From what I gather Toteone just exploded in a...fireball...or something, whatever it was it need to be posted twice just so we definiatly 'get it'.

[rates about 1/2 a ]

Moving on; so when is the update? I go away for four days, and all that sustains me through the debouchery is the thought of coming back to a lovely update in DNES - like an early christmas...

[Okay made up the full  now]

A thousand apologises for once again creating a ridiculous delay.

Update 4 (finally :( )
4183 AF-4184 AF

(Cue dramatic, mournful music…)

!WAR!

Dawn, July 20th, 4183 AF…

They came by the hundreds, filling the skies with their menacing dark shapes… Bombers of the Imperial Byzantine Airforce. The city of Rome was ablaze. Sirens droned in the streets below, as they had done many times before in the frequent civil defence exercises. But this time the sirens were going on, and on… accompanied by massive explosions, screams, shouts, the roar and clatter of burning and collapsing buildings. Roman fighter cover was spread very thin… The Byzantines were bombing Roman military positions all along the border and beyond. A Roman anti-air artillery division was doing its best to put up some kind of defence over the city, knocking several bombers out of the sky, but most were making it to their targets.

It had all happened so fast… The rise of the Imperial Capitalist government in Byzantium had been followed by a period of propaganda warfare, causing growing tension and unrest in the region. But the Byzantine government had only been in power for barely two years - few expected war to come so soon, or for there to be war on such a scale…

DN4U8.jpeg

For not far away, the island of Venice was also being attacked. The Byzantine Fleet had sailed around Venice and launched a surprise carrier aircraft strike from the north west. Here, the main target was the Venetian fleet and port facilities. Huge columns of smoke were rising into the air around the city’s main ports. Byzantine fighters and fighter-bombers were swooping down between them, searching for more targets. A few ships of the Venetian navy already lay broken, blackened, twisted, smouldering and half submerged. But the main bulk of the fleet was not to be found here. The Venetian navy was concentrated at Crete in the northeast, surviving more or less intact. In the aftermath of the first Byzantine attacks, the Venetians scrambled to organise their air and navy for war.

A few weeks later, and another conflict was beginning on the other side of the ocean. Acadia had been invaded by US forces, on a mission to bring down the fascist government there. A massed bombing run over the capitol territory of Acadia had been followed by a strong push by US forces into Heidelberg.

Meanwhile, offshore from Acadia, Iroquois and Celtonian fleets were arriving, each with a mission to unload troops and supplies for their own agendas. Both felt that their cause was justified, and both felt that the other side were the aggressors. But more importantly, both sides had orders that needed to be carried out. And so the two fleets continued to move in. The world’s biggest fleet and the world’s second biggest fleet were about to collide.

As 4183 drew to a close, many great ships lay on the bottom of the seabed, many hundreds of tanks and aircraft were reduced to wreckage. Tens of thousands of sailors, airmen and soldiers lay dead. Yet little ground had actually changed hands. It was a sudden, concentrated clash of military forces, finally a chance to test modern weapons and tactics to their limits, and unleash the tension that had been building for years…

Non-Random Events:

’Igins Bellum’ The Road to Rome…

DN4UB.jpeg

Das Captiol ordered all three main Byzantine armies into Roman territory. Rivers of tanks and vehicles were soon flowing across the border. But on the first day of the invasion, there was an unpleasant surprise – much heavier fortifications than expected, constructed both along the border and far behind it. The Romans had gone to great lengths to keep the true extent of these modern defences hidden. The vast concentration of Byzantine forces made easy targets for the fortified artillery positions, and casualties mounted. Unexpected obstacles and ditches held up the advance of the Byzantine armour and mobile divisions.

DN4U3.jpeg

(A camouflaged Roman bunker)

But the Byzantine airforce, which outnumbered the Romans in the air by around 3 to 1, with more advanced aircraft, was pounding the Roman forces in turn. There was soon carnage all along the front lines. Byzantine armour and mobile artillery divisions crashed onwards through line after line of Roman bunkers and concealed defences. Behind them, they left a trail of destruction, corpses and burning vehicles from both sides.

In recent years, Byzantine generals had developed their own tactics similar to the Mayans - Ignis Bellum, ‘fire war’. A new tank design, known as the ‘Kataphraktoi’, had been designed and built in large numbers with these tactics in mind. But in the invasion of Latium, the Byzantines were now facing rough terrain and strong fortifications. Even the general shape of the land was a problem, being a narrow peninsular in places, offering few opportunities for fast manoeuvre. It also made it much easier for the Romans to fight out-numbered. For now there was little choice but a prolonged, head-on attack with all their forces.

e-100.jpeg

(Roman ‘Legionnaire’ heavy tank)

Blocking the way, the Romans had some advanced weaponry of their own. The Roman Assault Infantry units were considered by many to be the best trained and best equipped forces in the world, and the Roman ‘Legionaire’ heavy tanks were currently the most powerful tanks in use by any army. The Legionnaire tanks were large and very slow, but this was not such an issue in a defensive battle. Their heavy firepower and armour allowed them to inflict heavy losses on the Byzantine Kataphraktoi’s whenever the two tank forces clashed. The armour of the Kataphractoi was its weak point, as the emphasis of that design was mobility and firepower. However, the Legionnaire’s size and lack of mobility also made them more vulnerable to air attack, and many Legionnaires were taken out by Byzantine fighter-bombers that constantly prowled the skies overhead.

Meanwhile, the roman ‘Arcani’ special forces caused havoc behind the lines, destroying bridges, laying mines, and ambushing convoys. They slowed down the Byzantine advance, but could not halt it. The Arcani themselves took losses, but established a fearful reputation for themselves amongst the Byzantine troops.

As the front line got deeper into Latium, the terrain became more mountainous, and tank forces became less important. The invasion became a slow but steady infantry assault, backed up by heavy air and ground artillery. After a gruelling campaign, in which Byzantine infantry took heavy losses, the front line finally reached the suburbs of Rome itself. The orders from Das Captiol in Byzantium demanded that this city be annexed into the new empire. Politically, this would be a great victory for the ‘one Romanoi’ ideal, surely winning many more supporters for the Byzantine side. And strategically, the city also held the centre of the Roman defence line together. If it fell, Roman forces would be split between several smaller peninsulas, isolated in pockets to be picked off one by one.

DN4U1.jpeg

(Roman vehicles lie abandoned after a Byzantine attack, somewhere in the suburbs of Rome)

Led by the elite ‘Varangian Guard’ infantry, the Byzantines pushed onwards into the city. Roman infantry fought fanatically, turning every main street into a major battlefield. The Byzantine superiority in tanks, artillery and air support could offer less support here. After heavy losses on all sides, Byzantine troops began the battle for the city’s heart, the forum, senate and public buildings. There were dramatic and hellish scenes as the fighting reached these grand buildings, with fire, dead bodies and destruction all around. The resistance of dedicated roman units was so fierce, that in fact the fighting is still going on. At this point in time, the senate building and other government buildings are divided between Roman and Byzantine troops - each has become a mini-battlefield, with gains measured in rooms and corridors instead of miles.

Byzantium: 3 Armies, 59 land, 12 air units
Losses:
8 Standard Infantry
4 Armoured Cars
3 Kataphractoi tanks (UU)

Rome: 2 Armies, 45 land, 4 air units
Losses:
3 Standard infantry
3 Roman Assault Infantry (UU)
1 Arcani (UU)
1 Mobile Artillery
1 Armoured Troop Carrier
2 Standard Tank
1 Legionnaire Heavy Tank (UU)
1 Dive Bomber

The Romans remain defiant, but Rome, and the territory Latium are both in ruins. Byzantine production can soon replace the losses suffered so far, while Rome’s army and infrastructure is nearing breaking point. The future looks grim for Rome while Byzantium’s forces remain concentrated against it, but Roman soldiers are fighting on in the city and all along the front.

Sea Battle – Tartar and Roman fleet vs Byzantines

At the start of the invasion, a Byzantine task force was sent to launch a surprise attack on roman ships at port. Unfortunately the ports were well defended by mines and artillery. While several Roman ships were sunk or damaged in port, the Byzantines also took damage and were fought off, giving the Romans a chance to mobilise their small but modern fleet. The Romans were then joined by a fleet from Tartarus, en route to Venice. The Tartars had already been sailing to assist their ally, even before the war broke out.

Now united by a common enemy, the first priority for the combined fleet was to defeat Byzantine naval forces around Latium. For the Romans this would mean control of their own shores, and for the Tartars this would secure a sea route to bring aid to Venice.

The battle was fought without air cover on either side, as both the Roman and Byzantine air forces were fully engaged over the land battle. The combined Tartar/Roman fleet had 3 capitol ships and several cruisers, including manouverable ‘Tartarus’ class vessels, as well as numerous destroyers. The Byzantine force was now outnumbered, with only two capitol ships and several destroyers, but it still had a powerful modern ‘Chalcedon’ class battleship at its disposal.

DN4U11.jpeg

(A Byzantine Dreadnaught, sinking…)

The battle was a fierce and fast paced exchange of fire, taking place off the northern coast of Latium. The Byzantine force fought very well, but in the end was forced to retreat, losing an older dreadnaught and a destroyer. The Tartars and Romans gained a fragile control over the coasts of Latium, but took much heavier losses themselves - the Romans lost their only capitol ship and the bulk of their naval power. The Tartar fleet also lost a dreadnaught and took heavy damage, and was forced back to ports in Latium instead of pushing on to assist the Venetians.

Byzantium: 5 sea units (2 capitol ships)
Losses:
2 Improved Destroyer
1 Dreadnaught

Rome: 9 sea units (1 capitol ship)
Losses:
1 Gunboat
1 Early Destroyer
1 Early Cruiser
1 Dreadnaught

Tartarus: 11 sea units (2 capitol ships)
Losses:
1 Gunboat
1 Dreadnaught

Sea Battle – Venetian fleet vs Byzantines

A surprise carrier strike on Venetian ports caused some heavy damage, but the bulk of the Venetian fleet had been concentrated at Crete, far to the north east, and had escaped damage. The Venetian admirals now surprised the Byzantines by mobilising rapidly to defend the island of Venice from being blockaded.

DNESVS.jpeg

(Spotter plane catapult on a Venetian ship damaged by Byzantine fire)

There wasn’t one single battle, but a number of smaller skirmishes and carrier strikes over the course of several months. The Byzantines had carrier superiority and more advanced aircraft, as well as radar. But the Venetians also had a slight edge in naval technology and training, and managed to outmanoeuvre the Byzantines on several occasions, frustrating efforts to blockade the main island of Venice. The small Venetian air force was also able to help out from airbases on Venice and Crete, helping to counter the Byzantine carrier superiority a little. Both sides have worn each other down, but the Venetians are looking slightly worse off. One of their modern battleships has been sunk by Byzantine carrier attacks, while Venetian submarines managed to sink a Byzantine dreadnaught.

Byzantium: 19 sea units (4 capitol ships)
Total Losses:
2 Improved Destroyers
1 Improved Cruiser
1 Basic Sub
1 Dreadnaught

Venice: 19 sea units (5 capitol ships), 7 air units
Losses:
2 Early Destroyers
2 Improved Cruiser
1 Venetian BattleCruiser
1 Battleship
1 Biplane Fighter
1 Basic Fighter Bomber

A partial blockade of Venice has been achieved, with supplies between the Venetian islands severely disrupted. Venetian trade has ground to a halt, as few merchant ships would dare risk the journey to and from the island. But Byzantinum’s own trade has also been greatly reduced by the fighting, despite the signing of a free trade agreement with Germany this year.

USA invades Acadia

As Celtic and Iroquois forces were still preparing to intervene with their own agendas, the USA quickly launched its own rapid strike at Acadian forces. Time was of the essence, as it was known Iroquois forces were on the way to support the Acadians. The US government made a good argument for the war, citing Acadia as the source of recent fascist uprisings. If the fascist government their could be destroyed, then the other uprisings in Chicago and Stavanger would surely wither away. Most Americans were appalled by the disorder and violence in Chicago in recent months, anti-fascist sentiments were high and people were generally supportive of the war.

However the Acadian military was no push-over. As a former Celtic colony, they had some modern equipment, tanks, aircraft, and good training. Their army was also fairly large, for such a small nation. Although few Acadians fully supported the recent fascist coup, most were inspired to do their duty and to fight for their country in any case.

DN4U6.jpeg

Barely 12 hours after the US president had advised the senate of his decision to go to war, a large air attack was made on the Acadian capitol and military centres nearby, causing some significant damage and disruption. The biplanes of the Acadian air force could offer little protection. Several hours later, a small portion of the US fleet moved in to demand the surrender of the Acadian navy. This demand was refused, and there was a brief naval battle in which several Acadian ships were sunk. The rest managed to make in back to safe ports whey they then stayed.

DN4UUSBT.jpeg

(US tank, somewhere in Acadia…)

Meanwhile, despite the air attacks on Acadia’s capitol territory, the actual US ground attack centred on the territory of Hiedelberg in the north. This wrong-footed the Acadian generals, and US forces were soon outmanoeuvring them. The fighting was still tough, and met some determined and well-organised resistance from the Acadians. Many small towns and villages were reduced to rubble in the fighting, and destroyed tanks from both sides soon littered the countryside. Casualties mounted, but the US forces were getting the upper hand and gaining ground.

Iroquois and Celtonian fleets clash off Acadia

As the US forces began a land offensive, the Celtic and Iroquois fleets moved in with their own agendas.

The Celts had been gathering much of their naval strength in the area, designed as a show of force to ward of the Iroquois. It took time for the Celts to gather their ships from all over the world, but the Iroquois had also been delayed as they were forming a whole new army group for action in Acadia. As a result, both fleets and their troops began to arrive at roughly the same time. There was a stand off for several days, as more and more forces continued to arrive on each side. Both sides were expecting a continued face-off, and then one side or the other to withdraw… Both sides had conflicting objectives, with orders to send troops to Acadia for their own purposes. But a major naval battle had not been part of anyone’s plans yet.

DN4UIC.jpeg

(Celtic destroyer on patrol)

August 10th, 4183… It was late afternoon, and the sky was already darkening, with worsening weather and poor visibility. And then, suddenly, both sides found themselves under attack. Both sides claim the other fired first. Soon explosions and clouds of spray were erupting everywhere. Supporting carrier aircraft scrambled into the air, as Celtic super-dreadnaughts began exchanging fire with Iroquois battleships. Soon dozens of heavy guns were in action, and they would blaze away well into the night. Few ships would survive this battle unscathed…

DN4U10.jpeg

(Iroquois battleships open fire)

In the end, the Iroquois navy was forced to withdraw. But they had fought well against a superior enemy. Two Iroquois dreadnaughts had gone to the bottom, one sunk from air attack and one by a Celtic submarine. But the Celts had in turn lost one of their old super-dreadnaughts, CNS Spirit of Battle, with large loss of life. The aircraft carrier CNS Earth and Sky was also very badly damaged by Iroquois carrier aircraft, and it too sank some hours later. While the Iroquois lost more ships, the Celts took more widespread damage to their fleet, which will take some time to repair.

Iroquois: 28 sea units (9 capitol ships)
Losses:
3 Early destroyers
1 Improved destroyer
2 Early cruiser
1 Improved cruisers
1 Basic Sub
2 Dreadnaught

Celts: 38 sea units (11 capitol ships)
Losses:
2 Improved Destroyers
1 Early Cruiser
1 Improved Cruiser
1 Improved Subs
1 Celtonian Super-Dreadnaught (UU)
1 Aircraft-Carrier

All in all, over two thirds of each side’s naval forces took part in the battle. It should be noted that no declaration of war has yet been made, and commanders on both sides are hoping this will be seen as an isolated battle. Exactly how it started is still unknown. Meanwhile, tensions are running very high along the border between the Iroquois and the Celtic outpost at Calcadia, with artillery exchanges back and forth across the border. A full scale Celtic-Iroquois war, pitting the two greatest powers in the world against each other, is something many wish to avoid.

Celtic land forces arrive
Meanwhile, the US 1st army had arrived back from the fighting in Mexico, and was preparing to strike at the Acadian capitol, a pincer move to finish off the Acadian defence. It was at this point that the naval battle occurred between the Celts and Iroquois. It seems the Celts had been in agreement with the US to keep the costs free of Iroquois troops, although no naval battle had been planned.

The USA was probably not expecting two Celtic armies to be unloaded onto the Acadian beaches. Neither were the Acadian government… And the Celts were not just brining troops, they were also airdropping and shipping in a vast amount of weaponry and supplies for Pro-Celtic, anti-fascist militia forces. Many of these rebels were soon better equipped than the Acadian military.

DN4UAca.jpeg

With the unexpected Celtic invasion in the south, and a large uprising being encouraged by both the USA and the Celts, the Acadian government forces were soon in disarray and began to collapse. The US and rebel forced had done most of the hard fighting. This was lucky for the Celts, and they were a little disorganised after a long ocean crossing and the naval battle, not to mention the loss of one of their carriers and its air support. In the end, much of the Acadian military simply surrendered or deserted. Many of its ships, planes and vehicles have been captured by both the USA and the Celts.

DN4U7.jpeg

(Celtic forces come ashore)

Even before the end of the fighting, Highland Commado units, working with Celtic intelligence, tracked down members of the former democratic regime of Acadia. They were ‘encouraged’ to sign an agreement, fully annexing southern Acadia into Celtonia ‘for the greater good, and their own good’. The huge amount of supplies and weapons that Celtonia brought for the Pro-Celtic rebels in the area has bought them a great deal of influence. It seems Celtic control will not be seriously challenged by the local people.

USA: 1 army, 26 land, 12 air units
Losses:
3 standard infantry
1 armoured car
1 basic tanks

Celts: 2 armies, 44 land units + fleet support
Losses:
1 standard infantry
1 standard tank

Acadia: 1 army, 33 land, 2 air, 5 sea units
Loses:
6 Militia [3 rebelled]
5 Riflemen [2 rebelled]
5 Standard Infantry [1 rebelled]
8 Standard Infantry Conscripts [4 rebelled]
3 Standard Artillery [1 captured by USA]
1 Standard Cavalry
3 Armoured Car [2 lost, 1 captured by Celts]
2 Basic Tank
2 Biplane Fighters [1 captured by Celts]
1 Gunboat [rebelled]
2 Early Destroyers [1 captured by USA, 1 captured by Celts]
1 Early Cruiser [captured by Celts]
Acadian army destroyed
Fortifications destroyed in Acadia

The USA is left occupying the northern region of Heidelberg, where Pro-German rebels are concentrated. An overall majority of pro-American people still inhabit the whole of the former nation, but are scattered throughout. It is another region of tangled history, loyalties and politics, and remains to be seen what the USA and Celtonia will do with the captured land.

Fascism is being stamped out in the region… The disorder in Chicago and Stavanger that began last year is also being brought under control.

Germany completes defeat of Aztec Empire forces

Message from Aztec Empire minister of information to foreign observers, August 1st 4183AF:
“German forces are ********. They cannot read a map. They are lost in the jungle. They are committing suicide in their trenches. I tell you the truth, there are no German forces within 50 miles of our strongpoints. We will have victory very soon…”

Days later, German forces announced complete victory over the remnants of the Aztec Empire regime. The Aztecs needed a lot of luck to hold off the German onslaught, and they didn’t get any. The German 3rd army continued a thorough and well-planned advance, with heavy artillery and air support. The fanatical Aztec resistance took its toll on the German forces, but could not halt their advance. Unfortunately, many ancient Aztec temples and ruins have been ruined even further in the fighting, and priceless archaeological treasures have been lost forever. The Germans claim the Aztecs had made fortresses out of these places, leaving no choice but to destroy them.

DN4UAzt.jpeg

(Aztec temple lies in ruins, somewhere in Huacan/Saxony)

And so, the ‘Aztec Empire’ is ended. At its height, it covered 3 provinces and had expanded into French Besancon. The regime managed to survive almost 3 years of war against some of the most powerful of the other nations of that continent, and inspired some fanatical resistance amongst its soldiers. But ultimately it will be remembered for giving other powers an excuse to invade, and causing the destruction of much of the already limited infrastructure of Mexico. There are scattered rebel movements, but most lack the motivation and/or the weapons to be a serious threat to the occupying NOD armies.

Germany: 1 Army, 23 land, 12 air units
Losses:
1 storm infantry

Aztec Empire: 1 Army, 8 land units
Loses:
1 army
1 Riflemen
5 Tlecuahuitl Militia
1 Tlecuahuitl Militia Conscript
1 Improved Cannon
‘Mexican Defence Army’ destroyed
Monuments infrastructure destroyed in Huacan

Meanwhile, German generals have gone with a provisional plan to rename the territory of Huacan to ‘Saxony’. It is not known if the German government still intended to go ahead with this, as this would imply permanent occupation of the area. The fate of the former Mexican lands has been the cause of several recent diplomatic arguments.

DN4UMex.jpeg

Tenochtitlan Partitioned
France has given part of the territory of Tenochtitlan to the Mexican Republic. A new territory, ‘Chalco’, has been created from this, and the map of the region has been redrawn once again. Relations between France and the Mexican Republic have been considerably improved, despite the continued occupation of other former Mexican lands by French and NOD forces.

But Spain also maintains considerable influence over the Mexican Republic. The Mexican people have a high opinion of Spain for its role in the war against the Aztecs, from which it did not claim any land. Spain has also sent a large amount of material and supplies to help with rebuilding there. Spanish forces are still in Mexico, helping with its defence and security.

Meanwhile France has declared its intent to create another independent state in the south, consisting of the rest of Tenochtitlan and Huacan, where the fighting has just ended. But German generals have already renamed Huacan as ‘Saxony’, and the German government has made no announcements on whether or not it aggress with the French plan for southern Mexico.

Instability in Asia
Both the Incan Republic and the Hittite Republic continue to battle rebel forces and uprisings. Last year’s attempted coup in the Andes has been dealt with by loyal Incan forces, with only minor losses suffered by the Incan army. But small-scale unrest has started in Lisboa. Despite the government’s previous acts to increase freedoms for Portuguese people, it seems another round of pro-independence violence might be about to erupt.

Meanwhile, the Hittite government continues to struggle with pro-Tartar, anti-government rioters. The unrest has spread into the province of Aleppo.

French Government Orders Assault on Paris Underworld
Scattered bombing attacks have continued in Paris, with little serious damage. Pro-fascists, Aztec sympathisers, and general criminals are being rounded up. There have been shoot-outs with government forces every other day, usually ending in triumph for government forces. Many arrests have also been made.

Scandinavian ‘Landskarl’ Militia
Scandinavian citizens, including children, have been receiving training in the use and maintenance of firearms for over a year now. Scandinavia is going to great lengths to prevent a ‘negative gun-culture’ among the people. Scandinavian citizens, as members of the Allthing, are considered part of the state itself. It is seen a duty for them to be armed and empowered in defence of the nation.

Having so many guns amongst the civilian population would be dangerous if any breakdown of social order was to happen… But Scandinavia will be able to mobilise a large amount of well-trained militia forces in time of war as a result of this.

Pirate Menace Disappears?
The merchant raiders have been absent from the western ocean for two years now. The Hittites have claimed that the ASP had some involvement in the attacks. All attacks occurred within short distance of the ASP nations, and the raiders targeted none of the ASP nations. But no proof has emerged of where the raiders were based from.

German Chocolate and Beer gains popularity
With government support, the German beer and chocolate industry has been expanded into a mass-export business. These high quality luxuries are being recognised as some of the best in the world. Also, Germany joined the list of other nations holding air shows to demonstrate their military air power. The German airforce has been greatly modernised this year, with new heavy bombers and other advanced airfract.

French Medical Breakthroughs
A team of French army doctors, working in the difficult conditions of the Mexican jungle, have made several breakthroughs in the treatment of tropical diseases and wound infections. There has been interested from abroad, increasing the reputation of the French education and academic community. French science continues to gain respect, after the end of the Fouche regime.

Celtonia unveils advanced mass transit transport network
A massive, integrated rail and subway system has been completed in Celtonia, covering the length and breadth of the mainland nation. The fastest trains in the world have been specially developed for the new high-speed lines. Celtonia also boasts the fastest subway trains, running on electric power. A huge subway system has also been built under many of Celtonia’s major cities.

It has been a huge investment of labour and materials over several years, but will benefit trade, industry and standard of living over many years to come. Many are calling it a ‘new wonder of the world’. Transport across the large nation of Celtonia is easier than ever before. The people are proud of such an achievement, and support for the government has increased still further. The old Druidists are not happy about that.

Druids demand resignation of Celtic Government!
After being denied the chance to set up their own Druidist mini-state on the island of Coritan, some of the Druids band together to demand the resignation of the Celtonian government on the following grounds:
* Illegal Warfare (against Zulus and Norseland)
* Crimes against Nature (re-industrialisation)
* Crimes against the national spirit of the Celtic people (seeking wealth and power for its own sake)
* Crimes against the mental and spiritual integrity of humanity (exactly what this means is not clear)

However, the Druids have no support for this. Celtic people are happy with recent achievements and the rise in production and wealth, public opinion is now firmly in favour of Cimner Elouh and the new government.

World Trade Update
The Byzantine-Venetian war has severely disrupted trade across the western ocean. The major world trade routes passing through the area are now caught in a war zone. The naval war is still undecided, and merchant ships of both sides have been seized and/or sunk.

As a result, trade routes through the eastern ocean have gained importance, benefiting the ‘East Ocean Development Council’ [EODC].

Byzantium and Germany signed a free trade agreement this year, known as the Deutsch-Romanoi Free Trade Association [DRFTA]. But its effects were not so good, as fewer merchants were willing to risk the trip to and from Byzantium.

The Iroquois have also introduced large tariffs of 20-30% on all Celtic goods, in order to strengthen their own businesses. Meanwhile, the USA has passed new free-trade measures, similar to Byzantium.

American ‘Computer’ Technology

DN4Ucomp.jpeg

The idea of electronic calculation machines is nothing new. However, all attempts so far have ended in failure, or have been too expensive and complicated. But the latest rumours from the USA suggest a practical machine has been developed, which can be ‘programmed’ to perform different sums and calculations in different orders. There are sure to be many possibilities for such devices.

New Superpowers! Balance of Power Changing Worldwide…
World opinion has changed over recent years, now recognising both Celtonia and the Iroquois as new super-powers, in terms of production, science, political influence and military strength. In addition, several more nations are now counted among the ‘great powers’

Super-Powers:
Celtonia (leader)
Iroquois Nation

Great Powers:
Byzantium (leader)
USA
Mayan Nation
Germany
Scandinavia
Venice

Of the other powers, the following (in no particular order) could easily become great powers as the situation changes:
France (leader), Japan, Korea, China, Spain, Tartars, Rome, Hittites, Holland, Incan Republic

There is then a large gap between those above and the minor nations below:
Copan (leader), Stavanger, Mexican Republic, Egypt, Nemausus, Canada, Molde

Of the puppet states, Alaska is bar far the most influential, and could easily become a strong independent nation.
Alaska (leader), Gotland, Akwesane

The following nations have been wiped off the map in recent years:
Acadia (conquered by USA/Celts, 4183)
Mexico/Aztec Empire (conquered by France/USA/Germany/Spain/Nemausus, 4183)
Arequipa (conquered by Mayans, 4181)
Zulu (conquered by Celts/China, 4181)
Norseland (conquered by Celts, 4180)

Alliance Update:

SOI4.jpeg

NOD forces gain full control of southern Mexico with Germany’s victory. Acadia is split between Celts and the NOD. The GDI gains ground in Latium, thanks to Byzantium.

The EODC economic organisation is expanding. It now includes Scandinavia, Spain, China, Holland and Japan.

Alliance Mobilisation?
Byzantium’s attack of Venice looks set to rally all the nations of the ASP. Tartar forces have already been involved in combat, and Dutch forces look set to follow. However, the Tartar government has yet to officially declare war.

Technically, Celtonia is now honour-bound to honour its ASP membership and declare war on Byzantium. However, as Byzantium is Celtonia’s ally under the separate GDI alliance, Celtonia is in the position of having some justification for choosing either side, or for staying neutral.

Even without Celtic entry into the conflict, the entry of Tartar and Dutch forces could be grounds for activating the GDI alliance against the ASP, brining many other nations into the war…

Meanwhile, the shadow of a Celtic-Iroquois war looms over the horizon. Artillery exchanges have already begun back and forth along the border between the Iroquois nation and Celtonia’s colony at Calcadia…

Random Events:
Earthquake along Iroquois/Spanish border:
Several small towns and villages have been badly damaged on both sides of the border, and roads are cut off. The roads and rail links from the Diamond mines of the Cattaraugus region have also been cut off by landslides.

Choice for Spain and Iroquois:
* Send aid from the government – Costs 10PP. For the Iroquois, this will ensure the luxury supply from Cattaraugus continues. For the Spanish, this will only improve public morale a little and make the government look good.

* Send no special aid – For the Iroquois, the luxury supply from Cattaraugus will be irregular for the next few turns. For the Spanish, public morale and confidence in the government might be reduced a little.

Oil found in Spanish Balearic Islands:
Prospectors believe they have found a good source of oil in the island territory of Baleares, owned by Spain near Alaska. They believe there is a 70% chance that an oil source can be developed there.

Choice for Spain:
* Develop it now – costs 10PP, chance to gain oil source this turn

* Let local business people develop it – costs nothing, chance to get oil source, eventually, some point in near future

In the chaos of the recent war in Mexico, many priceless ancient artefacts from the original Aztec empire or even earlier have been finding their way onto the black markets, particularly in the western regions currently controlled by France.

Choice for France:
* Try to buy them – Costs 2PP. Putting these artefacts and exhibits in French museums will help improve the reputation of the French scientific community (chance for science rate increase).

* Crush the black market – Costs nothing, roughly 50% chance to obtain the artefacts anyway, and discourage illegal activities. But also a chance to still up some unrest in Tenochtitlan.

* Do nothing – no effects

Drought continues in central Germany:
The effects lessen this year, with some rainfall but not quite enough to undo the damage from last year. It is highly unusual for such a drought two years running. But food aid from the USA means there is no risk of food shortage.

Germany: -1 food for this turn.

NPC Diplomacy:
To World
From Canada

We once again propose a meeting of world leaders in Canada to discuss ideas for a peaceful future, to avoid the devastation of modern warfare on a greater scale. We must act now before it is too late!

To ASP and Byzantium
From Hittites

We must regretfully cancel the supply of oil to Venice from now on. We do not wish to take sides, nor endanger our merchant crews.

We once again declare our neutrality, and hope the current conflict can be brought to a peaceful end.

To Byzantine Empire
From Holland

It is with great regret that we must announce a declaration of war against the Byzantine Empire. We choose to honour our defensive alliance with the nations of the ASP. We cannot overlook the attempts of the Byzantines to force others under their rule by military force.

We hope Byzantines will see the folly of their ways and enter peace negotiations. Their expansionism will be stopped, either by civilised discussions or by prolonged warfare. But it will be stopped.

Dutch forces will soon be entering the conflict. We wish to offer any assistance we can to the nations under attack by Byzantium. As a last resort, we will offer refuge to any government or military forces from nations overrun by Byzantine tyranny.

To Spain
From Nemausus

In the hope of long term good relations with Spain, and in recognition of Spanish and Mexican claims to our territory, we offer to give up some of our inland territory to both Spain and Mexico, to create a land route between the two nations.

nemaususdeal1.jpeg

(Spain would gain +1 Industry from this land)

We also ask that the treaty allowing Spanish forces to move through our nation be cancelled after this, as there would be no longer be any need for this.

Notes:

New UU info made public, due to its involvement in combat: (will add this to first page also)
Spoiler Byzantium’s Kataphractoi tank :

Kataphractoi Tank
The Byzantines have recently developed this tank which improves on firepower and speed at the expense of armour.

Replaces: standard tank
Cost: 25 (same)
Level: Tank 2+
Special: Increased firepower and mobility, less armour protection.

Its now 4184 AF

Let me if anyone wants new flags / map colours etc, or wants any specific zoomed- in maps.

Cant think of anything else right now!

Ethnic groups/influences: Zulu 85%, Scandinavian 5%, Celtic 5%, Spanish 5%

Military - Land: (3/0/0), Sea: none, Air: none

OOC: Somehow I only gained 2 Air Tech points after focusing my research on it. :crazyeye: Oh well. Wait for the update to finish and figure it out then I guess.

@ Daft: I realise that my economy took a hit due to this war, yet I dont understand why my PP dropped. PP is industrial production, and the amount produced per year. As my industry was not hit AT ALL by enemy forces, I do not see why my PP dropped. Also, should not the minerals from Mayans boosted my PP?

Great update, nonetheless.

Thanks, :)

My idea for PP was a kind of combined ability to make stuff and to buy parts/resources etc for whatever couldnt be built.

Loss of economy, trade, resources coming in, loss of tax from trade from which to pay for weapons/construction contracts etc... i dont know it makes sense to me kinda :)

As for the air tech, my idea is everyone at cutting edge levels has been slowing down a lot in all areas, cos its much easier when there are many foreign examples to work with.

Its also been random exactly how much progress you make per turn, some years good some bad.

TO: The World
FROM: Autokrator Rhexenphalar I Paeleologus of Byzantium

No more shall the Romanoi be divided. No more shall the Empire of Byzantium be split into peices. Our war is justified, and our cause is righteous. Byzantium will prevail in our struggle, with our without the support of the international community.

For FAR too long have these Venetians harrased our commerce and harangued our people.

For FAR too long have the Romanoi people been split apart due to the effects of antiquated treaties created to destroy Byzantium.

No more shall we face their attempts at the destruction and dissolution of the Romanoi culture and the Romanoi peoples must be united oncemore. Rome and Venice can no longer exist if there is to be peace on this earth.

We, as the protectors of our great people, will never surrender. We will fight until either we have secured the cities of Rome and Venice or until they are wiped off the face of the earth. There will be no victory for those who oppose us, and there will be no mercy for those who seek to destroy us.

We applaud your stance on this matter. Byzantium will no longer allow the nations of the ASP their attempts at destablizing the region.

TO: The GDI
FROM: Autokrator Rhexenphalar I Paeleologus of Byzantium

The time for reckoning has come! The ASP can no longer threaten us on this continent, and the GDI must secure its proper place as arbiter of the Asian peoples.

Therefore I urge the nations of the GDI to aid Byzantium in these dark times.

TO: Celtonia
FROM: Autokrator Rhexenphalar I Paeleologus of Byzantium

We ask that you stay neutral in this conflict. Venice and Rome, historically, are parts of the Byzantine empire, and claims on these two territories are legitimate. Also, Venice and Rome have far too long threatened the balance of power on the continent, and the ASP has been actively persuing means to destablize the Hittite nation aswell as fueling Pirates in the south.

Byzantium, as a long standing ally of the Celtic nation and its people, wishes that you stay neutral, and pledges moral support for you in the coming struggle against the belligerent Iroquois.

just one question, how come im not a great power and venice is? in every area of my stats i am better so umm to put it bluntly WTH?

From Japanese Kingdom
To GDI
we would rather urge a peacefull solution to this problem but if it is war, then we will back any nation in the GDI with the full force of our military however small it may be, including Celtonia

Scandinavian Announcement

Scandinavia deplores the breakdown in diplomacy that has lead to this terrible 'Maritime War'* and hope the Byzantines realise the terrible calamity that has been wrought. However Scandinavia must currently remain neutral in the conflict, a state that will be maintained as long as;
a. Our Merchent shipping is not attacked or interfered with (we intend to maintian normal trade relations with the hitties) and
b. The home soil of our good friend and trade partner the Dutch nation is not violated.
Humanitarian aid will be offered to any party who requests it.

As regards the antifacist wars in the north of America, we are glad that freedom has prevailed for most part. We also discourage any interfernece in Stavangers sovereignty, or our shipping and trade links with Stavanger. Scandinavian merchent vessals in the north western ocean will be acompanied by military escorts from now on.

Final note: With the prospective joining of Nemausus, the Scandinavian-Spanish Accord, will now be renamed the 'Skane Accord' (SkA) after the location of the formal signing of the treaty.

We applaud Frances actions in Mexico - truly they are moving beyond the mistakes of the past.

*I think 'Maritime War' is a good name for it :). Provided it does not become WW(4 is it daft?)
