This age old topic always cracks me up.

I have to wonder how many players pick the civ(s) they play based on WHO the civ is vs which traits/techs/uu/etc they have? Someone start a poll!

I enjoy the flavor of civ to be sure but the civs are little more than containers for game stats to me and it doesn't matter to me what the name of the civ is, or who the leader's name is.

Leader names are even less of a factor and people get worked up over that too.

I guess it's good for the game that people get so fired up over trivial details.

WTH is a jim thorpe?

WTH is a poland?

Poland.
I think they are an especially important nation in the modern era -- and should have a militaristic trait.
Honestly, France, Germany and Russia should be barred from the game in place of Poland.

And then the op argues with a Civ V lead designer that it's actually very easy to add Poland and it doesn't take that much development resources

Just because Austrailia was still wishing for electricity and running water and such at the time of Jim Thorpe doesn't mean he wasn't admired world-wide. Who knows, maybe you didn't have the written word then.

In my experience of teaching ESL, articles are one of the hardest things for non-native speakers of English to learn.

You have criticized me before for grammatical nitpicking and believe it or not, I took it to heart because generally your posts are informative and generally witty.
So, I ask you to do the same.

the best solution would be to have a civ for every country civ5 is sold in. But as the game becomes more complex, and they personalize each leader more and more each sequel, that is unlikely. At only 18 civs, and including things like speaking foreign tongue, unique buildings, units makes that entirely too difficult.

Ideally I'd like to see smaller countries like Canada and Mexico in. I think people who live in those countries would enjoy playing their own country. But with only 18 civs to choose from smaller countries just can't make it.

never heard of him till today (though I think I've heard the name mentioned once or twice). I'm not exactly a sports historian. I follow modern sports, but know little of its history before the age of television.

I wasn't actually nitpicking grammar, I was seriously "Who is Jim Thorpe?" If you ask an Australian who the greatest sportsman in the World they'll probably respond with a name like Don Bradman. I'm sure he means nothing to you.

I've also learnt not to assume that what looks like a name is a name, especially when capitalisation is not used. Thus, it could've been an object. I just didn't know.

Hey everyone, look at the guy who can't even spell "Australia".

Can I just ask how Jim Thorpe should be admired since he played professionally in two sports which at the time weren't played outside of USA (so they were not internationally recognised or even known) and also stripped of his two gold medals in the Olympics for cheating?

Are you suggesting that children of this era should look to an Olympic cheat for a role model and hero?

a similar solution could be the below modes (Similar opinions were mentioned before and there are similar official/non-official mods as well in civ4. some argued, this can be applied as dlc's for civ5 but i would prefer just having them in an EP together with other extra dynamics changes)

* ancient europe/mid east mode
* modern era mode (ww1/2 actors)
* ancient eurasia mode
* ancient world mode
* default mode
* medieval age europe mode

there will be totally ~30civs in the game but only ~15 will be available in each mod. in these modes, only the civs/leaders will be different and other game dynamics might be the same, and default rules like starting in 4000BC. some civs like germans might be IN multi-modes. and USA will be IN only default mode and modern era mode. and egypt will not fight the USA except the default mode. only in default mode, they will have show together. similarly maya/china won't show together.

what advantage does this to the developers? it will require more coding than standart 15civs but at least it will require less code work than having 30 in total. we know each civ will have a unique flavor in civ5. 15 flavors will be enough for this.

for ex: default mode will have china while medieval age europe mode will have poland. so they could just adopt default mode china's flavor to poland. only the UB and leader gfx will be different.

You started by nitpicking someone's grammar with your "WTH is a Poland"? crack. Thinking that funny for some inexplicable reason, you decided to use it again with Jim Thorpe.

You know very well what you were doing. It wasn't funny the first time and it certainly wasn't the second.

The first time I used a common internet meme ("WTH is a ______") against another internet meme (Poland should be in Civ). The second time I just didn't know who/what the subject was. You would be better not to assume what I was saying, and just ask me.
