Lefty Scaevola suggested a new thread about Civilization Gaming Network (civgaming.net) with a link to CGN's various resources.

A quick history about the Civilization Gaming Network

(1) I believe it was started by Apolyton members who were unhappy about Apolyton.

(2) From the CGN front page

The Civilization Gaming Network is a run by gamers for gamers. ... The site has existed since Oct. 2000 ... You will find no adds on our site. It is an entirely non-commercial, non-political activity.

We have possibly the most extensive collection of Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri related write-ups, mod packs, maps, factions, fiction etc. in existence. Find them in our SMAC section.

Here are the links Lefty Scaevola requested:

Civilization III archives: there are 13 pages (25 threads per page) of threads. This might be useful reference for a Civ 3 player.

Stories archive: there are two stories here, Marchals and The Valley of the Hunters.

SMAC/X - General/Help/Strategy: Currently, the forum is being used for a scient-led project to fix SMAC/X bugs; however, there are a lot of older threads that are a useful reference for SMAC players.

SMAC section: This is an extensive resource for SMAC players. The SMAC files includes fiction (8 stories), TresXF's scenarios, scenarios, maps, custom factions, Googlie's custom factions, modpacks, demos, patches and tech charts, wallpapers, icons, stories and utilities.

The SMAC Academy is the crown jewel of CGN and is a must visit for any serious SMAC player. Articles include: Buglist, Crawlers, Pop-Booming, Social Engineering Settings, ORP's, Secret Project Instabuilding, SMAX SE settings, Part 1., Builder's Primer: Early Game, Terraforming: Options, options, options, Early Game Combat, Eliminating a player from Multiplayer PBEM, Treatise on Morale, The Scenario Editor, Alpha(x).txt editing.

CGN also hosts the CMN private forum (if you haven't been admitted to this forum, the link will get you to a page saying you are not authorized). This forum contains information that SMAC CMN's (referees) use to exchange information that players shouldn't see (e.g how to cheat).

Recently, the SMAC/X - General/Help/Strategy forum has been taken over by scient and a group of very knowledgeable SMAC players for his project of identifying and fixing SMAC bugs.

For players who are interested in bugs and exploits, the threads generated by the project could be interesting reading. For other players, it is rather boring reading.

I have had extensive conversations with a CFC junior moderator who has had extensive conversations with other moderators. I want to be very careful how I state the next paragraph.

Recently, we have had a lot of new registrants that come to the SMAC section (I'm estimating over 300). Because the level of active posters at the SMAC forums at CFC, 'poly and WPC is a lot lower than that, I speculate that there has been a lot of word of mouth among lurkers and that people are finding us through internet searches.

We are very proud that we are providing a service to these players.

I'll leave it to Lefty Scaevola, a senior CFC moderator, to expand on my comments, if he feels that he can do so within the general CFC policies. (Don't PM me for further details. CFC policies apply to PM's and prohibit the discussion of moderator actions, including communication.)

I am a supermoderator at CGN. CGN's owner, buster, and I keep the place spam free (we remove the spam and permanently ban the spammers), so CGN is a great place to visit and read (you should post at CFC where someone will respond:)) if SMAC or Civ 3 are your interests.

Except for the SMAC bug-fixing project, I do most of my SMAC activity at CFC. A lot of new players come to CFC because it is the most visible of the Civilization sites (in my humble opinion - I am not trying to start a flame war).

I use to be a 'poly SMAC person; unfortunately, a year ago, 'poly changed ownership and many SMAC posters have moved to WPC.

With the recent release of SMAC and SMAC/X though Sold-Out software, I believe CFC could provide a great service to players just finding out about SMAC and SMAC/X.

I applaud the decision to appoint Petek, well-known in the SMAC community for providing technical support, as a junior moderator in the SMAC forum.

Finally, I like the strict moderation policies at CFC. I think that is a big plus and no one should construe the toe dancing I did in this post as an implied criticism.

A lot of good resources there. I make a lot of use out of the SMAC Academy whenever I dust off the game.

somewhat similar to the WePlayCiv Forums.

While WPC has been very active in SMAC, its active membership has hovered around 300 since the beginning of the year.

Hi vyeh, could you please remove these two comments as they do not accurately reflect the situation at WePlayCiv. You should discuss the many positive aspects of CGN, not personal opinions on a site you do not participate at.

Thanks. :)
