INES III: Storm Tapestry

Major General Poi Sun watched his troops march in proud double file down the filthy dirt roads of Shan. They were a bunch of dropouts and valedictorians, as far as he was concerned. They all had their street smarts, and book smarts, but so did any army.. these men were just untrained, unfortunately.

They were an army of 10,000 volunteers. Rumored to be less than half as good as a normal soldier. He would make them strong, damnit; he would whip them into shape. Any army first had to master the march- an army that could not walk it's way to victory could not, in his opinion, be victorious.

A soldier that could march could build a tent; could cook his food, clean his bed, tend his wounds; a soldier that could march could fight.

A desk sergeant strolled up to him. "Sir, HQ has just sent word. The 88th, 17th and 8th Divisions will be arriving within the week."

"Excellent. One week, and the three finest divisions in the whole Siamese army will be arriving, to train these damned cadets. Why aren't you back at your cushy desk job, pushing papers for Uncle Sam- I mean, Uncle Li, son?" he asked, nodding to the almost prepubescent boy's stars.

Poi Sun was a tall man- thick hair and dark skin, and a strong British chin. The mutt of a Muslim and Jew, jack of all trades, master of ten. He leaned easily on his crutches.

"The brass is getting cocky, sir. They've moved all the forward bases onto the frontlines, convinced of the upcoming surrender of the Fourth assembly. I don't believe there's a surrender coming, but at least they left my girlfriend and daughter back in Saigon." the sergeant said, sipping his tea.

"That's very true, son. Get me a coffee- black, two sugars- and we'll discuss getting you on leave to see that girlfriend of yours before the advance into Shan."

The sergeant scurried off, probably happily contemplating his possible future leave. Poi Sun sighed, and stared at the endless file of men marching past him. He calmly smiled at each man he caught the eye of, hopefully boosting their spirits. The boys called him Poison- not very funny, considering he was a good man, and it was an english word. But they needed something to endear their leader to them- so he let it slide.

OOC: Forgot, I vote 2 updates/week, unless it becomes a hassle for the mod.

EDIT: Also, I forgot, orders sent.

Even though its probably kill me I vote for two updates.

The ally way was dark, save for the occassional dim red light from one of 'the Kelen's Eyes', video recorders. Even through the shadows, the Grand Union watches and disects your every move. The Seegin Nnamdi knew this, as did every other Seegin, and as such was most careful while walking through downtown Bamako. Questionable behavior ultimately led to to questioning by the People's Inqusitors. And only questionable people got questioned by the People's Inqusitors. Nnamdi was not questionable. He took great pride in that fact. He was a good citizen. So good, in fact, he recieved a badge for it, the day he turned his mother in for speaking ill of the Kelen. That was the proudest day of her life, or so she said before she was taken away.

dprk_pyongyang_hotel_rugen_05_s4.jpg

Despite this, questionable behavior often can subconsciously occur. That's why it is generally the best course of action to simply stare ahead. And this is what Nnamdi did, looking past the Kelen's Eyes, towards the growing white light at the end of the ally. It wasn't long until the blinding white sun of Bamako compeltely filled his senses, as he stepped out of the ally, into the main strip of Bamako. The flow of the cities traffic was steady, each car nearly identical to the next, save for the ocassional Union car, which was fittingly red, representing the party. Miles down the long road, the People's Hall of Governance, stood, in all it's Glory, where the Kelen surely watched over Bamako's Seegin. Across the otherside of the road, was the First Arch of Peace and Prosperity, a monument celebrating the endo f the old order, and the establishment of the new one. It beckoned him, as pat that sat the Coliseum. That is where he was headed. Nnamdi and his fellow Seegin over saw a massive surplus of weaponry, aircraft and even a few boats this cycle, and were justly rewarded with tickets to the cycle's stoning. He heard several Chinese soldiers would be the opening act, followed by a few dozen South Africans. Excitement was an incorrect word. Excitement is what one gets, when realizing a quota had been reached, or a job had been done past standards. Rather, this is the feeling one gets before the job, or duty has started. This was a sense of purpose. So, since he had doubled his output for this week, surely he is allowed to partake in yet another of the states jobs. And this feeling of purpose is why he loved the Kelen.

The room had all the look of being official. It was carpeted in scarlet red, greco-roman columns lined the walls, a great dome arched above, and along the walls were the flags of the member nations of the NEU and the Atlantic Kingdom. In the center of the room was a podium with a piece of paper, ready to be signed. On the opposing ends were the important parties and their processions.

Queen Victoria was prepared to sign the treaty herself. The Washingtonian Guard accompanied her in their white uniforms, still from the Revolutionary War. High nobles and Prime Minister Gates were with her as well. They were on one end of the room, under the flag of the Atlantic Kingdom. On the opposite end was Nico Romano, the only head-of-state of the NEU nations to attend (though important officials from the UK and France were attendant; it just so happened the Pact of Vienna was being signed on his property). And of course, not too far behind, were the Praetorian Guards under Fiorella Conti, in full dress with the Romanesque helmets, black uniforms, and Praetorian armbands.

And Nico Romano was one big grin. With this treaty, global power would shift strongly towards the NEU, and Rome would follow. This would be one of the most important treaties the NEU would sign, and he had a hand in its formation. Being an election year, this would only mean increased power for the NFP-PRR...and himself.

The Queen Victoria, very ornately dressed, and Nico Romano approached the podium at the same time, and shook hands. "E 'un piacere conoscerti, Console Nico Romano," the Queen said in Italian.

"And it is a pleasure to meet you, your Highness," Nico Romano replied in English with a bow. "I congratulate you in annexing Brazil and South Africa. Your people must be pleased to have such a fine and efficient Queen such as yourself."

"And your ability to transform the Roman Republic from a backwater to a world power hasn't gone without notice in the Atlantic Kingdom, either," the Queen replied with a smile. "Will you be attending my wedding?"

"Of course, your Highness. How could I miss it?"

The reporters opposite of the podium were feasting on the bits, snapping photos and shooting video for the holo-nets. Nico Romano could feel his polls soaring. "Shall we sign the Pact now, your Highness?"

"With pleasure," replied the Queen. She took a pen from an ink well immediately beside the Pact on the podium, and signed, Queen Victoria Washington. She then handed the pen to Nico Romano.

With this pen I create a legacy, Nico Romano thought with pleasure to himself. He dipped it in the inkwell, and signed to the right of the Queen's signature, Console Nico Romano.

The other dignitaries from France and the United Kingdom approached, and added their signatures. The party then took a photo together as reporters and others in the room (save for the guards) applauded. Undoubtedly, Nico Romano and the Queen were to stand out in the photo, if not for their far greater stature than cabinet members from the UK and France, but also for their costumes, with the Queen in regal dress and Nico Romano in the consular uniform. That didn't bother Nico Romano at all. He had an image to bolster.

He approached Fiorella Conti after the dignitaries broke up. "Was there any disruption outside?"

"My agents report that Catholics staged a protest outside, but they were swiftly dealt with, and no longer exist," Conti replied.

"What was their protest?"

"Human rights concerns in the Atlantic Kingdom. The Church never had a positive view of the Washington dynasty or the Atlantic Kingdom."

"I want all documents regarding human rights concerns in the Atlantic Kingdom purged, and the Vatican silenced. No newspapers are to publish stories even mentioning Andersonville or Canada. The Atlantic Kingdom is to become saintlike in the eyes of the Romans. Understood?"

"Yes, Consul. It will be done before the papers publish the story tomorrow."

"Excellent. I don't want anything hampering my image. This is an election year. I will not be satisfied with holding ground. The old PRR is to cease to exist this year."

"That could be arranged," Conti replied with a smirk.

"Through democratic means, Fiorella. I see that your MHET implants haven't affected your sense of humor."

She chuckled, squinting her eyes, one of which was a glowing red artificial eye. "If anything, browsing the Internet during boring ceremonies such as this has only enhanced it."

Over the V-Line, The Queen was smiling. Smiling was always good for Duke Breckenridge. It made his job a whole lot easier. As the Head of the OSI, it meant that She was content and unlikely to go off. That made life easier for everybody.

The Queen was coming back from Vienna, with a diplomatic coup in hand. The Atlantic Kingdom was taking over in the old South Africa and Brazil, and everything seemed to be good, but still…

“Greetings Your Majesty!”

“Duke Breckenridge, how goes things in Washington?”

He hesitated before he answered. This was a very secure line, but Gates had his own favorites in the OSI, and they all wanted to take Breckenridge’s job. But She asked him a question. “As one might expect Your Majesty. The union is causing quite a bit of paperwork. But between me and Minister Gates, the government doesn’t even notice you’re gone.”

The Queen smiled again at that. She had trained them all well. Keep the government smooth, and let her boost up the morale of the nation. With vague orders from Her, the government was able to function incredibly well.

And it was a good system. She was set to have a major meeting with Brazilian nobles, tour some cities, have Her own wedding, and to inspect border guards on the Texan border. The soldiers there were jumpy. But hey, that’s what you get for destroying an alliance. And there were dissenters within the government. The war hawks were itching, and the liberal nobles were protesting. They’d be dealt with soon. In the meantime, Breckenridge had real work to do, let Gates play politics, he was popular enough to ensure that the Atlantic Kingdom’s government stayed working with Victoria out of the country. Meanwhile, Breckenridge made sure the realities outside the palace stayed smooth.

As he walked through Washington Palace, he made note of the nobles. The issue was, the recent success had made the more influential nobles much more nationalistic. The perpetuated glorious destiny of the Atlantic Kingdom was actually taking hold in some of these nobles. The Brazilian and South African possessions were supposed to calm the mood, but it only heightened it. The Texas border inspections really were necessary, if anything to ensure the boys there didn’t start firing from excitement. Even the new nobles from Brazil and South Africa seemed to forget that Victoria had given them the ability to be a part of something grander. They wanted the Atlantic Kingdom to be even greater than it already was. A pain, since the Queen was trying so hard to be diplomatic, but still. Lord John Eltain, an excellent army commander, but a war hawk. Sir Victor Obst, a trusted servant of whoever was in power at the moment. The Prince consort, a man with no political ambition who wanted only wealth. And then, someone caught his eye. The Duchess of Cambridge. She recently assumed her father’s role when he passed due to an unfortunate drowning accident, but she already had done well. She had cultivated ties with the new Brazilian and South African nobles, the military was fond of her, and aside from Queen Victoria or Lord Gates, she had an incredibly recognized persona.

Duke Breckenridge feared her. Not her power, but what she could do. Victoria had cumulated with popularity after Brazil and South Africa. It seemed she was content with what the Kingdom had become. But in the Duchess, there was more to be had. She even had a claim, some would say stronger, to the Washington throne.

But that was later. The Queen was alive, and things should be fine. Now, back to that earlier problem….

Ahmad strolled down the streets of Shiraz, taking in the sights while simultaneously trying to avoid the crowd. After spending the last five years at war, he felt strangely empty inside now that he was in civilian clothes, even if it was just for a short leave. However much Ahmad disliked the cramped barracks and hard marching, it felt strange to be walking through a city without a gun in his hands. The chatting and laughter that surrounded him was in sharp contrast to the usual sounds of drilling, or even worse, the screams of wounded soldiers.

Turning the corner, Ahmad walked over to a newsstand, intent on purchasing a paper to take his mind off the horrors of war. Grabbing a copy of the state-run newspaper, the only one legal to sell within Iran, Ahmad sat down on a nearby bench and began to read. Immediately, the headlines of the paper, "Supreme Leader Appoints Political Successor", caught his eye, along with a picture of a charismatic looking young man featured below.

"As a result of an auto accident last week in which our glorious leader narrowly avoided major injury, Supreme Leader Khamenei has appointed a political successor, his 26 year old grandnephew Mohammed Khamenei. Before this point, the Supreme Leader has declined to appoint a political successor, leading to much speculation over who would fill his role in the future. However, it seems this close shave with death, from which he was spared thanks to the generosity of Allah, has made him change his mind. This announcement by the Supreme Leader makes Mohammed Khamenei appear as the most likely candidate to lead the nation when the office becomes vacant."

"However, the support of the Supreme Leader by no means guarantees Mohammed Khamenei the office. The Assembly of Experts, consisting of 86 Islamic scholars, holds the responsibility of appointing the Supreme Leader. While a majority of the Assembly are strong supporters of the current Supreme Leader, Mohammed has managed to anger some of his father's closest allies in the Assembly, while others are wary of his youth and non-clerical background. Furthermore, there is a large radical group within the Assembly of Experts, who publicly push for greater attempts by the Supreme Leader to unite Muslims worldwide. Citing the easy gains against the Order and India, these scholars are pushing for a more aggressive approach towards Israel and Rome and an end to cooperation with communists. This radical faction of the Assembly also looks for the government to attempt to gain the Mecca and Medina from the Egyptians, preferably through friendly means, and to put pressure on Muslims in Indonesia to join Iran. It is likely that should these more radical members gain a majority in the Assembly, they will attempt to elect a candidate who would comply with their goals."

"However, at this time the current Supreme Leader continues to reign prosperously and enjoys the widespread support of the people, and it could be many more years before these politics even come into play."

Update: 2056

Peaceful Events

The Treaty of Baltimore overturned order in the Americas.

(See Military Events)

The CWOH Commonwealth decided to be proactive and purge the government of spies, setting the ones they did find (a smattering of informants for various American countries, notably Texas and the Atlantic Kingdom) on course for very public trials. Various navy drills around Hawaii have reinforced the message that CWOH is well prepared to defend against enemies both local and communist.

Atlantic Kingdom estates in de-Canadianized Canada have become productive.

(+1 Atlantic ASP)

Aware that the Treaty of United Americas had become all but defunct, Queen Victoria of the Atlantic Kingdom signed into a new alliance: the Vienna Pact with the Neo-European Union.

Texas created a truly dense network of defenses along the Dakota border with the Atlantic Kingdom. It bristles with AA emplacements.

The Confederation of United Archipelagos emphasized local industry to try and reduce dependence on international trade.

The Union of Patagonia’s research into factory automation paid off massively, though all the technology has led directly to huge layoffs.

(+2 Patagonian ASP, +2 points invested in Patagonian ASP growth, -Patagonian approval rating)

The USACS government tried to rescue its rather abysmal international reputation via the Bamako Conference, which mostly involved shepherding skeptical diplomats through children’s rallies and Sahara railroad lines, all the while pointing out places where atrocities were not occurring. Condemned as a farce in many American and European countries, the Conference nevertheless assuaged the one nation that really needed to be assuaged. The Balt Confederacy has reaffirmed its commitment to LIARS.

Many minor terrorist attacks occurred across USACS, while large units of the Kélen Toumani’s UMAD troopers seem to be swirling around Cape Verde. In other random news, the USACS is now an even larger oil producer.

Consul Nico Romano kickstarted a dramatic year for the Neo-European Union with a speech announcing Roman advances in cloning, genetics, and human modification. Investigative journalism quickly uncovered program links with France and UK, and various minor exposés infuriated the religious, especially the Catholic Church, which was still smarting over the nationalization of its French assets. The Pope gave a number of speeches denouncing those who dared at “tampering with God’ s finest creation,” which led to protests and full on-riots from Dublin to Zagreb. But as the crisis escalated, it became clear that the Vatican was not the prime mover of the unrest…

Roman elections gave Nico Romano’s NFP-PRR a sweeping mandate, allowing the Consul a second term and almost wiping the old PRR out of the Senate.

The USACS withdrew from Sri Lanka and the Maldives, prompting new rounds of celebrations across India. Madras reasserted control over the islands and demobilized its conscript army.

The resolve of the Chinese Fourth Assembly of Military Talent finally cracked, as a good third of its members defected to sign the Treaty of Bangkok. Bangkok technically turned the Asia-Pacific War into a police action. The official government of the erstwhile Middle Kingdom was now the Proletarian Republic of China (PRC) rather than harried Republic of China (RC). Tibet, granted official independence, organized itself under the auspices of Indian Union observers, while Manchuria, North Korea, and parts of Shandong were ceded to Japan, a hugely populated South Chinese coastal strip was ceded to Siam, and parts of Xinjiang were ceded to Russia. Unfortunately, drawing all sorts of new lines on the map did not erase all resistance. The Japanese general named Proletarian Overlord of China found himself hard-pressed to stabilize his new state.

Siam and the Iranian Umma engaged in a diplomatic dance. The former was paid handsomely, but handed over Borneo to the latter rather than to Java, as the Supreme Leader Khamenei claimed he had wanted. Meanwhile, a number of islands east of Java that Mojtaba Khamenei had thought included in the sale were not released at all, perhaps because the chain included Hindu Bali and Catholic Timor.

Japan worked at integrating its new prefectures of Manchuria and North Korea, establishing local Citizens’ Guards and systematizing analog transfer protocols for sensitive information. With the Proletarian Empire in control of local railroads, airwaves, and internet, the prefectures were cut off from the outside world, but whatever other policies were implemented did good things for the national economy.

(+1 Japanese ASP)

With the end of the Great Patriotic War (as the Asia-Pacific War was called inside Japan), the idea of an Imperial Proletarian nationhood above petty ethnic and religious differences became a common propaganda theme, second only to the notion of glorious work. Damage to the Home Islands is being cleared up, and if all goes well, the metropole should be back to prewar production levels in 2057.

(+Japanese approval rating)

Iran handed Sulawesi back to the Imperial Proletarian Emperor, who ordered the island purged of the Islamist collaborators.

The Siamese government started drawing up plans to develop rural areas, even while it continued whipping the populace into patriotic fervor.

Military Events

The Treaty of Baltimore, among other things, did quite a number to Brazil.

(See Spotlight)

(Brazil and South Africa merged into Atlantic Kingdom with stats modified, -7 Atlantic divisions, -6 Atlantic groups, -1 Atlantic ASP)

The Confederacy of United World Archipelagos, utterly determined to crush the Marxists that had fled the Guianas, intervened mightily, with over a dozen divisions and matching airpower. Stonewalled by the locals, plagued by informants, and unacclimated to the local geography, the most fearsome communist plague to yet grace South America was wiped out, victim to just the sort of near-unilateral action that had long undermined the Treaty of the United Americas.

(-2 Archipelagic divisions, -2 Archipelagic groups)

The new Atlantic Dominion of South Africa, bolstered by American troops, wiped out the last remnants of Zulu resistance.

(-2 Atlantic divisions)

President Gahiji claimed he heard God trumpet, declaring war on the corrupt Ethiopian monarchy. He wasn’t the only one with that general idea; USACS cells took advantage of the distraction to launch revolutions in various cities and pledge direct allegiance to the Kélen Toumani. Unprepared for a pair of major threats, the Ethiopian military tried to deal with the communists first and lost Addis Abba, leaving the Negusa Nagast in Egyptian hands. A little thing like losing their emperor wasn’t enough to make the Ethiopians break—they simply crowned his eldest son. But by year’s end, most of the historical Axumite heartland was in Egyptian hands, where a vast relief package was slowly proving that the occupiers lived up to their propagandized status as providers of food, education, and equality. Meanwhile, most of the lands to the south owed loyalty to USACS, and the royalists were increasingly squeezed in the middle. Much of the land they still control is Somali and not particularly patriotic.

(-6 Egyptian Republic Janissary divisions, -6 Egyptian divisions, -7 Egyptian squadrons, -1 Egyptian group, -33 Ethiopian divisions, -15 Ethiopian squadrons, -16 Ethiopian groups, -Ethiopian approval rating, -3 Ethiopian ASP)

The various foreign agents in Europe (calling them communist had gone out of style) continued their barrage of terror attacks in the French Republic, even as it became clear they were also responsible for a great deal of the violence at the anti-cloning protests. The UK weathered its second storm, cracking down on its share of cloning dissenters in a matter of days, and the Roman Republic did almost likewise, mobilizing the Praetorian Guard against Balkan dissent and quenching rumors of revolt, but poor France, which had alternated between such highs and lows in recent years, finally tipped over the edge as leftist revolutionaries seized control of Iberia. Most of the Republic’s industry was concentrated in French-speaking lands, which was both impetus for uprising and damage control for the economy, but the bright side seems to be lost on President Briand, who is by now more hated than the recently deposed monarchy. Even further good news, the die-down of Parisian terror attacks, cannot quell talk of restoration.

(-10 French divisions, -5 French squadrons, -7 French groups, -French approval rating, -2 French ASP)

Per the Treaty of Bangkok, West Xinjiang was Russia’s reward for war against China, which somewhat upset the local Uyghur rebels whose desire for self-determination had been overlooked. When Moscow’s troopers moved to occupy the territory, they found a large Iranian army, which had violated Tibetan sovereignty in order to preemptively annex the more northerly Muslim land. The Shia had been invited; the Uyghurs having decided that the Supreme Leader was better than corrupt Russians. Perhaps not realizing the scope of the calamity, the Russian presidency ordered its soldiers to contest West Xinjiang, which the Supreme Leader of Iran quickly declared a violation of Iranian sovereignty. Under such pretext, the Iranians launched a general offensive, seizing Amu Darya bridges and pushing the front lines past vast territory in Central Asia. The Kazaks and other locals were neutral about the whole affair; the Russians had gone to great pains to bribe regional leadership, but not enough to get meaningful support against the victorious forces of the Umma. Shraz’s secondary attack met its objectives equally well—Iranians pushed through the Caucasus, crossed the Volga, seized Astrakhan, and linked up with allied armies on the other side of the Caspian.

(-7 Iranian divisions, -3 Iranian groups, -9 Russian divisions, -4 Russian irregular divisions, -7 Russian groups)

Siamese forces under Major General Poi Son defeated the Shan uprising in good order, and with only a minimum of massacres.

Much to their chagrin, the Japanese found that the Republic of China and the rump Fourth Assembly of Military Talent were not quite done fighting, Treaty of Bangkok or no Treaty of Bangkok. Bolstered by tacit cooperation with the eastern, Uyghurs who realized Siam and Japan had no love for them, the capitalist Chinese hung onto some positions on the Yellow River. In the south, they were less lucky. Siam, bolstered by the already legendary Poi’s Boys, crushed all mainland resistance below the Yangtze. At year’s end, the Fourth Assembly still exists, but areas across the ‘free’ parts of the country are slipping out of control. Indeed, smelling the solemnity of victory, the Siamese PM is contemplating stepping down and letting a more peaceful leader handle the transition to a new era in East Asia.

“The Brazilian peasants will soon see that the extension of Our domain is the dawn of a new age!”
-Queen Victoria of the Atlantic Kingdom

The Treaty of Baltimore was the sort of truth-stranger-than-fiction document that would have been better off disbelieved. By its articles, Her Majesty Victoria I of House Washington was engaged to Duke Phillip of Glasgow, a well-respected Afrikaner magnate fluent in Portuguese, who had served honorably in the first stages of the Brazilian Civil War as a consequence of inspecting his American landholdings at a very inopportune time. Rather more importantly, Baltimore also stated that Brazil and South Africa were to be annexed into the Atlantic Kingdom.

That clause caused a stir throughout the Western Hemisphere. South Africa, to world opinion, was a failed state which had made a good decision by proactively choosing the empire to gobble it up, but mighty Brazil had just (mostly) won its civil war. What did Rio have to gain through fealty to Washington? Royalist Brazilian diplomats had answers, but the truth made little difference. What did it matter if Brazil had felt isolated from the mighty Treaty of United Americas, and humiliated that it had been a proxy battleground in the war against communism, trod by the self-interested forces of a variety of nations? Didn’t the Brazilians know that they were upsetting the balance of power?

Indeed, days after the Atlantics declared their treaty, the Union of Patagonia and Texas decided to pull out of United Americas and found, with Mexico, the Pacific-Atlantic Defense and Trade Alliance (PADTA). In one smooth stroke, the Western hegemonic order long masterminded from Havana was cleft in two.

The first battles to shape the face of the new order were fought in Brazil. Unlike Cape Town, the Rio government was in less than complete agreement with the ascension into the Atlantic Kingdom, and many on the street were even more upset. Quite aside from the loss of sovereignty, Atlantic atrocities against the Canadians were reasonably well known. As unrest grew, Atlantic Prime Minister Gates made a concession and allowed Brazil a separate crown and parliament, but his platitudes were unable to prevent the formation of a myriad of Republican resistance organizations. The Brazilian Liberation Front, the Sons of the Amazon, the Knights of Sao Paulo, and the Anacondas were only the most famous. Atlantic soldiers sent overseas to secure Brazil found themselves confined with their partisans to the coast. The locals had learned a great deal during the recent communist revolt.

As the months dragged on, the mass of Republican organizations began to dwindle to a more manageable number, until it became clear that the Anacondas had subsumed most of the others. Preaching massacres of all rivals as the only way to ensure a return to the old order, they pushed to the ocean in some places, terrifying their less vicious competition, who sought parlay with the Atlantics. A meeting was held, and suddenly a great many of the moderates pledged allegiance to Queen Victoria, isolating the Anacondas, who shifted to a neo-Marxist stance, held a summit of their own, and…

Arrested the bulk of the die-hard Brazilian nationalists in the name of Queen and country. As the year closed, so did the shell game, as Atlantic intelligence officers of the OSI proudly abandoned their guises, presenting a largely pacified Brazil to Victoria. Waves of refugees have fled to the Union of Patagonia, some anti-monarchist, more desperate to escape the fighting and repression.
