In this round, I think we reach the pinnacle of the OCC economy.
I started, of course, by being charitable to my friends:
I made a number of cowardly gifts like that to my Buddhist allies. Normally, I have two or three cities churning out City Raiders at this point, so I feel... naked. Any goodwill I can foster with those close to me will be much appreciated.
Of course, I bowed and scraped even as my borders closed inexorably around Berlin:
As you can see, old Otto seems to have lucked into Gems in them thar hills. There is nothing that the Random Number Generator can give you, you old fool, that I cannot take away. Except for maybe the Herbalist random event. Or a Golden Age. Y'know what, never mind.
I made a fairly major trade with our noble Dutch allies:
Monotheism for Organized Religion and Monarchy to allow those Grapes to be improved. And a little pittance of gold on the side.
I immediately plunged the Shining City of Paris into two turns of desperate Anarchy:
Caste System is kind of inconsequential until we can run more specialists, but we're hitting a Wonder-rich stretch of Technologies, and OR's production bonus will be huge.
My Confucian missionary went off to make the Khmer international pariahs:
It didn't stick, sadly. He ended up Buddhist by round's end. Wang Kon, though, apparently digs my funky little bonus faith. He tried to get me to convert. Fat chance.
I built a couple of men in 290 B.C.:
We're at the point where population points take ridiculously long to grow, so the instant boost from The Hanging Gardens was nice. Along with the Culture and Great Engineer points. Ptolemy, of course, built an Academy somewhere between Stonehenge and the Pyramids, and taught the secrets of the universe to France's young minds. As you can also see, I started production on the Parthenon (which finished in 170 B.C.).
With said Wonder nearly complete and not caring too terribly much about the Statue of Zeus, I submitted to Gandhi's request for Aesthetics:
Again, Genghis Khan would have told the Indian leader to eat a bag of hell, but we're trying to be nice here.
In fact, I even joined the Indians in a fake war:
I can vouch for the fact that the Zulu are jerks. And Gandhi is, well, Gandhi. So I'm sure we're on the virtuous side of this little dustup. Of course, that doesn't mean that I'll actually send troops or anything. Perish the thought. I am part of the Coalition of the Apathetic. I also ended up in phony wars with Babylon and Persia.
We won the race to Music:
And, a turn later, we built the Great Library, which some say is the most crucial of all OCC Wonders. Two free population, boosted through Representation, are great additions to the team.
Justinian taught us the secret of paper money and showed us what happens when you get your hand caught in a mint:
I... I know that it's just a cartoon. But that looks
painful. That said, Currency is handy not only for the trade route, but also for the ability to offload obsolete techs for cash. Only at Cashfortechs.com.
Of course, not everything was hunky dory:
The Great Wall continues to mock us. Building that is now officially a mistake.
By 25 A.D., it was time to start buying my way back to peace:
Shaka needs a nap. Or maybe a drink. But, honestly, 45 gold is a reasonable price to pay for a cease fire.
In 55, I lost out on the Statue of Zeus:
So I took my money and started on the Sistine Chapel. If anything's gonna put the French borders over the top, that'll be it.
I made a backfill trade with Gandhi:
And finished Civil Service, jumping to Bureaucracy.
Happily, the Apostolic Palace was built by the infidels:
... Good. Now, unless someone sends in a missionary, they can make whatever crazy decisions they want, and they won't bother me none. You can also see that Willem, having founded Taoism, decided that Paris would be a fine place for his free Missionary to settle down. So I've got three Cathedrals I can build if things get slow. My apologies in advance to surrounding capitol cities.
So in 235, I finished Paper, built the Sistine Chapel, and birthed another Great Scientist (He settled down to teach at Ptolemy's academy). So here's a look at what we can research:
I'm thinking Education, grab Philosophy off trade, and grab Liberalism. Though maybe we should grab some more low-tier stuff first.
A stroll down the streets of gay Paree:
As you can see, Bismarck's Gems are coming in handy.
The trade screen:
We're ripe to pull off a few blockbusters. What do you think? Remember that maps are also available now with Paper.
And the world as we know it:
Sadly, Suleiman's capitol is Istanbul, so we're kind of limited in our ability to make They Might Be Giants jokes.
So, here we are, at our apogee. What should our priorities be? Liberalism? Military? I think our core OCC buildings are in place, at least for a while. I must say I'm ready to raze a capitol or two (I'm looking your way, Boudica). It's tough to find real decision points in an OCC. I feel like I'm just kind of doing what seems logical...
Here's the save:
