Failed to Initialize Renderer

It's not drivers - just spent a few hours going back with my ATI 9800 drivers and no luck. Did complete uninstalls/installs too...

I get the distinct feeling that this game didn't go through very rigorous quality assurance testing.

I am having the same issue also. I have a 2 gig P4, 1 gig RAM, Ati 9600xt 256mb RAM, using driver version 5.8, directx 9C, and windows is fully patched. Please help. I need my fix.

I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling after rebooting system.

I have the same problem. AMD 1.4 ghz, 512 ram, ATI Radeon 9550 (256 vram.) I've tried the Catalyst drivers from 5.7 to the most recent with no luck. Everything is set appropriately on my machine, but the game will not run.

Same here,
meet the hardware specs easily,
newest drivers, fresh winxp install.
Must admit i haven't yet updated my winxp beyond sp2. Could that be it ?

Nope, you only need SP1 to run the game according to the reqs. So you're already good to go.

I don't think so because I am fully patched as of yesterday and I'm not able to run it. I also just downloaded the Directx9c installer from microsoft and reinstalled it thinking maybe the version with the game was bad and still no dice. This is killing me.

i have SP2. is this an ATI only thing? or do we have some NVIDIA people experiencing this too?

chiming in with the same problem.

Ive got a radeon X800, P4 3.6e, Gig of ram

It has to be a card problem, Seems everyone posting here is and ATI user.

Same problem as everyone else...

Specs:
Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop
P4 2.8 Ghz
1 gig ram
256 Meg ATI Radeon Mobility 9800 graphics card
Driver version (from Dell) 8.162.0.0 (8/3/05) - the lastest available
DirectX version 9.0c

Tried changing the display resolution in the .ini file thinking that might be it and it didn't help either. Anybody else have any ideas?

Set the logging indicator on:
LoggingEnabled = 1

Now a bunch of files are spawned in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Logs

The init file shows that :
[1384.562] DBG: Input Init
[1384.578] DBG: Engine Init
[1392.031] ERR: Initialize Renderer failed - parameters:
- width = 1024
- height = 768
- flags = 0xc
- hwnd = 0xf021a
- adaptrid = 0
- deviceid = 1
[1392.031] DBG: Failed to Initialize Renderer - Check DirectX Version

Even though I had the resolution set in the ini file to be 1280x800, it starts to initialize at 1024x768. The adaptrid=0 looks worrisome as well, as if the engine cannot recognize the video adapter...

I have an almost identical setup at work to my home machine (where it does not work). Both definitely have X800s with fairly recent drivers. It doesn't work on one (home machine) but I just drove to work and confirmed that it works here. So it's not something straightforward like drivers, it seems.

[4388.890] ERR: Initialize Renderer failed - parameters:
- width = 1024

- flags = 0x8
- hwnd = 0x40104
- adaptrid = 0
- deviceid = 1
[4388.890] DBG: Failed to Initialize Renderer - Check DirectX Version

Same here.
Does not care whether I tell it to start with another resolution, or whether screen resolution fits the 1024x768 or not.

Anybody get past this renderizing problem?

I can't get that 3D Analyzer to work with the game either... I load the exe into the Analyzer and then press RUN and --- nothing happens ---

I've gone through playing with the debug options and nothing gives me any errors worth working with. I'm getting the same failed log message everyone else is.

Just in case the techs check in here. A copy of the error log.

This appears to be a huge problem across the net with people unable to run the game with an ATI card. I hope there is a hotfix released today.

ITS THE DAMN GRAPHICS CARDS!!!!!!! don't bother doing anything else!!!! I just took my Radeon 9550 out and put my old geforce card back in.....Thank the lord I kept the old card!!!! Anyway, like magic the game works!!!! I am so pissed right now I don't even want to play this stupid game now!!!!! Anyway I wish they had some better support so we all wouldn't run around like idiots trying to try everything and anything to fix it!!!!!

I guess we have to wait for a patch!!!!
