NCG 3: The Rebirth

Nice round. It has been ages I've gotten techs from huts.
Our second city should be the gold one.
our third? banana, rice and cows city, near the jumbo's.
Much closer to home there is the cow and fish city.
For techs, I would go wheel, agri, ah, then meditation for the partheneon in our second city.

We should have, if you crank out 2 settlers with escorts, and then start on stonehenge and oracle in the cap after building a worker for the second city.
Farm everything in the second city, so we can whip the partheon.

Hackapell, some regards:

About the pictures: You should use camera flying ( edit the CivilizationIV.ini file in the entry AllowCameraFlying to 1 ( default is 0) and in game press Ctrl-Alt-F). It permits views from every angle of the game and eliminates those annoying clouds

2nd city: I would settle on the gold. You lose the ability to mine it, but you have two food resourses and some floodplains. And you have a extra coin in your treasury right of the bat ( that makes a lot of diference in the beggining of the game )

Tech path: are you planning to found Judaism ASAP? If then, you can't do the most powerful slingshot in the the game, the CS lightbulbing with a GP (Monotheism must be blocked by the absence of masonry ( another catch: no Pyramids) ). IMHO you don't need to found more than 3 religions to go cultural, and you can Oracle CoL and and bulb Philo with a GS ( after CS ), founding Confucionism and Taoism and get a enormous tech lead.

My two euro cents

I have a nitpick about presentation. It looks much better (as well as saves some space to upload here at civfanatics if you upload your pictures to http://photobucket.com/ and use the tags (conveniently provided by photobucket to display the pictures full screen here without the clicky.

If you end up doing lots of NGCs the upload space will be eaten by save game posts (I believe Sisiutil has had to go back and delete a bunch of old saves to make space for his new ALCs). Or that may have been Aelf. So this is a valid concern besides just the aesthetics.

good advice everyone.
Vale, I'll give Photobucket a try. This is the first one of these series I'm doing, so bear with me here, and we'll get through this. r_rolo1 gave me that site and Imageshack, which I used, but I'll do some more experimentation with that.
r_rolo1; I've tried to get the flying camera enabled, but it's never worked for me in my games.:badcomp: I'll experiment with it in my off-line game as Tokugawa.
For the tech path, I've popped masondry from a goody hut, so the CS slingshot is out of the question. I may be able to fond Judaism, but it's not a priority; much more important is that I research priesthood and start the oracle to get a free tech and religion, as it seems we're going to go crazy with wonders this game. Your path of grabbing religions is also the path I usualy use, as Philo is on the way to Liberalism.
Re: second city; I see 3 food resources(sugar, corn and cow) and I can get all four resources if I settle 1W of the corn. If you can justify your placement for the second city, do so, but a dotmap would really help.

Sorry, can't open my the save to take a closer look. I've broken my disc. (don't ask how :()
I'd settle directly above the gold on th plains tile. This way we would have 4 hills for wonder building, and of course more floodplains for cottages or farms to whip.

I would add that the extra coin on the city square ( making from it a 2F 1H 2C tile) would speed your research more than waiting for the city gets to size 2 ( you would need to work a food tile to be able to work the gold and still grow).

P.S I won't do to you a dotmap, because i'm absolutely terrible with them ( have to do them on paper, because I change my mind so many times about minor cities that any other way would be almost impossible )

Here's a dotmap, although it was harder to dot with clouds, unexplored map, and other things.

Another note:

Someone mentioned settling on the gold, and while I like that, I just hate giving up the mine. It might be better overall to settle on the gold.

The second city is a no brainer isnt it? Sugar, food, gold, production.

After that the world's your oyster.

BTW with the uploading of images, it's a good idea to reduce them down from full size so that the reader doesnt have to scroll across to read the post that goes with it. Mine is 700 ? (don't know what unit) down from 1025 or so.

good dotmaps everyone:goodjob:
Mu'min, what order are those cities in? your dotmap is the one that i'm naturally inclined towards, but I can't figure out which city goes when.

Sorry:blush: , no problem, ive updated the dotmap above.

I like mice's second city. It gives you gold, cow, sugar, corn, and many flood plains to help with SE or as a commerce city with cottages.

I haven't seen it mentioned, but I'd also look at a 3rd city 1N of the sheep. It would share a couple of tiles with the capital and a FP with the 2nd city, but it gives you one FP of its own, the sheep, and a freshwater lake that is 3F/2C with a lighthouse.

Mu'min's #1 loses 2 FPs with little benefit by going 1E. It would reduce overlap with a city 1N of the sheep, though.

I also think mice's city is good, but there's a lot of desert that would go unused. I think 1E form that point would be best, because there more farmable grassland and you get all the bonus squares.
the third city has no lake, unfortunately. that would be a later city to increase points later on, seeing as the first three cities are the most critical in a cultural victory.

I will play the next round now and update soon.

Round 2: 2560 BC to 1120 BC
All right, let's hope everything is working right...
The flying camera on the mac seems to be called satillite camera, so I hope it functions in the same way. I also got my hands on warlords... but I can't have it until July 23rd, the same day BtS comes out! oh, the irony of it all!:lol:

The round started with a quick tech change:

Many of you said that this was a good idea. at the end of the round, I'd have to agree with them. You'll see why.
Soon, the Venerable Bede published an interesting little book on culture
;

Well, I guess whoever discovered Buddhism is ahead, but not for long. Hehehehehehehehehe...:mischief:

The Wheel was discovered:

and we started on AH in order to find the little horsies.
But before that, we recieved some juicy intel:

Yep, Hatty's got marble, an important resoucres for our wonderbuilding needs. Currently, in my mind, she target #1, seeing as she in in close contact with us and holds a wonder-building material. there's another reason, but I can't tell you yet...

The barbs were very happy to settle in nice places for us:

Picture7.png

Unfortunatly, Peter razed the city later on, but it was an excellent city for later reference.

Then, diplomacy got a little more complicated...
Picture8.png

Someone founded Judaism. It doesn't say who on the religious screen, but a turn later, Hatty turned to OR and converted, so that makes her an even more lucrative target.

Stonehenge was constructed with a chop and a whip:

And at the end, we learned how to write:

Picture10.png

I ended 4 turns later.

Here's the southern half of the island, occupied by me and Hatty:
Picture11.png

and the northern half, occupied by Hatty and JC:

I'm working on alphabet in order to reach tech parity, but I could do something else. the oracle will be done in 12 turns, so Confuciancism is within reach. I was then thinking of moving towards Literature, then moving towards metal casting, for our other cheap building. Bombay is workingon a fast worker to begin developing the land; should I transition directly into the parthenon, or wait and build an axeman for defense? should we prepare an axerush, and if so, against Hatty or JC? JC has been very busy settling, and he's got both gems and gold in his cultural borders. Hatty has a holy city and is smaller, but she closer to me and may take land that I want. I also hav to begin expanding a bit; My civ is only two cities big. I will probably build a settler directly after the oracle, in order to settle more and take more land. Any ideas on where that city should go? And finally, which techs should I research?
I await your comments. Here's the save.

I'd settle our third city next to the jumbo's to grab dombo, my little ponys and the rice. This city can then build some chariots and axes for barb protection.
Our second city needs it worker to grow quickly. So build that, and an axe if our cap is still busy with the oracle. Otherwise it should build some axes. 3? one for each city and 1 to escort our next settler.
The second city should start asap on the partheon when it has some protection. And then build the NE there.
Axe rushing Happy sounds good, but does she have ponys?
For tech, we need pottery for growth. and hunting for spears and to hook up those furs en jumbo's. Then Iron working so we can start working those jungle.

Agree that the third city should go between the horses an the elephants, grab the rice. It will be food poor but those jumbos will make all the difference.

Oracle to CoL, with alphabet that you're teching will give you something to trade with. (radical could be self tech mathematics ,instead of alpha , hold off Oracle till then - 30 turns - and get construction with it. Then attack with catapults and elephants.)

Most important is to get that gold working and maximize production in all three cities. I wouldnt rush Hatty yet because she's up in the jungle. Better to build some defence and tech to construction, grab your fourth city, possibly in the north west to block Julius a bit.

Well, wouldn't advocate a war with hatty now ( let her do the jungle clearance for you :D ). I would focus on getting the phant/rice city ( for me 1W of phant ( with sailing you won't need roads to link this city with the capitol and the :health: bonus is nice) and on sustained growth. And we have a non obseleting UU so we are not in a hurry to rush Hatty ( first target IMHO( jusl let her do some nice and shiny wonders for you)
