Washington Monarch Cookbook Mark II (IC Concurrent)

My vote:

1./ Mintegar
2./ Hrun
3./ Bufo802

Bufo 3/4 - fair game but Washington with no forest left looks sad and you could have one or two more cities.

What I like:
+ the techies - you ve well advanced and although you don't have philosophy or paper but the AI hasn't either so all good
+ the relation with Gilma and Bismark

What I don't like:
+ the cities - Seattle an Chicago placement and also that you failed to capture the sugar south
+ the lack of military
+ that you chopped critical forests in washington that would have welcome lumbermills.

Shrielkul I think you got very unlucky with monte on this one

What I like:
+ you saved some forest in Washington
+ you did well in exploring for an age earlier than paper

What I don't like:
+ Failed to secure sugar south
+ Failes to secure iron
+ too many farms too early especially if you play without slavery so no whipping
+ Lack of military + under siege without slavery - with slavery you could have whipped chariots to hammer his axemen but there it looks pretty grim
+ techies you seem quite late for this age especially compared to the opponents
+ tiles improvement- some cities have 3 pop and 6 tiles improved while some others have 8 pops and 4 tiles improved

Mintegar - Impressive number of cities and amazing money generation - sad u had to chop all forest around washington though but it s gonna be a nice commerce city - also a bit weak on military but this is handled by good diplomacy 1/4

What I like:
+ Number of big cities
+ Size of Washington and happiness over your land
+ techies - very good since you ve machinery already and still in race for libe (5 turns only needed for paper) - difficult to do better I think considering the number of cities you have to manage
+ good relations overall with all leaders
+ big big cottages everywhere gives you an awesome income - I imagine you keep a close eye on your citizens and manually bring them back on cottages when they bugger off ?

What I don't like:
+ Washington all chopped down
+ Boston has loads of unimproved tiles
+ lack of military but invasion not very likely so so far so good

Hrun - Good looking empire and having education 1 turn away is sexy however military is weak at this stage and you are missing the sugar in the south 2/4

What I like:
+ Nice bit of land equally improved growing well altogether
+ 1 round to education while no one else has either paper or philosophy
+ exploration

What I don't like:
+ Military
+ Gilma is just a friend
+ Failes to secure sugar
+ Missing quite a bit of techies in the tier, you could probably give away paper and philosophy to get back to speed though.

Sorry I missed this round. Something work-related came up over the weekend, and I didn't want to rush through this round and submit a less-than-optimal playthrough. I will take a look at the saves and hope to contribute next round. (I will not abandon this series for Civ5. :) I hope. ;))

2. Makaz
3. Hrun

Was quite hard to decision, but in the end i put bufo's game first because it has very strong research rate (may be due to golden age, but still, he has 261 BPT research rate compared to Shrielkul who is in next place with 134. How much does GA typically boost commerce?). Also i think that Monty has declared on us could be to our advantage in this situation. We can just stay in war, monty should have no trade routes and fall behind in tech. Then we can build up and attack with a medieval army.

1. Mintegar
2. Makaz
3. Bufo

I got hundreds of gold for map trades (admittedly a lot lot more than I was expecting)

^^In my experience war or no war Monty falls behind in tech anyway but it may well help us even further in that respect. Also, I think GA commerce boost is 50%

Seems I was much too conservative in not settling rice sugar site. Glad that someone did and it paid off for them

There is no % boost of commerce or production during GA. It works in more simple way.
# increased commerce: any tile that produces at least 1 commerce will get one bonus commerce.
# increased production: any tile that produces at least 1 hammer will get one bonus hammer.

You can find it in Cyvilopedia/Game Concepts/Golden Age or in online version:
http://civ4.wikia.com/wiki/Golden_Age

Hey all, I know this is about a couple of hours late so I'll make this quick. The ordering here is very, very close.

1st - Hrun, one turn away from Ed. is the clincher here for me.

2nd - Makaz, yes I agree that your diplo situation is outstanding, nicely done.

3rd - Mintegar, an interesting spot with all of the land the AIs grabbed. Attack by Monty is probably very likely.

This is so very close  ... So far in the votes:

Mintegar has 7 points
Hrun has 6 points
Makaz has 6 points
Bufo has 5 points

Round Three Commences

yew kay....looks like we had a little server crash there. gosh..it's almost like someone released a new CIV game or something

Congratulations to Mintegar for winning the vote in the first round! :goodjob:

Another close race this time, but not surprising since we had few submissions this round. Several regulars did not submit. Either they were tied up or just bombed out this round. Either way, everyone is welcome back for what should be an exciting 3rd round. I predict some serious AI smackdown this round, so come one come all.

Below you will find the save that will be used for Round 2:

Mintegar

Round 2 lasts from 400 AD - 1300AD and will tentatively end at Midnight EST on Sunday, September 26th, with voting to occur the subsequent couple of days.
(Note: Alt-M allows you to set reminders for X number of turns)

This round is also open to players that have not previously submitted games and have not played/shadowed past the date of 400AD. Players that feel their overall game is too strong for the MC may submit shadow games, and this is actually welcome as it can prove educational for less experienced players.

+ big big cottages everywhere gives you an awesome income - I imagine you keep a close eye on your citizens and manually bring them back on cottages when they bugger off ?

I used to go through every cityscreen each round.. But this is of course crazy timeconsuming. So what i do now i use BUG mode notifications, which you can set to give a message whenever a city is growing. So whenever a city grows i click that message and look at the tiles work. That's doable i find as long as you have not too many cities.

What I don't like:
+ Washington all chopped down
+ Boston has loads of unimproved tiles
+ lack of military but invasion not very likely so so far so good

Lack of production is of course a problem here. But grassland-forest isn't that good, having a yield of 2-1-0. When a city grows and you chose to work such a forest, your net gain is just 1 Hammer (since the new population will eat the 2 food). Lumbermills just come so late in the unmodified game.

True about the unimproved tiles. I built a barracks in New York which didn't too that much good since NY is commerce focused. Should have sneaked in an additional worker somewhere and gotten a production-focused city online much sooner.

I made some notes when looking at the round-2 games, but didn't have time to write them into my post yesterday. Anyway here they go, i'll just list things which i would consider doing differently:

@Makaz,Hrun: You have no Academy. While bulbing gets you ahead in term short-term, you should be pretty sure that you have a good use for that advantage, which should also pay of short-term. Now bulbing philo i can understand, if you are first to it to get religion. But Academy in capital is just so strong, because in cap. you get +50% Commerce with Bureoc., and Academy multiplies science rate which comes out of that multiplied Commerce by another 50%.. If you can get Academy in the BC it will pay for itself quite soon.

@Makaz: You got +2 whip-anger in capital. Now i have no proof that this is bad, but i normally try to avoid stacking whips. Doing the whips when they will "convert" multiple pop-points works out good, because by the time the pop grows back, the whip-angryness has often disappeared.
In Atlanta you have queued up a lighthouse and then a library. I would reverse that and build library first. Land tiles with cottages are stronger than coast tiles in the long run (of course colossus wonder would change that), so by the time your city has grown to actually need to work the coast-tiles, there should have been plenty of time to get both library and lighthouse built. Since it's better to work land-tiles first, it's better to build the library first since it will actually benefit you while lighthouse will not. Additionally, in that SE spot you are in culture-battle with Gilgamesh, so that's another reason why the library is needed sooner.
Maybe move more troops to the north, if i remember your game correctly you should be diplomatically safe from Giggles while Monty might attack.

@Hrun: You are in a position to get Liberalism at an impressively early time. But will you gain that much from it? I guess you would take Nationalism as the tech, and then trade with AIs to backfill tech, or how would you play on? My concern is that AIs with more land-area would eventually out-research you, so i guess the plan would be to get to riffling and then go to war?
Not sure about building so many markets so early, my preference is to build forges first.

@Shrielkul: I like your plan of moving the capital to the strong central commerce city, but i guess it turned out that you could not do it savely while having psycho-monty as neighbour.
Luckily for us players, the AI is forced by the game-designers to give away that it's preparing a war. That means you should contact leaders which could be dangerous to you periodically and check for WHEOOHRN mode. That gives you early warning and you can be prepared.
I'd consider changing Religion to that of Gilgamesh, to prevent the danger him declaring on you also.
You should be able to fend of montys aggression relatively easily, but will have to whip out some troops (preferably horse archers i guess) which will slow down your tech pacesome.
Try to get Monarchy soon, especially with the AIs in this game as so many of them have HR as their favorite civic. Trade with some AI to get it sooner. Yes, that trade will accelerate AI-teching. But i think HR is just so usefull you should not delay it too long. Even if you loose the liberalism race, that's not that big of a deal and certainly better than going for 1000 years without HR.

@Bufo802: It was allready mentioned, your Northern cities placement looses one fish. I guess not that big of a deal in the short/medium term, as there is a strong city there which has iron and food sources. But in the long run it would of course be better to be able to work all resources.
Can't really complain too much about your save otherwise, maybe the harbor in Seattle is too early, as it will no bring that much benefit and depending on your plans you could use more military soon.

As for round-3, i see 3 possible routes:
* Attack Giggles
* Attack Monty
* Build Great Library

I guess i'll go for the war with Giggles, even tough that could be bad since he now shares religion with Bismarck.

Hopefully a more interesting round coming up ! We should see very different games depending on what everyone has in mind in terms of objectives. :scan:

Done mine already but its bed time so will post it tomorrow :)

@ Mintegar yes I considered using the first GS for academy but forgot about bureaucracy bonus... poop altho he was pretty late anyway

Can i submit a shadow for the seccond round, when i have the time? i've started college and had no time for civing this week.

Only just got back from holiday so will try to play this round tomorrow, sorry if that's a bit late.

I'll extend this round a couple more days...no hurry really. With the CIV5 and the board being a mess all week I know it has been hard to submit. Let's bring this puppy home.

Hope i'll get mine done until tomorrow. This round is not as easy as i thought it would be *gg*

As said before I have done mine but Civ V has for some reason taken all of my free time since then so I did not find even the time to post..

I am so ashamed !!!

I like Civ V personnaly - also it needs A bit of tuning:
+ game mechanics easy to abuse at the moment
+ interfaces a bit sluggish
+ Diplo to be better explained

A bit of fixing:
+ game not optimised and slow
+ some designs are ugly and need rework e.g. rivers

and A bit of content:
+ religions
+ luxury ressources needs to be differenciated like each bringing different stuffs
+ leaders and personalisations
+ policies

It has all it needs to be an awesome follow up of civ 4

Ok I finally post it !

Spoiler :

So it went quite well overall.

I first focussed on building musketmen while unlocking the requirements for Steel.
Then teched Liberalism and got steel free.
As soon as I did that I massively whipped a cannon in each city then went to war with Gilma.

A bit before 1300 AD I would take Uruk and force him to capitulate, leaving him with 3 medium cities to the east and still an interesting pack of units - so that he can be of use in the future. I also gifted him Los Angeles as it was about to switch anyway.

Next step is building a few extra canons, upgrade to riflemen and take down Bismark with our new best friend.

Edit your message.

In place of the "123456" lines, you'll want to put in direct URL references to your images.

The way that I do it is a bit of a pain, but having the larger-sized images for people to view seems to be worth it to me.

So, to get the URLs of your uploaded images, click on the Attachments paperclip icon. Since you have already uploaded some images, you'll have to then click on the "Manage Attachments" text that appears in the Attachments' drop-down list.

In the Manage Attachments pop-up window, right-click on the first attachment under the "Current Attachments" heading. Select the right-click menu option that says something like "Copy Link Location."

Back in your original message, delete the the first "123456" line. With your mouse cursor in the same place in the message's text field, click on the Insert Image icon:
insertimage.gif

Then, paste the copied URL (I press "Ctrl + v" to paste the URL) and then click on the OK button to insert the URL as an image in your message.

Your message should now contain a line that looks like:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=265712&stc=1&d=1285732953

You'll have to follow the same procedure for each of your images. There might be a more efficient way of doing it, but I haven't found a better way yet.

Note that before you click on the Submit Reply button, be sure to copy and paste all of the message's edited text into a Notepad document or other place, to avoid the server eating your message with the high volume of traffic that we've been seeing.

Pressing "Ctrl + a" when your mouse cursor is in the message's text area will highlight all text, after which you can press "Ctrl + c" to copy it into your copy & paste buffer, then open up Notepad or your favourite text editor and press "Ctrl + v" to copy and paste the text. You know, so that you don't spend the time to update all of your images only to have the server eat your message and then have to do the work all over again.

EDIT: Note that you will probably want the thumbnail versions of your images (the small-sized images that you currently have appearing in your message) to appear at the bottom of your spoiler tag but inside of your spoiler tag.

To do that, you would want the "123456" lines to appear at the end of your message, before your closing
tag.

One way would be to copy and paste all of the attachments links that you already have and put them at the end of the message.

The easier way to insert all of these thumbnails at the end of your message at once would be to:
First place your mouse cursor just before the closing
tag.

Then, click on the Attachments icon
attach.gif

Select the last item in the list, called "Insert All."

You should see a bunch of "123456" lines appear again. If you don't want them to appear as a big mess, delete the spaces after the first 4 tags, so that first 5 thumbnail pictures will all appear on the same line as each other. Then, leave a line between the 5th and 6th 123456" lines and delete all of the spaces between the further tags. Voila, you have a pretty set of thumbnails that look just like the default display of multiple thumbnail images, but they will be hidden within your Spoiler tags.

EDIT to the EDIT: The very last 123456" line appears to be your saved game link. I would suggest putting this line outside of your spoiler tags (i.e. after the
tag) or else just remove that line from the message altogether and the saved game link will automatically appear at the end of your message.

This way, people can easily find all of the uploaded saved games when browsing the thread later, without having to dig through the spoiler tags.

It will also mean that you can see a counter of how many people have downloaded your saved game.

Note that you can see an example of this image layout in one of my messages from Round 2 of this game over in the Immortal version of this thread. That link will take you to a message where you can see that the bigger versions of the images appear within the spoiler tag, the thumbnail "small" versions of the images appear at the end of the spoiler tag but still inside of the spoiler, while the saved game file appears at the end of the message outside of the spoiler tag, so that you can see the count as to how many people downloaded the game.

my 400 - 1300 round

Spoiler :

sorry don't have time to write up much of a description today
Monty attacked in 430AD, stayed in War ever since.
I probably dragged my feet a little too much in getting troops over there, but his days are numberded.

Bismarck also declared on me, just a few turns after Monty. My fault for trying to please everyone and staying in no-relegion. I did bribe France into War with germany, which caused Bismarck to pull his troops back, but the whole affair did kill all the trade-routes with the eastern continent.
