SLYNES - Swirly Lights Yonder, a Never Ending Story

Awesome stories, everyone! :)

Still waiting on a few sets of orders, namely Lord_Iggy and TaylorFlame, and if I don't get them... terrible things will happen...

Anyone else that hasn't sent orders yet, please do. It's just that those two are as easy to NPC.

Update is progressing smoothly, for the orders I've received so far. Pressing on to the NPCs and then moving on to NPCing the active ones I haven't gotten orders for. There are a few players that I've been wishing for a little more activity from, to be honest, but unfortunately it isn't so!

System F/H-T

Horj and Glom watched the flying object approach, snorting and spitting to pass the time. It was an alien, no doubt about that, but what could it possibly be doing here? The Nurg had never attracted any attention to themselves, nor had they ever tried to venture into space, so what interest were they to strange aliens?

"What do you think they look like?" Glom queried slowly, eyes heavy with fatigue.

Horj studied the pod, far more alert than his simple companion, answering thoughtfully, "Hopefully not like something I would excrete!" They both laughed.

Glom gurgled and belched, expelling a glob of mucus onto the rotor pad they stood on. "Maybe they look like us?" he mused idly.

"No," Horj responded instantly, "That's stupid."

"Oh," Glom said sadly. After several pulse-beats passed he asked, "Why?"

Horj didn't answer, because the craft was almost here. He flicked a few control switches to activate the signal lights, demonstrating where they should land. The pilot seemed to understand, and as it came in to settle on the landing pad, several rotors began appearing in the distance as the representatives of the Productive Council were finally arriving. It still looked like Horj and Glom would be the first Nurgs these aliens would see, however.

The pod opened with a hiss, a bizarre alien creature in a clumsy, ridiculous suit standing in the hatchway. Horj snorted and spat beneath his body, shifting his arms to better support himself. Glom started laughing a very stupid laugh.

"Huh huh. What?"

System H/C-T - Planet Sneed

Vrun strolled through the immense Diplomatic Ship that the Satellians had brought to show off. They were quite proud of it, and understandably so, for it was truly a magnificent piece of engineering. Even with the strains of war, they had managed to put this together in a reasonable amount of time. He noticed that the overall hull was remarkably similar to the hull of the High Energy Weapon currently orbiting the other side of the planet, and wondered briefly about the reasons behind these similarities. Possibly the Satellians hadn't even noticed the similarity, as from Vrun's experience, they didn't seem to be the kind of folk who would even pay any mind to that sort of thing, or so he thought.

Dozens of other Snuddian dignitaries were wandering about, though Vrun was too busy ignoring them to pay them any attention. He found himself noticing tiny stress fractures in the floors, possibly a result of Satellian superluminal activity, though possibly also a manufacturing flaw that was found to be within tolerance, or possibly something else. The ship was pretty, anyway.

"Vrun!" he heard from down the hall, his back-top-eyes immediately focusing on Oddu, a companion from education. "Vrun, it's me, Oddu! Do you remember?" he shouted.

"Yes," Vrun answered at a standard volume level, "I recall. What are you doing here?"

Oddu hurried up, the mechanical innards of his Proxy poking very obviously outward from under the cheap, synthetic skin wrapping. "You are looking well! No Proxy, I see? Not for Vrun the Adventurer!" he joked and laughed, pbbtt!

"No," Vrun lied, "No Proxy for Vrun the Adventurer. What are you doing here?" he pressed.

"Huh? Me? Oh! I'm a consultant for an engineering company. I'm supposed to look into how they built this ship so big, but to be honest, I think it's just a public relations thing. What do we care about building big ships, am I right?" he answered and laughed, pbbt-ppbbtt!

Vrun recalled that Oddu was exactly this annoying when they educated together all those years ago, and he laughed internally. "Yes, well," he responded carefully, "I've heard rumor that the Satellians are still worried about fighting the Invaders. They've consulted with a few companies here on Sneed about building ships for them. I'm surprised you wouldn't know about that."

Oddu paused momentarily, laughed, responded, "The Invaders? Really, are you kidding Vrun? They haven't been around in years!"

"It's only been five, you know," Vrun answered, not amused by Oddu at all.

"Five years? Yeah, forever! Look, the fight is over, isn't it? Did you hear about that big battle at Ham-ai-ya? They lost, big scale! Ran away with their silly giant tails between their unsteady two legs!" pbbtt-pbtt! "The Letto have been saying something about them fighting themselves, even! Can you believe it??"

Vrun was becoming annoyed, and considering bringing up his experiences, though he didn't want to gloat. "The Satellians don't seem to think the fight is over," he said after a second of very careful consideration, "And that's all that matters, isn't it? The Hletho aren't fighting the Invaders, so what kind of a source are they?"

Oddu laughed, "More of a source than you! Who has seen more of the galaxy than the Letto?"

"Hletho," Vrun corrected, "And the answer is nobody. That doesn't matter, because the Satellians want to make sure it's over before they start turning their backs. We should probably do the same, if we want to keep from being invaded again, don't you think?"

Oddu laughed again, his mechanical tendril tapping Vrun's body rapidly. "What do you know about being invaded!" he laughed, "You were comfy on Ham-ai-ya!"

"Hmmaiaa," Vrun corrected again, "And what do you know, either? I heard you went back into Sleep to wait out the Occupation!"

Oddu fell silent for several long seconds. "Who told you that?" he queried cautiously.

"Your mother!" Vrun verbally stabbed in jest, then laughed at Oddu's mechanical expression. Oddu clearly couldn't come up with a come-back, and was growing upset. Vrun completed the disagreement with a simple statement: "Told!"

Oddu left in a huff, clanking down the hallway, muttering to himself. Vrun felt satisfied. It had been a long time since he had been able to produce a "I fornicated your mother" jab, and it tickled him even further that he wasn't lying about it.

Vrun decided to continue wandering the ship, hoping to run into the eating center, where he might get a chance to converse with some Satellians and visiting Hlethos before the ship set out on its voyage. Granted, he would still get those opportunities before they reached Sethkhad, but he would likely be recharging and studying during much of the trip.

Great story Bil :)

I'll see if I can do a continuation tommorrow. There's a couple of other things I want to write about too.

"Do you trust us, Test Subject 5493?"

"Fuuuuuuuuuuuu......."

"I will take that as a no."

(Dialogue between the scientists and the test subjects in the experiment to find out an average Aiweh's capacity for trust while being catapulted into the air at 50000 pound force.)

.............

"Ok. I think I've done it. I finally fixed the darn engine."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Are you very, very sure?"

"Yes. Listen, what do you think is wrong?"

"Hypothetically speaking, I may have been hypothetically standing on the piece of machinery that you would have needed, hypothetically of course, to fix the engine."

"Son of a one eyed..."

......

There are many things that are Aiweh. There are Aiweh scientists, Aiweh workers, Aiweh politicians, Aiweh soldiers, and whatever it is that Aiweh scientists decided to brew up for breakfast one morning and forgot to disable its cognitive drive. Concerning the Aiweh scientists' breakfast, there are many legends. For example, it is said that most Aiweh politicians arose out of Aiweh scientists' coffee when they forgot to add in complex chemical formula that would organize the liquid into an actual drinkable substance. Considering what Aiweh scientists' do every day, those theories actually holds some water.

..........

Aiweh science is a complicated subject. However it is not unable to be condensed. A highly condensed version of Aiweh science would go like this.

-Science is good.

-Witchcraft is bad.

-Science without results is just plain witchcraft.

-Get results or you are fired.

-If you suspect any of your coworkers of being a witch, report them to the authorities immediately.

and finally

-Law enforcements trying to stop your research just means that you can make them into coffee.

There is a talk among the Aiweh society of why Aiweh society hasn't fallen apart yet. More hopeful and delusional among them claim that the entire society broke down long ago, except things being the way they are, people merely didn't notice it yet.

1.5e to the Premiership of Rheth (One of the largest non-Thaej Alliance factions) launching an exceedingly risky gambit. They will rapidly build a colony flotilla, using rented Jethan orbital industries, and launch it towards J/D-Botton Right (Murkhad, Planet Rael). Starting as an action to diversify Rheth's interests and establish itself in space, the situation may quickly become... interesting. The system has a Lelinthian presence of which Rheth knows nothing, and the culture of Rheth has instilled a strong inherited sense of obedience in the population, making this particular group particularly vulnerable to Lelinthian mental influences.
1e to building the Military Startraveler Far.
1e to researching the artefacts on Thaej.
2e to settling H/E-B, Lae in the Rhaeokhad system.
2e to purchasing the next technology level from the Jahahunoun. I suppose this will represent us bartering goods in exchange for information on and instruction in several Jahahunoun engineering techniques, materials technology, genetics, and other things in the knowledge gap between our species.

Actions
Startraveler Tharaez will complete first contact with the Pohm, then move on towards G/H, further exploring this alien species' space.

Startraveler Rhetho will drop several probes down to the inhabited world in the Retzukhad system, fail to receive radio responses, and then move on to the G/D region.

The fleet of Military Startraveler Hrkan will continue to survey its region of space.

The fleet of Military Startraveler Rhaeda will travel to J/D-L, the Warkhad System, and attempt to make contact with the drones in the area. If they do not respond peacefully, then this will be a test of our latest military technologies. With a withering combination of weaponry, we will destroy the threat which exists in this system.

The armaments proposed for the vessels were extremely varied. Over the course of several years of testing, a general weaponry plan had been developed by the Alliance. Large lasers existed to deal out heavy damage at range, with their smaller counterparts intended to work against any potential small hostile vessels, or to protect the ship from any incoming harmful objects. Mass drivers existed as a standard short-range weapon, but many questions were being raised regarding their potential effectiveness. Much more promising were projectile charges, which could be fired onto targets, attach themselves to the hull, then detonate, rupturing the interior and placing tremendous stress on the hull. Experimental ‘Saboteur’ Drones occupied one of the Zir bays, but the latest developments were only just being manufactured. Commonly known as ‘shotgun sand’, this military tool was a coilgun which fired superheated metal shards in a wide pattern. Ironically, despite all the effort placed into developing more ‘sophisticated’ weapons, in the vast majority of tests simply throwing tiny debris head on into oncoming targets was just as, if not vastly more effective than firing a mass driver.

@Bil I hereby approve the Satellian->Hletho tech exchange, though I'm not sure if I need to budget 1e this turn (to raise the Hletho tech level by one), or if I just have a net gain of 1e (from Iggy's 2e payment)?

If I need to pay, I'd like to sacrifice that 1e that was earmarked for Iokolu trade (still very early days in our relations) or a possible explorer fleet. If this is not going to upset things.

Thx :)

Descent

Any number of things could happen. You could be shot at, you could be offered a poison as part of some ritual, you could be eaten, you could be lauded, you could be given drugs, you could be mated with, you could be worshiped... or maybe you’ll just be greeted. You have to be prepared for any of those events. Any. Not just Thun, but all of pohmkind are being represented here. You have a duty to them. Remember that.

I remember

Hiamma set the shuttle down on the landing pad with pinpoint precision even though his arms were trembling. The gigantic, hawk-like vessel rested gently, waves of heat radiating off of it, with a slight singe on the leading edges of the wings.

He could not stop hyperventilating, sucking water in and out as though he were swimming some away from some kind of primeval predator. A little too fast, he pulled the four levers that held his arm-straps in place and they jammed; he had to repeat the procedure with forced calm to let himself loose from the seat.

Silently, he went through a few mental exercises his father and then the academy had taught him, slowing his breathing to a stately, deliberate rate, and he finally managed to stop fidgeting, pulling the seams of his suit together, closing them with determined accuracy. He ran through the various translation algorithms in his internal computer one last time, checked himself for diplomatic bearing (slouched, so as not to threaten the other party), and finally, opened the inner hatch, and then the outer hatch.

The light was gloomy outside. He had walked before, and even in rainstorms, but this was a different kind of darkness: without the natural patter of rain or earth-shaking thunder to announce that this world was still alive. In fact, the world looked dead.

No matter.

He walked carefully down the ramp and looked about warily before seeing two strange, fleshy creatures. They might have resembled coral-walkers, but with even less clearly defined body-parts: about the only thing that looked evolved on them were their arms and eyestalks.

But foul exteriors can hide the fairest of minds. He had to keep an open mind. Here he was – he, from a line of humble backgrounds and propelled upwards not by wealth or family connections, but by a yearning for the heavens. And here they were, an alien species, something inconceivable only a few days ago, another line of evolution, with different thought processes, different ideas about the very nature of the cosmos itself! On more iteration of the grandest of all nature’s creations: a mind capable of identifying itself as a mind!

It spoke with a strange voice, not in whistles, clicks, or hums at all, but as though it were forcing air over some kind of vocoder. “Huh huh... ghblot.” The alien’s eyestalks seemed to bend a little, but he couldn’t read the emotion.

Hiamma straightened almost imperceptibly, taking control (in his mind, at least) of the situation. “It has been a long voyage,” he said, traditionally. “I am Hiamma,” he said, gesturing to himself before continuing, “son of the pohm race, travelers among the stars. We have been to world upon world, but yours is the first with other sentients. May this meeting bring peace and health upon both our peoples. Who are you?”

He knew the song-like speech of New Qithim would make little sense to them, but hopefully they caught the meaning... and hopefully, they would speak enough for him to start to make sense of their language...

Aggressive Welcome

“And... we're getting signals.”

“Finally! What sort of-”

“It's... over. Very brief. Shall I play them?”

“Ye-”

“Wait... we're getting more!”

Dae Ro Phtan watched her console with interest as more audio messages came in. A strange, humming, clicking and tapping noise, utterly alien and inimitable by Hlethan vocal abilities, played throughout the area.

“Get those process through the translation software now.” directed Sae.

Suddenly, Dio entered the room.

“Brother, we've picked up local vessels, approaching us at rapid velocity.”

“What are they?”

“They are approaching in predatory formation. I would guess them to be small military starcraft of a sort, similar to our Vreta and Sesir designs.”

Dio roll-paced his way around the viewing chamber of the Tharaez, thinking.

“Phtan, how is your translation advancing?”

“The algorithm... isn't working on this sample. I do not know what is causing the problem, but the patterns coming out are... strange. Maybe this isn't language they've transmitted.”

“Then what is it?”

“I am not in a good position to speculate. Similar patterns seem to repeat, but not in a way that seems to be a message unless it is simply repeating itself in different manners multiple times... and if that's the case, then each individual transmission is far less than what is needed to reconstruct a language.

“So they could be repeating themselves in slight variations to... increase the possibility of comprehension at first contact?”

“That seems like a reasonable theory...”

“Brother Sae, we must act quickly if we have no access to the local language, their vessels are giving off rather alarming spikes on the readings, and our vessel is not properly aligned for an emergency compaction.”

“We can survive the first few hits from their vessels, if necessary. We will transmit a message in our own language, and see if they respond. Transmit the contact video as well.”

“Preparing for wide-range transmission!”

A surge of electromagnetic signals emerged from the Hlethan startraveler. A video much like that shown to the Horindi and Jahahunoun, showing the travels of the Tharaez, images of the Hletho, and the planet Thaej, among other things, was transmitted for all to receive, accompanied with an audio transmission.

Hello alien species. This is the Hlethan Startraveler Tharaez. We have come to learn, explore, and engage in mutually prosperous relationships. We have no weapons, and do not intend to engage in aggression. Please respond if you can decode this message.

“Something’s wrong here,” the governor frowned.

Nai glanced away from the image of the ship in orbit at the governor. “Yes?”

“This isn’t simply not a Betik vessel. Nor simply not a vessel we’ve encountered before. This ship has no similarities to any known schema of construction. There’s no sense behind the design. It’s not patterned around any kind of comfortable living space. Look here,” he sent her a data packet outlining the areas on the ship he referred to, “this can only fit parallel floors comfortably. It’s as though someone was building several decks instead of a free-floating environment...”

“That’s not something a pohm would do.”

“No.”

“Then there’s one possibility, isn’t there?”

“That being?”

“Aliens.”

There. She said it. Aliens. A statistical impossibility. Two races with superluminal travel, cohabiting the galaxy, and yet rising in a sufficiently narrow time-span to allow them to make contact before one had explored the entire galaxy. Or maybe they had already explored the galaxy and only just now noticed the pohm? Or maybe they simply didn’t inhabit the same world types...

Or maybe it was a trick, a vessel designed strangely so as to throw them off of the scent before it plunged down to the colony, raining destruction...

“It has no weapons, either.” They both watched as the fighters closed the gap with the... other ship, which seemed to be doing little to respond.

The governor jumped a little. “Wait, they’re replying on EM. You can see this, too, if you like.”

“It’s some kind of encryption.

“A lot of data. Wait, run the recognition sof –”

“That’s a video!”

“All fighters, cease approach to the unknown vessel. Give them breathing room, but stay between them and the colony. Maintain weapons at maximum firepower.”

The metal part of Nai’s brain worked furiously for a few seconds. Then, suddenly, she spoke up again. “I think I’ve decrypted it. Hang on.”

“Hmm, this is strange...”

A video unfolded in their personal views. The images started simply enough – those of the ship they saw in front of them, wandering among the stars. Idly, as they processed the video with their own brains, the computers ran a side program to chart where the ship had been in its travels throughout the galaxy – that being far, far away, more than forty thousand light-years.

The view changed. There were a people, a strange people... Alien people. They looked like a sea-cucumber with three limbs on either end, narrow and gracefully curved. Their speech seemed strained, hoarse, as though someone were drawing air through an impossibly fine sieve, and their movements were utterly alien – not powerful swimming strokes nor the awkward walk that most land-dwellers seemed to use, but a sideways, rolling motion.

Another view, and another view. A world where the water was confined to a single, strange ocean in the middle of a forbidding landmass, the star around which it orbited, a bright red, the travails of this people throughout the cosmos...

“These are aliens. This is it, sir! This is first contact! We are not alone!”

“Wait, there’s an audio clip at the end. Can you get any kind of handle on the language?”

“Yes, let’s see... Greetings, alien species. This is the Hlethan startraveler Tharaez. We have come to... something... explore, and... something... prosperous relationships. We have no weapons, and do not intend to... engage? Yes, engage, in aggression. Something... if you can decode this message. Respond? Something respond. Probably ‘please.’”

“God, the most important moment in history, and I have the chills.” Suddenly the governor sounded very, very tired. “Technically, we should pass this back to the government, but they seem to be waiting for a reply.”

“No reason we can’t do both at once.”

“Point. Send the government all the relevant data. Meanwhile, let’s try and give them a proper response.”

“Video?”

“Sure, find a few on the Net and string them together. And I’ll write the audio. We’ll want to send them a language sample, and music, of course...”

What represents a people? she wondered. And then she decided to find out.

Another burst of EM. Data piled upon data, first a basic primer on the Betikim language, then a full six movement symphony, then one of the stereotypical videos showing a quick zoom-out from the capital of Betik to a view of all of Metin, and then, lastly the simple message.

“Welcome, Tharaez. This is the colony Kukukik of the pohm nation Betik. We are most eager to begin a friendly relationship between us, a compact of the stars. You are cordially invited to land on our planet and tell us of your people, your culture, and your journeys. Again, welcome, Hletho.”

UPDATE 13

Aiweh colonists venture to the frontier, expanding their settlements on strange, alien worlds with haste and efficiency. It would seem that the Aiweh luck for exploration has returned, as a fairly fortunate system is located on the "western" frontier, while a system brimming with native sentient life is located on the "eastern" frontier. These natives, though fairly primitive, have seemingly mastered local space travel and settled much of their home system, mining and colonizing and even attempting to terraform worlds (albeit, with few results thus far).

Bako Tellian commanders launch a cautious, and ultimately costly, assault to recapture the Tounis colony. An armada of two fleets, each carrying a contingent of warriors trained in planetary drop tactics, arrived in the system early in the year. Unfortunately for the Tellians, their technological advantage was insignificant to the numerical superiority of the Skul'agran assembled armada. Though a fair amount of damage was done, their numbers were too few to overcome the defending fleets, and the defensive maneuvers of the Skul'agran commanders prevented any mid-battle troop drops. All hands perished in a desperate attempt to at least bolster resistance on the colony, leading to the Tellian government reaching a state of dread. Though new fleets arrive to replace those that were lost, the military situation appears to be drawing toward either stalemate or an all-or-nothing show-down.

Capricocial colonists spread out, settling the remaining uninhabitable, viable systems in their local sector, though otherwise make no further efforts to explore. At the moment, their attention seems to be held by the study of the primitive aliens to their galactic "south" and the newly-contact Myzokan race to their galactic "north" whom they continue to attempt to engage in trade with. While the language barrier remained a problem, significant efforts have been made to bridge this gap, and Capricocial merchant companies have begun making tentative offers of trade to the Myzokan settlers in the Sarford system. A new fleet is constructed, intended to resume Capricocial exploratory efforts, though these efforts are put on hold at the arrival of a new, and far stranger, alien species. A swarm of Kants arrive in the Capricocial home system, disoriented from their journey and apparently quite startled at locating a technologically advanced species. At first, they appear to be attempting to flee, though this action is halted. While the Capriocials know little of what their motives or thought patterns are, they remain curious and seek to analyze Kant communication signals to facilitate contact. Surely, a species capable of traveling in methods that circumvent relativity in mere space suits is worth trading with!

The Distopteran Hive reaches a barren system, seeking mineral and organic resources to fuel the Hive Ship and its population. The Nekopteran colony begins considering methods of space travel again, toying with the idea of contacting the Hive or possibly seeking out other worlds or species in the local galaxy. Though no concrete progress has been made on the aged and neglected propulsion systems of the original colony pods, a breakthrough is nearing quickly.

Geskani attention is solely focused inward, as the Singularity continues to provide resistance to the new way of life, free from government control, the rebel forces have secured all but the remote, wilderness areas where Singularity-loyal forces and machines put up minor resistance. The military forces at the frontier hold fast, unsure of what to do as their loyalties wane. A brief Satellian skirmish arrives at both (H/B-B) and (G/C-T), though seemingly lightly armed and dedicated to electronic interference devices. The Geskani defending forces seem puzzled, allowing the Satellian fleets to withdraw, which they do almost immediately.

Hletho explorers on the Rhetho have begun making a wide curve back toward home, though first they have encountered a system seeming to be newly settled by a previously unknown alien species. As the system is investigated, the Rhetho detects numerous large asteroid-vessels departing the system in the direction of Satellian space, followed several weeks later by the arrival of familiar Satellian transport ships. After a brief bout of communication with the Satellian vessels, it is learned that this species is a new trading partner of The Agreement and that contact between them and the Hletho will be happily aided by the local Satellians. Elsewhere, the Tharaez carries on its exploration of Pohm space, attempting to further understand this aquatic civilization. This time, however, they are intercepted by a Pohm fleet intent on making more direct contact, though the results of this are as yet to be determined.

The military forces centered around the Startraveler Rhaeda embark to (J/D-L), where contact was made with the Lelinthians, and a race of hostile, chaotic machines were found to be warring with each other with seemingly minimal guidance or direction. The Rhaeda carried the objective of eradicating this potential threat, and upon arrival in the system, it and its escort vessels prepared for hostilities. Scanning the system, they located no irregularities, no vessels, no facilities. Assuming it was a malfunction, they proceeded to the nearest planet and prepared to engage their mechanical prey. This planet, and upon further inspection, every planet in this system appeared to have been heavily bombarded by atomic and kinetic weapons from orbit. It was then that far-reaching Zir probes detected trace amounts of debris from mechanoid ships, as well as what seemed to be material originating from Lelinthian vessels. After some time of investigation, it is concluded that a fleet of Lelinthian warships must have previously visited the system and done exactly as the Rhaeda and its accompaniment were intending to do. Sweeps of the widely-scattered debris fields eventually located a fairly large chunk, originally assumed to be a very small asteroid, of what was clearly a Lelinthian vessel. Engineering teams were deployed to investigate.

A largely independent faction of the Hlethan race, originating from the land of Rhetho on Thaej, departed their home world in a colonial flotilla early in the year, seeking out a new home for themselves on the frontiers. Knowing that little exploration had been done in the vicinity of Lelinthian space, the Rhetho colonial flotilla sought out a habitable system in that direction, and by mid-year, located a system containing a fairly viable planet and numerous mineral-rich asteroid belts. Opting to settle immediately, they seem to have completely overlooked the subtle, quiet Lelinthian presence in the system. The Lelinthians are not likely to make a similar omission, though little has arisen from this event just yet.

Another new colony, this one more closely affiliated with the Alliance is settled on the core-ward side of the Hlethan frontier, while another new military-oriented fleet is constructed in the shipyards of Thaej. As a fair amount of resources are channeled into unlocking the mysteries of the ancient alien ruins left behind on Thaej, resources are also directed to the Satellians, who meet this offering with the implementation of numerous construction and engineering technologies, particularly consisting of ship-building and metallurgy knowledge. Lastly, the military Startraveler Hrkan and its entourage investigate system J/F-T. Everything seems to be fairly routine, until quite abruptly, a few Zir drones appear to have disintegrated without explanation. The Hrkan itself redirects from elsewhere in the system, ready for hostile action. Patrols sweep about the area in which the Zir drones once existed, but it isn't until one of the larger support ships begins to disintegrate, and then explode, that the fleet commanders are able to recognize the anomaly. A massive space-time distortion exists in this otherwise fairly worthless system, and on its periphery, the object is extremely unstable, leading to the disintegration of matter. Investigation ensues, from a safe distance of course.

A new colony is founded, near to where first contact was made with the Satellians. From there, Iokolu ships load up with material goods, heading for Satellian space, while the Satellians do likewise in return. As the trade route solidifies, so does the mutual understanding between the two races, as each side learns more about the other and the difficulties of communication slowly evaporate.

The Ivking global war is... apparently still going on? No one is exactly sure, including those that are involved in it. Not a lot has been happening, largely due to the massive amounts of damage to world-wide infrastructure and unhealthy doses of radiation floating about in the atmosphere, leading to many being dead or otherwise out of the loop as to what is happening anywhere else on the planet.

The fragments of Kant civilization continue to spread in many directions. The Okum Kant, still attempting to utilize the Red Fleet to draw away one of the pursuing Phleghesh command carriers, stumbles upon the Capricocial home system quite by mistake. At first, they assume it is a Phleghesh colony, though they quickly realize that nothing quite matches Phleghesh designs, signals or behavioral patterns in the least bit. Instead, they realize to their horror, that if the Phleghesh continue to pursue them, they might have spared their colony world, but possibly doomed yet another species to face the horrors of Phleghesh xenophobia. Surely, then, contact must be established in order to warn them of what is to come. They seem too curious and at ease to be prepared for this...

Meanwhile, the Sanctum Kant explore another potentially habitable system, only to locate an alien presence as well. Also assuming it to be the Phleghesh, they prepare for an immediate escape until they notice that nothing matches anything that they are familiar with. This is an entirely new, space-faring species. The Sanctum Kant immediately attempt to decipher the aliens' radio signals in order to make contact. These Kant are of the idea that, perhaps, an ally can be found to aid in reclaiming their home world.

The Parun Kant leave the primitive alien home world behind, not wishing to inflict themselves on yet another species. These Kant are far too familiar with the several dooms they brought upon their namesake, the Parun race. So, they seek out another new home on the edges of the galaxy, though they have yet to find a place where they feel safe enough to settle down.

Lastly, the Shadow Kant have traveled the farthest, bringing with them the ancient alien object unearthed from Sanctum centuries ago. The object, they believe, holds the key to their future and so, with great effort, they secured it for themselves just before the exodus. The Shadow Kant are probably the safest of their people, though they seem to be as yet unwilling to settle down, despite the great distance between themselves and the Phleghesh.

The Kekeji continue to have domestic problems, as malicious forces have managed to smuggle explosives onto one of the exploration ships, resulting in a very deadly explosion and an even higher security alert. Efforts are made to restore order to their civilization yet again, though it has yet to make a difference.

The Lelinthians continue their idle exploration of the galaxy, not really seeming exactly interested in making contact with the several alien species they have met in recent years. The exploration efforts of Kelethletel locates a Geskani colony, and the native defenders seem cautious to even approach the assembly of Lelinthian ships. After several days of study, by chance, a Satellian skirmish/scouting mission arrives for mere minutes, then departs in a hurry after having successfully employed several electronic countermeasures to confuse and misdirect the Geskani and, inadvertently, the Lelinthians before their flight. It isn't long after this that Kelethletel, herself, begins preparations to depart as well, not feeling very interested in the natives. Elsewhere, Lotholitel explores the Nhroaat arm of the galaxy, again disinterested in making contact, and thereby not able to be warned that they might be heading straight into a bizarre space crystal monster. Let's hope they just have a near-miss, at most. Efforts are made with haste to quell the unrest of the Vurdu people, especially once a Satellian exploration crew arrives. Warden Kululuthul politely explains that this system is none of their business, and that they should probably leave if not intent on completing any specific objective.

Myzokan explorers carry on their work of mapping the local galaxy, while diplomatic efforts continue with the newly-contacted Capricocial race. Elsewhere, Myzokan ships have encountered a race of space suit-clad aliens seeming to be quite disoriented and easily startled, though mildly curious in the Myzokan ships. What will come of this is, of course, yet to be determined. Otherwise, the Myzokans have invested quite a bit of their available resources into colonial expansion around the local regions of the galaxy.

Nhroaat SsKraed warships pursue the mysterious space crystal, while another fleet investigates the aftermath of the space crystal's attacks on the Krensht colony. Finding nothing but dead bodies littering the colonies, and fully depleted power sources in the otherwise completely intact facilities, the fleet reports its findings. The government remains uncertain as to how to respond.

The Orindi keep doing their thing.

Phleghesh command carriers continue to pursue the Kant across the galaxy, though morale for this endeavor is wearing thin. With little trace of the Kant remaining, the ruling council begins to consider recalling their ships back home, as new threats have emerged on other frontiers. Having left beacons behind in the formerly Kant-settled systems, the Ulmans Kungs explorers are detected and engaged, resulting in a fairly one-sided battle with the experience and bloodthirsty Phleghesh carrier. Still uncertain as to what should be done about the Raer, the two carriers in (D/I-B) hold their position as the council attempts to make a decision. A new carrier is assembled at the home world, while colonial expedition are sent out to settle the former Kant home world, as well as the home world of the primitive Parun species that seem to have been conquered by the Kant. These two colonies are directed largely toward studying the remains of their foes.

The Pohm nation of Betik assembles a new fleet in reaction to numerous alien contacts, while the Thun fleet is drawn away from the Nurg home world to attempt contact with Hletho explorers investigating system (G/H-T). Scientists achieve several major breakthroughs across the Pohm home world, and the information is quickly spread among the nations and colonies through various trade and espionage interactions. Several smaller nations make simultaneous moves for power, capturing considerable territory and resources from the Toti state. Though not particularly threatening, this news adds to political tensions across Pohm space regardless. Lastly, an alien fleet arrives in system (F/H-R), bringing the total number of alien contacts up to three in the past two years.

Raer explorers investigate system (F/H-R), inadvertently making contact with the Pohm. Other explorers pull away from the dangerous frontier, exploring "north" toward the core, though numerous lesser groups seem rattled by this as the mysterious alien threat to the "west" remains unresolved. To settle this issue, two new fleets of ships are assembled in orbit of the home world, bringing calm back to the masses.

Satellian explorers reach the Iokolu home world, while traders begin to traverse back and forth between the frontier colonies of the two races, bringing increased wealth to both species. Two small expeditions are launched to probe the nearest Geskani colonies, though in finding the two systems still being defended, they withdraw immediately. Nonetheless, the operation proves the viability of the electronic countermeasure systems employed on the two skirmishing fleets, enabling them to escape without incident. Warships shuffle about, as the defensive lines are drawn, though the Geskani attacks seem to have ceased, at least for the time being. One of the new Danger Area Exploration Fleets is sent in the direction of Lelinthian space, encountering a planet seeming to belong to them, though evidence suggests a far more primitive native species inhabiting the bulk of the planet. Regardless, with the insistence of the heavily armed fleet of Lelinthian ships present in the system, the DAE Fleet prepares to withdraw from the system in question. Satellian merchants provide numerous technical insights to the Hletho in return for material resources and increased trade, providing their friends with substantially improved manufacturing and ship-building techniques. Lastly, the Diplomatic Vessel and its accompaniment of support ships arrives at system (I/D-R) to pay a visit to the fast-growing Hlethan trade hub found there.

The Seipas Yag expand their colonies, but otherwise do very little.

The Skul'agra complete their suppression of revolt on the Nu'halas colony, formerly the Bako Tellian world of Tounis; it would seem that the last of the resistance fighters have been weeded out and eradicated. A Tellian mission to recapture the system fails, thanks to the substantial number of defending Skul'agran warships, though a significant amount of damage is done to the defending forces.

Snuddian scientists make further technical breakthroughs, reveling in their mastery of science and technology as their Proxy technology becomes more and more seamless. Permanent Proxies are becoming fairly commonplace, particularly amongst traders and deep-space engineers, and interest in exploration slowly begins to grow. For the most part, however, the Snud seem content to explore vicariously through the efforts of the Hletho and the Satellians.

The Ulmans Kungs lose their exploration fleet to a Phleghesh assault, while the combat fleet continues to make its way toward the frontier, unfortunately too late to save their comrades. Otherwise, colonial expansion continues.

The Undroth do nothing worth mentioning.

I added the income from Rael to your total income, reasoning that since the Thaej Alliance "technically" paid for it, they

should also "technically" get the return. In a non-stat explanation (more IC), I see it as a matter of Rael needing a lot of

supplies from the Alliance, so they would have to trade materials back, at least until it becomes a more stable colony.

Also, it won't be immediately subject to Lelinthian influence or its non-aligned nature, as I'm only just implementing

"colony loyalty" this turn, so starting next turn things will get much more interesting.

Okay! I'm sorry if quality wanes in the narrative, but it was getting increasingly difficult to maintain focus and keep up my update-endurance for the last few paragraphs. Also, Iggy required several paragraphs, the greedy jerk! :p

I haven't fully update fleet positions in the stats, but I'll get to that eventually. I'm hoping that everything is accurate, but if not, let me know and I will fix it!

EDIT: Also! I'm intent on adding in "colony loyalty" to the stats, but I haven't yet! Expect it soon!!

Oh cool! An alien!

I can't wait to see it on my disection table.

Edit: By the way, what does these new aliens look like?
