- The Merina (in French Madagascar; are formally still ruled by a queen who however is a (very unwilling, with connections to the rebel movement) figurehead for the French rule).

Middle East:
- Pan-Islamists (Turks and some of the Sunni Arabs who are alarmed by the westernizing, secularizing nationalist policies of the Ottoman government and thus seek to return to the good old days of a "pure" Caliphate, theocracy and Sunni equality under the Caliph; basically, theocratic reactionaries-conservatives with support amongst the clergy and certain members of the ruling house).
- Wahhabites (Arab separatists in OTL Saudi Arabia; very fanatical, are led by a radical cleric who is NOT Saudi as the Saudi dynasty was recently terminated by force).

- The Chinese Muslims/Uighurs (like OTL, but pro-Turkmen).
- Vietnamese separatists.
- Japanese separatists.
- Korean separatists (all three groups are British-backed and under FK political influence, embracing the ideas of parliamentary monarchy).
- The White Lotus (no White Lotus rebellion in this world, so the White Lotus society is still strong and has come to dominate several Ming-restorationist, highly conservative groups).
- Burmese separatists (in Siam; pro-French, to a lesser extent pro-Chinese, but nonetheless are very conservative).
- Javan Rebels (the only remaining organized rebel movements in FK East Indies; rallies around a local prince; not much foreign support yet).

Iggy of course, hence i said BRITIAN....
*mutters about americans and their inability to differentiate between england, Uk and Great Britain...*

I'm aware of the fact that scots and brits generally don't mix. But that doesn't change the fact that you share a time zone with England.

I'm unaware of the difference between UK and GB.

Thanks NK.

Starts plotting...

Technically Great Britain is the largeish island with England-Wales-Scotland on it.
UK is the nation i.e. GB+Northern Island+all the little islands+Colonial stuff (Not that there is really any left)

From: King Ardashir IV of Persia
To: World

It is with great pleasure that I announce the reunification of the nations of Kalat and Persia. Strife and war have plagued our nations in the past, but we will now be one in blood and Islam! Over the next year, (update) our two soverign nations shall be merged, through a marriage of our two royal houses. The governments of both nations have consented to this act.

Allahu Akbar!

Update 1 - Year 1861

Non-Military Events:

With Dalnorossian government support, Alaskan fur trappers have advanced further east, in spite of some clashes with the natives, and claimed lots of frozen land.

Gold has been discovered in la Californie (needs to be exploited efficiently by the French government to give more money)! That is to say, more gold, as if there wasn't enough already. The problem with that is that many people, not all of them from French Mexico (some come from Federate colonies, for instance), are now moving into California, where they often get in trouble with both local authorities and those colonists who already live there...

Major reforms in French Mexico itself take place. Although an Imperial (see below) Marshall is appointed as the official head of the Mexican administration, a Prime-Minister is picked by prominent local officials, and must either be born in Mexico, either live in it for ten years first. All this has somehow increased the popularity of the French government here, but separatism remains. Indeed, it would seem to be even re-invigorated, along liberal lines this time.

A Gaelic (Scottish, Irish, Welsh) cultural renaissance also coincides with a growth of separatism there, to the detriment of the Federated Kingdoms (-1 Culture). Meanwhile, an alarming military buildup is taking place; the army just grew double its size, and there are some problems with training it quickly enough (-1 Army Training).

Perhaps inspired by the Persian events (see below), the King of France, Ferdinand-Philippe... renounced the aforementioned title in the favour of a new one - the Emperor of the French, the exact title being picked to emphasize the ties of the Emperor and his people (+1 Confidence). The Pope said he will only recognize this if the Emperor leans on his Italian allies as to make them restore the Papal States, but in response to this, Ferdinand-Philippe crowned himself, saying that France is self-sufficient; regardless, this incident has somehow poisoned the Imperial prestige in the religious circles, as the Pope proceeded to excommunicate the Emperor (-1 Confidence). On the other hand, Ferdinand-Philippe also crowned himself king of Spain, codified French law, disbanded the unpopular Parlement, formed a new Imperial Assembly that however has only cosmetic difference from the Parlement, established pensions and healthcare services, strenghthened the Gendarmerie and established public education for all, in theory anyway. All those reforms were expensive (-1 Economy), but worth it (+1 Education, +1 Confidence).

Holy Roman Empire is having some problems... After learning of the renewed "Junker" operations, the Imperials have dispatched troops to root the "Junkers" out; however, they only succeeded in apprehending a few local leaders who don't seem to be really vital and in further angering the Brandenburger population. Furthermore, the captured "Junkers" fed the Imperials false information, and by the time all things were cleared up and innocent populars who were wrongly captured in Hannover and Rhineland were released, dissent against the Imperial government grew further. Attempts to peacefully win Brandenburg back over to their side have also failed - the measure to make Berlin the administrative capital of northeastern Germany has failed to get enough support in Reichstag, with Saxony especially fanatical in opposition to this. So far, the "Junkers" had outwitted their enemies, but this might not go on for long (-1 Confidence, Culture)... The government has also managed to pass a 10-hour work day act, resulting in antagonization of the big capital with large fees being collected from those who tried to defy this (+1 Economy), while the workers, or at least those in the south, have become more loyal to the government (+1 Confidence).

A Centralist semi-dictatorship was established in Switzerland (-1 Confidence, +1 Centralization).

The Italian king goes mad.

(see spotlight)

(too many changes in stats for various factions to list...)

Polish colonization of Prusy continues, and indeed is now on an even larger level than before. Problematically, the Polish colonists come in conflict with local Prussian Germans, who are increasingly separatist as of late anyway (see random events).

Suspicious amounts of Muscovitan troops have been noticed just to the east from Swedish city of Novgorod, apparently on training exercises...

Westernization of Muscovy seems to be beginning, as an university is established in Moscow, where much research is concentrated (+1 Education).

In a sudden gesture of good will, Portugal gave away two strips of land in Africa to Poland; those became the Polish Angola and the Polish East Africa, but nobody is quite sure what does Poland need them for.

Seljaz' attempts to reconcile with the Arabs aren't very succesful, however, as they still don't like Turkish rule very much (not to mention that they still are treated by most officials with contempt), while the Turks themselves aren't pleased by the provincial Arabs suddenly getting equal priveleges with them (-1 Confidence). Indeed, problems of separatism are growing further - Hungarians, Slavs, Greeks and Egyptians in particular seem to be dangerous, especially as the educational reforms made it even easier for nationalist ideas to spread, and the other Arabs, including those in Arabia itself, seem to be particularily incited by religious ideas (Wahhabism in some cases, in other cases Mahdism, in third ones still - Shiite Renaissance) (-1 Culture).

In Dalnorossia, the best of new agricultural techniques are adopted and new crops, especially cold-resistant ones, are exported from abroad. Though the central government is quite weak, it is still in position to encourage the usage of those new crops, and indeed, by the end of the year there was a plentiful harvest, with food then being exported to elsewhere in Asia, which not only strenghthens Dalnorossian economy as whole, but also greatly strenghthens the economy of Central Siberia (+Vasyagansk economic center).

A general military reorganization took place in Greater Turkmenistan (+1 Army Training). Also, law is codified, religious and ethnic tolerance is proclaimed and Karamurad took a multinational harem to appease the minorities (+1 Confidence, +1 Civilian Leadership).

The Safavid dynasty is restored in Persia after a succesful Islamic Revolution headed by the Gray Turbans and the pretender Ardashir IV. Despite this, Persia, though denouncing blind westernization, continued, in spite of some fears, to interact with Western countries, to modernize (but in a more self-reliant fashion) and to tolerate the religious minorities. All that caused something of a schism in the Gray Turban ranks, with the more radical minority wanting to close Persia to the world and to force all minorities and Europeans out of the country, but so far a direct clash has been avoided. The Perso-Federate Naval Treaty, regarding the Federate lease of the port of Bander-e 'Abbas, has been negotiated. The Federated Kingdoms are also obliged to send a navy squadron to help train the nascent Persian fleet.

After lenghty negotiations, Dost Babrak, the Sultan of Kalat, has officially agreed to merge Kalat with Persia in exchange for a royal marriage between his eldest son and Ardashir's eldest daughter. His agreement might have come because of fear of a Turkmen invasion (see military events)...

Widespread disturbances in India take place, especially among the Muslim population; it would seem that the Federate rule is getting less and less popular here, possibly to the point of an eventual rebellion...

Qing China seems to be alarmingly (for France) moving away from its past confrontations with the Federated Kingdoms towards neutrality. Also, Macao is bought back from the Portuguese, for a rather large price which was only reasonable considering the value of that port which Portugal, alas, is no longer able to defend efficiently against the Federates having lost Goa and East Timor during the Nine Years War. Civilian Chinese government has been established in Annam, replacing the old military protectorate. This and many other measures were taken to increase the Emperor's popularity all over the vast Qing Empire (+1 Confidence), in exchange for granting more power to local authorities (-1 Centralization).

Admiral Leon de Tocqueville, who previously established the French protectorate on Hawaii, has now been sent on yet another exploring expedition. He travelled to explore the east coast of Terra Australis, along the way establishing a colonial outpost in Fiji. Unlike the barren north of Australis (which some now want to rename into something French, with such versions as "Tocquevillia", "Ferdinandia" and "Nouvelle-Gaule" proposed), the eastern coast, albeit mountainous, seems rather more promising. A small island was also discovered further east; the natives there seem to be more ferocious and at the same time organized, but so far they seem to tolerate the French presence, trading with them for firearms.

Military Events:

Colonial powers reach out for Africa in force, but with different tactics. The Portuguese, in Kongo and Mozambique, are the most brutal of all, slaughtering all the natives they find on their march. This prompts quite heavy resistance, which was defeated but, combined with rebellions in those colonial lands already held and with tropical diseases, caused large casualties. The French are rather more peaceful, but still do not hesitate to fight the resistance they encounter while campaigning in Sahara and Cote d'Ivore; the huge supply problems and the unbearable heat caused many deaths for them as well. For no obvious reasons, Italians tried to colonize Namibia. Naturally, no real colonists came, but soldiers had no problems in taking over the coastal regions; any further advance, however, will leave them badly overstretched, and with the civil war at home it seems that Italian Namibia will have to be abandoned. The Poles are probably the most humane of colonizers, and they too gain some ground from their new colonies.

(-1 Portuguese division, -1 French division)

Before Kalat officially merged with Persia, just as Dost Babrak finally made up his mind... the Turkmen army invaded Kalat, and, before much of anything could be done, easily decimated the Kalatian armies. Only one-fifth of the Kalatian military later regroupped and, led by Dost Babrak's oldest son Shir Ya'qub ibn-Babrak, limped west, to the lands of his father-in-law Ardashir IV of Persia. The time has come for the Safavid dynasty's first foreign challenge...

(-Kalat as an independent nation, -1 Turkmen division)

Random Events:

The Islamic revolution in Persia gains much popular support; even though the Hosaynist forces are soon crushed, many volunteers join the army before the news of the victory spread (+5 divisions). During the combat, many innovations are made, most importantly "Allah's Needles", but other as well; the great effect of these weapons on the battlefield has caused the authorities to encourage further developments in the field of enigneering and weaponry (+1 Education). As the revolution succeeded, the Persian people were reinvigorated (+1 Culture) and rallied around their new leaders, especially ofcourse Shah Ardashir IV the Falcon (+2 Confidence). Persia continues to modernize, as new universities are set up (+1 Education) and all the people, even those of Sunni religion, are accepted in (+1 Culture).

North German separatism continues to grow (-1 HRE Culture)...

A flowering of Positivist literature in Poland begins (+1 Culture).

The reformist circles eagerly support Umberto I, and some of the Carbonaries actually reconcile with royal power (+1 Confidence).

Turkmen rally to the banners of their Khan (+5 divisions).

Josef Leu comes to power in Swiss Confederation under the banners of a new doctrine, Centralism, under which an authoritarian central government supervised democratic cantons (+1 Confidence).

Emperor Guangxu makes an unprecedented step of visting the lands of the Western Barbarians. This "Great Embassy" greatly increased the prestige of the Qing Chinese Empire, and, as Guangxu was infatuated with Western ideas, he, upon returning home, started numerous progressive reforms (+1 Confidence, +2 Education).

Revolutionary sentiments are spreading in France (-1 Confidence).

The Turkish army leadership is increasingly detached from reality and from its duty as well (-1 Military Leadership).

Lithuanians, Ukraineans, Germans and Russians call out for greater autonomy in Poland; a Confederalist manifest, "Rzeczpospolita Prawdi", is ever more popular (-1 Culture).

An alarming lack of discipline has been noticed in the Muscovitan army (-1 Army Training).

Spotlight:

Umberto's Reforms.

"Enlightened reform is, ofcourse, a good thing - but why run around breaking chairs?"
- Louis d'Orleans, French nobleman and humanist, "Essays on Republicanism". Year 1812.

King Umberto I was completely unlike his predecessors. Since the unification of Italy, the Savoyard monarchs upheld the doctrine of enlightened despotism, something supported by the masses unlike the fringe Carbonarian and Ultraclerical movements. As times changed, however, both groups received increasing amount of support. After the death of King Victor Amadeus III in 1841, urban violence erupted and the Pope tried to launch a coup d'etat; after order was restored by Victor Amadeus IV, the Ultraclericalists have practically eliminated the Carbonarian movement in the former Kingdom of Two Sicilies, whereas Piedmont and Lombardy were consolidated by the Carbonaries. Indeed, the latter gained an ever-larger following. But none would have expected crown prince Umberto to not only convert to what, in effect, was Republicanism, but also to become even more radical than the Carbonari leaders themselves.

On January 9th, 1860, King Umberto I came to power. He and a small group of his close friends soon begun working on a project of radical reforms. Everyone, even women, were to be granted suffrage after the age of 18 (compare with Carbonari program of universal male suffrage after 24). The king was, after a few years, to become a figurehead, giving all power to the Senate. French was to become the second language in Savoy [1] and Nice. Compulsory education for EVERYONE was to be introduced.

The reason nothing happened upon the first official statement of those plans was shock. Everybody was paralyzed. A few of the Carbonaries reconciled with the King, but the rest, naturally, suspected this to be some sort of a ploy. The Monarchists soon begun to rally around Umberto's brother Carlo Emanuele. The Ultraclericalists, using the wide dissent these reforms caused in Central and Southern Italy, have soon won over many of the more moderate conservatives. But all that was the preparations. Noone dared act at first, for it was clear that Umberto I had something on his mind - certainly he hasn't done THAT out of altruism. Either that... or he's mad, which was something the newly-formed "Carlist" faction was only too glad to exploit. Still, no signal for action came until 10th of March...

On that day in Rome, Italian army officers and Monarchist sympathisers marched towards Umberto's palace, demanding the repeal of those reforms. When the police tried to disperse them, the officers resisted, and though they fell back, they soon tried to launch a military coup. Those few forces in Rome that were loyal to Umberto held out long enough for him to flee north, for the most Republican city in Italy, Turin. The officers who took over Rome weren't sure what to do at first, but finally, decided to declare Umberto I mentally unfit for running Italy and declared that, instead, his younger brother Carlo Emanuele should take over the kingdom as regent. The Pope at first wanted to bless this, but after it turned out that Carlo didn't want to restore the Papal States, the Pope - Benedict XV - took the unprecedented step of leaving Vatican and traveling, while escorted by his most trustworthy Cardinals, to Naples. For Naples was by then seized by Ultraclericalist rebels.

As Autumn begun, Italy was a country divided. One king was in Turin with those few who remained loyal to him; another, in Rome, with the elite parts of the army; the Pope was in Naples, and in full control of the Two Sicilies; and in Venice, local Republicans and Nationalists declared independence. How could the actions of one man cause all this?

Simple. Italy, though united politically, never did unify socially and culturally. The agrarian south was always much more conservative than the liberal, industrial north; and the center was neither there nor here; petty regionalism was strong, especially in Corsica and Venice; and the Pope (no matter which one - all the Popes had no choice but to continue this struggle) was the traditional enemy of the Crown, constantly plotting to undermine it or to somehow force it to restore the Papal States. No doubt, the cunning old Benedict XV has used this moment - a false step of the government - to try and seize power. Yet, he, alone, was also not enough. Carlo Emanuele, for instance, was hardly a man to be content with anybody other than he ruling Italy, and as he also commanded a division of the guards, he naturally also chose this moment of weakness to strike. And Venice? In recent days, as tensions with the Holy Roman Empire decreased, more and more Venetians begun looking back to the good old days of the Most Serene Republic, or even to the autonomous status the city had under the Habsburg rule. The Venetian leaders also made good use of the anarchy that begun in Italy.

The civil war in Italy was on, after many years of badly-hidden rivalry. Who will emerge victorious? And indeed, will anyone at all?

Please support our cause against those radical madmen - the Ultraclericals and the Carbonaries who clouded my dear brother's mind alike! Whoever of them wins, they will lead Italy into an alliance with your enemies - it is only too clear. The only way to save Italy from joining the damnable Anglo-German alliance is for you to support the followers of enlightened monarchy, like the one that now exists in France.

[1] Not the Duchy of Savoy, but rather the small French-majority region of Savoy.

You can only invest one eco. point per turn in a project.

Its rather hard to recruit troops without holding any territory; the amount of troops a rebel group can recruit depends on more than just money (well, the same goes for all nations, but is especially true with rebel groups).

Lord_Iggy, and others, you're supposed to say how exactly you're growing economy, its too easy otherwise. :p

You can start with the questions, the death threats and so forth now. If anybody posted between the update and the map... well, he will probably regret it.
