In order to qualify for this spoiler, you must have a map of at least 2/3 of the other continent's shores. That is all. This will also be the game ending spoiler thread.

Spoiler spoiler :
I settle on the spot, even though I know there's a wheat hiding in the fog. I didn't want to settle on a BG. I would have definately been better to go one NW, though. I started Writing at minimum science. I started with a couple of warriors and a curragh.

In 2630BC I found York under the breath of a barbarian. Interestingly, he would sack York the next turn and destroy the zero shields invested towards a worker.

york7ot.jpg

But then in 2590BC...

babwar8px.jpg

The warrior attacking London loses to the lone defending archer. Whew.

In 2190BC I settle Nottingham by the spices.

nottingham5qw.jpg

In 1910BC I found Hastings...

hastings2bv.jpg

I also trigger the Babylonian GA in 1870BC, and get Ashur for peace. :D Abandoned immediately.

1650BC is when Canterbury is founded among blobs of pollution.

canterbury6se.jpg

In 1525BC, I get Philosophy first and take CoL. I start Republic at max.

I get full contact in 1225BC.

And in 875BC I build the MoM.

In 950BC I get Republic and revolt, drawing... and 1 turn anarchy? :D

mom0fm.jpg

And in 610BC the Colossus... which triggers my GA...

colossus8xb.jpg

In 550BC I reach the MA...

In 350BC another wonder...

Spoiler spoiler :
This is my empire at 10AD:

And here's F11:

10adf116nn.jpg

In 150AD I get a wonder I usually hate, Sistine.

sistine6qj.jpg

In 380AD I get the Knights Templar in Nottingham...

knightstemplar6rf.jpg

And in 500AD... Copernicus'.

copernicus2qy.jpg

Since things started to get boring, in 630AD, I attack the Iroquois for some saltpeter to bombard some random guy with. :hammer:

Oh, and my cities had nothing to build but troops. Damn slow tech pace.

Mauch Chunk...

mauchchunk6xv.jpg

And another...

cattaraugus0bs.jpg

And Centralia...

Spoiler spoiler :
780AD marks my IA entrance...

In 820AD I just decide to annoying Babylon with my Man-O-Wars. :D

After a while, in 960AD I decide to attack the Indians for some coal...

In 1070AD Alex comes a-knocking...

greekwar3yx.jpg

Later, America (with a MPP with Sumeria) signs with Greece against me. But I don't care. Impressment gave me a big navy.

To counter... I sign a dreaded MPP with Sumer.

sumermpp5jv.jpg

Oops.

sumermppeffect8gc.jpg

And a leader... who makes an army.

leader0xf.jpg

Greece signs India against me. This should be interesting.

Ooh... Damn. I made peace with India. I still have 8 turns left on my Sumerian MPP. And look:

repdilemma2lz.jpg

Now how do I get out of this?

Like this, of course. :crazyeye:

repdilemmasolution6nk.jpg

Of course, I wasn't thinking. Sumer attacking India wouldn't have triggered the MPP.

Since Greece refuses to build a library in St.Louis... I have to build a colony on the rubber.

5CC friendly challenge

I am going for a space victory. This game was great for building right up until the IA when it became apparent that in order to stay relevant, a good bit of attacking was going to be necessary. I built a perfect england, Knight’s Templar, Shakey’s, Newton’s, Suffrage, TOE, Hoover (deosn’t belong I know) in London. Smith’s in York. I only had one conflict with the iroquios during the entire first two ages. My crusaders did a great job defending the realm and the war was won.

The first real crisis was the early IA coal famine. No one had any surplus coal they were able to sell me. Without coal, I could not make rails to grow more food to maximise my population to keep up in commerce or to mine my hills to make more production. This had to change and quickly because I could see that greece, with an empire 2-3 time the size of everyone else and an ever increasing culture, was going to be a problem. Luckily the Iroquios had a single supply of coal not too far away from my border. 14 crusaders, 3 cannon, an odd cav or two and a short stack of rifle men set out on a quest to burn as many iroquios villages as necessary in order to let my cultural border expand. Then I used a colony to secure the coal. I paid a heavy price in crusaders, but they did the job and I was able to rail my entire empire. The second crisis was much worse.

I didn’t get any rubber, but I was able to trade with Greece for that and I made a bunch of infantry. Being so big, Greece was becoming a cultural threat. The only thing I had working for me on that continent was sumeria, always a strong player, but how long would they be useful?. America was there but weak, and loosley aligned with greece. I knew I was going to have to do a D-Day on Greece so I started building arms and resigned myself to the prospect of spending 75-100gpt on troops for the rest of the game.

The crisis came when oil was discovered and greece had about three sources. Paying for oil would make them stronger and me weaker. I attacked. I aligned myself, India, Babylon, Iroquios, America, and Sumeria against greece. Alexander’s only ally was Ottoman’s and I turned the rest of my continent against them.

I landed 4 galleon’s worth of infantry, guns, workers and cav on the tundra island to the north. Then I headed home for another load. The island contained three greek cities and an oil source. It would be a staging area for my eventual attack on the continent. My troops, aided by gunfire from my Man o’ Wars did well and raised two towns allowing me to put up a colony on the oil tile. That was great, but still no way to ship the oil home. I wasn’t sure and was half hoping that colonies acted like harbor (I think they should) but no such luck.

I pressed the attack on the third town and captured it. (I’m hoping it’s OK to capture a town if you get rid of it before the end of the turn.) For an instant I had a link to the home land. I switched production in all four coastal cities to cruisers and I upgraded two galleons to transports before gifting the town to sumeria that same turn. At least I would have one turn’s worth of oil. But to my happy surprise, the oil continued to flow next turn because the city I gifted had a harbor. I failed to realize and plan from the beginnning that this would happen. But it was still great, I forged ahead with cruiser production and I dominated the sea lanes. I loaded up my troops and I set my sights on main land Greece, a daunting task for such a small nation as mine.

Next intstallment – The BEF in Greece

I landed my men south of the island on a hill with salt peter. I was two tiles away from a size 20 city which I set about capturing. I had it a few turns later when more men arrived from the motherland and I razed it. My total military was raising steadily and I was up to about 65 units total at this point, including shipping and workers. I had just started building bombers and was a few turns away from aircraft carriers. I set my sights on the next large city a few tiles north. It would take 3-4 turns of marching to get into attack positioin. A quick glance at F1 showed I was running about 22% war weariness. I’m not sure how much longer I can keep this war going... Luxuries were increased to 20%. I need to take a few more cities before any peace deals

Beseiged...

The greek war: another size 20 city was destroyed, then a size 10. I start marching on the greek capital, and then it happens. Greece enters the Modern Age a tech or two ahead of me. Athens is packed with about 10 mech inf. There is no way I can take it. The war is effectively over so I make peace. The BEF gets sent home and I am looking at all these troops that, from this point on, won’t do me any good. So I disband a bunch of them to save money for research.

It seems the war that I persecuted went on too long and I am out of the tech trading loop and am falling behind. I have 15K in the bank. I gift all the other scientific civs into the modern age and steal two techs from greece. I rush the UN and Manhattan Project from two scientific great leaders that I had saved. At least I wont lose to the UN, but I can’t risk any elections.

In retrosepct I disbanded too many troops because I start getting dog-piled by everyone and their brother. I try to be peaceful and take over trade again but alliances and MPPS keep me in war for a very long time and I can’t get their money. One by one, nations start dropping out of the game. First america falls to greece, then Babylon and the iroquois fall to the Ottomans. Finally my old friend sumeria falls to greece. This leaves greece in sole possesion of the second continent. I share mine with india and the ottomans. India is a bit behind, but the ottomans have a large and very modern army which they try to use on me shortly after babylon falls. Greece has over twice my culture, is at 50K and gaining. Luckily the ottomans get the Internet.

I have no oil, I have no rubber, my coal colony finally disappears. I do have aluminum and uranium. I am the first and predominant nuclear power. Half a dozen english nuclear subs armed with tactiacl nukes prowl the seas. And when the ottomans make the mistake of declaring on me, I set off four nukes; two on their advancing SODs and one each on their largest cities. My remaining cash reserve goes into a greek alliance to keep them off my back.

I am three techs away from victory. I need nuclear power, the laser and robotics. Greece already has nuclear power and is about 8 turns ahead of me on research. They have 72K culture. I have around 30K. The ottomans appear to be contained for the moment. I currently have no spies in greece, and would be very risky to try and plant one. I might have to try a steal before the end. I’m the only one with space ship parts, and I just need two more. But I’m not sure if I can research fast enough before greece gets 100K...

Going for Space

I moved worker north initially, and then settler southeast after staring at it a while. I wanted my capital inland, and Wheattown would be my colossus city. After I found the wines, I knew I would plop down on the forest tile beside them. My worker running around came down and chopped the forest for a second warrior with only a few shields wasted, and then irrigated the wine. Another worker and then a granary followed by my 4 settlers (maybe a warrior mixed in I dont remember). Republic slingshot done at 1350. Enough of the boring stuff. 5 cities placed like so:

I was using the MoM initially as a market prebuild but decided to build it anyways. I also placed York smack dab on the bonus grass which I figured would work out pretty all right in the long run. At 1000 I was 7 turns from Currency, and found the other civs in 875 garnering polytheism from them. I met everyone except Greece before hitting construction (650?). The Scientifics got mono and engineering; we only need mono so life was good. Greece later got engineering as well. Everything was pretty much improve the land, make some trades, and push the science until industrial. There we lost some turns on a 100 gpt shyster deal with the useless Babs for steam that we couldnt recoup fully and we had ...

The Coal Dilemma

Ah so no civ with 2 coals? I figured there were 2 approaches to the problem: 1) Declare on the Iroquois with the closest coal; or 2) declare on someone strong to bash someone weak so they could have a 2nd coal (e.g. declare on India and ally the Iro. I tried option 1 with 4 MDI and 3 Knights; I raised their coal city with ease. But THEN they magically got MT and upgraded their forces to cavs. Not so hot, eh? It was all I could do to hold the barbarians back at the gates; I drafted rifles, switched bank builds to knights (they cut my saltpeter), everything I could. They gave me peace before they could take any cities, thank goodness. So option 2 was put into force, and worked MUCH MUCH BETTER. The Iro had no problem with the hapless Injuns; Ghandi must have made some politically incorrect comment about being a "real" Indian or soemthing. Anyways we got coal that way for some techs.

I gifted most of the other civs pretty hard; They were quite helpful. I held off on Scientifc Method for as long as possible; the Greeks were wihtin 10 turns of building it when I reached the Modern Age. I gifted everyone; no one got ecology so I took it and Miniaturization and traded around for the other first tiers. I got the Greeks to research a few things in Modern, kept an MPP with the Iro for protection, the Greeks got Robotics 5 turns before me, and I stole it for a space launch in 1620.

Funny that I finally placed a spy in Athens after so long; their ToE prebuild had turned into a Seti project. Since I wanted Seti for myself in the Super Science City, I tried and tried to plant a spy to destroy production and came up empty every time.

After reading the above spoilers about rubber shortage, my solution to the rubber problem was again attack first so I amassed a quick army to take the Babylonian island rubber, but I didnt have to attack when the Greeks wiped the Americans off the map and took their rubber, so I could trade for it indefinitely.

@ Tomoyo: That was odd the babs declared so early, what was eating them?
@ Budweiser: Did you think about keeping the oil resource city? I was going to disband the eastern wheat city to plop down on the Babylonian rubber until Greece waxed the Americans.

Nah, my cities were way too advanced too abandon one for an oil fishing village.

You both made the space race, that's cool. I might not make it.

Yeah, it's better to make a colony, cover all settlable tiles with units, and get it through an AI harbor.

EDIT: Which is what I did.

I just tried to keep notes of everything. The pictures sort've tell the story.

Thanks Tomoyo and Tone...was a cool game.

I think you have to start attacking early, and don't rest too much until you clear the continent. Diplomacy has to play a big part, too.

I'm gonna play my game on and see if I can get conquest. :D
