LizNES5: Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying, And Love The Bomb

Peaceful Matters in 1962

This year, the German Conservative Party seems to be on an up swing, gaining the most seats in the German parliament they've managed to get a hold of, since the 1890's. It seems Kauffman's style of governing will persist, at least in this immediate time.

The Second Turkish Empire began constructing Mosques and Minarets in Romania, Serbia, and Greece this year, causing quite a stir in some locations. Some began citing an 'Islamic Takeover', while Moslems, previously silent minorities in the nations, began practicing a bit more publically, even if only slightly so. While the amount of converts remain small, this movement has made the politicians in the said countries take the Moslem populace into greater account in national matters.

Oil-pumping equiptment has been updated in the Second Turkish Empire. Most of it wasn't too far in terms of technology anyway, though some production boosts have been felt. (++2 Turkish IP)

The standard of living in the Far-Eastern Soviet seems to of risen this year, albeit with a few more Russian faces around. Whatever the reason may be, things are looking good. (++3 Far Eastern Soviet IP, +Far Eastern Soviet Happiness)

Riding on the successful defeat of the Central American Republic last year, President Andres Perez of Gran Colombia has been attempting to upgrade his nation's airforce with the new Sitka-Quito Cooperative Designed 'Little Angel' Fighters. The fighter is able to not only clearly maintain air-superiority, at least in competition with already designed standard fighter aircraft, but can be (at least somewhat) effective against targets on the ground. Among it's other notable features is the ability to be fairly 'invisible' to radar, at least depending on the altitude, and of course, its as on now, record breaking speed. President Perez quickly sold his previous 'archaic' fighters, to pay for these new, fancy ones.

In an attempt to make the annexation of the Central American Republic's territories a bit easier for both Colombians and Central Americans. President Perez has decided to make Moises Moreno from the Movimiento para la Lusticia Popular a cabinet minister, giving him the newly created title of 'Minister of Integration'. The ultimate goal of this post is "to assist in the re-integration of the Central American states after their long sojourn as independent rebels.". Moreno being given essentially a blank check has been able to ease the some of the previous issues within the annexation. Tensions still remain, however, and not all Central Americans have welcomed this new program with open arms. (see Military Matters) (-Colombian Happiness)

The Iberian populace has begun being encouraged on Small and Medium Enterprises in an attempted to boost the economy. The incentives were rather small however, and not too much of a boost was really felt. (+15 Iberian IP)

The Iberian government has also begun spending some of it's money on a series of military bases, with the goal of training their soldiers a tad better. This motion, along with the military excercises conducted last year, have made Iberian soldiers perhaps the most fit peace-time military on the planet. What good that'll do come actual combat is for now, unknown.

The war in China was over. The Treaty of Nanjing, signed by the Republican Chinese government, the Empire of Japan, India and Indochina officially ended all the fighting between the nations, as the once-combatatants turned to fight the now very real Communist threat spreading across the Chinese heartland (see Military Matters). India annexed much of South Western China, Indochina managed to take South China, with Japan pulling out a lot of Eastern China from the treaty. The remaining lands continued to be nominally Chinese, though, considering the extent of these revolutions, the Chinese government's ability to actually govern these lands is virtually non-existant.

From the Treaty, the free nations of Mongolia and Uyghurstan were created, with Mongolia being made a member (along with China) of the Coalition of Asian States, while Uyghurstan declined an offer to join the alliance, refusing to so readily associate itself with the Coalition. Mongolia, being offered no such chance, has become a half-hearted member at best, offering little aid in terms of actually helping the CAS fight the Communists in China, with many Mongolians actually supporting the rebels. Anti-CAS protests occured in Ulan Bator, and gained some support from the countryside, before some Japanese armoured brigades showed up to forcibly put the protests down.

The victory was celebrated this year in Japan, when the Emperor declared April 10th, Kyuui Day, or Peace/Tranquility Day. This date coincides with the exact signing of the Treaty of Nanjing. Parades and other festivities were held in Tokyo, as victorious army units marched through screaming crowds of supporters, cheering their victorious sons off 'to another victory'. The mysterious Boei Agents even made an appearance, albeit as the not-so-secretive secrete-service of some higher ranking Japanese officials. (+Japanese Happiness)

All the while, much of China remained in ruins, be it from bomber raids, or actual fighting between the various combatants over the last few years. Crop failures hit the civillian population hard, while the continued fighting in much of Central China (among other places) managed to fore-stall a lot of reconstruction efforts attempted by the Republican government. The territories occupied by the victorious powers experienced fewer revolutions, with many chosing instead to take the fight to what is now China. Japan began reconstructing some of the main industrial zones of the regions they've occupied, while India began bringing Sichuan into India officially by ensuring that any and all destroyed industry is up and running. Many Chinese workers not directly involved with the Communist revolts refused to partake directly in the building progress, for fear of 'helping the invaders'. Seizing an oppurtunity, much of the Indian lower classes began making their way to the region to take the newly opened Industrial jobs. Plans are in the works of creating a local governing system for next year. (++5 Indian IP, +1 Indian EP, ++5 Japanese IP)

The Soviet Republic of Russia declared it's recognition of the People's Army of China as the righftul rulers of China, instead of the 'puppet' CAS government established this year. In order to rightfully protect and support them in the conflict, the Red Army moved into China this year, in a purely defensive purpose, in order to protect Communist held lands. The Red Army did not participate in any attacks the PAC commited itself to this turn, instead maintained itself as a mere peace-keeping force. This put an obvious strain on CAS-Russian relations, as by CAS accounts, China is in fact a member of the alliance. No shots between the two sides have been fired, with the politicians on both sides planning on meeting together in the future to discuss the move.

In a rousing speech, the President of the United States of the Mid-Atlantic, Laurance Whitfield, publically insulted Christoofer De Vries, Prime Minister of the Dutch Empire, putting the two nations at odds. The Dutch Empire, and the USMA's southern neighbor, the Confederacy of North America signed the Amsterdam Accords, creating an alliance between the two nations, all the while highlighting a similar foreign diplomatic outlook. Should things continue to go south with relations betweent the Dutch Empire, and the USMA, this alliance will surely come in handy.

Confederate Vice-President Jonathan J. O'Neill announced his candidacy for the Dixie-Party Presidential nomination, in the election for the year 1962. With similar views as current Confederate president, James Monroe Forrest (who is at an all-time high in public ratings), it was thought that he would sweep the election. The Democrat's nomination of Andrew Jordan, a man who promised to end major involvement in the Caribbean crisis, and to 'bring a smile to every man and woman in Dixie.' gaining him more support then many Dixie politicians had originally thought he'd receive. The last polls show him behind in numbers by only 3%, an incredinly tight margin. Several specialists are even suggesting that he may run away with the victory, especially considering recent events to the north, and south. (see Military Matters)

The Confederate States government issued The Pardoning Act of 1962 this year, promising amnesty for any person 'who has committed a crime or misdemeanor against the Confederate government in acts of resistance before the date of January 1, 1962', clearly targeting the Texan Resistance group, the Texan Ranchers. Several hundred ex-Texans showed up to local Confederate military outposts, or police stations to receive the pardon. In order to help this 'healing' process along, President Forrest visited several of the western territories on a good-will tour, all the while making promises that Texan government officials can maintain their positions, so long as the people of the territory wishes for it. All in all, these beyond kind moves, coupled with some highly flattering speeches made by Forrest have really aided the assimilation of the ex-Texans into the Confederacy. Few acts of 'terrorism' on behalf of the Texan Ranchers occured this year, with all of those caught in affiliation with the group who did not recieve their pardon receiving criminal sentencing. (+Confederate Happiness, ++3 Confederate IP)

The new, western expanses of the Confederacy have also begun applying for state-hood this year, due in large part to the general benevolence President Forrest has expressed towards the people living in the area, much of which was Texas at one point or another. Several state politicans have expressed concern in regards to the new states, and their possible effects on the electoral college, however these concerns are greatly outweighed by the happy populaces of the new states. (+Confederate Happiness)

The Industrial Technological Advancement Act promised tax reductions for any company willing to upgrade their industry's equiptment and technology, to meet with the standard of technology the Confederate government can put forward. This reduction has allowed for several businesses to replace some previously out-of-date machines and ideas, with new modern ones. With this promise, the Confederate central government has managed to stay out of the economics of it all, with all of this being nothing more than an incentive, with several state's taking the matters into their own hands, such as Louisiana. (++2 Confederate IP)

Ukrainian Minister Groucho Marx invited several Black Sea nations to attend the 2nd Black Sea trade summit this year, with representatives from Georgia and Romania showing up. It seems that the Ukrainian government itself forgot about the summit, and not much was accomplished in it, past for several instances in which the Ukrainian, Romanian and Georgian ambassadors got quite drunk, and made deals that no one can really remember.

The first ship has sailed through the Panama Canal since the start of Colombian-Central American hositilies two years ago.

The Nigerian Nationalist Party rose to power in a coup this year, with Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu (known as Kaduna to supporters) a young officer in the Nigerian military at the head of the new government. Citing previous the previous Nigerian governments failure to destroy Communism is Nigeria, along with it's cooperation with the 'White Imperialists', and it's general benevolence towards White People, Kaduna and a small group of other military officers managed to stage a bloodless coup, deposing the previous Nigerian president. The response of the public was either wildly pro-Kaduna, or non-existant, with many Nigerians failing to notice too much of a difference, at least at first. It wasn't until the Nigerian military arrested and imprisoned all white people in the nation, along with people allegedly with Communist sympathies that things seemed to be very, very different. A propaganda campaign on behalf of Kaduna's supporters swayed large portions of the Nigerian populace's opinion in favor the move, with 'things' happening to those that decided to protest the militaries actions.

With all the whites gone, along with some other members of the population missing, a lot of questions have arisen, such as where they've gone, and of course, who is going to fill in the jobs they left behind. The youth has begun to look at Kaduna as an example of what Nigeria could be, and have been among his most fervent of supporters. Even with this, however, his complete control of his nation has still yet to be completely solidified, with the possibility of a counter-coup a very real possiblity. Texas has attempted to expand its economy. Feeding money into building some new dams and railways, a return has been seen. (+1 Texan EP, ++1 Texan IP)

Still revelling in his 'Person of the Year' Award, De Vries wasted no time getting right back on the horse, subsequently firing it for not 'fitting right', and riding off to go fix up the Dutch economy. He shifted his gaze towards the somewhat untapped potential of the Congo, sending out 'hunter gatherer' groups, to scout out any and all resources that could be exploited, and bring income into the Dutch Empire. The PCAA utilized a lot of its man-power, and money to re-map the entirety of the Congo, making sure no stone was left unturned. This of course, brought several members of one of these groups into conflict with some otherwise disconnected tribes, and communities of Africans, which the PCAA attempted to resolve as peacefully as possible- and when it was not possible, it wasn't anything their military couldn't handle. (see Military Matters)

The Infrastructural project initiated by the Dutch government last year was continued in full this year. A new railroad and highway system in parts of it's colonies allowed for a greater harvesting of resources, bringing in some signigant gains for the Dutch government. With an easier ability to connect with the otherwise fringe members of the Empire, the Dutch government has managed to successfully 'Dutchify' many otherwise disconnected and indifferent people living in the Congo and Indonesia. (+1 Dutch EP)

The Dutch government has also established a governmental office to provide various sorts of loans to energy companiese and energy research foundations in order to encourage growth. The ultimate goal is to prepare the Dutch Empire for a transition to Nuclear Power at some time in the future. The first nation to generally acknowledge that Nuclear Power may very well be the way of the future, various 'safe-guards' have been created to ensure that Dutch industry does not falter, should the transition be made. Seeing as the Dutch Empire has no knowledge of Atomics aside from the basic facts, however, have made this seem a bit premature, however, only time will tell.

Negotiations between Canada, the USMA, the Maritme Provinces and New England broke-down this year, after some attempted mediations by the Japanese Empire, and Gran Colombia. Writing a fair treaty (as compared to initial USMA suggestions) New English diplomats refused some of the minor points of the treaty, namely giving the USMA any fighter squadrons. And so, the fighting began again in ernest this year. (see Military Matters)

Canada, fully aware of the fact that many civillians in New England are innocent of it's government's follys, opened up the border to the massive amounts of refugees attempting to escape the fighting. Various towns were set up for refugees, with the Canadian government even going so far as to employ them in setting up and running said towns. The result was a fairly content new population actually producing industry, rather then taking it. The refugees were hard at work building new roads, and starting new businesses, directly helping expand Canada's industry. (+50 Canadian IP, ++3 Canadian IP)

An Alliance of Islamic Nation's project finally took root this year, after being proposed, and worked on for two years. An alliance wide Rail-road network connecting lands between Instanbul, Baghdad, Mecca, Medina, Cairo, Alexandria, even extending into Riyadh and Peshwar has begun construction. The rail-road itself has extended itself into Egypt, and some parts of Arabia, with construction to begin in Pakistan next year, should the funds present themself.

The 'Ecuadorian Proposal for the Cessation of Hostilities in the Andes' was accepted by all warring parties this year, with the border between Peru and Ecuador shifting a bit. Another side effect of the peace was the creation of South American Defense and Economic Treaty Organization, or SADETO for short. Tensions on the border remain high, despite the peace being established.

After two long years of warfare, Ecuador began exploring it's eastern jungle territories. Oil has been found, at least in signifigant enough amounts for some type of economiuc advantage to be gained from harvesting it. Drilling has begun this year, and should funding continue, could be finished by next year. (++1 Ecuadorian IP)

The Sitka-Oregon railway expanded this year, through the entirety of Oregon, into California, reaching San Diego, after several various agreements and treaties were established between the three nations. This new Sitka-San Diego Railway has brought some signifigant trade increase to all 3 nations. (++4 Oregonese IP, +1 Oregonese EP, ++5 Californian IP, +1 Californian EP, ++1 Alaskan IP)

Following the sample of Britain's integrated banking system, California began working towards establishing a Stock Exchange for the whole of the Sitka-Quito Cooperative. As tariffs and other types of regulations have begun being lowered among the members of the Cooperative, a massive amount of capital has been flowing through Los Angelos. With the reduced tariff's, and increased trade, Californian companies, prepared for such a type of integrated economic system, coupled with the advantages brought to it by the Sitka-San Diego Railway, have begun to stretch their reach into various aspects of other member state's economies, buying several Mexican, Oregonian, Alaskan and Ecuadorian companies out. (+1 Californian EP)

Elections were held in Britain this year, with the new Prime Minisyer Alec Claymore being elected, replacing the increasingly disliked Herbet Morrison (who promptly wrote a book, defending himself, and his honor). Claymore was a member of the 'British Global Party', and ran on a nationalist, democratic, and imperialist platform that appealed to large sections of the British (homeland) populace. While his charisma has inspired large portions of the population, he was immediatley faced with a crisis abroad (see Military Matters).

Romanian soldiers ventured across the border into Ukraine, during a phony training mission. To make matters worse, the soldiers, thinking they were still in Romania, refused to be taken into custody by Ukrainian officials, causing for an armed stand-off that had to be fixed by direct communication between the two governments.

A treaty between Ukraine and Soviet Russia was signed this year, allowing for Russia to export oil and other natural gases into Ukraine. The treaty is the first treaty between a Soviet nation, and a classically capitalist nation, something that has taken much of the rest of Europe by surprise. (++2 Ukranian IP, ++3 Ukranian IP)

The Sitka-Quito Cooperative added a new member this year, with the Brazillian government being notified of an agreement being reached inside the cooperative about a possible membership oppurtunity for the South American power. With Brazil now in the alliance, much of North and South America seems to be under the sway of the Sitka-Quito Cooperative, leaving some of the other American nations feeling increasingly alienated.

The Ukrainian Foreign Legion was created this year, in the hopes of attracting foreigners to fight for the Glory that is Ukraine, should the need arise. Few actually ventured into the land, citing it's general strangeness. The promise of free Vodka, and 'attractive womenfolk' have attracted a few adventurers to the organization though, including a sizable amount of Poles. The Ukrainian people have looked upon their new foreign defenders with a sense of awe, and distaste. 'They do not smell of the pig snout, yet', claimed one on-looker. (+Ukranian Happiness)

A Parks and Recreation Project was opened up in Ukraine, with the goal of creating more public areas for the goal of relaxation and general fun, in the hopes that the Ukrainian people will forget their woes. So far, it's been quite effective, and the people seem to approve of it thus far. To quote the production manager Viktor Huliganoff's views of the parks, 'Parks are the places where people of all walks of life can come enjoy their homeland together, as one glorious body at one with nature'. He is, however, considered a 'dirty hippy' by many Ukrainians, so his thoughts shouldn't be taken with too much salt. (+Ukranian Happines, +45 Ukranian IP)

To honor the visits of representatives from Iberia, Germany, Britain and the Netherlands, packages of Vodka, Cured Smoked Sausage and Lucky Bear Claw have been sent to the leaders of the said countries. No response has been given yet, however.

Cultural Matters in 1962

De Vries has continued pushing forth a slew of Anti-Communist propaganda. At this point, however, he's not only pushing it, but shoving it down people's throats. More public service announcements have begun airing over Dutch Radio stations, with some even playing some of De Vries finer speeches in syndication (albeit, the cursing and threats have been altered slightly). The pro-military campaign has also continued in ernest, especially after citing the revolts in China. (+Dutch Happiness)

A 'Folk Music' Movement has sprung up in several Western cities, namely London, Philadelphia, Amsterdam and Charleston. This musical form consists of political lyrics, with a (generally) slow acoustic guitar-led rhythm. Many of these Folk Artists look scraggly, and as Christoofer De Vries described 'homeless'. The movement however has gained some momentum, at least in the youth of the nations, and is generally considered harmless.

Military Matters in 1962

Violent revolution has broken out in the British Gold Coast, German Togoland and parts of French North Africa. The revolutionaries have torn down symbols of European Imperialism, and declared self-rule. The German military attempted to hunt down and kill the 'traitors', though found it hard to find exactly where the guerilla's were hiding, with most public support being thrown behind the rebels. A similar situation developed in the British Gold Coast, with the High Command of the British military struggling to send troops to the trouble points. (-1 German Armoured Division, -1 British Division, -20 British IP, --1 British IP, -10 German IP, --1 German IP, -15 French IP, --1 French IP)

Some African Tribals in the middle of the Congo decided to start attacking a Dutch PCAA 'Cartographer' Group. Not wanting to get smacked around by some 'half-naked men with spears' (or so Prime Minister De Vries was heard uttering), the Dutch acted accordingly, killing several of these 'rebels'. Needless to say, native retaliation was attempted, but after several not-so-hard-fought battles, the PCAA clearly reigned supreme in the Congo. At least for now. (-5 Dutch IP)

The fighting in the Caribbean escalated this year, with Carib Liberation Front managing to secure the entirey of Puerto Rico, the Leeward Islands and the Windward Islands with only limited fighting. Santo Domingo too fell, as Carib units surrendered en masse to the oncoming tide of their fellow countrymen and women. Confederate fighters, bombers and naval support hampered the efforts of the Carib Liberation Front to the best of their abilities, however foreign aid seemed to be pouring in, even allowing for the Caribs to shoot down some Confederate planes, the first losses they've experienced yet.

Soon, with the support of sympathetic military units and other local militias, the Communist forces marched from the south of Cuba to the north, with Federal unit, after unit hessitating, if not outright refusing to fire upon the protesters. Those that did were quickly over run by the advancing Communist forces. Havana soon fell to the forces, though they were met with empty streets, and nods of silent approval by the citizens that remained in the city. A large part of the Republican forces and the civillians that continued to support the Republic retreated to the southern coast, where Confederate fighters aided their retreat. Currently, they've taken up defensive fortifications on the coast, with the hopes of gaining some sort of transportation either out of the region, or some ground support. However, with the various people's of the Carribean islands, who for so long viewed themselves as seperate entities under a common government, the chance for true unification, and the hope for a better future makes any hope of counter-revolution doubtful at this time.

(-1 Confederate Fighter Squadron, +The People's Republic of the Carribean, -1 Carib Division, -1 Carib Armoured Division, +2 Carib Militia Divisions, +5 PAC Militia Divisions)

Things in the Caribbean have gotten even more messy. As the Maritmes War resumed in full in the North, both the United States of the Mid-Atlantic and Colombia had designs on the New English territories that speckled the Caribbean Sea. Gran Colombia, previously neutral, and one of the two independent negotiators during the failed peace-talks, issued a declaration of war, and the statement that all New English units serving in Haiti must surrender arms to the Colombian forces, or face destruction. No reply was recieved, and so the Colombians quickly dispatched forces to take over the territory. When they arrived, they found that a simultaneous attack by forces from the Mid-Atlantic States was occuring. The result was an awkward situation to say the least. As USMA and Colombian split the island up, with each group wondering about their 'allys' next move, generals on both sides decided it would simply be better to let the politicians sort the mess out. In the meantime, Colombia snagged some New English islands in the Lower Antilles, while the USMA did the very same to New English posessions in the Greater Antilles. (-10 New English IP)

Meanwhile, Confederate Naval vessels fell prey to attacks from an unknown source. Several merchant ships, and even some military ships were destroyed, before the Confederate airforce, working in conjuncture with the navy, managed to sink one of the under-water assailants. USMA naval forces in the region quickly converged on the site of the reckage, claiming that it was a rogue New English submarine, and that it fell under USMA jurisdiction. The Confederacy then declared that it was a CLF, or similar communist affiliated submarine, and as such would fall under the control of the Confederate Navy. This stand off, and the refusal of both sides to readily let go of the site of the wreckage has led to wildly increased tensions between the two nations. (-5 Confederate IP, -1 Confederate Destroyer)

With New England's refusal to agree to the mediated peace between itself and the Coalition forces led by the United States of the Mid-Atlantic, the armies began immediatley fighting once more. New York City, after a long seige, surrendered amiably to the Mid-Atlantic forces, not wishing to experience a mass of civilian casualties. Militia bands, originally arising to aid in the defense of their mother New England ended up returning home, rather then fight in a pointless war. New English generals scrambled to figure out what to do, as the military situation began seeming more and more impossible, all the while the New English government sat blissfully ignorant of the events around them. A war council meeting left the New English military command fragmented over how to handle the situation. Several generals wished to continue the fight 'to lack of life, or lack of country', while others attempted to organized some sort of peace treaty with the attacking armies.

Ultimately, the speed of the USMA armies, complete lack of air support, along with complete defeatism on the home front left these 'Generals For Peace' as the majority, with 3 of the highest commanding generals abolishing the New English government, establishing military rule over sections of the land. As USMA forces began to seige Boston, a white flag of surrender was finally waved from one of the generals. The New English navy, thus far out of the picture, surrendered to Maritme Forces east of Labrador. With the general army laying down their arms, the war, it seems, is over.

Fighting throughout China remained a constant, with hit and run rebel groups striking at Chinese Republican forces, all the while staying away from the military's of other CAS nations.
(-1 Chinese Division)

Rebels, resisting Colombian occupation of the whole of Central America also began striking at Colombian military outposts. Their general disorganization, among with infighting with one another has caused for the losses to remain relatively few, however, this has not aided public support of the occupation too well. 'Willing To Live, And Die, In Dixie'
CONFEDERATE JAMES MONROE FORREST
-written by Leonard Nemoido

Sometimes countries are run by spastic, over the top men, like the Netherlands. Other times, we may believe a nations leader is a little 'drunk behind the wheel', (Looking at you New England/Texas) but it's very rare that a nation is led by a gallant, calm, charming and most of all, sensible individual. Which is why we are so pleased to announce that Confederate President James Monroe Forrest has been given the prestigious title of 'Person of the Year'.

Getting the award after someone like De Vries generally diminishes the type of person being honored. It's sort of like playing after the opening act in a concert. But rest assured, Mr. Forrest is second act to no man. Born in 'Small Town' Dixie, President Forrest can trace his lineage back to the earliest days of the most serence Confederacy. Entering politics at a fairly young age, he immediatley identified with the jingoistic, moral and economically ' laissez-faire' Dixie Party, and soon found himself a star, surrounded by other, less.. well, interesting politicians.

After a successful career as both a representative and a senator in the Confederate congress, Forrest soon found himself with the Dixie Parties presidential nomination in 1956. And by the end of the year, he swaggered on into Charleston, and quickly took charge of the fairly powerful nation. He made sure the economy stayed fair and viable. He, almost magically, ended the Texan-Californian War, with the incredibly pro-Confederate Colombus Accords, guaranteeing Texan protectorate status, all the while increasing the size of his beloved Confederacy by a third. Meanwhile, he joined hands with his counter-part over the seas, De Vries, and began crushing Communist bugs whenever they seemed fit.

A calm man, Forrest is the type of guy to mull over international and domestic issues while sitting on the back deck of his ranch, sipping a beer, and chewing on straw. And in this crazy, hell-fire world, a lot of Confederates are more then content to know that their 'driver isn't drunk at the wheel'. In fact, he's feeling just right. A few beers or not, he is a damn good driver. And so long as the Confederate economy booms, territory is gained, and Dixie-Dominance is being expended overseas, things are looking pretty good.

Runner Ups
2. Ukranian Minister of Economics, Groucho Marx Ignore his first name. He's a nice guy. Ignore his last name. He loves his money. Hell, ignore the mustache too. Wether he be drunk, or taking one of his 'cat naps', this mentally disturbed Ukranian has managed to make the economy not just run, but flourish.

3. Nigerian 'President', Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu Racism sucks. Ask any white person living in Nigeria. Not only does he manage to sweep into power in one year, he has also seemingly managed to take 400 years of European exploitation of the African and reverse it, for perhaps the first time in history. He is the baddest thing in the Valley of Darkness.

4. Turkish General Salmon Abdallah Sometime the best rise to the top. And sometimes the silliest. This old man may cause more then a few laughs, and other assorted shenanigans in the Turkish military's High Command, but by Allah, don't question his skills as a general. He is the best they got. (or so we've been told.)

THE "PLACE AND TIME MAGAZINE" EVENT OF THE YEAR

The Fall of Havana
THE COMMUNIST TAKE OVER OF HAVANA
-written by Katja Purrey

We talked about this last issue. Extensively. And here we are to talk about it again. No, we don't have some sick fetish with Communism spreading to the otherwise beautiful Caribbean islands. (though it does make for good writing!) Rather, the situation keeps getting more and more interesting there. Especially when a small communist movement, that started on a few otherwise alienated islands, managed to grip one of the worlds largest island regions within 3 years.

This isn't to say people wanted it to not happen. Hell, the Person of the Year sent the full power of the Confederate Navy and Airforce to stop it. The Caribbean Republican forces threw everything they had to fight the revolution, and kill it before it spread. But this seemingly just threw oil into the fire. Support from sources around the world ensured that the rebels did indeed have food, weapons, and other assorted supplies. Unknown nations actively participated in naval warfare against, at first, the Caribbean Republic, and as of this year, the Confederate States. But the erratic behaviour of several nations in that regard makes it difficult to pin the blame soley on Comintern, the most likely party to get involved. A lot of things about the situation simply doesn't add up.

But all the while, the moment the first Communist boot entered into Havana, it became obvious that the 'victors' just secured their capital. The Caribbean Republic was an ungodly creation. Several cultures, spanning across hundreds of islands thrown together in a political unity out of nescessity, united abruptly obviously wasn't going to last long. The previous dictatorship insured public discontent. It was only a matter of time that a movement such as this took shape. And so, as these Caribbeaners wake up, they no longer see Cubans, Puerto Ricans or Dominicans. Instead, they see Comrades.

2. The Civil War In China Recent enemies banding together to fight the threat of Communists, while Russia decides to move the Red Army in. The entire situation seems to be a powder keg waiting to blow up.

3. The Creation of SADETO The South American Defense and Economic Treaty Organization very well could prove to be an effect foil against the Sitka-Quito Cooperative's growing size. Of course, this is all considering that more nations would want to join it.

4. The Rebellions in Africa Keeping with this years theme of unhappy populace's revolting against their previous ruler, it seems that Africans just had enough. With the rise to power of Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu, and the benefit of some weakened European Empires, it's hard to really pin the blame on these rebellions on any one thing in particular.

@Everyone: A lot of you ask me a lot of questions in regards to a lot of things. Please never assume I remember exactly what you're talking about in your orders. Things such as 'I'm going to invest 3 EP in that Super Secretive Pirate Fiesta Project I told you about' generally make my life more difficult as a struggle to remember exactly what the Project is, along with it's finer points. Mention some things I might of said (as in it's effects, it's cost, etc.) and essentially refresh my memory. It gets quite annoying, especially when it happens multiple times each update in different sets of orders. Even if it's in previous PMs, or Social Groups. Their is a large chance I deleted them, and an even larger one I don't feel like searching through various posts and PMs to find out what exactly you meant.

@Everyone: Please post your spending clearly in your orders. Mention it whenever you want elsewhere in your orders, but put it right under your stats. It makes it a helluva lot easier to update the stats that way.

@Everyone: Your 'newb' phase is now over. Their is now a chance your projects will fail, if not thought out well, if you over spend, under-spend, whatever it may be. I've been highly lenient the last few updates. But there are those of you attempting to squeeze EP out of every little thing.

@Commander Gorma: Psh, at least tell me what you plan on doing.

@Milarqui: Your military has trained well, but it's hard for them to be much better then what they're at right now. After all, real combat is hard to completely re-create.

@Luckymoose: Interesting orders, though keep in mind, it's hard to completely convert your whole populace to one way of thinking in a year. The suddeness of this all is what has created the discontentness.

@badunoff: Azerbaijin is not a part of the Alliance of Islamic Nations. I'm sorry if I said it was at some point, or if I perhaps suggested that it was in some way. That's my bad. Otherwise, meh. It's a Soviet State, technically Athiest, and already in Comintern. I don't think this is really going to effect any of your plans, but perhaps you should stop taking it into account. Also, no signifigant amount of money has been made in regards to the creation of the AIN. However, some industry has spread, so you should see a slight industrial boost.

@Dreadnought: Your stories have been really interesting to say the least. I love the very realistic take you have on your nation. I always get excited when I see the Stars and Bars at the top of one of your posts, knowing you've create yet another story. :D

Ignore the poor grammar. It will be fixed tomorrow. The option was to either spell check tonight, and not post this, or post it tonight, and force you all to deal with it. I chose the latter.

Also, sorry if I 'forgot' anything. This has been an awful few weeks. I'd be happy to update the update, should I of.

OOC:

1) Awesome update.
2) Happiness went down?
3) Salvage?

From President Andrés Pérez of Gran Colombia
To the Nations of USMA, Maritimes, and New England,

When we saw the failure of the treaty attempts regarding the efforts to end the war between New England and the Maritimes and their allies, we endeavored to hold the territories of Haiti in trust for the Maritimes such that their treasures, instead of being used to support the suicidal government of New England instead be used to support rebuilding the Maritimes as well as providing support to the Haitian people themselves.

With the involvement of the USMA in the Carribean, we are willing, and very happy, to withdraw our forces and allow the USMA, who hold the Maritimes as protectorate, to occupy the Haiti territory on behalf of the Maritimes or alternatively to allow the Maritimes to govern the territory themselves.

Oh boy. Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.

Excellent update! This election is going to be difficult to call. Wow. If anyone has any interpretations about the update that may pertain to the election, please PM them to me.

Again, the update was excellent.

We are sorry that our military leadership seems to have had a miscommunication with the HQ in DC. We will turn over all carribean gains to you, as you are much closer, and will therefore be able to manage them more easily. Again, we apologize for the confusion.

To: new England (whoever the hell is in charge in that wreck of a country)
From: Who do you think? USMA...

Will you unconditionally surrender, or should i ask my diplomats to draw up a peace treaty for you to accept?

OOC: Is Omega still in charge of new England, or am i negotiating with the NPC generals right now? There are two different colors on the map so im not sure if they just split or what, especially as i dont control Boston even though it surrendered.

To: CSA
From: USMA

We ask that you dial down the tensions in the area, and allow us to peacefully take the sunk rogue sub from new England. We ask, how could the communists could have possibly acquired a submarine? It is obviously a rogue New English sub out for revenge against its humiliating defeat. We insist on the wreckage be allowed to be picked up by the USMA vessels in the area. We will happily hand over the area to CSA investigation once the wreckage has been cleared up and taken to norfolk by americans, and the site investigated by some of our experts.

And USMA elections are under way!

OOC: I will try to emulate some of what dread has done here. After all, the USMA is descended from the birthplace of modern american democracy! we cant let the CSA have all the fun.

IC: Colombia, should the Maritimes think that they can keep a proper amount of military in the area in order to maintain order and prevent communism was taking over the territory, we will gladly hand over out territory there to them, following your example. However, the USMA general staff feels you are in a better position to protect this land at the moment, and feels that if the Maritimes are to come into control of the land, then they must first make sure everything at home is stable and on its way to being rebuilt.

Excellent update as always, TLK. I do have a few questions that it'd be great to address with you outside of the thread.

Wot's all this then!?

...Where the heck have you been for the past two years, eh mate? Have you just realized there was a bitter war going on in New England?

Wow i didnt realize he was france. That leaves...a sizeable country wide open. Jeez.

TLK- I just noticed that my modernization program completion still wasnt mentioned. Problem? Should i provide more details? Or was it just overlooked?

@TLK, Lighthearter, Arya126
I would send relevant website group invites and diplomatic/country information regarding France that I am aware of, but I think it is important that the last few posts of this conversation be referenced as to why France may not be the best choice for a country, considering your apparent goals.

So...in this conversation we have two people who know each other from multiple other games on CFC and paradox exchange banter. An alliance is agreed to...but what goals are you implying that LH (or even I) have? I see a comment by me saying how france is still a monster compared with other open countries (LH was considering the Norse Union. Are you saying that France is NOT a very good choice in comparison?)...I also see a joking comment about how nobody would dare take such an alliance mentioned there on in a war.

Then i go ahead and make fun of the frenchies battle skills...(its a pasttime of mine. he French dont seem to be able to grasp the idea throughout history that letting an enemy take paris is a BAD thing)...and he warns me not to do it again. I say until he loses a battle.

So I fail to see what your getting at. Its a conversation that is half serious, half joking, and half everything else you can think of. Oh, throw a little sarcasm in there.

Please enlighten us as to our "apparent goals" as you put it. I see an alliance...and thats it. Then once your done that, explain why france is not a good country for these made up 'gaols" that you seem to think we were implying in that conversation, and we will finally be getting somewhere.

Considering that France is in a coalition-alliance with the Dutch Empire, Great Britain, Germany and Iberia, and those nations have in the past looked unfavorably on the United States of the Mid-Atlantic, France funding a USMA naval program and signing an alliance with the USMA seems somewhat out of character for France.

By comparison, Sweden is not quite as committed, and could easily swing in several directions. It is also not as "important" as France, in that it is not currently central to the situation in Africa, and might be a better choice for someone who has just started to NES, if only by the virtue that it is less committed to any direction, and less involved.

Basically see the above. France is in a coalition with countries that have expressed disapproval of the USMA's actions, therefore France acting for the USMA is out of character with the established character of France in the NES.
