Stalin (Industrious-Deity Series)

After many months from a break of Civ IV, I ended up burning off a couple hours last night giving Stalin a go. So here will be the results of that. The only difference from the other maps in this series is that I decided to go back to the Fractal standard, as I think we've done enough Archi. maps to last another year.

Waiting already, you should do YouTube videos of these also.
:D
Great!

Turn 0
Spoiler :

After some deliberation, I decided to stall a turn while I move one spot East.

Turn 0-10
Spoiler :

We run into Ragnar on turn #6. Oh oh… Time now where the weaker players give up and re-roll for a new map :p

Then on turn 9, we run into Washington.

I am happy about one thing so far, I see a marble patch off in the distance that I may be able to get. And if I do, the AI’s are going to have no chance against me this game.

Turn 10-20

No shots, so nothing interesting happened.

Turn 20-30
Spoiler :

Oh ohh, looks like my scout stopped movement in front of a barb, of all places. Oh well, easy come.. Easy go. At least I was able to scout a little bit of terrain before the R.I.P. moment. Unfortunately, no money and no techs popped.

Turn 30-40
Spoiler :

Here we are, Gold City. Not much food about, but it should be ok for our needs. Good chance to build the S. Paya here, and get a little extra commerce early. Anyhow, don’t worry about the barbs, they’ll never break my warriors. I always laugh when I see people researching and building archers, it’s a huge waste of a tech.

Turn 40-50
Spoiler :

On turn 45 we met Gilga. Or he met us actually. I guess this spells more trouble for us in the near future….

Well, so far there is still only one religion, so looks like we may end up converting to Hindu shortly down the road if things don’t change.

Turn 50-60
Spoiler :

I wasn’t sure what to call this city, but since it’s in a desert area, that name is self-explanationable. I definitely think these 2 city sites, including my capital are good enough for running a cultural victory again, so I’m not even going to care about rushing out other cities, though I’ll still try and get 3 more to get my magic number of 6 just to be safe.

And on turn 60, looks like Ragnar finally Dows on Washington. I was wondering how long that would take…

Turn 60-70
Spoiler :

We end up nabbing the Oracle here. To be honest, I really wasn’t counting on it, but I often do take a stab at it in many of my games for the chance it does come in on deity. This seems to be one of the times where it hit off for us again. After some debating, I decided to take Monarchy, since it was the most costly tech to chose from.

On turn 65 we met up with Ramesses. Looks like we will have a rough time trying to nab wonders here…

Turn 70-80
Spoiler :

Gilga decides to DoW on Washington too now… hmm

And after I trade a lot of techs to Rammy, I decide to found my marble city. Ragnar beat me to a spot, and this puts my placement in a terrible place now, but I have no choice. I don’t care if this will be a crappy city for the whole game, I just want to take that marble patch for myself.

Turn 80-90
Spoiler :

Well, one more city. At least this one has 2 food sources, which sure beats having ZERO! So I think the name fits it rather well.

Now… that gives me 1 city short for my projection-line.

As soon as masonry is in, that worker gets that marble patch online.

Turn 90-100
Spoiler :

Nothing much, did some more improvements, got my iron up, and now have a few swords and axe-men ready to capture a barb city so I can have my final one. It seems, those pesky barbs happened to found one in time to beat one of my settlers. So we’ll just have to settle the score in a violent way.

And… since I was lazy, I decided to make this deal, even though it may seem pretty stupid. The problem is I can’t get Alphabet from him instead, so it’s this or nothing.

Couldn't give Monarchy and Meditation for Alphabet?

Excited the series is back on. :D

Edit: Came back cause I have to say this:

Yea! Obsolete isn't going obsolete! :p

-------------------------------------------
Turn 100-110

Spoiler :

On turn 102 we convert to Hinduism, leaving only Rammy to Jewdiasm.

And at the end of our turn-set, we capture that pesky barb city up north. Now we have our 6 cities, so what to do with my extra settler is a good question.

Also, Ragnar came and DEMANDED Aesthetics. Oh well, I guess we’ll give him that too. And to think I was being so nice, and even built an army, it seems there just isn’t any pleasing deity Ais.

Turn 110-120
Spoiler :

On #112 we popped a GP, one of my favourites. So of course I settled him.

And on turn #114 we put the last hammer into the Parthenon. This time I Actually don’t mind the pesky artist pollution.

However, there would be no chance in hell of getting TGL here, the Americans built it around 450 BC already, despite I slowed down their tech race a lot by the Oracle. It looks like even BtS deitys can still run away on you, EVEN when fighting multiple other Ais. Now that’s pretty sick.

I think I’ll have to take a world-builder look at this map over when we are done to see what the hell is happening here.

Anyhow, just to show what I did with the settler, here I marched him up north to a spot that would piss off Gilga. Then after founding it, I gifted it to Washington, so it would become a useless city that gets him even more upset at Gilga. And of course I’ll be best friends now with the Wonder-Racer.

Unfortunately this didn’t last long, as Washington gifted it back to Gilga.

Anyhow, Gilga then gave me Alphabet for free :p

Turn 120-130
Spoiler :

At the beginning of this turn-set we completed the NE in the capital. I would have completed the SoZ in there too last turn-set, but I lost the race to someone. That’s alright, because this is how I got so much gold. (Who needs cottages anyway?)

On turn 130 Rammy built the AP. Unfortunately that’s the one religion I can not run where I am without getting into trouble.

As for my sister cities, I completed the S. Paya in Gold-City. So, thing’s are coming long decently so far.

Turn 130-140
Spoiler :

We pop a GA on #135, and settle him in Desert City.

Anyhow, I really liked this turn-set best of all because we completed the Sistine Chapel. This will make our work even easier.

On #140, Ragnar converts to Taoism. Ughh, just great. Oh well, that’s what out S. Paya was for.. Just this kind of emergency, so we switch to FR.

Turn 140-150
Spoiler :

On 144 Washington gifted Civil Service. The sad part is we were only 2 turns away from researching it! Ughhh. Oh well, it’s better than nothing (usually). I’m not used to seeing techs like this gifted so early, but Washington already built the UoS about a hundred years ago already, so what does he care. He’s just spiraling out of control from the get-go.

And of course, he also wins Liberalism. Though I’m not sure why he didn’t do it much sooner. Perhaps he did one of those Zara-deteours. I wasn’t paying too much attention because it really didn’t concern us anymore.

Turn 150-160
Spoiler :

We pop another GA to settle this set. Nothing else exciting went on, except for Ragnar re-declaring on Washington again, and then Rammy gets bribed against Ragnar. This doesn’t look good for Ragnar, considering I had to gift him my army last time around, just to try and stall his cities from all falling.

Turn 160-170
Spoiler :

This really was a sad turn-set for Ragnar. So aside from him losing a couple cities, here’s a shot just to show that I was desperately trying to trade and gift everything else I could to the poor lad.

Turn 170-180
Spoiler :

A stop-the-war event resolution for the AP came up. But it made no difference, since Rag just vassaled to Washington anyway. Oh well, the monster is turning into a giant now.

The good news, is I popped another GP to settle.

Turn 180-190

Nothing exciting at all to show, except for another vote for AP election winner.

Oh, but I did complete the Hermitage in Desert city.
-ni
Turn 190-200
Spoiler :

We switch to Free Speech, and then are met by Hannibal and Monte. Hmmmm!

Also, there was a war going on, but Rammesses got a GET-OUT-OF-IT-FREE card with his AP. So Gilga is still left holding the bag.

Could you post a save? It would be interesting to see how you manage your tiles/cities.

Also, it seems you're going for a culture victory. I would probably see that as the only viable victory condition anyway with that monster in your back door. Do you ever go straight up domination/conquest? That I'd love to see. Or even space.

Archery isn't useful on your map, since you don't have much land. On a map with much more land around you, archery would be priority #2 (1st is to find out if there is either copper or horses - if not, then go to archery). Of course, this is when you're not Huayna Capac.

I used to go Space 99% of the time, but people started complaining about the same thing over and over, so I have been branching out a little more now.

As for any monsters in the backdoor, I figured that would probably happen, but it doesn't concern us too much. The problem is the AI is just so utterly stupid, it' doesn't even attack when it knows it will certainly lose to a culture vic if it doesn't. I still don't understand why someone would design such a bad AI. But I have no problems taking advantage of this nonsense :p

I'll post saves at the end like I always do.

Branching out by doing culture?

In part, for the same reason that the AI doesn't immediately declare war on your empty city on turn 5, or order all of it's citizens/workers to commit ritual suicide when a nation is doomed to conquest, or... or... or....

Sure, the designers could have instead decided to pit the human player against a conspiracy of paranoid spoilsports. Might not have done so much for sales, though.

That said, the AI is also utterly stupid. The moral of the story is "Don't think with dice".

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Turn 200-210

Spoiler :

A few cities are swapped back and forth. Meanwhile I just go around spreading a bit more of Taosim, and then try and steal a tech here or there.

At the end this turn-set, everyone makes peace again, so we are all happy friends again.

Turn 210-220

Spoiler :

We pop another great priest to settle, and then Washington asks us for a defense pact. Well how can I refuse?

And then he gifts me military tradition.

Turn 220-230

Spoiler :

We pop another GA for settling (desert city should be the target now). We are really going to pop them out now.. Guess I went into full Pacifism-SE mode here.

Few other minor details not worth much mentioning…

Turn 230-240

Spoiler :

Nothing to really show this set. Just some more backstabbing went on and Gilga is attacking another continent it seems.

Turn 240-250

Spoiler :

We pop yet another GA to settle.

Turn 250-260

Spoiler :

On turn #254 we pop a Great Scientist. The problem, is that the way this game is going, I don’t have much use for scientists, at least not at this later stage. So I decided to burn it away by running a golden age.

This leads to another great priest in just 4 more turns. This one I’ll settle.

Turn 260-270

Spoiler :

Washington and Ragnar DoW on Gilga, haha.

I also had to give in to a demand by Monte, and then defy a UN resolution.

But my favourite part, is seeing how bad I am crippling one of Rag’s cities with some of my culture. It’s totally surrounded.

Turn 270-280

Spoiler :

Here I am snooping around to see what’s being brought in with the current war.

I also end up popping another GA this set, and then Gilga’s gold jumps up. A lot. We are talking over 2000 of gold. I have a feeling I know what happened there :p

Turn 280-290

Spoiler :

Surprise, Gilga made peace with Washington, and then I was able to renew my defense pact.

I popped another GP for settling (yes, even at this later stage). And here is a quick rundown of how the current races look like.

Turn 290-300

Spoiler :

Secretary G. tried to win through diplomatic victory, haha. But that’s not going to happen just yet.

I ended up popping another GA here, and I sure ran enough artists to do so. I’m starving myself down in fact.

Usually I prefer my capital to have more wonders and settled specialists, but because of the current victory path, I’ve been spreading them around quite a bit.

Turn 300-304
Spoiler :

Well, there really was not much to show for this wrap-up, so here’s our victory screen from turn #303. Looks like the Egyptians are another 20 turns behind us again in the culture race. Isn’t that a shame?

Needless to say, at the start of the next turn it was all over.

So now.. I was ABLE to finally see that whole culture-victory ending-movie from start to finish. Ahhhhh….

And so.. Here’s the saves.

Thanks Obsolete, I just registered to tell you that your threads are great.

I found the lack of cheering comments disturbing, so I decided to end my small 'only lurking' period.

I am a little shy though, lurking Civfanatics since the beginning of Civ 2 Vanilla. :p

Obsolete, I'm kind of new to civ4 and I always hear about your WE/SSE economy. I took a look at your walkthroughs but it's nearly impossible to follow without the pictures. Do you still have them? In case you don't, are you willing to post a WE/SSE walkthrough/tutorial or whatever? In this industrious series you seem to go a little easy with the wonders...

^agreed, another SSE/WE pronto! :D

Also, didn't look like you were researching much. Why not switch into mercantilism for an extra free artist? Or did the boosted trade routes from the culture slider help more?

I am a little shy though, lurking Civfanatics since the beginning of Civ 2 Vanilla.

Hmm! Quite a long time to lurk and never post. Now I wonder how many other's are doing that.

As for the older SSE/WE threads, I think I have some images still salvagable, which I MAY get around to updating in the future. We shall see. It's probably better if I just re-did them all over from scratch, but then we'd be missing out on some of the classics. Haha.

Anyhow, I didn't use Merc here because I wanted the trade-routes. In theory they SHOULD be higher, but I am not 100% sure now... routes are weaker than they used to be, and sistine adds another +2c. If only I was spiritual I could have done some easy tests to make sure.

Anyhow, this leaves only 2 industrious leaders left I believe. Actually, 1 because I spent an hour and 40 mins on the next guy already, haha. So now I'll have to post those results soon. I'll prob save the very last guy for something a little... new. Maybe winning by building no cities?

It's impressive how easy you make this look. Allthough these kind of wins do look kind of cheap to me. Well you said it yourself that the AI is incredibly stupid and you don't mind abusing it :D
I do have problems doing so tho, but that doesn't mean that if I tried I would be able to win like you do. On the contrary... I probably get smacked around. You always manage to keep yourself out of wars which is essential if you are this far behind in techs. I wonder how you do that, coz with such a powerratings I always get attacked. That's probably my lack of diplomatic skills :)
