Okay guys, so my last immortal game with JC on that 30 civ map has to be discontinued due to me deleting the save!

I decided to play another game after re-installing Beyond the Sword, but I haven't yet installed the unofficial patch that enables me to use 50 civs. Instead, I thought about just going with a Huge map with 18 civ to make the game easier on my computer. I decided on these settings for my third immortal game here on the forums, and the fourth overall (the other being the Gandhi deity game - and for that game I DID salvage the savegame files on my USB so I can play it out! Yay!) on these forums.

Basically, it's Julius Caesar again on an immortal Big and Small map with 18 civs (with low sea level so there's plenty of space to expand). I have Choose Religions and No Huts enabled. All other options have not been checked.

Now, some of you might scream at me and say "Why play this game if you'll just use praets to stomp everyone and you'll win easily ... etc etc etc?!?"

Well, take a look at this start I rolled.

It looks like I'll need your help here. :goodjob: I can probably get the first round done tonight. At least Julius Caesar starts with fishing so I think it's clear to start with one work boat right off the bat. Do I go with one work boat, or two? The former lets me build a worker sooner, but I doubt that the worker will have much to do, given the situation. Also, keep in mind that Julius Caesar starts with Fishing and Mining. Should I make a diversion to Hunting as my first tech? Hunting leads to Animal Husbandry so I can get that sheep pastured. As for Bronze Working and Iron Working, I think I'll hold off those for a while.

Two work boats first, since it would help you in growing an teching fast, and I still think Mininig > BW, since you would have a surplus of food for building workers and settlers from slavery and keep forest for the buildings or military units.

Hunting->AH is obvious imo on this map. Why are you playing immortal games with Julius when you already won a deity game with a lesser leader. You'll win with your eyes closed here really.

I'm assuming he's playing it for fun :p. A lot of players dodge the top civ/leader combos because they're "too good', but sometimes a good stomping can be a nice diversion.

I completely agree with hunting ----> AH. Improve your specials and start settling!

So I guess I have to decide between Hunting - AH and Mining - BW. I already had Hunting - AH in my mind before this and after going over the start, it made more sense to go that way.

I'm playing for fun ... that's the point of civ! :) Also, don't forget that I took a bit of a hiatus so I'm breaking back in the game. After this game I might go to deity with JC or some other leader.

By the way, I've never won a game as Julius Caesar yet (in BtS) ... this is hopefully my first.

@TMIT, Agree, it's just me. Once i can compete more or less successfully on a level i can't go back to a level below because the challenge is gone for me, i know i'll win so why play? For me the challenge and fun of a game is the uncertainty if i'll win or not.So i'm stuck on deity or immortal with restrictions forever.

Sometime taking a easy game is really enjoyable and relaxed when you feel tired of those tense and challenging games.

Hmm, I'd probably send the warrior north.

For the start.
I'd prefer Mining->BW here.
WB->WB(Whip in the end of size2)->Worker is my 1st thought.

Why is everyone saying Mining-BW if Julius already starts with Mining? :P I say go BW-Hunting-AH and build WB-Worker-WB(chop?)-Settler. After that either go for IW if a rush seems likely or get to Alphabet if not.

Doesn't really matter I guess, although getting BW first will let you know where Copper is so you can plan out better(I guess it depends how early you build a settler though), and the only hill you can mine, besides the fur, has trees on it.

I played for awhile and got a second city running(I didn't change difficulty, even though I only play on Prince, I wanted to see how tough Immortal really is). Everythings going good, I even manage to get a warrior in each of my cities. Then bam, two archers and a warrior come plowing through Antium, taking it without much trouble.

How the hell do you deal with these barbs while still expanding at a normal rate?

i am not really sure in place is best....

previous suggestion on sheep is an option and moving on fur is a gamble which might pay off..

Not that any of these would be clearly better...

Settling on the sheep IS an option. I don't want to go up on the furs, though.

The thing with settling on the sheep is that I get a 3 hammer tile INSTANTLY (forested plains hill), which will let me get the first workboat out faster. Also, it takes advantage of those other grassland tiles which would seem to go to waste if I settle in place.

EDIT: I'm actually in favor of settling on the sheep. Later on, I can get a lighthouse in Rome and that lake can become a 3 food, 2 commerce tile. Or I can settle on the forest south of my settler, though that does waste a turn and a 2F tile. I'll do some simulations.

You'll find out. ;)

I wouldn't settle on the sheep, it's a 5 yield tile and the returns on settling on it are low. Yes, you gain some grassland, but with 5 good tiles to work early on you won't get any benefit immediately. This will never be a supercommerce awesome bureau capital for the win, so why waste a perfectly good 5Y tile to gain some grassland you can surely claim with a second city. If there's seafood near the furs to the east, and there usually is plenty of seafood near the poles (or is that just my imagination), that would make for a decent citysite as well.

An improved sheep is 4 food and 1 hammer, right? Oh and there does seem to be seafood (mainly crabs and awful whales) near the poles quite often.

Looks like I have some decision making to do. My first instinct was to settle in place and tech Hunting - AH, so these are just other options.

I'm going to play the round ... now.
