DNES2: War and Civilization

War! War! War! War! War! WWAARRR!! :D

Well, I hope my war doens't turn out to be too big- it should have been a shot out of left field :mischief:......

Well, map and stats are done (which I will post), but due to messing around and bad time management, I didn’t leave myself enough time to finish the write-up, even to poor standards. Normally I would pull an all-nighter, but I really don’t want to do that tonight.

So, map attached to this post, new stats on front page momentarily. Actual update will have to be tomorrow night. Actually, you can probably guess what’s been going on without reading anything... So I thought I might as well upload it. But, obviously, please don’t make any announcements yet or anything, because some things aren’t quite as they appear.

I have a couple of PM’s prepared for certain players with feedback on covert stuff, but ill wait till tomorrow when the actual updates up.

I know this is sux0r. Some people sent orders about a week ago now, sorry for messing people about.

It seems like there's a lot more named cities then the last map. :D

I *still* didn't destroy Oru? And I didn't get a single trade center?

@ Alex, yes something of a population boom. Quite a few new cities all over the map for other people too.

@ Jalapeno_dude, you have 2 already, which are handling all the trade so far.

Sorry again this is a bit wierd. Might have been better not to show the map... Well, going offline now to sleep, will post real update tommorrow.

 Oh my god! There's an Empire after Taejon now on the map! :D The Taejon Empire!

I'm happy, It's looking better then ever. Also looking forward to the real update daft, nice work. Jalapeno, don't worry about the Oru, we've got bigger fish to fry. ;)

I see Myceane took High Almoth probably while my troops took a blunt of the fighting....

I am happy that in the end I was victorious anyway as I have more then doubled the size of Saxony and have spread the German influence over a farther then ever before.

My suprise attack on the Ys Leauge wasn't entirely successful. Damn- i was hoping to take Sulchan.

Of course it wasn't, and considering that the western trade outposts were valuble because of the Yssian trading presence, all you have taken now are some scraps of worthless land.

Prepare for Pictlands end. You too Kenbu (though negociation is possible for you)

@Panda, I'm sure we were meant to keep Etienarde? Considering you got Orient.

Santa Daft, I've been a very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very good little boy, so for Christmas can I have an update, and if you can make it before Christmas that would be udooles better. OOC: this got kinda big again, heh. Decided to give the RTW graphics a rest, but couldn’t think of anything else to replace them.

In Kya Taej, deep within the imperial palace, a sealed box is carefully and gracefully opened. Inside is an inscription bearing the name of the next Emperor of Taejon. The name is read out by a trusted imperial official, a Taoist priest of high renown. Gathered around stand the most powerful people in the land - the eldest sons of the deceased emperor, the highest-ranking military generals, and the most important provincial governors. Almost immediately, all of them are bowing down, all except one – a man destined to turn Taejon into a military superpower…

…

Out in the desert near Bantlwan, deep in the southern provinces of Umidia, Prince Hano makes a speech to his assembled army. Standing high upon a rocky outcrop, he calls on the soldiers to join him in rebellion against his father, the great King of Umidia, promising them riches and lands of their own. At the end of his speech, Prince Hano falls silent… And the silence remains for several long moments, as a swirling cloud of dust drifts across the plain, hiding the signs of fear and desperation that are beginning to appear in the prince’s expression… Then, as the wind dies down, and the dust clears, a great cheer begins to erupt from the soldiers - “Hano! Hano! Hano!”

…

Screaming their war chants, the warriors of Kenbu swarm through the gates of Utigan, charging headlong at the Yssian soldiers that await them. The streets of the colony are soon streaked with blood. For every Yssian that falls, at least two Kenbuan warriors share the same fate. And yet, the attack continues without pause. The last ships have already left harbour, setting sail with all they could take - only a handful of colonists. A large crowd is left gathered at the dockside - old men, women and children, awaiting their fate, as the sails slowly disappear over the horizon…

…

A great military parade marches through the wide streets of Agre - thousands of soldiers in perfect order, wearing fabulously decorated armour. Thousands more citizens look on from every sidestreet and rooftop. All around them are fountains and sculptures, and many wonderful buildings – several still under construction. The enlightened ruler, Bazilevs Konstantyn I, and Helen, his radiantly beautiful wife, gaze down at the parade from an ornate balcony, surrounded by a swarm of advisors – great artists, philosophers and architects are among them. Many, like Helen herself, are from Mycenae or the Argosian lands. An excited atmosphere of prosperity and progress grips the imperial capitol, yet a few old veterans are left to grumble for times gone by - times when foreign influences were few, and the old traditions were strong...

…

Resplendent in her golden armour, riding upon a noble horse, Queen Alayne rallies the warriors of Almoth - a vast numbers of soldiers, gathered amongst the ruins of an ancient fortress. The great Queen makes an impassioned speech, raising her sword to the sky, calling upon the sons and daughters of Almoth to defend their homeland. A beam of sunlight suddenly breaks through the cloudy sky. Tears are in her eyes, but the Queen’s voice is strong and unwavering, reaching deeply into the hearts of her assembled warriors. Waves of emotion sweep through the ranks, and soon a great battlecry is heard, a roar like nothing else on earth - a roar which would not easily be silenced…

…

A burning siege tower collapses outside the walls of Oriant, brought down by Catalyan catapults. Dozens of Campagnards are crushed, burned and killed… Yet thousands more press the attack, fighting their way onto the walls and down into the city. It is not long before the gates are opened from within. A great cheer goes up, and thousands of Anguile soldiers swarm through…Later, a handful of Catalyan ships are leaving harbour, blazing arrows raining down on them as they flee. Their occupants can only look back in despair, watching as the last Catalyan city in europe is engulfed in flames…

As the ‘hundred years war’ faded out, a golden age of great empires began to dawn across asia and the middle east. Times were harder for the european and african powers, but their ambitions were just as strong…

...

Spotlight: Dawn of Empires
Great reforms were taking place in Taejon, Ulakam and the Agrinese Empire. Perhaps the gentlest changes were in Taejon – an Imperial Censurate was established to combat corruption and abuses of power, along with a new tradition of the Sealed Imperial Succession, which (it was hoped) would prevent any succession crises or contests in future. This was an important development for stability - as the throne of Taejon gained more and more power, so too did its appeal for all would-be usurpers and conspirators. Meanwhile, the regulation of food prices, increasing literacy, increasingly crowded cities and the spread of Taoism were all impacting the lives of the common people. Indeed, the population of Taejon was now booming, especially in the settlements along the Taejon Valley itself. Within decades, several great new cities had arisen, where there had only been small towns before. Benevolent imperial rule and Toasist influence helped to keep the peace, while technology and organisation helped to create prosperity. The stage was set for a great expansion of the Taejon military…

Now to the Agrinese Empire, where there were some more controversial reforms taking place under the rule of Bazilevs Konstantyn I. The Agrinese peoples were no more decadent than any other rich civilisation had been, but Konstantyn seemed determined to avoid stagnation in the new age of peace. The empire was reorganised into provinces, governed by a mostly-efficient bureaucracy, the first of its kind in the world - with tests and exams to ensure that important civil positions went only to the most competent. Meritocracy was another change – high achievers from all walks of life were awarded with hereditary titles and places within the nobility of the empire. The enlightened Konstantyn I was also a patron of education, culture, art, and architecture.

The Great Library was rebuilt in Atil, becoming home to several literarily societies. On the outskirts of Argos, thousands of Agrinese workers toiled for years to restore the weather-beaten faces of the Great Pyramids, adding various new touches in the Agrinese style. Many fine new buildings were constructed across the empire - temples, libraries, and theatres. Agre itself saw major construction work. A Great Embassy was constructed in the captiol, and many new contacts were established in all three continents - trade routes were revived, and many foreign talents were invited into the empire. Although the imperial budget did not stretch as far as Konstantyn I would have liked, the centre of Agre became a very beautiful place. The poorer parts of the city nonetheless remained poor, although all benefited from a new aqueduct and sewage system. The mastery of concrete and engineering by the Agrinese was a great aid to all these efforts.

However, not all were happy with these developments. Konstantyn I was an admirer of Agrosian and Mycenean cultures, most of his advisors and artisans were from those lands. It was felt by many that he favoured the ‘hellenistic’ peoples within the empire above the other elements of the population, and that traditional cultures were being undermined by all kinds of foreign influences. In particular, Konstantyn I kept only one wife, and encouraged others to do the same - some saw this as outrageous behaviour. In other circumstances, there might have been talk of rebellion – but after the exhausting wars of previous decades, there was a sense that a time of rest was needed. While the former Bazilev (and soldier’s favourite) Baralyk II still lived, one word from him could have sent the empire into civil war… But he remained supportive of his son and the new reforms. By the time Baralyk II died, most of the old guard had been dead for some time, and the new order was well established. In any case, had any rebellions begun, it is unlikely they would have succeeded. After all, Konstantyn I may have been a patron of the arts, but he did not ignore the military – it too was reformed. The conscripts had been allowed to return home, or to join as regular soldiers. The former levy spearmen, hoplites, and pikemen were reorganised into a single new standard (Agrinese Pikemen), while the formerly-Altynai ‘Altyn Guard’ crossbowmen appeared in greater numbers, and ‘Baghatur’ cavalry from Altynai lands took the place of standard horsemen.

Now, finally, to the Ulakam Empire, where the changes were the most voliatile. Indeed, they proved fatal for several powerful warlords – poisoned, it is said, by the hand of the new Kahn himself, as the first act of his new reforms. As with the Agrinese, the Ulakam Empire was now reorganised into provinces, ruled by the most able and loyal governors that could be found, with the Kahn as official ruler of all territory. And, as with the Agrinese, the Ulak leaders hired many foreign advisors and talents, but went even further, including many skilled metalworkers and merchants of all kinds in their plans. Altin Tiepe became a very cosmopolitan city, perhaps more so than anywhere else on earth. The appearance of the Ulakam captiol was transformed within a few years, as many new building projects were undertaken (with considerable help from slave labour). Foreign architecture was mixed with traditional Ulak styles, with some splendid results. Some travellers even say that Altin Tiepe is the most beautiful city in the world (but it is doubtful that these same people have also seen Agre, Panga, and Kya Taej!)

The new Kahn now hoped for many foreign immigrants into his new empire. But unlike the foreign talents who could be bought with money, the common people of the neighbouring lands stayed well away. Ulakam had become well-known for its slavery and brutal repression, both of which continued to the present day. Not only that, but bitter fighting was breaking out across the empire... It would take time for Ulakam to change its reputation abroad.

Great Embassy is a new wonder for the Aginese Empire

Military Events:
Ulakam civil war
The warlords of Ulakam may have been killed, but some had a large number of very loyal supporters, many of whom were outraged enough to rise in rebellion against the new order. For years, the Kahn was forced to march back and forth across the empire, engaging in many battles against the forces of the warlords. It wasn’t quite the glorious new beginning the Kahn had wanted… But the empire had an advantage with the appearance of the ‘Ranger’ troops, formed by the order of the Kahn himself. These troops were able to infiltrate into rebel-held areas (which were often the more remote and rugged regions), and wear down their forces with ambushes and assassinations, as well as joining in pitched battles. Eventually the Kahn was able to secure his authority over the empire, and even expanded its borders - The Azar peoples in the north west had aided the rebels, and were now forced from their lands around Taigyr.

Ulakam: -9 Horse Archers, -8 Spearmen, -1 War Elephant

Talani peoples move into europe
Meanwhile, the Agrinese Empire also expanded its borders, almost by accident… In the north east borderlands, the Talani peoples attacked the Librian tribes, conquering some of them, and recruiting many warriors from their ranks. Seeing that the Agrinese Empire remained strong, the Talani then drove eastwards in search of easier plunder. They overran the north of Motria, killing the high king of Amtria in battle, while recruiting even more warriors from the wild lands of the north. The Talani then arrived at the borders of Saxon and Gothic lands…

But back in the west, the Agrinese were faced with much reduced opposition from the weakened Librians. Local generals were then able to ‘bring stability to the area’ - IE create a new imperial province.

Agrinese Empire: -3 Agrinese Pikemen,-2 Swordsmen, -2 Baghatur, -2 Mercenary Horse Archers
Motria: -4 Tribal Spearmen, -2 Tribal Swordsmen, -2 War Wagons, -1 Hoplites, -3 Horsemen
* Military stength of the Talani is said to be roughly 8 horse bowmen, 8 horsemen, and 20 various infantry

Fall of Almoth
Returning to europe, fighting continued between Almoth and the Saxon-Goth alliance. But with the capable leadership of Queen Alayne, and with the motivation of defending their sacred homelands, the Almothians were initially able to inflict some crushing defeats on their enemies, especially the Goths. The Saxons pressed the attack along the southern coastline, but gained only a little ground, despite loosing many men. The forces of Mycenae now entered the fray, with an attack on High Almoth from the west. But this too was a bloody failure, as the Mycenaean hoplites and pikemen had a tough time amongst the ragged hills and mountains, which was much better suited the ambush-tactics of the Almothian warriors.

Although Queen Alayne had bought some time, the enemies of Almoth were regrouping, and the defending warriors were increasingly outnumbered… Even with two or three invaders killed for every one defender, it was a rate of attrition that could not be sustained. With news spreading of the murder, rape, pillage and enslavement being carried out by the Saxons and their allies, many Almothians chose to flee their lands altogether. Almoth still had a small navy, and still controlled a small stretch of coastline. The ruler of Pisae, just a short distance across the sea to the south, offered a refuge for the Almothian people. With the Mycenean fleet busy raiding the Umidian shores in the south, the coast was clear for many people to sail away.

But it wasn’t long before the armies of Saxony and Mycenae attacked again, this time breaking the back of Almothian resistance, and taking control of the coast. Queen Alayne was probably killed in battle, though no-one knows for sure. Some say she managed to escape overseas with some of her generals. In any case, High Almoth was finally captured by the Myceneans after a long and brutal siege, leaving the Saxons and Goths to divide up the eastern lands. The fall of Almoth has been a bloodbath, one that may have little benefit for the conquerors, as all have suffered many dead in this war. Almoth’s culture and traditions will also be hard to eradicate.

Meanwhile, with their recent gains against Almoth, and increasing influence from Saxony, the western Goths have become a mainly-civilised power. The country of Gothland has now been declared. However, the county’s army is severely weakened, and now there is the possibility of attack from the Talani…

Fall of Catalya
With yet more reinforcements, the forces of Anguile pressed the siege of Oriant and Lisht. There was little the outnumbered defenders could do.
An all-out effort by the Catalyan navy managed to defeat a half-hearted blockade – but even with supplies getting through, the defences of these cities were being continually worn down. Inevitably, both Oriant and Lisht fell to Anguile, and Catalya was kicked out of europe... The final victory came just in time for Anguile, as there had been increasing instances of mutiny and rebellion within the army (the republic of Anguile remains somewhat unstable at present).

Across the straights, Catalya was also being kicked out of africa. A Umidian army attacked Jaen, but was almost beaten back. Catalya had stationed some of its best troops in the city. But with news of the fall of Oriant, the dispirited defenders decided to surrender. In exchange for keeping some autonomy, the Catalyans of Jaen agreed to help the Umidians construct a new navy...

Meanwhile, the Ys League sent another force to attack Logrono, but this was pre-empted by an army from the minor power of Kantu. The African mercanries hired by the Catalyans at Logrono had already rebelled, as they could no longer be paid. The Yssian commanders decided not to get involved in war with Kantu, as they soon had trouble elsewhere…

Finally, there was pro-Anguile rioting in Etienarde, so much so that the Yssian leadership was obliged to evacuate the city and hand it over the Anguile Empire. It was feared that taking measures to repressing the majority-Anguile population would seriously hurt relations...

Anguile: -7 Campagnards, -2 Grognards, -3 Galleys
Umidia: -3 Horse Bowmen, -1 Spearmen, -2 Hoplite
Catalya: -6 Catal Infantry, -2 Mercenary Bowmen, -2 Mercenary Horse Bowmen, -2 Mercenary Hoplites, -2 Galleys

The Tano League
The Catalyan republic was now reduced to the island cities of Tano and Aragan. The leaders of the republic had been scattered – some captured, some choosing exile in other lands. The army had disintegrated, and much of the navy had turned to privateering. And then, the governors of Aragan decalred their neutrality - denouncing the Catalan republic, in the (perhaps vain) hope that this would prevent an invasion by Anguile.

Catalya was no more. The Tano league emerged, based on the islands of Pisae and Tano itself. The islands are now home to many refugees from Catalya and Almoth, possibly including some of the former rulers and nobility of those countries. However, the Tano League has so far taken a strictly neutral stance towards the neighbouring powers.

Division of Pictland
After an increasing amount of fighting and disorder, a new Monarchy came to power in the Pictish heartlands. Being heavily influenced by the traditionalist warrior aristocracy, it immediately took a hostile stance towards the Ys League. A rather large pictish force set sail to attack Lenyahd (over which the Picts had ancient claims), and were successful in capturing it from Ys. Meanwhile, the Yssian-influenced eastern portion of the country had broken away, and formed the ‘North League’. A fledgling republic has taken shape here, borrowing heavily from the Yssian model. It is not yet officially at war with the new kingdom of Pictland.

The Ys League has yet to respond to Pictish aggression. The Picts have a rather large navy - although not as sophisticated and experienced as the Ys League, they have a fine naval tradition of their own. Fighting the Picts may put serious strain on the Yssian navy…

Coastal raids against Umidia
Given the demands of the campaign against Almoth, Mycenae could not commit as many troops as it would have liked to its raids along the Umidian coast. The Umidians were also very well prepared, with large forces lying in wait all along the northern shores, and carefully laid out plans to trap and destroy any Mycenean troops that ventured inland. Rarely did the Umidian and Mycenean forces actually meet in battle... When they did, it was generally the Myceneans who came off worst.

But, with such a long expanse of coast to cover, the Myceneans were able to cause some serious damage. No cities were captured, but some had their surrounding lands pillaged and burnt before the Umidians could respond. Traders along the coastal roads also ran the risk of being caught by Mycenean raiders. More disruption was caused when Mycenae began using the Umidian coast as a dumping ground for its criminals and undesirables (including some Librian barbarians captured from the far north!). Although most of these varied characters were soon captured and dealt with by the Umidian authorities, a few were able to establish themselves as bandits along the coastal roads, and a few more managed to blend into the slums of Umidian cities…

Meanwhile, Mycenae also paid the mercenaries of Buto to send their own forces against Umidia. But the Butoans were much less successful… They attacked independently, and most were slaughtered by the well-prepared Umidian defenders. Panic began to grow in Buto, as there had long been rumours of an impending Umidian invasion.

These fears were unfounded, as the Mycenaean fleet continued to dominate the seas, shrugging off a carefully-planned attack by Umidian ships in the waters near Abydon, along with attacks by Catalyan privateers (most likely paid for by Umidia). Mycenae extended its blockade further and further east, and was able to attack the shipyards near Jaen and Avaris, where many new ships were being built with help from the former Catalyans. Nonetheless, Umidia’s fleet strength continued to rise, and was eventually enough to retake control of the eastern coast. But, there has yet to be a serious showdown between the Mycenaean fleet and the rebuilt Umidian navy.

Rebellion in southern Umidia
Control of the Umidian army had long been split between the king and his sons, each in command of his own force. This was designed to prevent any one from becoming too powerful. Yet, it also proved dangerous. Prince Hano was also last in line to the throne, least favoured by his father, and in control of the weakest and least prestigious force, left guarding the southern borderlands. Unfortunately for Umidia, Hano was also a ruthless and ambitious man, and he did have one talent - persuading other people to do what he wanted.

And so Prince Hano launched a rebellion at Bantlwan, with the backing of most of his army (but not including any of the Immortal Warriors, since their code of honour prevented them from taking any action against the king), and established a rebel state, which was very modestly named after himself!

The other Umidian armies where busy against Catalya and Mycenae, and Hano has so far made no attempt to move north, so little actual fighting has taken place so far.

Rise of the south african powers
A small army from the Kingdom of Saruk took a beating from the tough Xhosa tribes as it moved further into their territory. Just enough land was captured to ensure access to the spice-growing lands along the banks of the Cavar river.

Saruk: -3 Impi

Meanwhile, the Kingdom of Saruk sent a larger force against the Altynai colonies of Tasai and Timbu. This was most likely motivated by news of the Altynai’s defeat and exile from mainland asia. The demoralised and overstretched forces of the Altynai could do little to resist, especially when the Sarukians employed their fearsome war elephants. But, while a considerable amount of loot was captured from Tasai, the trade routes run by the Altynai soon began to collapse…

Saruk: -2 Spearmen, -1 Horsemen
Altynai: -5 Impi, -1 Camelmen

Across the sea, the forces of Kenbu managed to overrun the Yssian colony of Utigan. Kenbu had also built a small navy of surprisingly sophisticated galleys, and further attacks where mounted on the other nearby colonies of the Ys, but these were easily defeated by the better-equipped and much more experienced Yssian navy. Kenbu also profited as neighbouring tribes were influenced (or coerced) into joining Kenbu under the new republic system of leadership.

Kenbu: -4 Tribal Spearmen, -1 Galley
Ys League: -1 Kornden Militia, -1 Coastal Levy

Both Kenbu and Saruk have greatly expanded in power in recent years, and established their superiority over the foreign colonies. However, this may be the end of the lucrative trade route from europe to asia via south africa...

Kaladar, and the collapse of Altynai
The city of Iskender on north west coast of africa was originally founded by settlers from what is now the Agrinese Empire. But rather than be ceded to Mycenae in a peace treaty, the rulers of Iskender chose independence. After roughly a century, a powerful city-state had emerged, which was in a good position to gain from the collapse of Altynai power…

The loss of the african colonies was the last straw for the struggling Altynai kingdom, already greatly humiliated and demoralised by its utter defeat against the Agrinese. Altynai authority began to evaporate. The small island colony of Nysar, just off the coast of Saruk, chose to become part of the Ys League. The island of Amil became an important trading port under Kaladarian rule.

Officially, the legacy of Altnyai continues, and a Baraklyd king continues to rule the island city of Sar… but disorder and in-fighting are occurring even here. Altynai can no longer be considered to be any kind of power.

Videssian, Muskovyan and Samar expansion
Videssos gained a rather large amount of new territory. The uncivilised Vaspurikan tribes were finally defeated after several tough battles, and the borders of Videssos expanded to meet the Ulakam Empire in the south. Meanwhile, the Vaspurikan Infantry of the Videssian army were wisely kept away from the fighting with their uncivilised brethren, instead they were sent on many expeditions into the north, where vast swathes of new territory were brought under control.

However, Videssos gained some new and potentially troublesome neighbours – the Nakuri, a fierce but increasingly civilised people in the north east, the Azar people, exiled from the Ulakam empire because of their support for rebel warlords, and the Tuva, a coalition of tribes united against Samar expansion. Samark had indeed been growing in size, reaching the videssian sea and pushing against Muskovya in the north. Muskovya, too, had expanded, reaching a mutual border with Videssos in the west. With all this expansion and the founding of new cities, some major trade routes began flowing through the area.

Videssos: -2 Vaspurakan infantry, -3 Spearmen, -1 Namdaleni Cavalry

Meanwhile, the splinter colony of Sotevag has been established on the eastern coast of the Videssian sea. Although founded by Videssians, its people have broken away from Videssian rule, and are practising a different and controversial form of the Videssian religion – although believers in Phos, they do not share the view that Phos’s victory is inevitable.

The struggle of Oru continues
Vicious fighting continued to take place between the armies of Ormash and the tenacious Orian fanatics of the north. Officially, the Ormash generals had orders to keep advancing against this last pocket of resistance, but only half-hearted efforts where made to venture into the northern mountains. Those that ventured too boldly tended to lose their lives, as fanatical Orian assassins began targeting the generals and officers of the Ormash forces.

However, seeing that Ormash could not be expelled from the Oru homelands, the surviving Orian forces consigned themselves to a long struggle of resistance, many began melting away into surrounding areas. The northern mountains remained free of Ormash control, but Oru no longer exists as any kind of formal country.

Taejon’s new military might – end of the Yaktan civil war
After centuries of (mostly) peace and prosperity, Taejon was rich, full of resources and manpower. Taejon’s army was already fairly strong, now it was about to double in size. The new emperor of Taejon directed vast amounts of money and effort into training and equipping many thousands of new soldiers. Of course, there was a reason behind this military buildup. The leaders of Zakutan were suspicious of Taejon’s motives, but had their hands full fighting against Yutan and Gyutan. In any case, Taejon had always been somewhat insular, and had never been known for its invasions of other lands. But an invasion by Taejon armies was about to begin nonetheless.

Firstly, however, Taejon sent its armies into Gyutan. Despite the resources and planning put into the operation, it was a disappointing start for Taejon’s campaigns in the east. Forces sent as feints against several Gyutan cities found themselves surrounded and cut-off, and facing constant harassment. The inexperienced Taejon troops fared badly, as the more experienced Gyutan forces continued a hit-and-run style of warfare that had protected their borders for decades. Due to enemy action, and sheer bad luck, the Taejon army was unable to make the most of its strength. Ismatan was captured, but the rest of Gyutan remained intact. Taejon suffered the highest casualties, but Gytuan’s losses were equally serious, if not worse, when compared with the smaller size of their overall army. It’s a rate of attrition that Gyutan would not want to see again.

Gyutan: -3 Brutes, -2 Horsemen, -3 Horse Archers, -3 Spearmen, -2 Swordsmen
Taejon: -6 Pikemen, -3 Composite Bowmen, -2 Horsemen, -3 Armoured Horsemen

Meanwhile, larger Taejon armies had invaded Zakutan. Here they had nothing but success. The generals were quick to use the experience gathered in Gyutan, and were able to employ their troops to better effect. Zaktuan also had a more convential approach to warfare compared to Gyutan, favouring large battles and direct confrontation. Thus, for the first time, the true potential of Taejon’s heavy composite bowmen was seen – causing complete devastation to the enemy infantry and cavalry, whenever they presented themselves in close formation. Together with Taejon’s masses of infantry and cavalry, there was nothing Zakutan could do - even their formidable Brute cavalry were brushed aside. Taejon’s invasion was also well-timed, in that Yutan (with whom Taejon had made an alliance) had just defeated a large Zakutan army in the vicinity of Bingol, causing heavy losses to both sides.

The collapse of Zakutan was suprisngly quick. The usurper-king, Qui-Zian, was killed by Taejon arrows near Orung. There was no-one with the strength of will to replace him. Ongan rebels were also beginning to appear, declaring support for Taejon. Zaktuan’s army disintegrated, and its cities were only too willing to surrender. Taejon’s armies advanced further than planned, taking control of Zonguldak itself and the far south.

Gyutan still remained in the north, but the ‘civil war’ was effectively over… Although Yutan seems reluctant to claim the former title of Yaktan.

Karthian crisis!
After many years of peace between Agre and Ulakam, the leader of Karthia suddenly announced his support for the Ulaks. Although officially an ally and vassal of Agre, Karthia made territorial concessions to Ulakam, and made half-hearted efforts to expel all Agrinese forces from its borders. This resulted in some instances of fighting, although there were no significant losses on either side.

The Agrinese generals in the west quickly sent strong reinforcements to the region, and Karthians backed down. However, the territorial concessions to Ulakam where not retracted, and Ulak forces had already moved in to occupy the areas around Ulasan and Amalu. The peace between Agre and Ulakam is looking increasingly fragile...

All other events:
A great new military academy has been built by the Mycenaeans, where the ‘Art of War’ can be studied – a detailed and highly influential book on military strategy, said to have been written by ‘Shan Teph’, a mysterious exile from somewhere in southern asia… (Art of War completed in Mycenae). This has done much to raise confidence and quality of training. However, the ranks of the Mycenaean army have been badly depleted by recent conflicts, and the army is not looking terribly strong at the moment…

Several years of severe flooding have caused much destruction in western Ormash… (Ormash: -1 infrastructure )

Pangan voyages continued into the vast expanses of the western ocean. But even with their ‘Ki’ compasses, many ships were lost in storms, or just lost altogether… There is now a fair amount of fear among the crews. Nonetheless, two colonies were founded on the two islands discovered so far. Both islands are quite mountainous, the northernmost one also has large areas of forest. Both are home to strange tribes of a culture unlike anything in asia. (Panga: -2 Galley)

Meanwhile, the Yssian colony of Kemperof was founded on the islands far to the east of Ys. These islands had been known to Yssian explorers for over a century, but the colonisation of the south african region had been the priority until recently.

Herkaleia was ceded from Umidia to the Agrinese Empire as part of a peace treaty. Trade routes through this region have been revived, benefiting all the mediterranean powers at the expense of the Ys League and the south african powers. Indeed, with the collapse of Altynai, and the attacks on their former colonies (as well as those of the Ys League), the trade routes south of Saruk have been all but lost. But in northern africa, Umidia has done much to encourage overland trade through the Umidian heartlands, which is mostly compensating for the blockade imposed by Mycenae. Meanwhile, trade is booming all across central asia, with the great powers mostly at peace with each other.

Videssos and its neighbours are also seeing an increase in trade, aided by growing contact with Rayamese colonies in the west. However, Khiman pirates have continued to harass shipping in this area.

The ancient texts and tablets, which the Altynai stole from the great library, have been returned to Agre from the island of Sar… Most of them, at least. In the aftermath of the hundred years war, it is impossible to tell what is missing. There are rumours of other texts being lost at sea, or being lost in Tasai when it was attacked by the Kingdom of Saruk…

Taoism has spread across most of Taejon, and into Panga and Ormash. Oruism remains strong in its traditional lands, as well as in Gyutan. The worship of Phos has been spread by the expansion of the Videssos, and has also taken route in Ulakam and Muskovya. Meanwhile, Tarrism is spreading across the seas from Kenbu to saruk and the nearby islands.

Random issue: Umidia
Priestesses of the Oracle in Abydon have told of a terrifying vision, a great cloud of fire bursting out of the mountains between Oryx and Jaen, covering the land in fire and ash… This may well be nothing more than deranged hallucination. Preparations could be made to evacuate people, and extra stores of food could be bought, but this may cause panic among the people. On the other hand, the people would not like to see the King ignore the prophecy of the highly respected priestesses…

Random issue: Mycenae
The Saxons have been committing foul acts of terror upon the Almothian peoples, wiping them out in order to replace them with their own settlers. If Mycenae formally guarantees protection for the Almothian people in the lands which it has conquered, it would be a great way to ensure their loyalty…

…

NPC Diplo:

To Agrinese Empire
From Karthia

Hail to the great Bazilevs! The unpleasantness in our recent relations is unfortunate. Please understand that we only seek peace and stability in the region. We hope you will understand that the time has come to withdraw your forces from our lands, so that peace can prevail.

To Taejon
From Yutan

Hail to the great Emperor of Taejon! We congratulate you on your many glorious achievements!

transfer.png

We politely request the transfer of these areas to out control, as agreed originally. We are also informing you of our decision not to claim the title of Yaktan – that nation is no more, we will not return to the stagnation of the past. As for the fate of Gyutan lands, we await your thoughts on this matter…

To Taejon
From Ongan peoples (in Orung, Tenga, and Ohan)

We have aided your forces, will you grant us extra autonomy under your rule?

To Rayam
From Shimazu

Our peoples have cooperated well in the past. We propose a formal peace and trade agreement, for the benefit of all!

To Videssos
From Muskovya

Hail! We propose peace, trade, and mutual defence against Samar or barbarian aggression…

To Videssos
From Sotevag

Despite the differences in our religious views, we hope there can be peace between us in future.

To Umidia
From Prince Hano

I ask only that you accept my rule in the south. I have claimed these lands of my own, and I seek nothing else. Now let there be peace!

To Saxony
From the Talani

You are weakened from your wars with Almoth – grant us supplies and safe passage through your lands, and we will not trouble your people.

To Saxony
From Gothland

We cannot trust these outsiders! We must gather the full strength of all our peoples and march against this new threat!

To Saxony
From the East Goths

Although we wish the Saxon people well, know that we will not aid Gothland or Saxony in wars that do not concern us also.

Possible Rebellions:
The almothians are very hostile to the occupiers, especially the ones that commit genocide against them!
Ongan peoples may cause a wider rebellion, spreading into the borders of Pangan land, unless a deal can be made with Taejon.
The peoples of former Oru lands have a small chance of rebelling – this is more likely if the Ormash armies move away from the region.
The conquered peoples of former Altnyai territory in asia have a very small chance of rebelling.
Catalyan peoples are too exhausted and dispirited to rebel at present.

Spending Points Results:
Kenbu: 1 point on science
Mycenae: 1 point split on various things, mainly military. Art of War completed.
Saruk: nothing specified, saved up
Taejon: 2 points created a rather large military buildup, another 1 point on boosting the economy
Panga: 1 point on science (no immediate effect, since its harder to increase the higher levels)
Ulakam: 1 point on economic boost. 1 point on creation of ranger UU, and ensuring loyalty of most of the military.
Umidia: 1 point on increasing naval power and training
Saxony: 1 point increasing troop training (although Almoth campaign was still very tough, it would have been even worse without this)
Agrinese Empire: 1 point on reorganisation, stability, and infrastructure. 1 point on science and cultural increase. A little of both went towards the Great Embassy wonder.
Anguile: 1 point increasing the number of Campagnard troops, 1 point on economy
Ys League: NPCified, nothing spent.
Videssos: 1 point increasing infrastructure and creating roads.
Ormash: 1 point increasing economy and trade

Bonus Points:
+1 for Das (Agrinese Empire), Krimzon (Ulakam Empire), Neverwonagame2 (Kenbu) and Taejon (Alex994), all for stories.

Notes:
Minor losses suffered by NPC nations expanding into unclaimed/barbarian lands are not mentioned anymore
Maybe some graphics next time!
@Das, let me know if you want those new UU altered in any way.
@ Andis-1, this is indeed an age when naval battles are more like floating land battles – but for simplicity, all naval forces are assumed to come with their own soldiers and marines.
@Neverwonagame2, id like to call the religion just ‘Tarrism’ if that’s ok. Since there hasn’t been any other kind of Tarrism in the world yet!

Check out updated UU info, Religion info, terrain map and new religion map (rough beta version) on first page (quick link here)
