SGOTM 11 - One Short Straw

I like the option of keeping a third bulb available for electricity. Assuming two 2700 beaker bulbs on electricity, that's 5400 beakers. We are researching at about 640 beakers right now (768 with the 1.2 multiplier). So we have about 6 turns of research we can do on electricity + 4 turns we can do on liberalism for 10 turns. That's in addition to the 2 turns of research we have left on physics (+ bulb) for a total of 12 turns. So by going physics (bulb) -- electricity (6 turns) -- liberalism (4 turns), we'll know whether we have the Delhi GE while leaving the option of double bulbing electricity (shaving about 5 turns of research). If we get the GE, then we save the GS for VC. If we don't get the GE, then we should bulb the GS and tech economics later for a replacement GP (or alternatively communism, not sure which is faster). It will take 10+ turns to build the UN in the latter case so we should have plenty of time to get the necessary replacement GP.

I'll slow down rice by a turn to increase our engineer odds.

We don't need to upgrade the western galley - we can just use it as a bridge to gold city. The only reason I suggested upgrading it is because it will reach ivory about 2 turns before the existing galleon outside of 2-fish, which will allow for faster transport to barb island. Then again, I think the ivory galley can do the two trips equally as fast as it will take for an upgraded (or non-upgraded) galleon from the west to reach ivory anyways so let's just save the cash. No upgrade for the western galley.

As far as I can see the GE odds options are:

T+11 = 53%
T+12 = 54%
T+13 = 55%
T+14 = 57%

We can pop-rush the Rice GS in Delhi-date + 3t, losing 3 pop in the process. All of these would beat Two Fish going full steam - for another GS on T+21.

Essentially it's 1% per turn, and I agree with shyuhe that rushing Delhi opens up better options in case we don't get the GE. I'm splitting hairs, let's just go with T+12 and cross our fingers.

T+12 has slightly better odds and we can bank food surplus in rice that we'll burn when we have to rush rice ahead of 2-fish later. I basically plan on playing through the Delhi GP right now as I don't think there are any big things we have to consider until then.

Note - one worker will head west to do some chopping and the remaining workers will build another farm before heading to Delhi.

Sorry folk, I did not had time to look lately.
My dance partner was doing her tests and I was taking her try. Used up my free time.

Well, Now it is finished I will check what happened..

Playing the set and Justinian came demanding that we cut deals with Toku. We need Justinian's votes so I'm actually thinking of accepting this deal. We currently have:

+1 peace
+3 faith
+2 resources
+2 OB
-1 WE trade

Incidentally, the same turn Justinian just went into hands full mode (Toku almost surely).

I'm going to wait 20-ish minutes before playing on...

edit: nvm, we don't have +4 fair trade with him yet so we can easily get his vote as long as Toku is his opponent. However, we'll have to be able to talk to Toku to gift him cities (in the invade Saladin back-up plan) so I'm now thinking it's better to not cut deals.

Tis better to be lucky than good!

The set started smoothly enough, although I was basically hoping to avoid stupid AI demands like these (both declined):

Literally all three of these came on the exact same turn! I declined Justinian and then declined Saladin since we don't care what he thinks of us. I declined Zara since it'll give us a -1 that we don't need. He's still available as a vassal if we want him.

As for the set itself, started by raising some cash:

Sold the map to others for 15 gold a piece.

A stupid proposal:

Thankfully averted:

Physics comes in according to schedule with a bulb:

And we cash the GM:

Took another trade to raise some more cash:

And a slightly worrisome development:

We may need to send missionaries to Justinian after we're done with our own cities to make sure he stays on our side.

We get the barb city (lost two maces to bad rolls):

Three more maces are on their way to capture the fur city. Its borders should pop around the same time that MM is completed I think.

And of course, the jackpot screenshot:

Rice will pop next (slight starvation right now) followed by 2-fish. We have 2 GPP on the barb island (GS+GA) already and a GS (from physics) near Delhi + the GE. We should single bulb electricity I think using the Delhi GS, and finish its research in another 3 turns or so. Liberalism is one turn after that (nearly completed already), after which we just have mass media left to research. Right now, it says 12 turns to completion so we might have to start doing some firesale of techs to raise some cash. We have 1755 gold at -180 gpt (0 merchants).

I think the next set will be mostly missionary logistics. Ivory has one sitting around and will build another one shortly that we should ship over in the next galleon shipment. Delhi should spread around the mainland for now. We have about 16 turns of research left, 1 turn to build the UN, then however many turns we need to win the election. We should be able to adopt theocracy for good relations after 2-fish pops its last GP. We are currently research limited to the goal line so any suggestions to quicken that portion would be great. I'll look into the math for running a golden age -- it might be worth more than a GS bulb.

Great news on the engineer!

I don't think we need to worry about Justin converting to Islam as it looks like we can win without him. The only major thing that can go wrong is if Mehmed outgrows Japan as the reinforcements we have had to send to barb island mean we aren't really in a position to attack him.

Refreshment on the own-religion issue: IIRC (exact info found somewhere in this monster thread) current religion gets +25% boost and a religion whose holy city they own gets a +10% boost. So a fully saturated dude won't switch to their own religion.

Excellent set, shyuhe. :goodjob:

Notes on the save:
  • We need to average 742bpt in order to finish in 13t (we could run a scientist in Delhi, at least). That will probably take about 2600-2700g. We have about 1900g, including the capture cash from Zhou. We could take some AI cash for Drama and Music for now? That's almost enough and, hopefully, they'll have some more later.
  • After the GE bomb, we'll need 270h in Delhi. We wanna convert the workshops 1t before MM. If we can line up a build for max overflow, we'll need 46 base hpt (assuming OR). Delhi will starve down as a consequence, so I think we should look at farming over some cottages, as well. I think we have 2-3 spares after reaching the production target.
  • I'm a bit worried that Justinian might take Angle from Toku... Not sure what we can do about that. ATM, it seems that Toku is solidly ahead of Mehmed, but we can't really afford him losing 9-10 pop.
  • Islam is really annoying. Doesn't seem like we can afford to build any missionaries for him. If he spreads it to another sizable city (like Constantinople), we could lose him. We're currently at +8, including +4 religion, but with no trade bonus. I totally agreed with you on that refused demand, but a +2 swing there together with +4 trade would probably get us the votes even if he switches.

Had a look at the save, looking really good shyuhe :)

We definitely have enough maces for the barbs but won't get nearly as many units in time to cut down mehmed without sacrificing too much research. If we need more votes I'd rather try to get more growth by spamming cities or so.

Main priority now are missionaries. bbp mentionned OR, I don't think we can afford that but should rather switch to theo as soon as we can afford the loss of GPPs. Do we need to build anything but missionaries and build research/wealth? Money should be enough available to trade for.

Who is playing?

Why do we need Theo? I'd only do that if Justinian switched to Islam and we needed his votes. Otherwise, we're locked up already. OR gives us a bonus on UN, and potentially lets us build more missionaries.
