued to be holier than thy city:
Probably not much of a night life, there.
In 1080, Attila the Hun made a terrible strategic error. He rounded up some Horse Archers to wreak some havoc. Oh, no, so scary, right? Well, first off, he did this about a millenium too late. Horse Archers are now about as scary as Wolves. Secondly, he chose the wrong spot to start his reign of terror:
... Right next to my staging grounds for war with Persia. Well, easy XP for my stack of Conquistadors, I guess.
So here's that stack:
As you can see, I've upgraded my Trebs into Cannons. So we have Conquistadors and Citadel-fueled Cannon. Spain is at its zenith. We will never again reach this peak of power. It is time to punish Cyrus for adopting Free Religion. And with Persia comes its lapdog, the heathen Arabs (who, yes, have built a shrine in Mecca).
Before we start planning the war, though, here's the state of the world. First, the map:
Oh, any ideas on real-world names for our new possessions?
Diplomacy:
I asked Tokugawa if he wanted to join the family for protection from the Chinese and Mongols. He's too proud.
Techs:
Yeah, we're way ahead. Saladin, though, is on the cusp of his UU.
The Power Graph:
Yeah, we're way ahead.
And the Domestic Advisor:
So, war plans. I'm kind of thinking Mecca should be our first real objective. Taking that will cripple Saladin and give us yet another huge source of income (Remember the Shrine?). With Cyrus, we (or, more probably, Catherine) will have to weather his SoD before we can launch a real assault. The cities along the Persian Gulf are the real prize. Persia's Russian possessions are just taking up space.
Then again, we are also rapidly approaching the point at which we can turn our greedy eyes westward across the ocean, so I'm thinking our goal should be a quick and dirty capitulation rather than an all-out war of annihilation.
Oh, and the Golden Age. Yeah, our initial Merchant plus the Taj Mahal have kept us going throughout the round. We have a Merchant, an Artist, and a Scientist holed up in Paris to keep it up. Should we? And, if so, who should be the odd man out?
