SGOTM 03 - Murky Waters

is it really a power move if it takes this long to pull it off? :p
Sure, the longer we take, the tighter we wind that rubber band, and the more powerful the move!

I think that you guys at Geezers and Murky Waters are starting to sweat, wondering what nuance you missed! :D

dV

I think the people at Murky Waters forgot they are supposed to be playing the game...either that or Gandhi already conquered them ;) they keep talking, but none of them are playing!

(sigh)

@BP, do you get the feeling more and more people are trying to sneak some spoiler info out of us...?

It ain't gonna happen, guys. Every time you see us not playing, you'd be wise to just assume we'Re alReady Riding the Rays, and just focus on silver, bronze, or...spoon.

@dV: careful you don't stretch that rubber band beyond breaking point...

FLASH NEWS!!!!!!!!!!

Monty's long-lost, long-sought-after SOD has finally been located:
Who would like to lead the prayer for Smurkz?

What a nightmare...

They managed to kill of the entire SOD and armada without losing a single unit...pretty nice

Begining to feel like the tin man ... Looks like Memphis might just stumble into that diplo win ahead of us after all! At 1744 now, a victory vote in 1748 (two turns away), then Sec Gen in 1756, then victory vote in 1764. Two more to dodge, but they may have a tactic ...

I have played only a few turns since a new problem turned out. Mansa has declared on HC and has already taken Vilcamba. If he takes Berlin we could be in real trouble . I think the situation calls for some "deperate" measures and that's why I have stopped for discussion.

Mansa capturing Berlin would be very bad for our prospects. This mean that we must either declare on Mansa to prevent him from capturing Berlin or declare on HC and capture Berlin back. Best option seems to be to capture Berlin ourselves. This lead me to the somewhat risky idea of bribing as many as our friends as possible to go to war with HC :crazyeye:. If we are lucky it will make them vote for us in the next elections because they will start disliking HC due to the war. I checked and saw that Mao, Hatty, Kublai, Caesar and Alex can all be bribed to go to war with HC. If we get their votes and manage to keep Gandhi and Vicky's votes we could win. If we fail we have to capture Berlin before any of our friends (and Mansa!) but that should be doable. Worst case we could cash rush a galleon in a city near Berlin and move some military over there. As far as I can see we don't have much to loose anyway. And we might as well act before the next election comes up in 1748.
Seems to me that the war is a godsend for them, as it makes them think about getting everyone to declare on HC. That might well get them the votes they need for the win. Even without the war, getting everyone to declare on HC is probably the right move (they should have done it sooner).

Or, if they really would rather just turn off the war between Musa and HC, they could just bribe Musa into peace ... for Mass Media. Wonder if they will discover that, and if they will chose that instead of bribing all to war.

Love to hear LC's thoughts about this development! :)

D'oh! The vote in 1764 is a win in 1766, which ties us (are there tiebreakers?). So the difference between bronze and tin comes down to a single victory vote two turns away ... in three turns the suspense will be over!

Perhaps a tie for third between Memphis Blues and GK is a fitting end to the contest after all.

No tiebreakers. You'd both get bronze (assuming the other unfinishec teams don't surprise us.)

Yeah, I read that but I haven't looked at theri save. THink I'll just wait it out, too busy preparing for the WOTM07. BTW, well done on 4OTM15, dV. I have a possible solution for your skill dabate. Someone takes Lexad's second-to-last save and milks it. My guess is that a good dairy farmer could milk his save for a lot more than 150K, because it wouldn't take too long to max out a lot of cities, so the pop could be similar to Jove's but V much earlier.

Tried to move backwards in this thread and find something related to your game but gave up after a couple of pages :) . So I'll just take your word for it and congratulate you with your 2nd place :goodjob: .

Thanks. The win was posted back on page 75 #1499

The subsequent 15 pages of trash talk are much more interesting tho'.....

da_Vinci made a hint in our thread (Memphis Blues) that there might be some dirt on us buried somewhere in these 15 pages. He seems to be an honest, clean cut rennaissance kid who just happened to come under the bad influence of Big Pig so of course I had to read all the trash...

I happily noted that our 5 turn capture of Berlin was used for internal mockery. Regarding our knowledge of the voting mechanics - well we played it by ear because we lost our own simulation machine quite early in the game. After missing out on both the Oracle and the Pyramids by 1-2 turns in the same turn set he couldn't take any more beatings :hammer2: . He probably realized sooner than the rest of us that we would end this game in close competition with the likes of you and couldn't face this :D . Maybe he was the smarter one...

Before he left the team he had already described the so called BP gambit in post #37:

There should be some clever ways around this potential problem. We can gift the UN city to one of our enemies outside of our religious bloc so that we are guaranteed to have an opponent that our friends wont vote for. As long as we are the most populous civ, we will be the other civ up for vote. I think we're going to have to choose our friends before we know who is going to be the second civ by the time the UN is built. We shouldn't necessarily rule out joining a religious bloc in the early game just because the top civ is in that bloc.

No shame in getting this idea a couple of months later and at least he says it's clever ;) .

I fear you may be confusing the BP DiploV gambit (TM) and the various wild ideas thrown together in the MB thread. To qualify as the BP DiploV gambit, the UN giveaway has to be successfully engineered to orchestrate an early DiploV. Having read the MB thread, I see no evidence of this having been applied.... :p

Trust me, we would never dream of using your trade mark since it has little or no value. The question is really if you are infringing our patent on the UN give away. Our lawyer will be in touch....

And wasn't it really you who had the wild ideas and LowtherCastle who orchestrated the win

Actually ours was an even grander scheme involving several recaptures and give aways to make the Gypsy Kings sweat a little longer. Then by accident we won :D .

The definition of successful teamwork :)
Besides, every great leader has minions working behind the scenes to ensure his grand visions come to fruition :king:

:D

Due to my limited knowledge of the english language i resorted to the Wikipedia:

The word Minion is recorded in English since 1501, "a favourite; a darling; a low dependant; one who pleases rather than benefits"

I suppose it's the last two interpretations that best describe your relationship with LowtherCastle

Not so limited at all. Sadly, most posters here for whom English is not native command the language better than about half of Americans!

Minion definitely carries implications like the German "diener" ... is there a Danish equivalent of diener?

It APPEARS as IF that is true!

@ Frederiksberg: Do you and BP have a long-standing grudge that you are renewing here? Or does this just come so naturally to you? :D

There is ("tjener") and I think I got the picture (not a pretty one).

It's a brand new grudge :D . Trash talking comes natural to most danes whenever we meet a worthy opponent. It's the heritage from our viking ancestors to exchange some punches just for fun.
