stNNES7: Worlds and Empires

Orders:
- Split 1000 archers and 500 spearmen into equal groups to expand in all directions.
- Use the 500 of the remaining 1500 spearmen to defend.
- Use the other 1000 spearmen to build a road from our capitol to one of our cities. before the soilders start throwing a hissy-fit , tell them that the faster they work , the faster they can join the rest of our army to plunder the barbarians.
- Use an economic point to recruit 100 new "chariots." Use only the fastest strongest men.
- Use the other eco point to build a road to the other city not built by our army.

There you go

A polar raindeer (or whatever it is that NK's got in his avatar) head is slipped into NK's bed. Attached is a note: "Unexpected delay met. Thirty-minute extension required. If failed just grow military and besiege Phoenicean cities."

A giant banana walks to das, taps him on the shoulder and knocks him out.

When he comes to, a note is in his hand. It says, "I don't think NK is online - won't be for quite a while methinks.."

[old]Lapponian orders:
Use one economy point to start building a network of roads,
and another economy point to expand to the west.[/old]

That's how this works, right?

EDIT: Ah, okay. :D
New Orders:
Use half of the army to expand to the west.
One ecopoint to start building a network of roads
One ecopoint to increase economy.

you dont need to spend an economy to expand, you can just order expansion or use some of your army to do it. Its pretty much free :D

"MY armies are great; MY spearmen are sturdy; MY archers are precise; MY chariots are swift. I will lead the army; it will conquer much in MY name; none will be able to stand against its divine might. [...]
...I am Yusuf, Maluk of Syria, Face of Baal, I unleash death in MY name upon all who resist ME, I grant prosperity and glory in MY name to all who support ME."

- Maluk Yusuf, the Malukal Book[1]: the Book of Yusuf.

The great army of Syria. The Maluk, standing in his great chariot, watched as it passed by. Spearmen, archers, charioteers... What a grand force! Surely there never was before a greater army.

Many thousands of men. Trained from their birth by virtue of their caste. Upon reaching fourteen, they chose one of the three objects placed before them: a spear, an arrow or the reins.

And then they were trained: as spearmen, the core of the army, who employed their short spears and round shields to confront and break the enemy force in melee combat, as archers, the bringers of death, whose sharp arrows could decimate an enemy force from afar, as charioteers, who rode their chariots into battle, through enemy ranks and to the victory...

...a great force indeed. The Maluk trully felt himself... like in one of those moments, moments when he was trully at one with Baal... with HIMSELF. When Baal took full control of him, his Face, his avatar, he felt himself as Baal, and that was as it all should be. And again Baal entered... and all was right. For the Maluk was this day a God; THE God, THE Baal. For in his hands was the might to send his great army into battle, to change history and fates, to bring death and destruction... or to not send it today anywhere. He controlled all.

He was the Baal.

---

[1] The Malukal Book was ofcourse introduced as a whole later. It was the sayings (or rather, the writings) of the Maluks of Syria, amongst whom it was tradition to write down their achievements and their thoughts.

Mali Orders:
-Recruit 1000 Spearmen
-Recruit 1000 Archers
-Expand west along the Niger
-Attack the Ashanti on the eastern side of the Niger from Timbuktu with 1000 Spearmen and 1000 Archers; tactics are simple: spearmen form a line which advances and engages the Ashanti, archers fire on the Ashanti from behind the spear line
-Irrigate the farmland along the Niger by building canals to divert river water farther inland to the fields

Well, that means we have a grand total of 1 missing order set...

But I was going to update today anyway. Thanks for getting them in. :)

Update 1: Second Breath
Armenian Calendar: 303 FF*
Arbitrary Calendar: 1900 BCE

*Official in Armenia, popular in Mesopotamia and Anatolia

A few thousand years ago, civilization was birthed from the sands of time after a long stupor in the development of humanity. From here the first city states emerged, trade, politics, warfare...

Then a hundred years ago, some of those cities began to grow. They began to expand, and become true rulers over both their own cities and nearby ones. Empires took their first breath of life, took their first gasp of air, as the grand experiment of civilization took a new step even further, sailed ever deeper into the great unknown.

And now, a hundred years later, these empires have all expanded considerably. They have taken air a second time, and are beginning to prove that perhaps, this great adventure might not be for naught, that the great adventures of civilization might continue onward further and further. For all over the world, empires are coalescing.

Stormclouds shadow lands,
Black tendrils over Nippon...
War looms close, to arms!

The time when the Yamato sailed over the clear blue Tsushima strait was a dozen lifetimes ago now. The oldest of the old barely remember tales of the old land; indeed, all those tales seem rather blown out of proportion, like that of the cloth dragon coming to life and burning the ships of the unwitting.

Now Nippon is their home. Nippon is their life.

The Shogun in Kyoto has begun earnest expansion, spreading tales of the barbarism of the Takeda and the Fuji clans. His clan, they claim, is the only one that has the authority and the morals, to rule Nippon. His clan is the only one with the strength to unite it. Indeed, it seems clear that if the Yamato do not unite Japan, then no one will.

But their job has been made that much easier by an interesting event. The daimyo of the Hojo clan has pledged his sword and service to the Shogun in Kyoto, thus completely outflanking the Fuji and Takeda clan, and putting a great deal of swords in the hands of the Shogun to further unite Nippon. Of course, daimyos are of uncertain loyalty at the best of times.

(Yamato: +1,000 spearmen, +500 archers, +1 road)

******************

Nippon might not be the rosiest place ever, but traveling across the Yellow Sea yields hardly better results.

Tensions run high on the Chinese mainland, aided and abetted by roving bands of Nipponese pirate clans. These pirate clans are now a serious nuisance to the Song, the Chu, and even the far southern Tong, whose shipping they attack. Only Shu is not affected by their raids... And for the rest of them, they are only exacerbating problems that they already had.

In Song, for example, the dynasty has been having considerable trouble with floods, and have been forced to begin importing food, primarily from the friendly Tong. And so, even though the Song have lost a considerable amount of money from the food, they are regaining the lost balance through trade.

Trade though, is becoming more difficult. The aforementioned Nipponese pirates are far more than just a nuisance on the Yellow sea trade route between the Tong and Song. Ching Yih, a former Chinese farmer, is now the leader of an infamous Nipponese war fleet that, rumor has, outnumbers the combined Song and Tong fleets alone. His war fleet has been launching savage raids, attacking and plundering every ship that passes through the Yellow Sea... And in addition he actually controls the isles of Chubu, Tsushima, and a bit of the Sandong Peninsula on the mainland. From here he’s actually been launching raids into the Huang He river valley, plundering the starving farmers as he goes.

The same starving farmers are demanding that the emperor of the Song do something, and the traders are demanding the emperor of the Tong do something. Fortunately for the Song, the farmers are joining the army in large numbers in order to attain their goals (and get consistent meals).

(Song: -1 economy, +500 spearmen)

Of course, their neighbors to the south are faring even worse. The Chu, for example, while they have grown tremendously, are in a relatively bad way, with the Nipponese pirates actually capturing one of their cities in a fierce raid. The emperor of Chu has announced his intentions to destroy the pirates as soon as possible.

To the far south, in the lands of the Tong, the mercantile guild is growing ever richer and more powerful. Trade has sprung up with the new nation of Annam to their west, with the Chu to their north, and the king has generously began exporting rice in massive quantities into the desperate Song. However, as mentioned above, the Nipponese pirates are becoming quite ferocious, and the shipping lanes are quite harmed by this.

Scouting junks have found several pirate colonies on Taiwan, which look to be strong only in the naval aspect, if attacked overland, the scouts say, there is a very good chance that they will fall to Tong arms. In any case, no matter how the Tong respond, the pirates are being a nuisance, and the people are beginning to demand the guild do something.

(Tong: -1 junk, next trade route costs only 2 eco points)

And of course, in the mountains, the Shu with their cult of the Yellow Emperor go on untroubled by the pirate’s coastal raids, the first blessing that comes with mountainous living. The second blessing comes shortly thereafter, as they find that they sit on an absolutely tremendous copper deposit, and settlers to the south west have found an equally vast tin deposit. These two combined mineral finds mean that Shu has become by far the largest bronze producer in all of China.

With this new boom has come a tremendous increase in economy, and also a considerable possibility of trade.

(Shu: +1 economy, next trade route only costs 2 eco points)

Not all is necessarily well (as if it ever is), though, for the large westward expansion has attracted the ire of mountain tribes like the Tibetans and Thais.

On a random note, the emperor likes blue pottery.

******************

As usual, before we go on, we must explore the steppes to the north of china. And boring and windswept as they may seem, they are still a considerable force to be reckoned with.

The Xiong Nu have expanded considerable against the other “Tartars”, but this is not all, not nearly. They have decided, rather curiously, to ride on the backs of those ponies running around the steppes... and it actually works, to the surprise of all. From horseback they have begun to truly dominate the steppes with spear, axe, and bow. Soon, it seems, they may grow to be powerful enough to challenge the Chinese states themselves.

(+1 quality to Xiong Nu cavalry)

Meanwhile, events in Sinhala, a thousand miles away, are... interesting, to say the least.

With the death of Mahinda, the last sane king of Sinhala, came a new leader, his son. Now, Sinhala is a rather small isle... and there aren’t many royal families to have proper marriages with.

Needless to say, their latest child is a bit... odd... Kharavela is the new king of Sinhala, and while he is undisputedly a genius, he’s also more than a bit mad.

In his first years as king, he called up the entire army of Sinhala. Unsatisfied with the thousand men he had, he called forth all the able bodied men of Sinhala to fight in his army. Of course, not all could be reached and not all came, but he didn’t care, he had quite enough of an army in and of itself.

Raising a huge army is generally not done in peacetime, so the Veddas were naturally perturbed, and thus sent their army to fend off the enemy. However, in a daring maneuver, a force of 500 archers was sent forth, and managed to hold off a Vedda army for three days, all by themselves... Just as the Veddas thought they drove back the initial prong of the Sinhalese assault, another force of 2,000 troops fell on them from behind; apparently they had gone directly over the mountains of the heartland.

It was there that Kharavela was said to have bathed in the sacred footprint of Vishnu that was imprinted on the rock, clear as day, and it was said he had been eternally empowered by this.

In a lighting campaign, the rest of the Vedda armies were mopped up in no time, their navy was captured and sailed to join the Sinhalese at the port of Anuradhapura. Marching up his army to meet with the fleet, Kharavela sailed across the Palk Strait.

Landing on the foreign coast, he rapidly marched and defeated the Pandya armies, capturing their capital after a short fight, then marched up to defeat the combined armies of the Cholas and the Keralans.

By now, of course, the Sinhalese kingdom was an Empire, the Sinhalese Empire, and Kharavela was determined to extend their influence even further, to the ends of the earth.

So the fleet sailed far to the northwest, and landed on the delta of the Indus. Here he sacrificed a horse to the gods and prepared to march ever farther, into the land of the Harappans. It seemed inevitable that he would be master of all India soon... But alas, it was not to be.

His army had encamped on a hill for the night before they were to begin their march on Mohenjo-Daro, the capital of the Harappan empire, when his tent, situated at the top of the hill, was suddenly destroyed by a freak lightning strike from the last of the monsoons.

It was said the will of the gods had been enacted, and that they had decided that India would not be united, for now.

As for the army of Sinhala, it melted away without their leader, either joining the Harappans or fleeing all over the landscape. Their navy sailed back to Sinhala... which was in chaos. What will occur next is beyond anyone’s guess, but it is likely that the Sinhalese Empire is no more.

******************

In the land of the Exiled Arabs, much happens in the economic sector.

Merchants are given a freer and freer reign in the economy, and the government does little except exact tariffs and the like. The ships of these merchants constantly ply the waves of the ocean now commonly known as Arabian Sea, sailing their dhows just about everywhere. (+1 economic freedoms)

Meanwhile, the government expands overland along the coast and mines some of the large nearby mineral wealth, establishing a common currency system; this marvel of modern trade has rapidly gained popularity throughout all nations bordering the Arabian Sea and Mesopotamia. While other states have minted their own currency now, the Arabian riyals, as they are called, are by far the most stable and powerful currency in the world. (+1 economy)

In addition, the nation has created a number system complete with methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It has also the unusual quality of number 0, which has proved a useful concept thus far.

The Arabs, however, have adopted a cuneiform similar to that of the Sumerians, and thus haven’t really found a need for an independent writing system (despite the fact that the cuneiform is quite cumbersome and unwieldily, especially when attached to a language so wildly different from that of it’s place of origin).

******************

And thus we move on to Mesopotamia, which is certainly getting interesting...

Well, as the aforementioned Sinhalese emperor went mad; and since Sinhala monopolized the diamond and pearl trade, the Sumerian city states, while they still have incense and minerals from the Arabs, are being steadily crushed economically; each city attempting to mint its own currency doesn’t work well, either, and they end up just using the Arab’s currency... which makes them economically dependent on Arabia in a second way...

Fortunately for the Sumerians the Arabs seem to be doing well for now, but they are being steadily forced down and soon the lifeblood of trade may not be enough to sustain that which should have died a long time ago.

Meanwhile, an odd cult has been springing up in the Sumerian city states, which involves reverencing cows and bulls. Apparently reverencing them can be done wether they are alive or dead, since the cult leaders have taken to wearing whole skins of bulls, complete with skull atop their own head, still sporting horns and specially preserved eyes. Some rumor that this cult is more than a little involved with these bovines... The cult is highly popular with the masses.

Further upriver Babylon is untroubled by rumors of evil in Sumeria, their stately city between the rivers continues growing, its palaces sprawling now even beyond the great walls that used to mark the outer border of the city. The Emperor of the city, though, has begun something even grander than the rest put together, say the rumormongers–a great tribute to his Medean wife, who, supposedly homesick for her beloved green mountains, confided this to him one fine day... and the emperor of Babylon is not one to leave such things unattended. He is having slaves raise a great, stepped pyramid, with water pipes leading to the top (water pumped by slaves, of course), the water trickling down the sides of the pyramids to irrigate vast gardens of trees and flowers... Creating, essentially, a veritable artificial green mountain, replete with waterfalls, ponds, and streams.

This project has gained much liking among the people of Babylon, and some of the first writers are inspired by this to write epic poems of great length and cultural significance.

(+1 culture)

Away to the east, the Persian Empire does little but expand in all directions... Which means they have found the Medean Empire to the north. An arrogant people, the Medeans are quite... snotty towards the Persians.

We head next to the headwaters of the Tigris and Euphrates, Armenia. The landlocked empire has been expanding; the king has nearly given away free land to the younger sons of the various families of Armenia, who, lacking inheritance rights, are only too happy to get land of their own. They quickly settle the land on the Black Sea in droves, and a new city is founded there amidst the new, heavily irrigated farmland on the plain. This new area soon has almost as many people in it as Armenia proper did; the new city is growing with alarming quickness.

Meanwhile, the library in this new city has greatly expanded knowledge and learning of the arts and classics; Armenia rapidly becomes the most literate nation in the world, and with that, it becomes by far the greatest exporter of literature and such. In conjunction with this, the Armenian calendar rapidly becomes the most used in Mesopotamia and Anatolia... Not that it has many competitors. (Armenia: +1 Culture)

The armies of Syria marched against the proud Phoenician cities. Their snaking column appeared out of the Syrian plain to strike Antigonela with a fury unknown. The city, rather startled by the sudden appearance of this army, regardless, refused to surrender. The Syrians, rather irritated at them by this, crushed the city after a short siege in a furious assault that left nothing standing of the old city. They sowed the ground with salt and moved on, southward, past their city of Acre, and into the rest of the Phoenician states.

The city of Sidon surrendered without a fight, and they marched onward through Palestine, down to the city of Tyre. Tyre was situated on an island, separated from the mainland by a huge channel, and obviously they felt that they were invincible, since they sent some rather insulting messages to the Maluk.

The Maluk, rather than losing his patience and calm, sent forth men to build a large mole out towards the city of earth and rock. Soon the mole stretched half the breadth of the channel, but it was then that the people of Tyre sent arrows galore towards the mole, killing off some workers. The Maluk sent forth archers to take care of this, but they were soon driven back by a furious Tyrian amphibious assault from the many galleys of the city.

A stroke of luck suddenly swung the siege in the Maluk’s favor, however, as the fleet from the city of Antigonela joined him after seeing their city reduced by him. (Syria: +10 galleys)

With these galleys, though they were fewer than the Tyrians, they managed to drive the Tyrians back from their mole and continue the work. Soon the mole stretched the entire breadth of the harbor, and the Maluk was able to bring up his rams. After a brief struggle, the rams broke through the walls of Tyre, and a gallant chariot charge was pressed home, smashing the Tyrian army at their gates.

The Syrian forces entered the city and burned it, too, to the ground, however, just as soon as they left, others began to build on the isle, again, refounding the city, complete with a new causeway.

In addition, the Syrians gained the naval resources of this new city as well...

(Syria: -500 spearmen, -5 galleys, +15 galleys)

With these new naval and land resources, the Malukate of Syria was greatly enriched and empowered, and the city of Petra, overawed by this magnificent display, swore vassalage to the Maluk.

******************

OOC: The bugger's 29,000 characters... So this will be split in twain.

******************

Only a bit away from the Maluk’s advancing forces is the nation of Egypt, untroubled by the news of Phoenicia’s fall.

Much more troubling, understandably, to the Pharaoh, is the development of a new force in Egypt itself–the Delta tribes appear to have organized themselves into a whole other kingdom: the Kingdom of Lower Egypt!

This does not bode well for the pharaoh, because they are in some difficulty with the Nubians to the south already, and they now have a civilized opponent claiming rulership over the entire Nile!

******************

Now we skip over most of the Sahara, as I’m sure you don’t wish to hear how the wadis have changed hands from tribe to tribe in the past hundred years.

Mali, golden nation of the desert, grows ever more powerful. Their army has expanded, and they have begun a large system of irrigation channels that, if completed, should prove to be an excellent boost to their economic success. Their armies have enjoyed a bit of success as well, smashing the Ashanti in the few battles the latter put up...

Meanwhile rumor has it that another nation, as civilized as Mali, exists just to the northeast; the Garamantes are rumored to be a powerful people, and they, perhaps, have contact with more nations, which the Malians certainly would be able to trade with... Perhaps this is the key to ending their desert isolation?

Meanwhile, more and more people speak of gold finds to be found in just about every direction.

******************

Backwards, backwards, we go back to the islands of the Minoan Empire.

Minoa grows ever more powerful these days. The authority of King Cone has spread to cover nearly every isle in the Aegean now, all of them swearing vassalage and paying tribute to Knossos. Meanwhile, a stroke of luck occurred in the east; the Phoenicians have been overrun by the Malukate of Syria, and thus the isle of Cyprus, with it’s tremendous copper deposits, has been completely taken over by the Minoans.

However, their colony in Illium has been blocked... by Illium. The city is a decently large one, with a great deal of power and wealth, and they say they wish only peace to the Minoans...

Meanwhile, the settlers bound for Illium have instead settled in the region of Teke, a rather fertile area with plenty of opportunity for a great city. Some say it’s as good a site as Illium was. The city of Halicarnassus has accordingly been established, and a great deal of Minoan settlers are going there...

Lastly, Hellenes. Hellenes is interesting, to say the least. The city of Athenae has willingly joined the Minoan Empire on very good terms, receiving a third of the Senate in representation. Soon it becomes apparent why they joined; Athenae is on the brink of an invasion by the new Dorian city state of Thebae. The Dorians look intent to overrunning all of Greece, including the new Minoan city.

The cities of the Mycenae are rather hostile towards this new Minoan intrusion, indeed, they are furious, taking the Empire’s colony as a greater threat than the Dorian, who they have scarcely heard of anyway.

The city of Platea is the other major player thus far; heavily fortified and with ingenious kings, it has managed to survive every Theban attack thus far, but they are pleading to Minoa for help now.

(Minoa: +500 spearmen, +1,000 archers)

******************

To the northeast, the Kingdom of Anatolia grows ever more powerful. They have defeated some minor outposts of the Hittites, though far more remains to be conquered... They have also expanded considerably, founding several more villages, growing in every direction, and have found the city of Illium nearby, a potential trading partner.

Not much more to say...

******************

Ravenna is the city of marble, of gold leaf, of power. The city itself has expanded considerably, large stone walls having been built to enclose the sprawling city of multistory insulae and palaces. In addition, the city is building a great building in which to house the imperial senate, and as the private enterprises continue expanding their own houses and such; to cut through my rambling, the city is growing to be one of the greatest.

Meanwhile, the territory of the nation outside of the city has expanded very fast, very far. Most of the old Etruscan cities are under their control now, and they have founded colonies across the Adriatic. Northward they have expanded as well, and they are close to reaching the Danube.

Meanwhile, however, there’s a bit of problems in the south, where they planned to expand as well...

There are quite a few new nations springing up almost from nowhere in the south, like Latium, centered on Rome, which is a fiercely independent state that tolerates no infringements on its sovereignty... The Samnites are similarly independent, but even more warlike, either conquering their enemies easily or retreating to their mountain strongholds which are said to be untakable, and lastly Campania, a rather more peaceful, trading sort of settlement which is by far the richest of the other states in Italia. Rumors speak of states even to the south of them, but not many believe tales of such fantasy.

On another, more random note, the government of Ravenna, keeping their expenses very much in check, have boosted the city’s surplus (+1 economy), and young men, longing for a life in the field, join the Optimates voluntarily. (+150 Optimates)

******************

And yet further to the west lies the Balearic Isles.

The pirates of the Balearics have managed to considerably expand their fleet and also do a great deal of expansion in terms of land as well.

They have founded the ports of Panoramus and Messina on the Sicilian cost, beating up some of the locals while they go, intimidating the Sicilots into inaction. In addition they have founded two ports on the Iberian coast.

Where the Balearic Islanders will go next is anybody’s guess–they have scouted Iberia, have some influence in Italy, and contacted Minoa... And the blue waters of the Mediterranean keep calling the pirates back for more.

******************

On the harsher coast of the Atlantic ocean, the people of Portugala has grown from a collection of minor villages into a real confederation, a true nation. They have nearly unlimited potential, after all, there is so much to be had in the Atlantic–islands and such galore, and the Iberian peninsula offers few competitors.

However, rumors have come forth of a certain nation of Tarshish to the south, which has been variously described as a village, a city, and a continent wide empire. To the north the Bay of Biscay stretches beautifully onward, with many a whale to be had for the enterprising fishing boat, though already the Basques are experts in that trade...

And to the northeast of there, of course, lies Gaul, and much trade...

******************

Past even that, though, the Frankish Kingdom has continued to enjoy considerable growth in the past few years.

Irrigation channels have been dug around the Seine region in large amounts, and though they are actually not so necessary as in other regions (since Frankland has considerable rainfall), they certainly do help in the drier years, and in addition drain any swamps that might come along, a skill that may come in handy should the Franks wish to tame the mouth of the Rheine to their north.

Also the military has been enjoying considerable success all around; the Celtic tribes have been driven off by military expeditions. All in all, the military is starting to ensure peace and prosperity certainly for the heartland of the Franks, and soon for the outer regions as well.

Some say that the king should stop just defending his lands and lead true military expeditions to subdue the Gauls and form an empire stretching all the way from the British Channel to the near mythic Med Sea... but then again, some say that they should concentrate on building at home. It really comes down to the king’s preference.

(+1,500 spearmen, 1,000 archers from volunteers)

******************

Of course, the Franks aren’t the only Germanics out there... We’ve still got Germany to talk about (and the Vikings, but that’s a tale for a different section).

The deep, dark forests of Germania still house some of the fiercest tribes and people to walk the Earth, their warriors feared throughout northern Europe... But there is another face to these people, that of the trader, the artisan. These latter professions are truly beginning to surface as the city of Berlin in particular, is spared the wrath of the outer world by the shielding outer territories.

However, the older traditions are still very well alive and kicking on the outer frontiers, where the Germans go on nightly raids deep into the forests, slaughtering, pillaging, and plundering their way through most of Germany.

And more warriors now want to join the armies of the Germans, as they find that taking from others seems to be much more efficient than getting for themselves.

(+2,000 spearmen)

******************

Across the choppy gray waters of the north sea we go again, to meet the fierce, barbaric Vikings.

The Vikings are growing bolder every day, and now ply the seas openly with their longships, trying their best to plunder the hell out of everyone that even vaguely borders the North Sea. In the meantime, while out there they fight, back home, they are fighting (you’d think they’d want a break...).

The dark forests of Gotia are alive with the sounds of axes and spears, as the Vikings war among themselves and the Gotar... It would seem that they are determined to take all of Scandinavia.

******************

But of course, the Vikings are unlikely at best to get all of Scandinavia, at least any time soon. For the people of Lapponia stand square in the way of the path to Scandinavian domination.

The Lapps are truly a different people from the Vikings, much more at home with the forests and the environment of Northern Scandinavia. They hunt, fish, trade among themselves... All is well for Lapponia. Content in their isolationism, they have few enemies, besides perhaps the expanding Gotar, and the Finns.

Also, they have just received a potential trading partner... Gotland, an island nation, plies the waters of the Baltic by summer and builds items to trade by winter. They have a great fleet themselves, and perhaps they could get the Lapps out of isolation and into the greater world–or, lacking that, at least get Lapponian goods to the rest of Europe.
