RBC13H Middle Ages Angry Abassids Demigod.

"Angry" Abassids? Why angry? Well, wouldn't you be angry if you were walking around for 3 centuries with big targets on your backs? That's right! Everybody hates us. We own the only victory point location in the game, and it also happens to be our capital! This is a rather dubious honor. It does net us 25 VP a turn (as long as we have a unit in the city), but everybody and their mothers will be gunning for us. Also, as leader of VP (probably), then danger of an AI dogpile on us is ever-present. Although we don't really have to worry about a late game visit from the Germans, Franks, English, and Bugundians with a stack of 40+ Knights landing in Palestine (like we would if we were playing against a human opponent), it has been my experience that the AI does make some rather dogged attempts to march on Jerusalem at one time or another. The real danger is if they all march on us at once.

I admit it. I've never played these folks before. So I have no real authority in knowing what is going to happen. What I have seen in the two games I have played in this scenario (Germans and Franks), is the Abassids end up with at least in the top 2 most powerful empires by the midgame (usually Byzantium is first).

Positives:
1.Luxes!!! Wow! 4 different luxes in our immediate area! Most other civs have to scramble to even get 1 lux! I pays to be rich AND lucky!
2. Corner location. No enemies to our South and East.
3. We start with 2 Ansar Warriors. These could trigger our Golden Age! So no early wars if we want to make the best use of it! We don't particularly want to lose them either, since we won't be able to build any others for 60-80 turns? They would make great scouts and barb killers for the first third of the game.
4. Jerusalem generates 25 VP per turn (but, see below)

Negatives.
1. Byzantium. End of story. I don't care what the Byzantine team says, they have a kick-butt start with 11!!! cities and misc. units. They are to the NE of us.
2. The land --- not the best in terms of production or food, but certainly we could be far worse off. (Please note! The Seas around the Sanai pennisula act as fresh water!)
3. Rather far from our nearest Iron and Quarry locations. We need to settle and protect them early on from the Turks/Byzantines.
4. Fatmids (west) and Turks (north). Neither one of which are any specific danger to us, but we can't afford to be at war with more than one of them (plus the Byzantines) at once.
5. Jerusalem - Target number 1 for all 12 enemy civs. While the AI cannot successfully carry out a massive seaborne invasion, we will need to protect this city fairly heavily in the later stages of the game.

Roster: no particular order here, if you want a change, just say so! And if we get a volunteer for a fifth, do we want them? 10 turns per player turn. The usual 24/48 hours for "got it" and "played". I don't really care if I go first or not. Does someone else want to?

Any opinions upon the opening moves? Which tech to research and how much to devote to it?

Some points to consider.
1. We are Religions and Commercial: Cheap Temples. More money.
2. Unlike the AI, we can use our kings as fog-busters during the initial stages of the game without much danger.
3. We need a huge, rapid-expansion phase with at least 2 settler factories and a worker factory. Unfortunately, none of our starting cities are excellent settler factories. Should we pump out one or two settlers and then go for granaries? Or go for granaries first? Baghdad might be a good settler factory, but it is also the location of our only Marketplace. It will have a Grasslands Wheat and a floodplains tile once the culture expands (prebuilt Temple)
4. Alexandria and Antioch would do well to build a temple first. Their first border expansions would bring in 5 luxes (4 unique). Jerusalem could build a granary right away, as it at least has a plains wheat in its expanded radius.
5. There are lots of floodplains tiles between Baghdad and Jerusalem (upper Euphrates) that will be our Empire's "breadbasket" and good worker cities.

Commander Bugsy reporting as ordered.

The roster looks good to me.

What are our tech options in this game? Oh could you post the save. Looks like there are a couple of new items. Some black stuff (tar?) SE of Alexandria. Some regal looking dude in Babylon (king unit?)

This should be fun.

Edit: Double post

Hmm...time to hit those books...those civilopedia books that is :D .

@Rubberjello: As to the opening moves, I think you're right about temples at Alexandria and Antioch. Can't comment about anything else because I really don't know what techs there are and our situation (other than our location).

Welcome aboard, Deceased Horse! I don't think anybody else would have an objection to you joining the team. We would be glad to have you.

Tar is used for the Cunnagh upgrade (Galley?). Also the Quarry is needed to be able to build several of the new buildings. I didn't post a save because anybody could just start a game and poke about a bit. We have 3 King units. (Good thing this isn't Elvis's birthday, or else we would have three Elvi running around! :crazyeye: I don't think I could take that...)

Just checking in as I have been offline for a bit, roster looks good.

Edit:
If you guys are in a bit of a gambling mood... one settler out of each city, then temples... I have no idea how fast we will get into war, but if it takes about as long as it did in the FoR scenario it might be a worthwhile gamble?

I think we will want to settle towards our North First and to fill in our backlands a bit later. For one, it seems its full of forests (2 food, 2 shields) and it will limit Byz expansion some. Also, other than the North, none of our future lands are really contested (through settling that is, I'm sure that's not true militarily ;)).

Edit: It looks like Alexandria will be a shield powerhouse with 7 forests and 1 bg. However, it won't pick up those spices on the first expansion, so we should consider building at least 1 settler and worker to get those spices online more quickly (I imagine it will take some time before our lands are completely connected, unless there are roads outside of our territory).

Well. We might as well kick this sucker off. I'll play the first 10 turns and post it very soon. This will be the roster and order then (Kabuki checked in via PM, so he knows about us )

Who knows. Maybe if we finish first (amongst the 13 games), we'll get a special Charis award!*

*My last Charis award was a small wad of belly-button lint, so don't get your hopes up! ;)

...and we're off!

843 (1)
Tech set to 10%. Horseback Riding due in 40 turns. We start out with 100 gold and are making +14/turn. (Happiness at 20%). Answars and the 3 kings take off for exploring duties, while the 3 swords stay home for garrisoning. Baghdad -> Granary. Damascas -Vet Warrior (our only Barracks - upgradeable to Swords later). Antioch ->Temple. Alexandria -> Temple. Jerusalem -> Granary.

846 (2) Rush temple in Antioch. Exploring. See a Byzantine border close by.

849 (3) Antioch (Temple-Worker) Meet the Byzantines. They are at least polite. :eek: They start out with Wines, Silks, and Wool hooked up as luxes. How fair is that!? :p

852 (4) Theodora wants to kick us out. Fine. We were just leaving...for now.

855 (5) Damascus (Warrior->Worker)

858 (6) Antioch (Worker->Settler) (We need to grab a Quarry/River site north of Antoch right away. The Byzies will want it!)

861 (7) Nothing to see here - move along.

864 (8) Dyes are hooked up! Our first lux. Happiness slider goes to 10%.

867 (9) Horses hooked up. Damasus (Worker->Warrior) Alexandria (Temple-> Curragh (for contacts!)

870 (10) Meet the Turks to the North. Nothing much interesting there. Spot for first settler on map below. We are already over our unit support limit. Although we need them desperately, don't over-produce workers at first. Check to see if we can buy some (although they will be expensive!) We should probably think about bringing our kings home soon. Workers should hook up our wines next, then we should think about our coastal road through to Alexandria. (Alexandria is hooking up the Ivory).

The Saved Game at 870 AD

I got it.

BTW, before I start my turns, are you sure HBR is the best tech to research? It's the one tech we know everyone can research and we can't trade it for much else. I'm asking now because it's probably the latest time we can switch production without losing too much. If we do switch, we may want to start on the Viking tree so we can get blacksmith's later.

Well poop! Why didn't you speakup earlier? ;)
Tough call now because we would lose 10 turns of research. I would hate to lose that, because that gaurantees we won't get our first tech until turn 50!!! :eek:

My vote is continue the row were ploughing, then save money for stealing it from the Danes?

Alright. I didn't speak up earlier because I didn't really know anything about the tech set up yet, but after reading other SG threads, it seemed like the best way to go. If we're going to get HBR, then we should probably get Castle building as well and steal the first viking tech. This will lance us into the Next age and allow us to research toward Ansars and Aqueducts.

It's too late to play now, so I'll play and post sometime tomorrow night.

First, The Save

Turn 0 (870) - Reading over the Civilopedia. Looks like our 2 units of choice will be the Ansar Warrior and the assassin, which both come late with Jihad and Assassination, respectively.

Turn 1 (873) - Exploring

Turn 2 (876) - More exploring and starting to bring King near Byz back (other 2 will Continue exploring until we pick them up with Curraghs, as long as we have 1 King at home, we're okay).

Turn 3 (879) - Antioch:Settler->Warrior
Damascus:Warrior->Granary (it will probably be our major military producer, but needs to grow first).
Alexandria culture expands, bring its ivory online.
Byz have a worker for sale, but I decline since we'll be needing the money to steal Norse Tradition.

IBT - Byz kick us out of their lands and Theodora is annoyed now. Hmm...wait a second...Shouldn't that be a different name? And was Osman really the head of the Turks during this time period too? I'll have to check that and see if the leader names are messed up.

Turn 4 (882) - Alexandria:Curragh->Curragh One for contacts, another that can comb over the shores and get more map information.
King in North Africa will be called back soon as he is replaced with a Curragh.

Turn 5 (885) - Oh great...a 2 attack 2 defense Harappan (Barbarian, which is grey in this scenario) galley comes into view in striking distance of our galley and with more movement points (our curraghs has 0 attack 1 defense but have 3 movement and transport 1). I'll retreat it into Alexandria for now.
Settler in place to found city. King in N. Africa spots brown borders. Will make contact and then go back to Jerusalem.

Turn 6 (888) - Antioch:Warrior->Warrior I'll pop out a worker next to improve our lands, and then we can build more settlers.
The Harappan Galley didn't move. I'll wait one more turn before sending out the curragh.
Tyre Founded - Set on temple to be followed by Barracks. We can get it up to size 9, tops, but it'll make 21(22? if we get an extra shield in center at size 7) before corruption, so we'll want a courthouse(town hall in this scenario, which comes with CoL, a first tier tech in the next age) there.
Meet the Fatimids who have 57 Gold and no techs.

Turn 7 (891) - Call back 2 kings, the one in turkey is still exploring, trying to get around the Black Sea.
Argh! Damn Harappans! Send out the Curragh and hope it lives (another curragh will be produced next turn).

IBT - Yes!!! We win with no damage taken (and no promotions).

Turn 8 (894) - Alexandria:Curragh->Barrachs. Oops, the worker I thought I had roading the tile next to Alexandria (on the way to spices) was actually fortified. :smoke: Sorry about that, guys.
Second Curragh starts in opposite direction of first (it will head along the coast of S. Europe and the other will just go straight through the Pillars of Hercules and contact the viking civs).

Turn 9 - Our Ansar exits Byzantine lands and meets the Bulgars, who have 12 gp and no techs.

IBT - Another Barb Galley comes out of nowhere and attacks our newly produced curragh, but we win flawlessly.

Turn 10 - Antioch:Warrior->Worker
Growth for Antioch is in 2, prod. in 3, but growth should pick up an extra 2 shields. If you want, next turn, you can switch the tiles to produce 6 shields and still grow in one, but I think this loses some commerce (If I'm right about the growth picking up 2 more shields, don't bother).
Aha! I find the offending Barb Camp, which is locating right inbetween Jerusalem and Alexandria. Try to divert some troops there to get rid of it, if you can.
Contact Magyars, who have 0 gp and no techs.
Spot Byz settler pair 2 tiles south of Lake and a Magyar one North of the Crimea.

HB is in 22 turns. We have 219 gold and make 18 gpt. The Byzantines have already settled 2 cities, but they have been sort of fillers, so they are about to settle near us. If someone could post a screen shot for me, that would be great.

Actually, as to the Byz settler, they may be trying to poach our wines. You can send out the 2 warriors (without a riot) onto the wine tile across the river, and then send them on the plains and forest spot they might settle. Whatever you do, don't let them steal our only wines!

Good deal.

I've got it. I'll probably get close to the 48 hours.

IBT – 897 AD - Wake up the two warriors to occupy the plains and forest tiles so the Byzantines don’t settle there and steal our wines.

Boy we need some workers, and some military, and …we need a lot of stuff.

Try to MM the cities, but they are in great shape… Thanks Yom.

Diplo check – the rest of the world doesn’t have any techs to share.

IBT – The Byzantine settler pair which we thought was heading towards our wines, heads off to the northeast.
Jerusalem: Granary=> Settler (6)

1. 900 AD – Some exploring.

IBT – Antioch: Worker=> barracks

2. 903 AD – We meet the Kievan Rus. This guy must have been descended from Alexander the Great. A striking resemblance. He is polite, but has nothing to offer. He has seven cities and 52G in his treasury.

Our king unit on the North African coast has met a barbarian. This could get ugly.

MM Baghdad to get the granary next turn.

IBT – We are blessed by Allah. The barb runs from our King.
Baghdad: Granary=> Settler(6)

3. 906 AD – Meet Poland. They are polite. They have 6 cities, 4G and iron hooked up.

4. 909 AD – Meet the Germans. They are polite. Have 9 cities, iron and quarry hooked up, and have a whopping 16G in their treasury. That’s eight civs we have contact with. We need Celts, England, France, Denmark, Burgundy, Cordova, Sweden and Norway. All of those can be met by sea. I think I will start sending our exploring troops home.

IBT – Alexandria: Barracks=>Warrior (2)

5. 912 AD – Meet Burgundy. The honest one has 12 cities, 25G and tar hooked up.

6. 915 AD - :sleep:

IBT – Jerusalem: Settler=> Barracks
Alexandria: Warrior=> Settler

7. 918 AD – I am going to send the settler towards the Tigris and Euphrates river valley. Probably won’t get to settle during the remainder of my turns.

8. 921 AD - *Yawn*

IBT – Damascus: Granary=>Warrior
Baghdad: Settler=> Warrior
Tyre: Temple=> Barracks

9. 924 AD - *Goes back to sleep*

10. 927 AD – Meet the Cordovans. They are polite. They have seven cities, 20G in the bank, and have hooked up iron and quarry.

We see Scylla and Charybdis.

3/3 sword kills 2/2 barb warrior (-2hp)

After Action Report: Have two settler near Baghdad. One to the north and one to the south.

Two of our kings are safe at home. One is to the north along with a Ansar. The other Ansar is over in Greece.

I’m including a screenshot of the Baghdad area for settler placement.
