King of the World #10: Charles de Gaulle

Thinking of :gold: vs :commerce:.. I've been wanting to try a game where my :commerce: comes primarily from :traderoute:'s, having few/no cottages and no scientists.. but instead, have the GLighthouse, and have a ton of coastal cities, each with at least 3+ :traderoute:'s, then keep my economy afloat through merchant specialists. Think that would work? :crazyeye:

Try that with Hannibal. Carthage's UB is a harbour with +1 trade route, and the extra happy from Chm will help get your cities bigger (and thus better trade routes).

Oh, come on Neal! Give the United States a chance by razing the Aztec cities! Just send some muskets a/o rifles to raze some Aztec cities, and then just make a rush for the SR victory. It's sad to see a real-life superpower fade away to Aztecs that sacrifice Americans to fictional gods!

How many one tile empires could you wipe out in a single turn without much consequence? Any culture-pressured civs around who haven't bothered with a second city?

Ah nice! Thanks for the link. And to the person who posted above you, aye, Carthage looks like it'd do the best for this kind of economy.. fits well with history too! Though, I'm going to be trying this on the Earth 18 Map. Since I've already done an English win, I'm probably going to do Japan.. though maybe I'll just do an Earth 34 map instead and be Carthage afterall. I'unno yet.

Did this in a game on Earth for the lolz. Didn't realize it, but Jao was a vassal of Dar, who had multiple vassals, bribed some others, etc. In short, I got at least 15 people to declare on me:D

Besides, even if they aren't vassals, you will get "declared war on a friend" demerit with a lot of other civs.

In my defense, I was bored.

The round started simply enough. My good buddy Bismarck (After I coughed up that tribute, we're friends again, I guess) invited me along on a little fake war of his:

Civ4ScreenShot0005-1.jpg

Genghis Khan was something of a nuisance, anyway, so I joined the Germans in making mean faces across the Central Asian Steppe. I'd also gotten into a minor dustup with the Japanese, who may as well be on the moon for all they'll actually send over in a fight. So the French were technically at war, but, in truth, nobody noticed.

Everyone was too busy freaking out over Switzerland turning into a boiling lake of magma!

Civ4ScreenShot0006.jpg

Okay, so maybe that's more northern Italy, but still! We lost a Gem mine, a Wheat farm, and a Cottage. Ah, well. That'll give our trusty Worker something to do.

Oh, and what's the City of Lights without, well... Lights?

Civ4ScreenShot0007-1.jpg

This was kind of a vanity build, but those Hit Musicals do sell for quite a pretty penny on the international market. Not that we really need gold, but... Don't judge me!

In 1585, we picked up some backfill techs, both overtly....

Civ4ScreenShot0010-1.jpg

And covertly:

Civ4ScreenShot0009.jpg

Espionage teching is horribly expensive, but, I suppose that if I'm gonna be accumulating the points anyway, I may as well put them to use. Thanks, Great Wall! Anyway, you can see that we're finally working towards Rifling after grabbing Steam Power. The Levees are, as many have pointed out, a huge production boost for Paris, but our Musketeers aren't gonna hold out forever. We need real guns!

I'd also built a single Airship, which I sent around the world to see what could be seen and draw maps of it. It barely escaped Frankfurt before the German colony was overrun by natives:

Civ4ScreenShot0011-1.jpg

And checked up on international borders from north Africa to Canada to Malaysia.

I built another luxury Wonder in Paris:

Civ4ScreenShot0012-1.jpg

I figure that it'll come in handy once I have the Redentor up and running for my stints in Universal Suffrage. Even though, now that I think about it, most of what I build from here on out will be close to single-turn builds or Projects which can't be rushed. Ah, well. Like they always say, you can never have too many Spy GPP...

Oh, and we must have been doing something right. In 1625, I learned that a certain Virgin Queen lost her shiny capital:

Civ4ScreenShot0013.jpg

Maybe it had collapsed a couple of turns before. I have no idea. I really wish I could get a message of some sort. It's kind of creepy how my borders are an utterly silent killer. Even I don't know when I land the death blow.

Anyway, we earned a semi-cool event:

Civ4ScreenShot0014-1.jpg

Well, the choice was a no-brainer. With a National Park, we won't be building a Coal Plant. I wasn't really planning on building a Drydocks, either, but if we can scam an extra two hammers out of it, well, why not. It'll make a reasonable idle time build. And maybe we can get that Experienced Captain event with it.

Our intrepid Zeppelineers, meanwhile, saw India ravaged by war:

Civ4ScreenShot0015-1.jpg

So much for a Defensive Pact with Gandhi. He hasn't buckled as of round's end, but he's not gonna win against Persia.

My troops, meanwhile, were roped into war with Spain:

Civ4ScreenShot0017-1.jpg

My good friend Joao II asked me nicely and, quite frankly, Isabella had outlived her usefulness. She was an international pariah, and my reputation was taking a hit as I refused time and again to move against her. And the last thing I wanted was for the Portuguese to take Madrid over and actually become a credible threat.

The Spanish Longbowmen fought valiantly to protect their homes (They had heard stories about Bibracte and London), but they were no match for skilled French marksmen. A dark cloud passed over the city:

Civ4ScreenShot0018.jpg

Isabella was last seen screaming for mercy as the darkness enveloped her. Think Ghost, only with everyone's favorite Iberian fanatic being dragged into hell.

She wasn't the only one to make an unceremonious exit this round:

Civ4ScreenShot0019-1.jpg

Good riddance to bad rubbish, there. Ragnar was good for nothing but a string of unreasonable demands and a steady stream of Privateers.

Oh, and you remember how Bismarck is our friend again? Well, see, he asked us to get involved in another war, and, well, this time I had the ability to help...

Civ4ScreenShot0020-1.jpg

But first, I made a quick detour up Amsterdam way:

Civ4ScreenShot0022-1.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0023.jpg

What? Willem had gone from being my friend to being Furious with me. He was no longer anywhere close to the cutting edge of technology. All he was was low-hanging fruit that would have been conquered by the Germans or the Russians sooner or later, anyway! He was nothing but a liability! Better to just let him burn with the rest!

So, yeah. With that done, my troops headed south to finish clearing off the Iberian peninsula:

Civ4ScreenShot0025-1.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0026.jpg

Okay, okay. I know what you're all saying. Joao II was pleased with us. Our culture doesn't spread that far. It'll only be resettled. Yeah, but, well, all those home guard troops needed something to do, and I was feeling cooped up. Hanging out in Paris, hitting End Turn every 30 seconds was dreadfully dull. So now we're that much closer to getting a Great General, and it didn't really cost us anything!

Oh, one other neat bit of news from our well-traveled balloon company:

Civ4ScreenShot0027-1.jpg

Wow. Talk about your flood of obsolete units! And everyone was saying that Lincoln was doomed to obscurity under the Aztec yoke. They took on Carthage itself! Not that it'll last very long, I don't think, but you've gotta admit, its cool :)

So I decided to wrap things up in 1704 with the birth of a Great Scientist in Paris:

Civ4ScreenShot0028-1.jpg

I could settle him, as usual, but I'm thinking I should save him for Standard Ethanol. I don't our borders are gonna be able to grab that North Sea oil patch, and it's a pain to trade for. And, well, Oil is pretty darn useful until the very end of the game. At the very least, I want to get some Railroads down to beef up our Mines and Quarries. In that screenshot, you can also see our garrison (significantly improved from last round; should last us quite a while) and buildings.

Here's a look at our Specialist situation:

Civ4ScreenShot0029-1.jpg

More Great Engineers would be nice. Now that that Factory is built, I think I'll switch some Priests over.

A look at the Tech Tree:

Civ4ScreenShot0030.jpg

We're still top dog, but I don't think we can count on trading for Steel. The AI tends to be something of a Nervous Nelly when it comes to handing out convenient ways for the human player to conquer them. We can trade for Divine Right, though! That tech really needs to be retooled...

Here's a look at Eurasia:

Civ4ScreenShot0034-1.jpg

Wow. Looks like Darius just got ahold of Assembly Line and he's not afraid to use it!

And the Americas:

Civ4ScreenShot0035.jpg

Not much to see here, other than poor old Sitting Bull languishing up there in Saskatchewan.

So here we stand. What do you all think? Settle the GS or wait for Plastics? Treat our troops to some Broadway shows or send them off to rearrange grouchy old Augustus' face? With Factories going up all over Persia, I don't think our Infantry are going to remain an advantage for too much longer, so maybe we should flex them while we can. Right now, I'm thinking Radio-Industrialism-Plastics and build the Redentor, an Industrial Park and a Hydro Plant. That sound good to you all? Is there something I should sneak in there? Maybe Fascism for the Great General?

I look forward, as always, to the arguments. Here' the save:

The Corporation is useless for building railroads. You get oil in the _City_ where the corporation is, but that doesn't supply it to the suburbs or the hinterlands. Its nice to build Tanks and Planes, but not for all those +1 hammers.

Huh. Fair point. In that case, does it mean that my suburbs and hinterlands will have access to Coal, even though it is verboten from Paris proper? In that case, the Corp might be wholly unnecessary.

Good question. I don't think they will have Coal, since your capitol doesn't have access to Coal. I think cities are the things that determine resource supply. But I don't know that for sure.

So why not take the coal plant event??? It gives you 4 hammers just for building it, even it would do nothing at all? With the national park in place the dry dock was less usefull with the +1:health:

Well I had coal but NP and no oil but the corp in my last OCC and I could build railroad. Not sure which one provided the materials though.

Nat park does not hinder coal railroad build. But I would make Ethanol, for the reasons you stated: Oil is very dificult to trade and tanks are very useful ( but will not be useful for rails ) :p

And the Coal plant would definitely be better , as you don't need health. Or are you going to make a killer fleet of privateers or something like that? :D

P.S When you get time, make a fort where London once was, to connect that cow without relying in English proxies. You may never know when you may need to march to Scotland :p

Yeah, you can build railroads with the national park. Pretty sure.

Still, oil will be useful for tanks for "peacekeeping" and destroyers for guarding your fishes.

Nothing wrong will killing things, you won't have much else to build there. Who else only has one city? You could go after Rome, Holy Rome (two cities), or the Irish Byzantines. Also the city locations of some civs are very interesting. Sumeria went and colonized Russia and it looks like India will be exiled to southern Australia. Hmm.

lol, Europe's a bit.. quieter.. lately ain't it? Wonder why.. :mischief: And, who killed the Vikings? I hadn't noticed who was at war with em.. Germany or Russia?

Edit: Ah nvm, looked at the world map, 'tvas the Germans.. figures! lol :viking:

Even with the NP, you can still build railroads now. The corp does nothing for that.

Should have taken the coal plant event, though, and built a coal plant anyways. Even if it didn't provide power, it would still give the +4 hammers.

Corp would be good to grab oil to build planes, tanks, and ships for defense.

Yes, of course why didn't I think of ethanol. In my mirror I beelined fission for the nuclear powered ships but that won't help you with tanks and airplanes. Coal will allow you to build railroads though so no worry there.

I'm quite interested to see how things progress on the diplomacy front. Seems like the Buddhist bloc is not such a big deal any more and the Hindus are having some success. Too bad you've yet to get Hinduism passed to you - might be nicer to have that religion sharing going on with Persia, Russia, Zara, Egypt, and others. I know that Bismark is Buddhist and might not like it if you went Hindu, but you've built such a nice deal with him it likely wouldn't matter, and the rest of the Buddhists aren't very friendly or nice these days.

Guess it's a moot point now, but you never know if Hinduism might one day be an option....

Would it be too much of a diplo hit to get rifling into Gandhi's hands or even assembly line? Perhaps it too late now anyway, but it might have helped him stave off the Persians a bit longer.

Careful with Rome - are they not a vassal of someone else? Cannot recall - maybe Zara? Don't recall if Justinian or Charlie are vassals...
