SGOTM 03 - Geezers

we should attempt to convince Cyrus to go Free Religion before we switch then, if we are going to...that way we can still court him to our side...same with Hatty.

Alternately, we could give up an election to try to get Free Religion passed worldwide...I doubt that religious blocs are hurting Monty at all.

I think we're going to have to face it: Monty is drawing ahead of Toku in pop, whatever we do he's going to be our opponent. That result also makes me think we should convert to Christianity to see if we can get Vicky/Julius on board (and to reduce risk of Julius suddenly backstabbing us, as he's now cautious, still has too much on his hands, and still has that huge invasion force in Cumae). If we can get Julius and Vicky on-side and take out Mao, Huayna and Toku, we'll be in the right ballpark.

From what I can see we would have to change from Free Religion to another religion civic (2 turns anarchy ) before we can convert (1 turn of anarchy?). :( That's apart from the hit we would get from other civs for 'heathen religion'. As a result I would prefer to try other methods before we go down that route.

Adding up the numbers we would still be 71 votes short even if Cyrus, Hatty, Julius and Vicki voted for us and we had Mao's 19 votes following his demise. :(

Looks like we need to take Mao down and then start on Toku. Huayna looks to be too advanced (aka too expensive in unit terms) to attack. Louis is not quite as advanced but doesn't gain us as much in terms of votes anyway.

Of course even if we take Toku down we still have to get the other civs to vote for us as well.

EDIT: We probably should gift Biology to Julius to help improve his attitude to us.

Too late, we actually are at war with Huayna, at Washington's request (Monty is joining in too). It's actually going rather well at the moment, I'm just hoping we can capture Coryhuayrachina before Monty does ;)

On balance, I suspect that switching to Christianity should be a backup thing in 10-20 turns time, once we have enough votes from conquering that getting Vicky/Julius on board will get us over the winning margin (and assuming we haven't got Hatty friendlier and a possible vote by then). I agree we don't really want to lose 3 turns to anarchy right now. (I am still worried about Julius's stack though).

Anyway, 4 more turns to play then I can hand over.

I was afraid of this but was expecting most of it. Vickey not voting is unexpected. At least I am glad that we can take Toku out of the picture. Then use our workers to farm everything.

Well Washington may vote for us next, that is good. Too bad JC won't attack Vickey to expend his stacks. That would be nice, we can help out the victor.

I am assuming we are going Cossack build spree with cats. Can't wait to see them in action. I actually liked C3 Cossacks. Do the C4 let them blitz?

We got 361 votes, 708 required out of 1142

Summary:

  • The whole world (almost) is at war. And we're in all of them! Toku against us and Gandhi. Huayna against us, Hatty, Monty and Washington. Mao against us. Louis against us.
  • Captured Corihuayrachina and ollantaytambo from Huayna, but we can't do much more until we get reinforcements. A galleon is on its way from Shanghai. And Mao will be no more soon which'll free up a lot of troops.
  • Captured Tianjin and Chengdu from Mao. Xian will fall soon. Just bombarding its defenses while troops heal in Tianjin.
  • Julius still has his large stack in Cumae, and Toku has a massive one in Edo. I'm sending Frigates to try and halt any potential invasion at sea.
  • Diplo votes going badly. We need a lot more population. Or some better allies. Or both.
  • The wars are going well mostly because I'm using our gold surplus on 0% science to keep buying units. Cossacks are getting a bit dated since we're often facing riflemen now, so I'm starting to focus more on cannon and grenadiers.
  • For capturing 4 cities, all we've lost is 2 cannon and a frigate. Even so, war weariness from all the wars is starting to bite :(

Notes for next turnset:

  • Our great artist is in a galleon by Ollantaytambo. I'm holding him for now until a good great-work opportunity arises (I think Alexandria will be the most effective city to do that in, but Cuzco may work too).
  • Ollantaytambo. Monty's troops (2 cavalry, 3 cats) are heading for Cuzco. Not enough to take the city, but Huamanga has tons of troops in it that could retake Cuzco if our troops follow Monty. I'm therefore thinking of sending our troops to Huamanga, relying on Monty to cover our backs as we do. (Huamanga: 4 galleons, 1 cavalry, 2 riflemen, 2 grenadiers, 2 catapults)
  • Galleon by Chengdu is travelling round peninsula to position itself ready to quickly ferry troops across to Macao when they are ready.
  • Settler in queue in Hittite: I bought it thinking it might give us two cities to gift to Toku, but now it looks like there's no point gifting anything to him, so he's staying in the queue.

What Happened

Preturn. Prepare for war with Mao. Buy Frigate in Lodestone, move galleon/cossack from St. P, upgrade pike->Grenadier in Lodestone. Galleon to check on Alexandria, caravel to check on Napoleon (Orleans: galleon/2 longbows/settler/cavalry/grenadier/musketeer/mace). Trade biology to Mansa for steel/map/150gold

IBT: Alexandria captured by Incan empire (with grenadier/knight/war elephant/cat)

Turn 361: UN is built (that was unexpected :mischief:) Hurry Cossack in Athens (for Alexandria). Upgrade 2 maces->Grenadier in Berlin, cat->cannon in Huangzhou and in Hamburg. Change production to cannon in Hamburg/Berlin. Sell Monty Scientific Method for 350gold. DECLARE WAR ON CHINA. Frigate starts bombarding Tianjin.

IBT: UN VOTE: We get 594 votes for secretary general.

362: Moscow: Galleon->Lighthouse. Novgorod: Galleon->Frigate. By Tianjin, our frigate kills a Chinese galleon and loses (Our galleon finishes the Chinese one off). That's torn it, no way to continue bombarding Tianjin's defences. Rejig cities to put on max growth. Up culture slider. Bribe Monty democracy, steel, physics to declare on Huayna.

IBT: Gandhi offers rifling for biology. Reject for now but will look at in turn. Bugger: 1. Two Japanese frigates appear by Novgorod. No land units (obviously) but I cannot stop them pillaging food). And Huaynas culture has grown making it harder to move units around Berlin without declaring war.

363: I demand 130 gold from Huayna - and get it!

IBT: Amazing! Washington turns up to ask us to assist him in his war against Huayna. I ponder about it for about 0.000001 seconds then agree.

364: I get Gandhi to declare war on Toku and give us rifling in exchange for biology. Corihuayracina has 4 rifles and a settler and a galleon.

IBT: Mansa offers coal for stone. I get him to give us 1gpt and accept. Shame we don't have railroad. The Diplo Victory vote is offered.

365: Moscow: Lighthouse->Frigate. Lodestone:Frigate->Frigate. Ollantaytambo has two rifles. Getting Gandhi to declare war on Toku means Toku's frigates have now left us and gone into Gandhi's territory.

IBT: First diplo vote comes in. 327 votes.

366. Bombard Corihuayrachina's defences to zero and start attack.

IBT: Japanese Caravel attacks our galleon protecting our seafood by Loadstone and loses.

367: Corihuayrachina captured, without losing a single unit (this is entirely due to CR-grenadiers with cannon/frigates to bombard the defences. Our cossacks aren't much good against Huayna's riflemen). Cuzco has 4 riflemen. Alexandria also has 4 riflemen, indicating offensive units have left the city. Monty's invasion fleet for Huayna has disappeared. I can only guess he's taken it to Ollantaytambo? Tianjin falls too, this time with cossacks attacking, and also without losing a unit although that was quite lucky since even with defences the odds for some of the attacks were only around 75%,

IBT: Nothing significant.

368: Chengdu falls. Because I'm worried about Monty taking Ollantaytambo, I offload our troops there instead of by Cuzco, which I had been planning to attack next.

IBT: Nothing significant

369: Ollantaytambo falls (to us). We lost two cannons. Our frigate discovers what looks like Toku's invasion force in Edo: 5 frigates, 3 galleons, 4 knights, 2 cats, 1 grenadier, 1 samurai, 1 pike, 3 longbows, and a scroll bar...

IBT: 2nd vote comes in. 361 votes. Vicky makes peace with Louis

370. Nothing significant. Various troop movements.

Plan for next turnset

I'm not that happy about us actually invading Huayna rather than just being at war. But what's done is done. I'll see about taking Huamanga but I don't intend sending any further reinforcements beyond those already on the way.

I intend to ignore Louis and will make peace with him once I get a chance. He wants 150 gold at the moment so I'll wait.

I intend finishing off Mao and then those troops will be available for the Toku front. I'm thinking of bribing Vicki into the war with Toku with Electricity. I also propose gifting Biology to Julius to keep him sweet. If the chance arises then I'll bribe him into the war with Toku also (crosses fingers).

I won't play until tomorrow morning, about 12 hours, so that leaves plenty of time for comments. If need be I'll delay further but I would like to play by tomorrow evening at the latest.

well, if Monty had captured those cities, he'd have more pop on his side, rather than us having more pop on our side...plus it keeps open the possibility of Toku somehow passing Monty in pop.

Here's my thoughts. I think we should try to take down Huayna before Toku. He's closer, thus giving less costs for doing so, and Cossacks, Grenadiers, and Cannons will conquer his cities perfectly fine.

Additionally, he's got plenty of pop points we could take, while Monty and Hatty are able to distract him from attacking us back.

I still think Toku could pass Monty in pop, even though it is not likely...especially if we keep Monty from adding cities to his empire from Huayna's empire.

I also think we could add Hatty to our list of friends again if we gift her Sci Method and Biology and stay at war with Huayna with her longer.

Next, we should gift Bio to Julius, and then see if he's willing to declare war on Toku for one of our other techs we've got over him.

Vicky should be bribed into war with Toku for Electricity, she's willing to do so.

Also, I notice on the diplo screen that when I hover over permanent alliance, it says we have not been in a defensive pact OR a mutual war long enough...that would tend to make me think that we could possibly get a permanent alliance with anyone we are in a mutual war with IF we are in one long enough...I'm not sure how long is long enough though. I would consider Mansa the top candidate for that, since he's most friendly with us and since he's most technologically advanced. We need to consider the possibility that we may need to at least attempt the space race, and having Mansa doing our research for us would enable us to concentrate on our wars and troop buildup(although we should note that I know for a fact that if we are #1 in power, there's no way to get a perm. alliance)

Does anyone know someone that is fairly intimately familiar with the code? I'm gonna try to search for info on permanent alliances, but I've got no clue where to look. If they have some idea where it is, I can find it and figure out how long is long enough, how many perm alliances we can have, and how happy with us they need to be.

Finally, we should consider going ahead and sending the troops from Mao over to Louis XIV...I think he's close enough to Toku that we could gift HIS cities to Toku to get him ahead of Monty...I personally think that would be faster and more productive than simply building up to fight against Toku.

As I posted earlier it looks like we need ,at best, an additional 70 votes or so for diplo vote in addition to all our known allies voting for us. Toku has 91 votes currently. He has a large force which will either try and attack us and/or attack our allies. He's also not quite so advanced so should be somewhat easier to take down. Vicki and Julius are more likely to go to war against Toku than Huayna. For all those reasons I think he's a more attractive target than Huayna.

I did not intend making peace with Huayna, just not devoting any further resources to that front. Your ideas on gifting for Hatty & Julius sound good so I'll have a try at that. I was already intending to bring Vicki into the war against Toku.

It's an interesting thought. The problem with it that I see is that it effectively means running three forces. One in Huayna's lands, one to attacl Louis and the last to defend ourselves against Toku.

Moving the Mao forces to the mainland gives us a decent defence force should Toku invade and serves as the nucleus of the attack force against Toku. This is why I intended to ignore Louis.

Yeah, I completely understand the reasons and plans behind it, and usually I would do just that....but since we want the fastest finish, I figured if we could take 1 or 2 cities from Louis and gift them and Hittite to Toku to end the war with him, that should be enough for him to pass Monty for #2 in pop...which would net us all of Monty's votes in the next election as well.

That's why I figured we should try that, its because if we can do that and make Toku bigger, we'd get Monty's 100+ votes, which would definitely help us get a victory sooner.

Ok I understand where you're coming from now. However the next problem is that unlike Hittite where we can let Toku 'capture' it we can't do anything about the french cities unless Toku deigns to talk to us.

EDIT: Since I've only had comments from Thrallia I'll defer playing until this evening ~10 hours so that I can get more input.

true...and I just remembered that if we were to gift him cities, that would require the war to end, which would remove our mutual war bonus with Gandhi and Vicky.

I think not devoting more resources to the Huayna war could be a mistake. That war is currently going fairly well, and we have Monty alongside. The main problem with the Huayna situation at the moment is that, in order to stop Monty capturing Ollantaytambo I had to take that city instead of Cuzco. That means we have two cities on either side of Cuzco, and both of them totally swamped by culture - so that they'll both basically starve to a very small size (killing some of our votes) unless we can take other cities to give them some squares to work (Cuzco is the obvious one to simultaneously help both cities). Not only that but until we can take Cuzco (and perhaps one or two other cities) the cultural pressure forces us to tie up a lot of troops defending those two towns, since Huayna could approach either of them with very little warning.

Cuzco was (a turn or so ago) defended by just 4 riflemen, so shouldn't be too hard to take if we can get more forces there. And once we have that we'll have pretty much broken Huayna's back. The main issue is that cossacks aren't ideal against riflemen, so we could do with some more cannon/grenadiers there.

Also if we delay the Huayna war, there's a risk that Hatty will successfully counter-attack, thus taking cities herself and denying us the chance to take them. (Or that Monty or Washington will come in and take a city, with similar effects)

Summary

Mao is no more. Huamanga is now russian. Made peace with Louis. We are currently at war with Huayna, Toku and Khan. Julius is feeling the strain of being at peace.

IBT:
Khan declares war on Mansa.
Turn 376 - 1718 AD
Monty demands we cancel deals with Vicki. I say no. Forgot to take that settler out of the queue in Hittite. Tell settler to sleep and start wealth in Hittite. CorI: Theatre -> Courthouse. Take Macau and Mao is no more. :) Notice that Washington is at war with Huayna.
Turn 377 - 1721 AD
Julius advises us not to trade with Hatty. Gift Communism to Julius in an attempt to make him like us more. Take Huamanga greatly helped by Washington having reduced his forces. :)

PC plays up but I manage to save and and reboot.

IBT:
Khan asks us to join him attacking Mansa. No thanks.
Turn 378 - 1723 AD
SP: Bank -> Grocer. Novgorod: Theatre -> Drydock. Chegdu: Theatre -> Courthouse. We are re-elected as SecGen.

SecGenVote-1724AD.jpg

We currently have 255 votes. Notice that Julius voted for Monty. :(
IBT:
Mansa asks for help against Khan. I agree to declare war.
Turn 379 - 1727 AD
Moscow: Grenadier -> Cossack. Berlin: Grenadier -> Barracks. Mkae peace with Louis. Suddenly remember the plan to gift tech to Hatty. Gift SciMeth & Chemistry to Hatty. Decide to restart research @ 20%.
Turn 380 - 1730 AD
Khan drops off some forces to attack Ninia newar Hittite. Hittite starts building a grenadier. Our troops are moving towards Cuzco. Huayna has been having such fun attacking Cori that I've left our troops there. We currently need 726 votes for a diplo victory.

Julius is down to +4 despite the gift of two techs. I've reinforced Lodestone to discourage him. I think the only thing stopping him is that we're the most powerful civ. However he's catching up fast.

I think not devoting more resources to the Huayna war could be a mistake.

I had already finished playing before I saw this. I did send the two galleons that were en route to Huayna. I don't think the war with Huayna was affected too much. Hatty doesn't seem to have done much against Huayna. I think she's mostly suffering from pillaging.

Toku is only 7 votes behind Monty?

Perhaps the turn before the next vote we should gift Hittite to him to end the war(if it is more than 7 pop), that should get us Monty's vote...unfortunately, we need to figure out how to get Cyrus, Hatty, and/or Julius to like us more.

Perhaps we should switch from Univ. Suff. to Representation? it will help with Julius, Vicky, and Cyrus...it might get Julius back to pleased with us again.

we should also watch for a chance to get a permanent alliance with either gandhi or mansa, now that we are in mutual wars with both of them :)

I think Hittite is due to grow to 8 shortly. Both your suggestions are worth a try although I have my doubts about whether Julius will come around. It's unfortunate that I had to say no to Monty wrt Vicki though.

Wow! I will download the save a little later to have a look. I think we are getting stretched a little and Julius keeps getting more worrisome. From what I remember of the last save toku's troops were still inferior but JC had quite a stack. If that stack was dissipated :mischief: JC is close and vulnerable. If Thraillia's idea to get Toku the vote doesn't work over the next several turns I have a radical thought. Take enough of Huanya to protect what we have and declare peace. Prevoke JC to attack and sink him at sea. Take out JC followed by Toku and Khan and we are victorious:D It is only half baked but don't dismiss it. Points to consider. Hattie is buffer to the west. JC is very close and we can bring a lot of force to bear quickly. From there and our northwest we should be able to quickly subdue Toku and Khan.

JC has bothered me with that force for awhile and I would like to get him to use it against someone soon- even if we get him to commit suicide on us:crazyeye:
