G-Major 36

17 days to go for this gauntlet. there's still plenty of time...

i'm still at first spot, though i'm still playing this gauntlet, in case someone beats me.

Further observations:
The war with Izzy can only be delayed using the "renew" trade method. I tried all possible combinations res/gpt gpt/res res/res -/res -/gpt to achieve the 10 turn "cannot be canceled" period. The only result is that the DoW was delayed by 5 turns. I can try to play further to see if the same habbit occurs when Kublai is preparing for war (different reli, close borders and no.1 in power). It seems he can be calmed with trades. Hmm, really strange, I always interpreted those "peace treaty canceled" message as the point where I had to renew the trades immediately and interestingly it works (with Kublai, not with Izzy). Any ideas or even better facts?

Thank you for sharing.

What is the "renew" method? Could please tell in a step by step example (like: press F4, then click on the leaders head...)

What is the "renew" method? Could please tell in a step by step example (like: press F4, then click on the leaders head...)

"renew trade" actions:
o F4 - "Active Tab"
o "click to cancel" to cancel an active trade after the 10 turns protection period
o RMB on the leader head
o conclude the same trade as the one currently canceled

With my tests with Izzy I had Dye for Sugar. I canceled it and concluded the same trade again.

With Kublai I had 2 resources to constantly renew. He needed rice and gems and each 5 turns I renewed either rice<->gpt or gems<->gpt. When he was not willing to give any money (he had no resources I needed) I grant him the appropriate resource for free (for 10 turns of course). Using this method he never DoWed me.

After our discussion I reloaded an intermediate save and never renewed the trades. Just pressing "return" leads to a war after he ends his current war with another civ.

So what I have verified is the case with Izzy:
o not renewing: immediate war
o renewing: war delay of 5 turns

What I could tell with Kublai:
o renewing 2 trades: no war
o never renew anything: war (sooner or later)

Submited a 1790AD win but I had to reboot my machine whilst the 1704AD save was loading due to me fiddling with the back of my PC. I hope it is accepted since it took me 35 hours ;)

I just submitted a 1822 win. That was one of the longest games I've played in a long time!!

Played Pericles and actually got on Issy's good side. By the end we had a PA. I thought it would help to stave off random attacks since Darius and MM had a PA for a good chunk of the game and everyone else (except me and Issy) were vassals to someone.

There were more wars in this game than I've seen in a while not that it surprises me with all the warmongers in this one. I declared a couple wars along the way in the interest of dogpiling on Monty but was able to avoid fighting until the 3rd to the last turn when MM/Darius and all their minions (vassals) decided I should die. Fortunately they attacked from the far side of my three culture cities and I had time to pop all the GAs I had saved up. And the best part was all that their war got them were two of MMs cities that had culture turned to me in the first place.

Whether it's accepted or not, I won't be wasting any more days on this one.

On to #37, hope it's a good one!

Well 24hrs gone and my game still isn't approved or checked, so I'm not hopeful. I have an autosave from every turn though if that helps...

Well, that's all she wrote for us. Just threw in the towel.

Got tired of Montezuma's antics, after he declared war on me for the 5th time in the game. Not sure if this is what triggered my doom, but I figured it was time to turn the tables on him. Maybe even wipe his bothersome butt off the map.

I had held off on any thought of this, as I had a little area on a peninsula type ground, with only Mansa(my best bud), and Monty as bordering civs. Going out further might put me at risk, as Isabella and Napoleon were not my friends.

So, I mobilize some forces and take his closest city. He only had 4 or 5, at the time. Pillaged all over the place. A few turns go by, and the city is mine. Not but a turn or two later, and suddenly Isabella is declaring war on me. Two horse archers. Not too big a deal. I then spot a mass of Napoleon troops coming from another direction. About 10 maybe. I could handle that. Uhoh, though. Next turn, a stack of 18! of Isabella's troops appear. That, I cannot handle. Not much defensive luck in that first city at all. Two cities down, including one of my 3 culture cities, and I called it quits.

Guess that's it for me in this one. Going to move on to bigger and better things.

Woohoo my game was approved after all, thanks staff. 5th place at the mo', not great, but at least it's an EQM legal major, same goes for marathon speed.

EDIT: It was a good game but it was just a press enterfest after the early excitement and wars. Teched to military tradition thanks to representation fuelled artists. Most advanced unit I saw was Mansa's infantry. Everyone except me dogpiled Cyrus and Monty in the end, Cyrus didn't have open borders with be so he couln't attack them but they could attack him ;)

love it because of marathon speed (yes, seriously. I am actually adapted to this speed. If I go to quick, it will be horror). hate it because the game depends a lot on diplomacy, if I really have a choice, I would just have eradicated/vassalized all my neighbors but no, finishing early is important.

Finally beat my old record... but only by a few turns. To my surprise, I was able to found Christianity, Confucianism, Taoism and Divine Right (in that exact order). Had a cold war with Hatty but she decided war will be futile the moment she saw war elephants popping out on the city she is targeting. Made mansa a vassal because he asked for it and I am in dire need of a war ally. Two of my neighbors hate me because I am running on buddhism and not judaism, their religion. The whole buddhist block are declaring war on them as soon as the Peace Treaty has expired and I don't want to be into that.

Culture isn't normally my thing, but why not? I think I can whore out some religions and still win sistine. Grabbing 9x cities in REX eh? There's three leaders I want for this, not sure which yet: Sal, Pacal, or Wang Kon. I like sal's traits better, but pacal and wang have pluses too. Hmmmm.

Marathon and not war too :(. Hot damn. I play ultra fast so I'll see what I can do with this...please give me your religion izzy :(.

I wouldn't play Wang his UB isn't going to be much help since everywhere will be busy building temples instead of universities.

Wang and Pacal both hold a great advantage though:

- They start with hunting/mining
- They are financial

If you roll an oasis or other strong commerce start, you can *easily* found hindu, and probably head towards judaism after a food tech or so.

Who cares about the UBs. Sure China's is great but not if it means you have 1-2 less religions to get abusive multipliers on.

If you get say 5-6 religions, liberalism, and some means to defend yourself, it'd go pretty quick with financial cottages. I'm not sure I can stomach marathon though...

Liz seems to be the people's choice for culture though (although she starts with fishing, which isn't too great on Panagaea).

I had 4 religions. Unless you can get a load of cash together to rush buy temples/missionaries it's hard to spread that many to your culture cities in time for them to build the cathedrals.
