Update 4: As the World Turns
YR1025 – 1050
The Siltorians are simple farmers on the surface, and deep in their hearts. It was not in their nature to be devious. But that doesn’t mean that they did not try. In 1027, a mysterious trend of burning fields began in Polhinos. At first, the trend was blamed on dry weather, and small, local forces of bucketeers were hired to prevent future fires from consuming most of their crops. However, the fires continued, and became more frequent, and Polhinos’s economy was suddenly struggling to keep afloat, their exports to Ysuly and Tassqua reduced to nearly nothing. It was in this hour, when the people of Polhinos were beginning to think that the gods were angry at their nation that a culprit was caught—a Siltorian. Of course, war was immediately declared on Siltoria, and the Tassquans, close friends of Polhinos and more reliant on their grain than on Siltoria’s, followed suit. Siltoria, having prepared for a war as soon as Polhinos descended into anarchy anyway, launched the first strike, pushing towards but not quite reaching the Polhina capital. The Tassquans came to the aid of Polhinos, but the two armies were caught inside the walls of Wos and neither side was able to break the siege. Meanwhile, a few small Tassquan militias have damaged Siltorian crops just across their border as vengeance. While they have a great deal of vested interest in the conflict, Ysuly has not yet made a move to aid either side. (-1000 Siltorian Spearmen, -500 Siltorian Swordsmen, -500 Siltorian Axemen, -1000 Polhina Spearmen, -500 Polhina Archers, -500 Tassquan Archers, -1 Polhina production economy)
War is upon the world elsewhere as well. The collapsing government of Romallekan looked like easy picking to Zekul, and it would have been, had one side not been victorious first. Still, beset by barbarians and weakened by civil war, the new King of Romallekan was not able to muster sufficient defenses to hold back Zekul. They poured out of the mountains and across the southern border and all positions south of the Romal River were lost to Zekul. However, after paying the barbarians previously attacking the nation to leave them alone, the king has also managed to turn them against the Zekul, and Zekul now fights on two fronts, against the Romals and against the newly settled nation of Girdias. It has yet to be seen if Zekul will manage to continue its early triumphs. (-500 Zekul Spearmen, -500 Zekul Archers, -500 Romal Spearmen, -500 Romal Archers, -500 Girdiash Spearmen)
Hostile activity from nomadic raiders across the mountains has halted Zekul expansion in the area and resulted in some Zekul losses. (-100 Spearmen)
And now, we turn to more peaceful affairs. The deeply religious nation of Ixa, having successfully converted many of its neighbors, has now completed a shrine to their gods in the capital, Ixafiranj. While the city was already a major pilgrimage site, rates of pilgrimage have increased, as have the rates of proselytizing and the pride of the Ixa people. (+1 Culture, +1 Confidence) The port city of Telfirj has also become a major site for travel as a result of the shrine, and therefore the economy is booming. (+1 Telfirj Economic center)
The transition to a state where Yexal is the official religion was fairly uneventful in Saraza. Fairly. There was that incident where the ruling lord of the northern colony declared himself independent as his lands kept the old ways. (-500 Spearmen) Oeme took the opportunity to annex the colony, which had always irritated them, immediately, and the local authorities were in no position to object. (-100 Oemean Spearmen) Otherwise, the transition went smoothly, particularly since the rest of Saraza already mostly practiced Yexal anyway, and the entire transition did help to restore confidence in the leadership. (+1 Confidence), though, as nearly all cultural institutions for Yexal are in Ixa, it did nothing to improve Saraza’s culture. On a different note, however, Saraza continues to employ its brutal economic tactics against Geraun, attempting to strangle their trade. Unfortunately, Crospunia has been working, perhaps unintentionally, against this goal, increasing their trade with Geraun in a way that has allowed Geraun to restore its economy. (+1 Geranese production economy) Angry at Saraza’s blatant actions, some Geranese sailors have taken to piracy against Sarazan ships (-8 ships) and hostilities run high across the straits. War will soon break out if someone does not step in.
In other places, such as the mountains of Ara-Dan, the hostilities between the seafaring nations have not yet had an influence. Instead, large deposits of tin have been discovered, allowing Ara-Dan to become as major an exporter of tin as Geraun. (+1 production economy) While the miners at first knew only that tin was highly prized among their neighbors, the realization of the uses of tin (to mix with copper) has quickly spread into Ara-Dan, and the people have begun working bronze. (+Bronze Age) Despite attempts to pay workers to work faster on the Zenith Pantheon, work continues as slow as ever, but the project is nearing completion, and the people greatly anticipate it.
Crospunian colonialism continues rather uneventfully. Attempts to establish a colony north of Kila have failed, this time because they encountered a people calling themselves the Sirdellans already living in the region. Also, the distance from the mother country strains communications between the Crospunian colony on Dalgan and Crospunia itself, but the colony has continued on well enough. Attempts to establish a colony south of Thori have also failed as settlers became unwilling to travel further than the current Crospunian colony, where many of them have settled instead. Pirates has captured a pair of Crospunian ships that attempted to venture around the peninsula. (-2 ships) Otherwise, things continue as usual, with construction on the Great Library now about halfway done and trade going well. Crospunian trade with Geraun has irritated Saraza, but Crospunian merchants claim to have been acting of their own accord, and Crospunia couldn’t have known of Sarazan plans anyway.
The tiny, new nation of Fuzzia has been established at the southern end of what appears to be a long and thin peninsula. They are currently very isolated from other human civilization with only a few barbarians dwelling to their north. Their culture, however, is influential, and some of the local peoples (few in number as they are) have joined the tiny nation.
Another new nation, Luca, has been established far to the south, in a region just barely known to Sarazan merchants and unknown to anyone else. The Lucans are aggressive, and their military policy has rapidly led to the inclusion of new barbarian territories in their lands. However, this aggression has led to resentment between the Lucans and their neighbors, and none of their neighbors truly wish to ally with Luca, though some have done so out of fear. Fierce fighting particularly on their northern frontier has cost the Lucan army considerable losses. And that’s the other uniqueness of Luca—their army consist of civilians, though the civilians are just as costly to train as another nations professionals.
Moroyo-Gaia has done some expanding and has domesticated horses, learning from various local tribes and from scouts of Rohirune who have reached their borders. Education has also been a focus of the nation, which continues to suffer under the burden of heavy payments to keep its populace educated. Many of the elite have argued that educating the peasants is hardly worthwhile and that Moroyo-Gaia should drop the attempt. (-1 Confidence)
The people of Zhiro have focused primarily on their road system, which has become one of the most advanced despite how relatively backward the Zhirans themselves are. This has allowed for greatly increased trade within Zhiro, bolstering their economy. (+1 production economy) Exploration has yielded little of note, though the Zhirans now control much of the southern mountains and have become very familiar with the local passes. The local tribes have been surprisingly friendly and have not attacked Zhiran settlers and scouts, at least not yet.
In other events, the Kelmar people who have invaded Rixitum have settled down while continuing their invasion. Rixitum has abandoned the southern shore of the river, and many in Tell, Ixa and Saraza fear that Kelmar may attack them next.
Talks between Hirdash and Hosrus have broken down, and the two rulers threaten to invade each other nations. Hirdash seeks Moroyan aid.
The Helsm people have settled the lands between Crospunia and Moroyo-Gaia. No one is quite sure what to think of these horse riders.
OOC: Hosrus, Rixitum and Geraun are now NPC, as I have not received orders for any of them for two turns.
Don’t post yet.
