As for stats, Xen and I have been discussing this.
* 3-3-2, and comes with say Construction (so not as good as Knights)
* 5-3-2, which I think is a bit too strong (Rome/Byzantine UU)
* or split the difference, 4-3-2 (and have it replace knights for the Romans & Byzantines)
In reality, they also carried bows, so you could also give them a 'defensive bombardment' of 2, with range zero.

Weighing in my dos centavos, I've always thought that a good compromise for a Byzantine Cataphract would be melee weapon for attack and bow on defense ...

Well, perhaps it's tucked away in it's bowcase somewhere on the saddle.
Actually, like the Persian Immortals (and many other ancient units), the front rank of the Byzantine Cataphractari had lances and horse armour, while the rear ranks had no horse armour and bows instead of lances.

@ LouLong...careful, just cause I have my precious cataphract dosent mean I wont still cut you head off... (with that big ol' cataphract kontos spear too!)
