CRISIS ON THE QUEBEC-CANADA BORDER. Moah, Canada. Tensions have risen dramatically between the French protectorate of Quebec and the New Englander protectorate of Canada this year after a series of events. Iroquois-Canadian citizens were arrested running guns and munitions to Iroquois in central Quebec and sentenced to life imprisonment. In response, a small Canadian militia group crossed the Quebecois border, raided the prison, and freed their compatriots. Despite all odds the militia managed to return to the safety of the Canadian border. After a brief confrontation between the Canadian military and the Quebecois pursuit force, the initial crisis was limited. However, in the wake of the crisis, a number of Quebecois have begun marching in the streets to demand war against Canada, claiming that this event was the last straw in Canadian perfidy. The militiamen who participated in the raid have become instant heroes in Canada, and have become more or less honored dignitaries wherever they roam. FIGHTING IN EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. North America was brought one step closer to war this year when Pennsylvania, a close ally of New England, entered into military conflict with the French Dominion of New Jersey. At the moment, no one is quite sure how the battle started, but it has been confirmed that New Jersey forces invaded eastern Pennsylvania until they were decisively defeated by Pennsylvanian military forces. This has proven a humiliating defeat for the French dominion, and they have withdrawn to standing borders. The New Jersey government has blamed the Pennsylvanians for antagonizing them and argued that they sparked the conflict, not New Jersey.
Casualty List
New Jersey: 3 Infantry Brigades, 2 Artillery Brigades
Pennsylvania: 3 Artillery Brigades

MILITARY COUP ATTEMPTED IN QUEBEC. Quebec City, Republic of Quebec. Rightist military leaders, alarmed by the Socialist victory in last year’s elections attempted a military coup against the government. A brutal battle erupted in the streets of the capital between the mutineers and loyalist brigades, and the Congressional house was held against attack. Much of the city was damaged, and casualties were extremely high when the fighting spread to other Quebecois military installations. Lingering resentment remains, and some socialists have called for a purge of the military to remove any more possible supporters of the rightists. (-1 Stability, -7 Infantry Brigades, -2 Cavalry Brigades, -1 Artillery Brigade)

NEW ALLIANCE ESTABLISHED. Mohawk, Iroquois Nation. The war between the Sauk and Fox has had a lasting resonance across North America. The natives of the west have assembled a defensive alliance between them in order to protect themselves against possible European or Sauk aggression.

SAUK-FOX CRISIS. Toronto, Canada. Under the protection of Canadian naval guns, the Fox have evacuated the government and large numbers of civilians, soldiers, and industrial parts off the Fox peninsula. They have set up a government in exile within Canada and have pledged to one day liberate their occupied country. Several large camps have been established in western Canada as the new army prepares itself for the inevitable resumption of the conflict. The Sauk and Quebec have issued protests against New Englander and Canadian support for the Fox, and have accused those governments of helping an illegal organization conduct ruthless attacks upon their nations.

VIRGINIAN SLAVE REFORM CONTINUES. Richmond, Virginian Empire. Two more provinces have declared slavery illegal this year, and efforts are being taken to prevent mass migration of blacks, restricting their movement. Military forces have been assembled to prevent uprising or unrest, holding together the situation. So far, all changes have gone off peacefully, continuing the gradual emancipation within the Virginian Empire.

Central/South American News Report

PERNAMBUCO ELECTIONS. Recife, Pernambuco. This year’s elections were surprisingly won by a highly conservative movement led by the wealthy Miguel Lisboa. His party has taken full control of the apparatus of government, including the military and bureaucracy. All other parties have been made illegal by the Lisboaists, establishing a single party dictatorship. (+2 Stability)

RIOTS IN BOLIVIA. Sucre, Bolivia. Socialist agitators sparked riots in Bolivia this year, possibly caused by the growth of socialism throughout South America. Military involvement was swift, and civilian casualties are so far unknown but believed to be in the low hundreds. The Socialists have pledged to continue “the struggle against capitalism.” (-1 Stability)

MEXICAN IMPERIUM GROWS. Mexico City, Empire of Mexico. Mexican influence extended into South America this year even further, bringing the Mexican Imperial Protectorate’s gaze over both Chile and the Buenos Aires Protectorate. The governments of both nations have placed the fates of their countries in the hands of Mexico. In Chile, the reaction to this has been violent and angry, with the populace outraged at the move, and demonstrating in the streets. They have stated that Chile is obviously more than capable of holding its own against aggressors and deserves better than to be part of the Mexican Empire. (-3 Stability in Chile)

NICARAGUAN CANAL COMPLETE. Leesburg, Virginian Empire. As of January, 1903, a Virginian effort to open up a new shipping route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific proved to be wildly successful. Ships from all nations have begun using the new Nicaraguan Canal to ship from Europe to the Far East. Massive influx has been seen from this new development, increasing the overall Virginian economy by an incredible 33%. Ships from all over using this canal has strained the system to overwhelming degrees, and some people believe that the sheer volume of shipping may require expansion efforts as soon as 1920. BRAZILIAN REFORM FAILS. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. An attempt at economic reform failed miserably after countless amounts of government spending hoping to spur industrial development. Though very limited amounts of industry did manage to take hold and some financial institutions did hold, the majority of people resented and resisted the government attempt to dictate their livelihoods. Wealthy businessmen, unions, native tribes, and farmers all fought against government actions to extend control over natural resources and develop new industry. The unions, dominated by the communists and socialists, insisted that the program was worthless because it did not go far enough, demanding complete nationalization. Most of the new developments have been abandoned and left derelict. Unrest and resistance to the standing government continues to grow throughout Brazil. Promises to establish a universal education and health care program have not eased the growing tension, as more and more workers rally to the communist banner. (-3 Stability, +1 EP)

ITALY ELECTIONS. Rome, Republic of Italy. This year’s elections in Italy saw a continuation of the same trends. The conservatives have continued to retain control over both the presidency and legislative branch of the Italian Republic. (+1 Stability)

AUSTRIA DESTROYED. Vienna, German Empire. After last year’s attempted invasion of Bohemia, retribution has come swiftly to the nation of Austria. Early in the year, military commanders attempted to remove the Austrian king through a military coup. This sparked civil war among the nation’s military and leadership, while Hungarian and German forces launched their invasion. Casualties for the invaders were remarkably low, as the Austrians fought among themselves. The Austrian King is missing, and believed dead in the rubble of Vienna. The nation has been divided into German and Hungarian sections, which have been annexed by those respective powers. Hungary has also used this opportunity to formally join the Berlin Alliance.
Casualty List
Austria: Destroyed
Hungary: 1 Artillery Brigade
Germany: 1 Artillery Brigade, 1 Cavalry Brigade

DANISH EXPEDITION FAILS. Copenhagen, Danish Empire. A team sent to reach the world’s South Pole failed to return to their ships this year. Though they landed on Antarctica without issue, the team failed to return by the allotted date, and has been assumed to be lost in the wilderness. This has been a tragic event, mourned by the Danish press.

BRIDGE PROJECT COMPLETED. Copenhagen, Danish Empire. The three year Brosskaber Project to connect a variety of islands throughout European Denmark has at last been completed. No real economic benefit has been seen from this construction, though all marvel at the engineering. Some concerns have been expressed about the constant need for maintenance and the minor inconvenience the bridges represent to localized shipping interests.

RUSSIAN IMPERIUM GROWS. Lesko, Galicia. Even as Austria falls to the armies of Hungary and Germany, the former friends of that nation look for new allies. The king of Galicia has pledged his nation to be a protectorate of the Russian Empire, increasing their imperial influence and granting Galicia protection from the possible threats from either the south or the north.

NEW INDUSTRY BOOMS IN RUSSIA. St. Petersburg, Russian Empire. An intrepid Russian industrialist has just patented the world’s first cheap automobile and the markets of Eastern Europe have swelled with demand for this new product. Over three dozen new factories have been set up by the Koroshikov Auto Company, which has provided great industrial wealth to the Russian Empire. (+5 economy)

African/Middle Eastern News Report

ZULU AND DANES REACH AGREEMENT. Christianstown, Danish Empire. After last year’s debacle off the coast of Liberia, Danish and Zulu negotiators have agreed to a compromise reimbursement for the sinking of the Zulu fleet. Two Danish light cruisers and limited reparations have been paid to the Zulu for the devastation caused. At home, extreme anger has risen at this move by the Danish government, sparked by Swedish taunting in the papers, claiming that the Danes failed in their duties as paternal imperialists. Submitting to a “inferior race” has resulted in major protests and rallies against the Danish government, and calls have been made for a vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister. Asian/Pacific News Report

CHINESE CONFLICT. Jinan, French Empire. The conflict in China continued to escalate this year as yet another warlord has risen after a mass military mutiny and revolt. This revolt has proven to be even more devastating than previous ones. The charismatic leader of Jiangxi has wrested away control of most of the imperial armed forces, while those who remain fight a losing struggle against Yunnan. Some regions of China previously in dispute have avoided actual violence this year. Russian military forces advanced to secure most of northern China, consolidating some semblance of order over the region once more. In the western part of the nation, Sinkiang troops managed to retake their prewar holdings, but have not advanced further despite the withdrawal of imperial forces. With the collapse of the empire ever present, some of the warlords have begun to turn upon each other. The warlord of Yunnan has expanded the war all the further, preaching radical thoughts against both Christians and Europeans in China. They invaded the neutral nation of Tibet, which in a surprise result, managed to repulse the attack. Tibet has not offered further attacks but has mobilized for war and fortified the border against future assaults from the east. A secondary attempt by Yunnan to seize several Guangxi port cities before the French also failed miserably, entering a brutal stalemate along the border between each side. Yunnan also fought a vicious war to the east against both the Imperial Chinese forces and the new warlord established in Jiangxi. They have been driven back by the former, while the Jiangxi managed to hold a stalemate deep within their territory against Yunnan. French forces in Guangxi have continued to fail to gain control over the region, as surprisingly strong resistance meets their technical superiority.
Casualty List
Tibet: 3 Infantry Brigades
Guangxi: 17 Infantry Brigades, 3 Cavalry Brigades, 5 Artillery Brigades
Yunnan: 45 Infantry Brigades, 3 Artillery Brigades
Jiangxi: 31 Infantry Brigades
Chinese Empire: 19 Infantry Brigades, 1 Cavalry Brigade, 2 Artillery Brigades
French Empire: 4 Infantry Brigades, 1 Cavalry Brigade, 2 Artillery Brigades

KOREAN DOMESTIC PROGRAM FINISHES. Seoul, Korean Empire. The long and expensive Territorial Development Project has been announced to have been completed this year. To all it represents a terrible failure of the government, as much money has been spent to little benefit. Private investors and businesses have ignored this program completely, and the factories and farms built remain empty of life or profit. The program has been an overall loss, hurting the economy more than helping. (-1 EP for Korea)

OOC

@dldjsnter or whatever, you don’t need to do constitutional reform as a project. Shoot me a PM of what sort of government ideas you have, and we’ll talk it out. The extra EP has been banked.

Once more, I apologize for the length of time it took to complete this update, but halfway through I thought of a more efficient way to do the battle system.

Next Update

Friday 6 PM, February 13, 2009. We'll also try to get one out on Sunday, in order to keep up the brisk pace.

:goodjob:

No mention of my project though? Or is it just no major dissent rise like Brazil this time. ;)

I wish to reinstate the fact that while Ecuadorian projects are to be more left-leaning than most other reforms, our reformation is one that will benefit all, not just the workers or farmers, but also the rich and military.
