The update is essentially done. Just waiting on orders from Kara and Amon now. Soon after, I can finish the military portions, add in any domestic, and do NPC diplomacy. All in all, the update will be up tomorrow.

No problem. I wont be able to finish tonight regardless. And I'm working tomorrow, so tomorrow night is the final deadline. 7:00 PM.

USA

All seemed lost. The horrifying forces arrayed against the USA, had taken them by storm. The President (Or Grand Marshal, as it is called in the USA), resigned. A new one elected right away. Amon Savag, the new Grand Marshal of the USA, quickly set about a strategy that wouldn't win the war in a day, but make the opponents arrayed against the USA take the country much more seriously.

"I have been elected because our predecessor failed to take our neighbor's hatred of us in mind when setting about a peaceful course. Our way of life has been threatened to it's soul. The Eastern United States live in a system where the government will choose your worth. Here, we are free to decide our own worth and work to achieve the great things we desire. We cannot submit to this 'Syndicalist' nonsense. We will not all go contently to the rice patties to be equally worthless to the dictators who rule with an iron fist. They call us fascists, but who are they to lecture us about freedom!? We will fight on... We MUST fight on." said the new Grand Marshal in his inauguration speech.

Picture of the new Grand Marshal of the Unified States of America... A big black dude with a huge ass sword.

Dr. Boskovitch leaned over the railing to look down. It would be a short drop to the ground, but high enough to be fatal.

“Thinking about jumping?” a voice called out to him from behind. It was Col. Straikov.

“Jumping? No, I was just admiring the view.” He said and immediately knew how hollow his lie sounded. There was nothing to see here but frozen rocks.

“Quite alright, I’m sure everyone in this Post Plague time thought about the easy way out. Not really a tough choice, considering a relatively painless bullet to the head to getting eaten alive by a virulent disease, dieing in a fight over canned dog food or simply death by loneliness, wracked by survivors guilt for being the only one in your extended family to be resistant.”

“I miss them you know, they gave purpose to my work. Building a brighter, better future, just for them.” He said sighing heavily. Straikov gave him a sympathetic look.

“We have all lost someone in the plague and troubles that followed. But you can still do that. Build a brighter future I mean.” Straikov said with an uplifting tone.

“How? Is that why we were called here? Does the сове́т have some kind of plan?” asked Boskovitch, wanting to believe but not really hopeful. Their position was a horrible one.

“To say they have a plan is an understatement. Perhaps an idea, a vision would be more suited.” He replied, smiling all the way through.

“The sovietniks never seemed like men of vision to me.” Boskovitch was a skeptic given his scientific nature, even more so about men in power.

“There has been an internal reorganization. A shuffling of cards. The Jokers have been eliminated. Do you know the story of Icarus doctor?” Straikov kept smiling.

“Da, of course…the boy who flew close to the sun and his wings melted and swoosh smash into the sea.” Waving his arm around as if to make a gesture of a man falling from the skies.

“Well forget about it, we’re nowhere near the sun, we just barely crawled aboveground. But we will need your help to reclaim the surface. Acquire certain pre-plague objects to get the ball rolling again. Before we can learn to truly fly we must first learn to walk again.”

“Your wordplay makes little sense seeing as we are already at an airbase. What are you aiming at?”

“The briefing is about to commence, come inside into the tower and Sofia will explain all through the comm link. I think you will find a project worth living for. Plus there will be free vodka served before and afterward. Then if you dont feel it is worth it, I will push you over the railing myself. Deal?”

“Deal. Say no more. Let’s go inside.”

I mean tomorrow, Saturday, the 11th. Which is now today.

Update 1: 2151 AD

"A Union that can only be maintained by swords and bayonets, and in which strife and civil war are to take the place of brotherly love and kindness, has no charm for me." -Robert E. Lee, 19th-century American terrorist, and Southern nationalist.

Peaceful Matters in 2152

In Columbia, almost immediately at the start of the new year, a new Health-Care Bill was passed in the Columbian legislature, insuring several million Columbians. While many are happy, that is not to say all are. Whilst Julia Teslin, the Columbian Prime Minister, and prime advocate of the Health Care legislation was touring the nation, an anarchist attempted to assassinate the woman. Luckily for her, the jostling movement of the crowd allowed for the would-be assassin to miss her heart, and hit her in the stomach. Julia needless to say survived the attack, and the man Alexander Kodak was apprehended and promptly committed suicide.

After a stay in the hospital for several weeks, Teslin found herself back in her office in Vancouver, and gained "Emergency Powers" by an almost unanimous vote in the Columbian House of Representatives, in direct fear of the general discontent apparently growing throughout the populace. This results from recent Columbian excursions into the south (see Military Matters), and the Health Care Bill in general. Teslin's assumption of emergency powers hasn't helped much either. (-3 Columbian Stability)

The Columbian government also attempted to start a massive high-way construction effort. However, the funding, (or lack there of) wasn't sufficient. The concept however has gripped a large portion of the populace, and it's construction seems to deficiently be in Teslin's plans.

Fighting between the Columbian's, and the Soviet's have also ended, with a peace at-current borders.

The Byzantines have begun an industrial loans program, for the growth of the nations industry as a whole. The Imperial State News Network has certainly glorified this concept, showing the industrial capabilities of the nation, along with all the benefits the average worker is getting from it. Wether or not any of this is true, is debatable. But the Byzantine people sure think it is. (+1 Stability)

But that's not all the Imperial News Network has been showing. Persian workers revolts have been attempted, and failed. The Byzantine military crackdown strangled the movement in the cradle, and the INN was there to capture it all on tape. This seems to of improved some previous discontent among the Persian community, but that goes without saying. (+1 Stability)

The "Imperial Railway" has also been completed. Previously secluded portions of the empire have finally been connected to Constantinople, as income has begun flowing in from the East. And the transportation improvement allowed for the Byzantine military to travel across it's wide domain fairly quickly. (+1 EP, see Military Matters)
The full mobilization of the Unified States has occurred this year, with women taking the place of the men in factories, whilst the men are trained on how to fight. Children are busy in the fields, to make sure the crop yields are high, but the USCA has attempted to put a stop to all of that. (see Military Matters)

Nueva California held several elections this year, 1 for the House of Internal Affairs, 2 High Council Members, and arguably most importantly, a Supreme Justice (Vincente Fields). The new Justice's and council member have proven to be good statesmen thus far. (+1 Stability)

The Project has begun in "Проект". The Soviet Republic has begun a massive campaign aiming to rebuild Russia to it's former glory. Massive volunteer efforts have been undertaken, with groups of workers building new railroads, and factories. The economy itself has been shifted a bit too, in which the workers have begun to receive shares of their factories profits. The recent fighting in Siberia (see Military Events) coupled with this improvement has added new vigor to the Soviet's economy, something it was seriously lacking before. (+1 EP)

In York, the English government has built a massive plane factory, to aid with it's war effort against the United States of Europe. Despite the cessation of hostilities (see Below), this giant factory has increased the ability of the English government to produce planes, easing their ability to replace lost ones.

The factory however remains relatively unused, at least to it's full potential. The United States of Europe's ruler, Pope Alexander IX, President Pontificate, has deemed the fighting unnecessary and demanded it stop. Not only that, but his soldiers willingly left the South Coast of England for the English government, previously stated in Nottingham to retake, with no shots fired, and no "official" transition of power. Early one spring morning, all USE soldiers, and people who wished to leave with them (only a few hundred) were shipped off, back to Normandy. The English government has promptly begun reconfiguring the old capital of London so that it may once again be suitable for a seat of government. Until then, the national assembly continues to meet in Nottingham. (+1 English Stability)

Meeting in Warsaw, representatives from several prominent Baltic State met to discuss trade. What was discussed past this is unknown. What is known, is that the Baltic is becoming a major world trade hub.

In the Congo, several railroads and arms depots fell victim to a sabateurs plans, destroying causing some minor damages to the infrastructure of the nation, and major political damage between it, and it's neighbors, as it begins to look towards the USE and Tanzania as possible culprits. (-1 Congolese Stability)

The Spaceport in Dakar has finally been opened up. After two years of work, the world's first Space launch flight since before the Great Plague has been opened up, to grand ceremony . While the Spaceport hasn't seen any use as of yet, the mere concept of it is enough to persuade event the most stubborn of people that the old times have ended, and a new age has begun. Space flights are expected to begin within the next year or so, satellites first. But this is to be kept at the discretion of his Holiness, Pope Alexander IX.

Irish King Jack has also made an announcement that his island will be a fortress, surrounded by the Atlantic, "to keep his people safe". Construction efforts have begun in earnest this year, despite the assault on the Welsh part of the island. (see Military Matters)

In the Unified States of America, a complete information blackout occurred, with large portions of the public losing access to the Internet, TV, and telephone lines. This is good, considering the massive viral campaign the United Syndicalists dedicated itself to, showing the "atrocities" committed against Hispanics in the fascist nation. Video evidence of brutal torture, and concentration camp style torture has many of the USCA's people in a rampant furor against the Unified States. (+1 USCA Stability)

Cultural Matters in 2152

The British author, and Civil War Veteran, Mike E. Warfington has released his now best-selling novel "The Fall of an Empire" in Nottingham. Since the end of the fighting with the USE, sales have also picked up considerably across Europe, with large amounts of the book being sold in the Baltic Commonwealth, Prussia, and the Confederacy of Southern Europe.

The book itself is a medieval fantasy, about several nations fighting in a wide array of wars, but it seems to be more of a political statement then anything. The "big deal" about the book is that it is one of the first substantial works of art to be viewed/read from around the world, and commonly view as just that. "Art". This is surely a sign that the world's cultures are finally ready to expand once more.

Military Matters in 2152

Indonesia continues it's war of reclamation in Sumatra. Several thousand more soldiers were shipped to the islands, where they continued to face resistance from the Southeast Asian defenders. But they slowly moved inland, and connected the enclaves they had on the various sections of the coast, completely surrounding much of the remaining Southeast Asian forces. Despite their tenacity, an army cannot fight without food, and so, large portions of the defenders have been surrendering en masse to the Indonesians towards the latter part of the year. (-1 Indonesian Division, -2 Southeast Asian Divisions)

The keep up the advance though, the Indonesian navy swiftly moved into the Gulf of Thailand, supported by restationed aircraft near Kuching City. The Southeast Asian navy put up a valiant fight, but ultimately was bested by the Indonesians, that used their complete naval and air advantage to land several divisions of soldiers outside of Bangkok, directly threatening the Southeast Asian capital, as Indonesian squadrons secured the minor outlying islands under Southeast Asian control. These rapid advances, have led the Southeast Asian government to request an armistice with the Indonesians, so that a peace deal could be brokered. (-1 Southeast Asian Group, -2 Southeast Asian Divisions, -1 Indonesian Division)

In North America, the Great North American War continues into it's bloody second year, as Gran Colombia joins in on the side of the Unified States of America, after being persuaded to take Panama by the Caribbean Empire. The Gran Colombians moved into the region, facing token resistance at best, and captured the whole of the territory by mid-year.
(-1 Colombian Division)

Minor revolts had also broken out in the Unified States, in parts of Oregon and Idaho. The cause of these revolts are unknown, but the Columbian government under Teslin acted quickly, sending several divisions to seize the territory, promising to return control of it to the Unified States eventually. This action however, seems to be somewhat unsupported, leaving many people both in the Unified States, and Columbia to cry foul. (-2 Columbian Stability, -2 Columbian Divisions, +10 Unified States Militia, -7 Unified States Milita)

Meanwhile, both the USCA and Unifed State's airfares battled it out. The USA, receiving some substantial support from foreign governments managed to build it's airfare up enough for it to counter the USCA air superiority raids quite handily. This is not to say that the USA completely destroyed the Syndicalist air power. Both sides merely accepted the stalemate, and continued on with other operations. (-5 Unified States Squadrons, -4 Syndicalist Squadrons, -2 Mexican Squadrons)

The USCA, taking advantage of the shock of a Columbian attack began moving in towards Houston. Bombing run after bombing run destroyed the city, as the USCA forces slowly moved in. Always wary, a proto-type EMP bomb was used by the Syndicalist forces to ensure that all Unified States forces in the city were really taken out, with the bomb being used in what had been though to be the USA's chief barracks. Though the bomb itself was small, and relatively weak, it would have had a detrimental effect of America morale. But when the USCA army entered the destroyed city, they found nothing. No tanks, and few bodies. The Unified States simply abandoned their capital.
(+10 Unified States Militia, -10 Unified States Militia)

The USCA moved into the town, nonetheless. But a massive counter attack by the Americans from the west struck at the Communists. Taken aback, they turned to face the strengthened Unified States attack, when small numbers of Caribbean soldiers began attacking from the several miles to the south. Intense fighting then took over, with massive casualties taking place on both sides. Eventually, the Mexican military began to push up the coast, and met with the Syndicalists, but only after many lives had been lost.
(-3 Unified States Divisions, -1 Unified States Squadron, -1 Carib Division, -5 Syndicalist Divisions)

The Mexican military was quite busy in the south though. A general attack against the Caribs left much of Mexico itself defenseless, which a prowling Carib navy took great advantage of, landing forces at Vera Cruz, and besieging the city. Which fell in the midst of summer. Mexican soldiers were just too spread across the massive empire to effectively disengage it's enemies, and reengage the Caribs at Vera Cruz. And so eventually the capital was lost to the Caribbean Empire. Similar landings were attempted outside of New Orleans, but a prepared USCA militia, along with coastal defenses made the attackers evacuate the beaches.
(-5 Mexican Divisions, -4 Carib Divisions, +10 Syndicalist Milita, -7 Syndicalist Milita)

In the North, the Californios struck out against Oregon against, effectively destroying the remaining American militia. But by the time they got to the Columbia river, they found the land occupied by the Columbians to the north. They began assaulting into Idaho and Montana, and managed to take some ground. But the Unified States were tenacious in there defense to say the least. Supplies from unknown powers managed to be given to much of the local populations. Along with some modest training, they managed to put up some resistance towards the advancing Californios.
(-2 Californios Divisions, +15 Unified States Militias, -10 Unified States Militias)

Minefields laid by the Unified States, coupled with various other forms of trickery put a serious stall on all advances in this year, taking heavy tolls on Mexican forces attempted to cross into Arizona, and Californios forces attempting to enter Colorado. The United Syndicalist forces that attempted to cross into the Plains States faced similar measures, and moderate resistance from the local foreign support militias, so they began spraying Agent Orange chemicals on all the crops in the region, doing some major agricultural damage.
(-1 Mexican Division, -1 Californios Division, -5 Unified States Militias, -1 Unified States Division, -1 Unified States EP)

General fighting on all fronts was highlighted by the semi-effective use of an EMP bomb, causing some massive disarray in the American military command. As the USCA forces pushed East further, they managed to strike some defeats on the Unified States forces as a whole.
(-4 Unified States Divisions, -1 Unified States Squadron, -2 Syndicalist Divisions)

In the Caribbean, USCA naval forces attempted to harry Carib forces, and shipping to vary degrees of success. Eventually, the Caribs, aided by their Colombian allies managed to slowly gain control of the Eastern Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. Naval bombardments against Florida were attempted, but really did little damage. Several Carib ships were even damaged by USCA coastal defenses. An EMP bomb was even used to take out several Colombian and Carib ships.
(-2 Syndicalist Groups, -1 Colombian Group, -2 Carib Groups)

The Californians also attacked some of the Caribbean Empire's Pacific coast, but were fought off by the Colombian navy, and airforce.
(-1 Californios Group)

The Unified States put up a valiant effort this year, with large thanks going out to several members of the international community that sent weapons, money and supplies to the nation. Despite large advances in the East specifically, the Unified States has proven that every step it's enemies take would be paid for in blood. Meanwhile, the Syndicalists have not shown themselves to be hesitant about using chemical weapons to kill massive numbers of American civilians, and armed personal, ensuing the war has been taken to new, sickening heights.
(-2 Syndicalist Stability)

The Second Byzantine Empire experienced an invasion of Global Civil War nomads last year, many of whom set up camp around the Caspian Sea, in the hopes that they may find safe refuge from the war, and perhaps even aid from the Byzantine government. They've found neither. Several divisions were sent from Anatolia, to the region, via Imperial Railroad, and attempted to offer the settlers safe haven back into the chaotic lands from whence they came. The settlers promptly answered no, and a Byzantine bombing campaign began. Sortie after sortie was flown over the refuges, that attempted to arrange a defense against the Byzantines, but all with little hope. This "Caspian Massacre" has ended the issue of the immigration of refuges to the Empire, but is arguably one of the worst humanitarian disasters in recent history, aside from the Global Civil War itself.
(-1 Byzantine Stability)

And even in this most disgusting incident, the Global Civil War continues raging throughout much of the same lands it has been. The "tribes" continue to resist all Chinese, Russian, and Central Asian attempts at direct control while each seems set upon being truly independent after being self governing for 100 years. The Soviet invasion of the Russian Empire this year has also made it nearly impossible for the Russians to maintain the tribal infighting at all this year.

The Soviet's invaded their Russian neighbors this turn, despite previous offers of peace between the two governments. The attacks began with several anti-radiation missiles knocking out their communications, radars and jammers, allowing for an essential sneak attack against the limited Russian military bases near the border. Soviet sorties essentially crushed what little air resistance the Russians would have been able to throw at them.
(-2 Russian Squadrons, -1 Soviet Squadron)

A ground attack soon followed. The Soviet divisions trampled through the Siberian wilderness, facing little resistance, as much of the Imperial Russian army was spread throughout the giant landmass, attempting to contain the tribes. The disarray of the Imperial Russians gave the Soviet's a sweeping victory, without much of a fight back. Soviet bombers harried Imperial supply lines, and spread the concept of "The Project" through mass leaflet drops. The Project's Manifesto was posted online, and through Distributed Denial-of-Service attacks, managed to spread the manifesto through several major Imperial networks, to the point in which the Imperial government had to shut down the servers "until further notice."
(-5 Russian Divisions, -2 Russian Stability, -1 Soviet Divisions)

Special forces operations were also carried out against the Imperial Russians, with even an attempt at stirring up the indigenous populations against their Imperial overlords. But this was met with varying effect. The Soviet line simply pushed further and further westward, until winter began to stall them. Soviet workers quickly moved into the newly occupied land, to reap the rewards their assaults got them. Several pre-plague artifacts were found, and taken to Vladivostok for overview, whilst Soviet workers began reconstructing what few infrastructural gains they had taken.
(+1 Soviet Stability)

The Irish have also begun a war of reclamation, much like the Columbians and Indonesians before them. Building up their army, they struck at Welsh possessions on the Emerald Isle, and quickly over ran them of course after some intense fighting, especially in and around Dublin, turning the map of the British Isles into what it would have been just under 200 years ago, eerily enough. The Welsh, though beaten, continue to fight on, and consistently raid Dublin, via air.

THE "INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE" PERSON OF THE YEAR
Spoiler :

Teslin upon election

Prime Minister Julia Teslin
-written by John Artlack

The Americas seem to of been producing a slew of strong women these past few years. Julia Teslin, the 42 year old Prime Minister of the Federation of Columbia has become a force to be reckoned with these last few years. In the last year, she has managed to successfully prosecute a war against the Soviets, in honor of the reclamation of the Aleutian Islands, passed a Health Care Bill, attempted to construct a massive national highway, visited Japan on a goodwill tour of the Pacific Rim, and survived an assassination attempt, gaining emergency powers from the Columbian parliament. And this is all within her first year in office.

Her work ethic seems to be matched by no other politician in Columbian politics, and her general goodwill towards her people has led to fervent support from much of the lower classes, and wild hate from the upper. With the survival of the assassination attempt against her life, in this last year, she has gained "emergency powers" from the Columbian government. What this means exactly, we don't know. And there is a good chance she doesn't either. But she is sure to use them to the utmost efficiency. Julia Teslin, our hats go off to you. Just keep doing what your doing. And despite her (highly) questionable involvement in the North American War, one can only assume that what Teslin wants is usually best for her nation.

RUNNER UPS

2. Amon Savag
The USA isn't technically winning this war. But considering the forces arranged against it, it's not losing either. Thanks in large part to this man.

3. Mike E. Warfington
After taking a bullet for his nation, he sat down to write. And write he did. He has created the first best seller since the "New World" came to. Needless to say, a whole generation of writers has him to thank.

THE "INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE" EVENT OF THE YEAR

Spoiler :

london-2009.jpg

London celebrates in 2152

The Annexation of Lower England
-written by Kaitlyn McDowell

In a world with so many wars, disease, famine and general brutality, no one thought that cooler heads would ever rise in the crowd. Pope Alexander IX however has managed to end the occupation of southern England, a sore point in the relations between the United States of Europe and the Britannic States for almost 100 years. After bombing England last year, Alexander seemed to of gotten a vision from God, or a heart, as at the beginning of this year, His Holiness's army left the island to the English forces up North. Families, and old homes were returned to one another, and the English government began moving, if only slowly, back into London.

A normal ruler would have not only kept the land, but pushed their numerical advantage against the English, and just taken the whole of the island. Alexander's actions show that humanity isn't all bad. While no words have been heard yet from the English government, this action is most out of character for a Pope of the United States of Europe. One can only hope that rulers begin taking similar actions throughout the world.

Runners up

2. The Caspian Sea Massacre
Cooler heads rise sometimes. But not all of the time. What this magazine has called a "Humanitarian Crisis on a Grand Scale" just got that much worse. Thanks **holes.

3. The Use of Biological Weapons on the Unified States of America
Again, not humanity at its best. The details are still foggy, but it can't be good. Biochemical's destroyed civilization only 150 years ago. The fact that we are already using them so readily is not a good sign for the future.

4. The Writing of "Fall of an Empire"
We can't applaud this writing enough. Aside from the fact that it's the first major cultural achievement mankind has created in almost 150 years, it's damn good reading.

5. Baltic Sea Trade Hub
The abundant Siberian resources, and improved Polish shipping have turned the Baltic Sea into one of the most active trade zones in the world. Poland's great export? Vodka.

-Kozmos, please come up with another name for your nation. That's a nightmare to type.

Awesome update

To Unified States
From USCA

There is no purpose in continuing this war anymore. You are defeated. Spare your civilians further horrors and suffering and surrender. Your people will be treated mercifully. Though your leadership responsible for the concentration camps and war crimes, including most horrifically the use of child soldiers will face a war crimes tribunal.

To Caribbean, Gran Colombia
From USCA

Your "ally" is defeated. Once our attention is turned upon you so too shall you fall. End this folly and withdraw from Mexican territory, and Panama.
