Marine Costs as much as Tank!?

The thing y'all are forgetting here is that this is a game. Gameplay will always trump realism. Everytime.

It's more of a balancing issue than an accurate representation of the material costs of a Marine Unit vis a vis a Tank unit.

That's true Turner.
And I also think it would benefit Gameplay if the units on foot had some more advantages, or if the strongest units was more expensive.

I said I would only build them if I needed them.
I would only need that island for a conquest victory or if it had some resource.
I don't think the cruise missiles or bombers would destroy the town, just the units and infrastructure. You would need a marine or beserker to take the town.
It may be rare but it's the tool for the job.
Exactly. Just one marine. It's a rare situation, and therefore not worth investing in the req. tech until the town on the 1 tile island is the last thing standing between you and conquest victory.

IMO they should've simply lowered the cost for the marine (and the para also) to make these units cost-effective enough for everyday use.

Exactly, I never research the tech unless I need it, or get it as a throw in on some deal.

That said, when I do build them I do have fun with them. Why build just one?
Attacking cities with marine armies is a blast. Hey some times I even build battleships and aircraft carriers and make a real D-Day our of it.
Not often, and only on a game that is way past winning.

And if you research or buy the tech Amphibious War, then it seems like a bit off a waste if you just build one marine. Unless you got all the techs off an AI through a peace deal, and Amphibious War was one of them.

It should be possible, sometimes, to conquer a town on a 1-tile island without berserks/marines.

You could, with a bit of luck, make that island bigger.

How? Nukes. Nukes can sometimes change the coastline and add more land tiles. I did this on an island, but it was not a 1-tile island to begin with. But I can't see why the original size would matter, so I believe it could work on a 1-tile island too.

Is this true? Because I've never had this happen, nor heard anyone say that this happened to them.

Yes, it can definitely happen. But there are thousands of tiles on which this can happen, so I don't really think you should hope for this. :)

Sure it is true when I found it out myself. Now I don't recall if I nuked the beach tile, or if I nuked a land tile next to the beach tile.

If I nuked a land tile next to the water, it would perhaps not work on a 1-tile island if there is a city on it. I have not tested on a settled 1-tile island.

Edit:

ops, crosspost with the master crossposter. :p

It all all comes down to map-reading. If you are fighting a civ with a single tile island city, oftentimes you can get that city in a peace treaty, just don't kill them down to that city. If you worry about reputation, wait 20 turns and kill them then. AW is a long ways up the tree and not worth wasting the research...unless you like the Marine unit.

Really? I didn't know more land couple appear in the ocean from a nuke. I hardly ever get far enough in time to get nukes before I win the game, though.

Are you talking about making land with nukes?

I'm on C3 1.29f (see signature icon).

Yes. Are you saying that it does happen in vanilla? I suppose I never nukes enough tiles for it to occur. :nuke:

I think what happens, is the sea tiles turn into desert. Although I've never actually had this happen either.

We need a modern Marine :D

I agree.

I agree.
