A Brave New World Part 2

All right, starting the process of updating. Things are mostly calming down I believe, with a few notable exceptions. Maybe we can have a nice, quiet "Roaring Twenties" awaiting us. Inpreparation of course for the no doubt brutal and bloody "Mayhem Thirties"

No further new orders are allowed beyond this point.I apologize for the slow speed of the udpate, but busy with other things at the same time.

Ah yes, I have been reminded. I'm working with Arian to create video reflecting the culture and history of the various nations of ABNW c. 1915-1920. If you have art or photo/photoshopped pictures you'd like to provide for said video, please post them here or on the ABNW background thread. National flags would also be greatly appreciated.

Global News Report

SOCIALIST INTERNATIONAL EMERGENCY MEETING. Mexico City, Union of Mexico. This year it was announced to the world by the German Kaiser that the Socialist Union of South America had normalized relations with the German Empire. Further reports indicated that South American advisors had assisted the Germans with their establishment of a tank corps for their military. This evidence was compounded when Germans were reported to have begun the deployment of submarines based on socialist designs into the Baltic Sea. At the urging of many socialist nations, the Third Congress of the Socialist International was called together. By the unanimous agreement of the entire body, the Socialist Union of South America was thrown out of the organization until they “retreated from their collaboration with the German government.”

OLYMPICS COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES NEXT CITIES. Copenhagen, Danish Empire. After extensive debate and research this year, the International Olympics Committee has announced the final results of in which cities the 1916 and 1920 Olympics will be held. Taking into account the recommendation of the Texan representative to spread the events between both Europe and North America, the conclusion was obvious. For the 1916 Olympics, the Danish city of Copenhagen makes the obvious choice, as they have already made extensive preparations and developments in favor of the Olympics. For 1920, the Olympics will be held in the city of Houston, providing that they can maintain order until then. Should any city or government fail to be prepared for their time for the Olympics, the default city will be Copenhagen. The city selected for the 1924 Olympics will be announced in 1916 in Copenhagen.

MAJOR NEW ADVANCEMENT IN RADIO. Amsterdam, Empire of the Netherlands. According to a Dutch researcher the radio is not merely a device for transmitting telegraph signals without cable. To the amazement of a watching crowd, he spoke the words of a Dutch poem to someone less than a mile away. Though commercial breakthrough in the field of radio may be a ways away, people have easily noted the military applications of the new technology, particularly at sea.

North American News Report

CHICAGO ELECTIONS. Chicago, Free City of Chicago. This year’s elections in Chicago have been relatively peaceful, as the Conservative Party campaigns on the position of the status quo. They have also offered to open up doors to black immigration from Tennessee and Virginia, as the Ku Klux Klan gains more power in those two nations. The opposing Liberal Party has barely maintained any seats in the City Council, and the Conservatives have easily held the majority and the mayor’s office. (+1 Stability)

RACE RIOTS IN GEORGIA. Atlanta, Georgia. In the wake of the war, there has been much printing and publishing blaming the Georgian black community for the disasters of the Gulf War. The lack of elections this year as Philip Wright remains in charge of the nation sparked protests by immigrants and blacks within the larger cities of Georgia. In response the Ku Klux Klan militias mobilized and attacked the protests. Armed themselves, the blacks fought back and the military was called in to “maintain order in the Negro communities.” Some light fighting took place in a few cities. (-1 Infantry Brigade, -1 Stability)

RIOTS ERUPT IN DESERET. Bringhamton, Deseret. Riots broke out this year in the largest towns and cities of the nation of Deseret. Non-Mormon population have rioted against the theocracy, decrying the lack of rights for the Christian community. Further riots broke out in the factories this year as the Communist Party rallies disillusioned Christians under their atheistic banner, promising a new order in the nation. Less radical workers have mobilized into unions, threatening to strike until social reform is begun.

RIOTING IN FLORIDA. Mobile, Florida. Demonstrations of the impoverished black community of the city of Mobile this year turned violent. The spark which caused this was the closing of Florida’s borders to immigrants from Georgia this year as the military patrolled the former front lines of the Gulf War. The military government of Florida has announced that it refuses to give cause for another major war in North America, and therefore “Let Georgia deal with its own negro problem.”

NEW ENGLAND ELECTIONS. Boston, Republic of New England. The escalation of the blockade in Asia and the disasters on the Chinese mainland have led to dramatic consequences at home. The Conservative Party has lost its hold on Congress and the Presidency to the Moderate Party. The moderates, while refusing to outright end fighting in Asia, have pledged to “redefine” New England’s role in securing peace in China and victory for the republican government there. The new government has suggested that it will be taking a foreign policy route more local to the New Englander nation, hoping for improved consolidation of the state of New York into the republic. (-1 Stability)

NEW FRANCE ELECTIONS. New Caen, Republic of New France. This year’s elections in New France focused primarily on domestic concerns, and the Socialist Party’s “honeymoon” with the people of the republic is clearly over. Though the Socialist Party did managed to keep the Consulship, they have lost a significant amount of Congress to the Moderates and Liberals. They have pledged to finally make good on social reform within New France, including “in the cities and in the fields.”

UNREST IN METIS REPUBLIC. Winnipeg, Metis Republic. The growing German influence in the North American nation of the Metis Republic has been met with opposition. Various German merchants and businessmen were attacked by mobs in anti-German riots in various towns and cities in the republic. The pro-French outlook remains in much of the country, and to some, a deal with Germany is a deal with the very devil himself.

ATTEMPTED COUP IN TEXAS. Houston, Texan Republic. An ambitious Texan general attempted to seize power on his own in the Texan Republic this year. Leading a small force into Houston, he seized several government buildings including Congressional Hall. The President of the republic was able to escape and rally a small force to retake the city. Fresh recruits were brought in for heavy fighting and met extensive fire from the general’s veterans. The city was badly damaged in the fighting and military casualties were heavy. (-3 Infantry Brigades)

GULF WAR ENDS. Boston, Republic of New England. To the relief of millions the Gulf War ended this year between the Gulf Alliance and the nation of Georgia. Both sides achieved victories in the peace treaty, to the surprise of outside observers. Georgia has gained its long awaited access to the Gulf of Mexico, while the Gulf Alliance wrested the last colony of Georgia, the island of Jamaica, away. The end of the war has seen some turmoil in both Georgia and the alliance, but so far the prewar governments have managed to remain intact.

TENNESSEE CIVIL WAR. Nashville, Tennessee. The war for control of the nation of Tennessee has taken a dramatic turn. King Edward has announced his abdication from the throne of Tennessee in favor of the establishment of a republic. The Ku Klux Klan has agreed to reconciliation with the monarchist forces in an attempt to destroy the Negro People’s Republic of the Tennessee. Initial attacks against the rebels have met with failure, as they spent the time that the whites were consolidating to build up their arms and defenses, occupying several pre-war munitions factories. The blacks managed to hold back initial offensives and have even attacked on their own against Memphis. The city fell after extensive fighting, and the locals fled in the wake of feared black retaliation due to the Klan’s attacks. Atrocities remain common throughout the war as blacks attack whites and vice versa.
Casualty List
People’s Republic of the Tennessee: 32 Infantry Brigades, 2 Artillery Brigades
Tennessee: 28 Infantry Brigades, 1 Artillery Brigade

COMMUNISTS SEIZE POWER IN LAKOTA. Geronimo, Commune of the Lakota People. After several years of turmoil, the Commune of the Lakota People has secured control of the city of Geronimo as the king flees the country. A new communist dictatorship has been established, imitating the existing government of the Union of Mexico. The new government has promised a new era for the Sioux, and a complete reformation of the nation.

Central/South American News Report

COUP ATTEMPT IN CHILE. Santiago, Chile. Rapid anti-communist military leaders have made another bid for power in Chile, launching an attempt to take power through force. Heavy fighting took place within Santiago and various other cities as republican loyalists fought to hold back military control. Casualties were incredibly heavy in the urban fighting, leaving city blocks devastated after nearly a month of fighting. However, the Chilean government has restored order, though the nation rests temporarily under martial law. (-18 Infantry Brigades, +1 Stability, -1 EP)

A NEW REGIME IN SUSA. Rio de Janeiro, Socialist Union of South America. Riots broke out this year as the Socialist Party Congress met in Rio de Janeiro. Crowds hoped to influence the decision of the next Chairman of the Party, the effective leader of the Socialist Union of South America. Many feared that the new agreements with the German Imperial Protectorate may result in a reenslavement of the Brazilian proletariat to the German Empire. Mobs attacked the German ambassador when he attempted to return to the nation’s embassy, and several casualties were had as the emissary’s kommando security detail did its best to hold them off. The ambassador was thrown back on his ship with his men after being severely beaten. Witnessing all of this and with the expulsion from the Socialist International, the Party Congress turned to Jose Batlle y Ordonez, a fiery demagogue who frequently preaches in support of global revolution. Ordonez was approved as the new Party leader, and many hope that he will be able to restore stability to the Union. (-2 Stability)

JAMAICA, THEY HAVE A GOVERNMENT. Kingston, Jamaica. With the signing of the Treaty of Boston, a compromise was reached in which the governments of the Gulf Alliance agreed to hold a plebiscite to determine Jamaica’s fate. After heated debate the people announced their intentions for an independent government for the island nation, rather than being part of the Empire of Haiti. To this end a republic has been established under the guidance of Texas, though this remains a subject of some debate. The Socialist and Communist parties have been outlawed under the new constitution, which has angered a limited amount of the populace. The first full domestic elections will be held after extensive campaigning in 1914.

European News Report

TROUBLE AVERTED IN CELTIC UNION. Dublin, Celtic Union. Though the end of the war has assisted in the nation’s return to stability, elements of the military have attempted to use the chaotic return of the armies to establish their own control over the government. However, loyalist forces to the republic have managed to suppress the uprising in heavy fighting. Some fighting took place on the front lines where military commanders attempted to take full control of the civil authority, while others moved to gain control in Cork, Dublin, and Glasgow. Republican authorities have managed to rally the majority of the troops in their favor, and the rebellious commanders have been arrested. Despite the turmoil, elections were held this year as scheduled. In response to the “conservative warmongering” and the attempted military coup, the nation’s Socialist Party has achieved victory, securing both the Presidency and Congress. The new government has promised not only reform of the military to discourage further “reactionary aggression against democracy” but closer ties with other foreign powers to prevent further attacks from outside alliances such as the North Sea Alliance. (-2 Stability)
Casualty List

DANISH ELECTIONS. Copenhagen, Danish Empire. The Dansk Konservative Folkepartei won reelection this year, though once more the election has been closely fought. The Dansk Fremskridtspartiet has made a hearty bid for power this year, securing a much larger part of Parliament. This is heavily attributed to their bids for isolation from further affairs, fearing that the alliance with Germany is not much more than an attempt to further German imperial control over Europe. They have continues to rally more supporters to their cause as liberals and socialists alike fall behind an anti-German banner. (-1 Stability)

ENGLISH ELECTIONS. London, England. For the first time since the beginning of the Anglo-Celtic War, Parliament has held elections for the House. The rise of anti-war sentiment and the turmoil within the nation has led to an overwhelming sweep of the Socialist Party into offices across the country. The new prime minister is a major socialist, noted for his attendance of both the First and Second Socialist International Congresses. The new government has pledged to forge England into a people’s industrial powerhouse in Europe, pledging not only to improve working conditions but also to demobilize further brigades and raise the national economy. This has of course met with heated resistance from the right wing, particularly the military officer corps and career soldiers. Some have begun threatening a coup against Parliament should the new prime minister not immediately resign and new elections be held. (-2 Stability)

PORTUGUESE ELECTIONS. Lisbon, Portugal. The Portuguese, as the economy soars, have once more begun awakening to the idea of political power for their nation. The Conservative Party has promised a new dawn for the Portuguese colonial empire, and pledged a new course for the country. To this end they have been elected into the nation’s government for the first time in over three decades. This victory is believed to have been the cause of Portugal’s erupting involvement in the fighting against Korea in Asia, perhaps illuminating a rise of a second Portuguese empire. (+1 Stability)

ITALY ELECTIONS. Rome, Republic of Italy. The Presidency of Italy and Congress continue to be vastly dominated by the popular Repubblicani Leali. This Party has continued to capitalize from its successful unification of all of Italy and their economic success since the war. The more leftist elements of politics have continued to fail to establish any sort of control or balance in the government, turning upon themselves. They have clearly lost their way to the Italian people, who will certainly continue their support of the conservative government. (+2 Stability)

TRANSYLVANIA ELECTIONS. Blaj, Transylvania. Following last year’s establishment of a republic under the guidance of the Russian Imperial Federation, Transylvania’s first free elections were held this year. Guiding the debate of the various candidates was the recent establishment of the Balkan League and the fighting which has commenced along Transylvania’s very borders. The Moderate Party has taken charge of the government, combining Conservative promises of security with Liberal promises of reconstruction. They have pledged to take a “defensive course” in the ongoing conflict. (+2 Stability)

COUP IN SERBIA. Belgrade, Serbia. Despite the military success of holding the Danube River, elements of the military have attempted to take political matters into their own hands in Serbia. Russian supporters attempted to seize the capital of Belgrade and proclaim the new “Republic of Serbia.” They were quickly and easily suppressed by the Royal Guard, who called out extensive forces to crush the revolt. (-1 Infantry Brigade)

END OF THE WAR IN BRITAIN. London, England. After years of conflict, the nations of the Celtic Union and England have signed a peace treaty at pre-war borders. This has resulted in much turmoil in both countries as seen with the recent elections of socialist majorities to both governments. The war was costly in Britain, which saw the bulk of the fighting, and it may take some time before the islands are fully recuperated from the conflict.

FRENCH CIVIL WAR. Paris, France. Heavy fighting took place this year as the factions of France fought for dominance. The largest battle to take place resulted from a socialist drive to secure Paris from the imperialists. Heavy city fighting resulted as the socialists attempted to press into the town. Fighting has raged throughout the year in the neighborhoods and factories of northern Paris, but so far the imperialist regime has managed to keep the city secure. In the south, as the imperialists remain distracted by the socialist attacks, the Lisist movement has managed to take Bordeaux and advance north against minimal imperialist resistance. Some imperialist troops have been brought in to retain control of Spain, securing the passes across the Pyrenees against Lisist advance.
Casualty List
Imperialist France: 27 Infantry Brigades, 2 Artillery Brigades, 3 Armored Car Brigades
Socialist France: 34 Infantry Brigades, 3 Artillery Brigades, 4 Armored Car Brigades, 1 Tank Brigade
Lisist France: 7 Infantry Brigades

THE BALKANS WAR. Kiev, Russian Imperial Federation. The Russian government, in response to the declarations of the Balkan League, have announced their recognition of nonexistent republican regimes in all three nations. The Russian army has been brought in to invade the region, attacking on all fronts. They suffered a major defeat on the Danube River attempting to push into Belgrade, where well prepared Serbian forces slaughtered attempts to cross. Heavy casualties were inflicted at very minor Serbian expense. A similar defeat was had at the hands of the Moldavians, who managed to prevent Russian attacks into southern Iasi, though the government was withdrawn to Bucharest for its safety. Russian attempts to press from the west met with much more success, but the rough terrain and harsh resistance have prevented major advances. In the south, the Bulgarians launched a major attack against Russian positions in Constantinople, only to be bloodily repulsed. The Russians used the local fleet to effectively provide heavy support for ground forces against the attackers.
Casualty List
Russian Empire: 37 Infantry Brigades, 7 Artillery Brigades
Bulgaria: 19 Infantry Brigades, 3 Artillery Brigades
Serbia: 2 Infantry Brigades
Moldavia: 18 Infantry Brigades

African/Middle Eastern News Report

SUEZ WAR. Ankara, Ottoman Empire. Initial combat in the year came as a surprise for the coalition, and the Arabs were reeled back by attacks in January. Divided by their own differences, the Arabs were driven out of Riyadh, and thrown back into the deserts. Heavy fighting came to a major peak this year in the Middle East as Ottoman forces launched a massive offensive against the coalition forces in Palestine. Assembling a surprising force with massive amounts of artillery and other arms, the Ottomans managed to assemble the army without the enemy suspecting. After moving up the infantry over nightfall, the Ottomans opened the offensive in February with a massive and sudden artillery barrage upon Dutch positions. Initial Dutch positions were forced back under the intense assault. The Ottomans managed to push into range of the city of Jerusalem, but Virginian forces were brought in for a counter-attack and managed to secure the lines. In the east the Virginians launched several smaller offensives against weaker Ottoman forces, after light bombardment of enemy positions and Baghdad using the zeppelin forces. Some feel that victory may only be a matter of time for the coalition, particularly with the arrival of a large German army in Egypt.
Casualty List
Ottoman Empire: 61 Infantry Brigades, 21 Artillery Brigades
Egypt: 17 Infantry Brigades
Virginia: 21 Infantry Brigades, 8 Artillery Brigades, 1 Tank Brigade
Netherlands: 34 Infantry Brigades, 5 Artillery Brigades
Arab Federation: 8 Infantry Brigades

LIBERIAN ELECTIONS. Forsythville, Liberia. This year’s elections were once more hotly disputed, particularly as the nation fell under even greater pressure from outside. Over the past year, several documents were published by socialist newsletters showing Danish attempts to enforce a protectorate over the nation of Liberia. Protests were rallied against this, and much to the socialists’ chagrin, the Liberal Party has managed to ride this wave to overwhelming victory. The Liberals have pledged to keep the nation from “Danish tyranny” and prevent a repetition of Danish atrocities against the Zulu in Liberia. (+2 Stability)

RIOTS BRING CHANGE IN NOVA BRAZIL. Porto Pedro, Nova Brazil. Brazilian refugees rioted this year against Germany due to their de facto recognition of the Socialist Union of South America. The German embassy was attacked and stoned, leading to the Emperor of Brazil proclaiming the nation’s withdrawal from the German Imperial Protectorate. Pedro III has stated that the Kaiser has truly lost his way for the Brazilian cause, and that change will have to come from another source to restore the empire. Rumors have risen that Pedro III may turn to the Portuguese branch of the family in the hopes of regaining the throne of Brazil. (+4 Stability)

Asian/Pacific News Report

WAR CONTINUES IN CHINA. Hong Kong, Republic of New England. To the surprise of many, it was possible for the war in China to escalate even further. New Englander and Swedish forces have directly intervened in the mainland war, sending ground troops into China. To the south, the Koreans were well prepared for the involvement of the Indochinese Expeditionary Force, and they have set up numerous hidden positions and forts within the jungles and mountains. The New Englanders suffered horrendous casualties pushing through the region, and got increasingly bogged down. They were bailed out only by a massive republican attack from the north, which took advantage of the distraction caused by the New Englanders. In late December, the Swedes launched their first offensive into mainland China, also hitting heavy defenses. However, the sheer number of Swedish forces brought in overwhelmed the garrison. In conjunction with earlier republican attacks and Swedish naval efforts on the Yangtze River, the river was used to decisively cut Korean possessions in China in half. In the north the Korean army smashed another republican army in heavy fighting around Zhengzhou, coming to the relief of the imperial government. In the wake of this victory, the imperial government managed to push further southwest, retaking lost territory from the retreating republican army.
Casualty List
Republican China: 103 Infantry Brigades, 9 Cavalry Brigades, 8 Artillery Brigades
New England: 32 Infantry Brigades, 5 Cavalry Brigades, 6 Artillery Brigades
Swedish Empire: 7 Infantry Brigades, 1 Artillery Brigade
Korean Empire: 92 Infantry Brigades, 12 Cavalry Brigades, 10 Artillery Brigades
Imperial China: 11 Infantry Brigades

THE UNDECLARED WAR HAS TURNED DECLARED. Nanjing, Swedish Empire. After several years of limited fighting at sea, the blockade has been greatly escalated by the allies. Swedish, New Englander, and Portuguese ground troops have been sent against the Koreans in their possessions outside of China. The blockade remains intact as Portuguese and New Englander zeppelins maintain a watch on the seas. However, Koreans have learned from last year and have managed to reduce the number of casualties upon their merchant marine. Despite this, the blockading fleet continues to hit around 40-50% of the enemy shipping into China, including numerous escort destroyers as the bigger ships begin turning their firepower upon the light escorting warships rather than the merchant vessels. The New Englanders launched the first offensive effort against Korea’s non-Chinese possessions, taking the island of Jeju-do. The surprise appearance of coastal fortifications and lack of real reconnassaince by the New Englanders nearly led to disaster. The small garrisoning force was able to use local heavy guns to destroy two of the larger support ships as well as inflicting heavy casualties upon the invaders. To the east, the Portuguese and Swedes launched a full invasion of Kyushu, surprising the local Korean army. Through sheer numbers and a lack of any significant army to oppose them, the Portuguese have establish control over the major centers of the islands. This control seems unwieldy though as the hillsides continue to seethe in rebellion by rural Japanese partisans. Even Seoul itself felt the effects of the war this year as New Englander zeppelins managed to launch a barebones raid against the Korean capital, bombing several factories. This force met with disaster on their return trip however, as Korean attempts eventually brought the entire squadron down before they could return to their bases.
Casualty List
Korean Empire: 6 Infantry Brigades, 1 Artillery Brigade, 7 Destroyers
New England: 4 Infantry Brigades, 1 Destroyer, 2 Heavy Cruisers, 1 Zeppelin Bomber Squadron
Swedish Empire: 2 Infantry Brigades
Portugal: 6 Infantry Brigades, 1 Destroyer

The loss of stability and the impossibility of enforcing a protectorate status on Liberia is a really bad thing, although the fact that the Games will be held in Copenhagen and having the IOC HQ there as well is heartening, at least. I hope that my new project will do what it is supposed to do, and not make me lose EP or something like that...

The accusations of any atrocity committed by our country in the old Zulu Empire are completely false. That only happened in the territories conquered by the French Empire, as their soldiers were fired up after the French loss in the last war and took it against the Zulus. Despite the encounter between our own nation and that of the Zulus in the past, all civilians that behaved were well treated.
