Update 3: 2153 AD
"Gentlemen, when the enemy is committed to a mistake we must not interrupt him too soon."- One-eyed British naval hero, and reported drunkard, Horatio Nelson
Peaceful Matters in 2153
The year opened up with the Indonesian government splitting it's newest territorial possessions between the various major coporations in the Indonesian Oligarchy. The corporations were to vote on the territories that they'd want, at which point, the Indonesian governmental Council would take the highest bidder, and provide military protection of the land, in exchange for the money that had been bid. However, this protection is to only last a year, as each corporation is to then, within two years, be expected to protect their territory suffeciently enough for the government to pull the national military out.
In this manner, the provinces have essentially become "corporate fiefdoms", where the people living on the land have the choice to swear loyalty to the new corporations running the territory, or continue to remain a freeman. While remaining a freeman seems to be the obvious choice, the issue with it is the fact that the Indonesian government at that point does not give the citizen an identity card or number within Indonesia. And since they are not technically foreign citizens, but still not Indonesian citizens, they are offered no protection under the Indonesian slave laws, thus giving these massive corporations the ability to enslave anyone who does not submit outright to them. Needless to say, being stuck between the choice of slavery and serfdom, the people of Sumatra, unused to such laws have begun to revolt, killing several dozen Indonesians. (see Military Matters) While the Federal Indonesian forces have been busying themselves putting down the rebellion, Indonesian corporations effected by the rebellion have made matters worse by demaning money in reperations from the Federal Government. The Indonesian Rubber and Oil Company, by far the richest of the Indonesian companies, and one of the richest in the world has asked for substantial reparations from the Federal Government.
The Irish too have been busy with some questionable domestic affairs. The mass deportation of all foreigne males, be they Welsh or any other nationality began occuring en masse. While King Jack, barely understandable (being obviously intoxicated) wanted to "throw all of th' furiners min intah th' sea", it has been taken to mean that all foriegn males were to be exported to England or Scotland via boat. Females however, oddly enough were allowed to stay, and were heavily encouraged by the Irish government to reproduce with Irish batchelors. As to wether or not this has had any effect is unknown, and will be for at least several more months. Meanwhile, the construction of the "Great Wall of Eire" continues through the year, with most of the Irish Sea Coast effectively being protected.
London experienced more celebrations this year, as the English government made it's final and dramatic move to the city. Special visitor, Byzantine Supreme Commander Alexandros Dzensky and his entourage toured the new city, in an attempt to forment better relations with the English government. He soon left the city as "Duty Calls" (see Military Matters) but the trip was certainly historical. After almost 200 years, London was again, capital of England.
And so the English government got immediatley to work. Again, spending money into building up new railroad systems, this time spreading into southern England, finally connecting the two halves. Not only that, the English government has begun building a Spaceport in Dover, much as the USE has done in Dakar.
In terms of diplomacy, the English have also proposed a sort of new Commonwealth of Nations, with Australia and South Africa saying yes. India and the Oceanic Confederation rejected the proposal with a big fat "No!", while the Shield Republic's parliament debated on the matter for several weeks, before a rejection to the proposal just about squeeked through the votes.
The Byzantines experienced a new ardent surge of nationalism, in the wake of their recent invasion of Arabia (see Military Matters) as posters of Supreme Commander adourned every street corner, with nationalist slogans displayed just about everywhere else.
Similar propaganda has been seen throughout the Project, still fresh off the victories against the Imperial Russians. The Neo-Soviet state has been busy re-collecting classic peices of the old world, to stir up a fervor in the new one. Museum after museum in Vladivostok has been opened just to give these new items a home. Among the "reclamation" prizes, has been a Key to a Soviet ICBM launch site (as for which one, and if it's still working, no one knows), what has been believed to be a trunk of Lenin's worldy possessions (just as easily faked) and several emblems and medals of the Russian military, dating back to at least 1914.
Peace has been the word around the Carribean Empire this year, as the nation withdrew from the Great North American War, leaving their ally, the Unified States of America, to die a slow painful death. After several victories in Mexico, and around the Florida Peninsula, many proud veterans returned home, to see their nation rocked by turbelent instability as many of the average citizen called for continued war against the Syndicalist forces. However, the Democratic Alliance, a political party for the Carribean Assembly pushed the treaty through regardless.
Mobs struck at several cities in the empire, San Juan and Santiago being prime examples. The largest, and arguably most violant of the mobs struck at Havanna itself, having a go at the Royal Palace, before being dispersed by the Royal Guards. Needless to say the Premier of the nation, a member of the Democratic Alliance, was fired for his parties blunder. In came the Caribbean (FPC), under the leadership of Miguel Gutierrez. The FPC had been whole-heartedly against the signing of the Treaty of Veracruz, and help quite a lot of popular support throughout the Empire. After several meetings with Carribean King Ricardo, Gutierrez became the nations Premier, and promptly disbanded the Democratic Alliance, and gained enough power, through vote, to disband the national assembly as a whole in exchange for a Grand Council. While a large majority of the population was in favor of this operation, the obviously violent tendancies and backroom dealings of Gutierrez, nicknamed "el Supremo" has led to some general discontent among the people. In the United States of Europe, Pope Alexander II continued his humanitarian efforts, by building hospitals and schools throughout the nation, something many communities had been seriously lacking. But this just goes with the believed good nature of the Pope. Continued efforts at building a Spaceport at Dakar had led to it's relative completion last year, while European scientists felt inclined to do some more research in the field of satallites, rather then launch one blind into the sky, which is arguably a superior plan. While all nations have the capability to fire a satallite, the USE have the capability to fire a new, more modern satallite, hopefully capable of making it through the (believed to be) active Anti-ICBM satallites still in orbit around the planet.
Polish Emperor Pudzianowks have gone on a tour of the "Baltic Block" nations, of Sweden, Novgorod-St. Petersburg, Prussia and the Baltic Commonwealth, to forment better relations with them, and of course, to have a few drinks. Relations with Novgorod has particularly gotten better, as Pudzianowks stayed an extended week in the St. Petersburg.
Military games were also staged in some of the frozen wilderness in Eastern Poland, startling some Russian military officials. But the utter collapse of the Russian state left the Pole's to their own designs.
The Sumatra War came to an end this year, with Indonesia aquiring the whole of Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula.
The United Syndicalist Communes commited some hefty resources to censoring all press throughout the nation, to block it's attrocities against the Unified States from reaching a mass audience. Thus far, they've been more then successful in that.
